This manga annoys me because it is so exploitative about Mia’s breasts - okay, fine, everybody’s breasts - at the rate they’re expanding she’ll either be smothered or resemble a hydra by the time the story ends.
That’s enough to tick me off, but the other annoyance is that this volume is so, so damn funny when it’s focusing in on other things. The very first chapter just blows the fourth wall to pieces and then adds in a supposed playboy whose only skill is predicting love and giving it very dumb manga titles. It nearly killed me.
(This title thing comes back for a brutally funny jab at shojo right at the end that closes the volume out in perfect fashion.)
Saikawa, said guy, absolutely flips the hot dude stereotype on its head and steals scene after scene this volume. He has no interest in his own romance, but he’ll fight hard for everybody else’s whether they want him to or not.
That’s this story’s real secret - everybody here is just the worst, but in a way that actually works to its advantage. Even Rui’s incestuously horny sister works just because the story does nothing but use that as an excuse to dump on her constantly. She gets absolutely shredded yet again here.
Rurikawa continues to show up and misinterpret everything as sex, which doesn’t help when Rui ends up curing her of her shyness around members of the opposite sex.
Mia’s probably the least interesting character, although she gets a moment or two here and there. Her lessons with Rui are okay, but there’s no way they can sustain the manga. Luckily they don’t have to. And, honestly, that’s probably why this volume works so much more effectively than the first one.
Rui could use something more himself, but even just functioning as the straight man he gets a couple of zingers here and there. This also has one of the better iterations on the ‘teenage boy porn stash’ that I’ve seen in a long time.
Hell, even the two female friends who hang around Mia steal a scene or two. The one who is way into Mia is funny, but the other is just as good because she’ll point out the crazy around her (and maybe get a broken arm or two for her troubles).
This puts a lot of 4-koma to shame with how many gags are crammed into it. It sags in a few places, ironic given its subject matter, but overall it knows precisely how dumb it is and how to weaponize it. Yes, a comedy that’s actually funny. I just don’t know.
3.5 stars - proving that even manga that break the fourth wall and feature sisters who lust for their brother can actually work if they’re stupid enough. Basically, this has better joke density than it should and I can’t deny how entertaining it was.
