Don't Burn Your Own House Down: Prioritizing Your Marriage, Your Spouse, and Yourself for a Deeper Connection

Rate this book
You didn't get married to feel like strangers in the same house.

Between the dishes, the doomscrolling, and the daily grind, the connection faded. You're not fighting, but you're not talking like you used to either, and you're tired of doing all the work. You've become more roommates than soulmates.

Most days are a blur of chores and checklists, and most nights end with you and your spouse in the same bed but worlds apart--backs turned, both scrolling through someone else's life instead of living your own. You often wonder, Is marriage supposed to feel like this?

Maybe nothing is falling apart, but it's still not what you pictured. Maybe you're growing, but your spouse isn't keeping pace. You're doing the work, carrying the load, and wondering why you're no longer seen. Friend, you're not alone. Around you, other couples are quietly unraveling too.

Don't Burn Your Own House Down isn't a "pray harder and swallow your issues" pep talk. It's a deeply honest, faith-rooted guide for couples who still want to want their marriages but keep missing the mark. Through a decade of relationship research and hard-won wisdom, Lindsey Maestas offers rare transparency, biblical truth, and practical tools to overcome modern distractions and rebuild playfulness, honesty, and deep connection.

In this helpful and healing book, you'll learn how

Fall in love with the person your spouse is today, instead of wishing for who they were at the altarLet your relationship with God become so rich and rooted that it transforms the way you show up in your marriageBalance emotional labor without resentmentCreate new habits and disciplines that help you support each otherBuild a home that feels safe, playful, and spiritually grounded, even on your worst days

Your marriage doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs two people willing to start again . . . together.

It felt like I was listening to a friend talk about all things marriage and what it’s like to navigate a God centered marriage in today’s distracted, busy world. Without judgement, gossip and side eye. The author is vulnerable with her own story and makes it clear your marriage doesn’t have to be suffering in any way to understand and find this book useful. I might go purchase a hard copy to re-read and keep notes in!

Wow. What an incredible book.
Wow. I just finished this book. It kept my attention the entire time and that last chapter was incredible. It was eye-opening and made me cry. Self-help books can sometimes feel really prescriptive to me, but I loved this book because every chapter was really unique. It mixed personal storytelling and very interesting studies. It wasn’t predictable like a lot of marriage books are. The author managed to touch on nearly every modern marriage topic without it feeling forced in any way. It flowed really well. I’ve been a listener of Lindsey's podcast for years and learned even more about her life, her insight, biblical truth, and marriage research through DBYOHD. It really resonated with so much of my life. I think any couple, dating, engaged, or married from 1-50 years, would benefit from her wisdom. Highly, highly recommend!

This book is phenomenal. It’s the best marriage book I have ever read. The author is so genuine, honest, and authentic in sharing her own journey in marriage. She did her homework in researching and came with so many practical tips on how to have a thriving marriage. It’s insightful and helpful. I have bought it for several people. It’s also an easy read and easy to understand. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

So many good practical pieces of advice. Not sure I agree with everything but the intent to apply the Word of God to a marriage is excellent. Will reread some pieces of it again.

It's a really good book but if you want my honest opinion all you should do is turn to your spouse and start a conversation
