Robert Hunter #13

Obserwator śmierci

Rate this book

Biographies can be an absolute drag, so I won’t bore anyone with a long life story.

I was born in Brasilia, Brazil where I spent my childhood and teenage years. After graduating from high school, I moved to the USA where I studied psychology with specialization in criminal behaviour. During my University years I held a variety of odd jobs, ranging from flipping burgers to being part of an all male exotic dancing group.

I worked as a criminal psychologist for several years before moving to Los Angeles, where I swapped the suits and briefcases for ripped jeans, bandanas and an electric guitar. After a spell playing for several well known glam rock bands, I decided to try my luck in London, where I was fortunate enough to have played for a number of famous artists. I toured the world several times as a professional musician.

A few years ago I gave it all up to become a full time writer.

I have been known to devour Chris Carter books in a sitting, but this one wasn't a typical Carter. It wasn't sick and gory enough and also it had big boring irrelevant chunks which could have been edited out.
If you like macabre and twisty serial killer/detective books, I recommend Carter's previous works which were all works of genius.

Chris Carter.. wow, just wow. I don’t know how he does it, but every single time I finish one of his books I just applaud. Amazing stuff once again. And yes, I am so sad it is over and we now have to wait for book 14. I can’t get enough of Robert Hunter and Carlos Garcia. I seriously think I have run out of words to describe how much I love these books. They are phenomenal and a must read for any crime fiction lover out there.

Now this is book 13, and I believe you could read this as a stand alone. But be warned, you are then going to go back and read the other 12, I can guarantee you of that. These detectives will get into your heart. These killers will make you squirm and hold your breath. The Death Watcher is far less grisly than previous books, but the aftermath will make you feel ill.

This time, Robert and Carlos are on the hunt for a killer with a difference. A routine autopsy on a hit and run victim brings the duo into this case. The pathologist sees some disturbing and unexpected damage to the body, things just don’t seem right. I don’t want to spoil it but there is so much more to it… read it and find out.

So much to love about this instalment to the series. Just go out and buy it, read it, and thank me later.

Returning for another chilling Chris Carter novel, the reader must set aside all thoughts of routine thrillers and prepare to walk down a dark alley. Detective Robert Hunter of the LAPD Ultra Violent Crimes Unit is called to investigate a suspicious murder that is anything but suspicious. A man is found outrage Los Angeles with multiple fractures and wounds. While Detective Hunter and his partner begin looking into the case, they are pulled into another where a suicide victim’s injuries and witness accounts do not add up. It’s only then that Detective Hunter learns that the killer is trying to cover their tracks by targeting people with a secret they have not wanted to surface. Trouble is, the victims are so carefully selected that it will be hard to proactively protect them, or themselves. Carter delves into the darkest aspects of the human psyche with these stories and this is a stunning addition to this stellar series.

When a body appears on the autopsy table for LA Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Carolyn Hove is happy to complete her examination. A number of inconsistencies with the hit-and-run victim has her reach out to LAPD’s Robbery and Homicide Division, where a small unit is nestled and ready to help. Dectectives Robert Hunter and Carlos Garcia man the Ultra Violent Crimes Unit, one of only three in the country. Detectives Hunter and Garcia explore the case, which has been labelled a traffic accident, though something does not fit.

Dr. Hove explains that while the injuries do present as a hit-and-run, there are signs that the victim was tortured in ways that cannot be fathomed. Detectives Hunter and Garcia take up the case and try to piece things together to make sense of what they are seeing. This is soon made exponentially worse when Dr. Hove comes upon an apparent suicide victim whose injuries present as that of something more. It is now apparent that someone or a group of people have been trying to cover torture with reasonable injuries and having them found dead.

Out on the streets of L.A., a serial killer lurks with a penchant for torturing people for reasons as yet unclear. The gruesome killings shake Detectives Hunter and Garcia to the core, as they try to unwrap the case at hand. Focusing their attention on a unique pathway, the detectives make the ultimate gamble to uncover a killer, though it could cost at least one of them their life. Carter offers up one of his darkest novels to date, but surely also at the top of his collection.

While I have always found myself to be open-minded with my reading, there are limits as to what I can stomach. Many may shy away from Chris Carter’s work, with the depth of violence and psychotic nature that the killers in his book possess, but the degree of despair and angst have a purpose. Carter is able to display this psychosis and detailed disparity effectively and keeps the reader hooked as they try to discern how things will come together. The narrative flow opens with ease and builds from there, balancing between the killer’s point of view and that of Ultra Violent Crimes Detectives Hunter and Garcia. There is never a moment of rest while Carter spins his tale and keeps the reader hooked on what is to come with the depth of despair that occurs, with victims completely used to add a sense of fear and shock. There is nothing like Carter’s writing to present such a dark story and the reader is in for a treat if this is something they can handle. Characters hash out the truths and leave the reader wondering just how much they can take, as the story climaxes and leaves things out on the table for all.

Of all the authors that I read, few could meet the plot points that Chris Carter offers. He tackles some truly dark and depraved situations, but does so with aplomb and keeps the reader wondering just how far things might go. The surprises that pop up are truly intense and keep the reader wondering what is to come as well as how the killer might find new ways to shock the reader. I love these books, as this series stands out well and keeps finding new ways to shock me. Carter knows just how to pique my interest and scare me at the same time.

Kudos, Mr. Carter, for a truth frightful read I could not put down.

Buvau jau pasiilgusi Chris Carter, todėl ilgai nelaukusi puoliau skaityti 😉 O susiskaitė tikrai gerai, patinka man jo rašyto stilius.

My Thoughts:

Book 13.. Unlucky for some.. but definitely lucky for others – especially me as I was given an advanced copy to read and devour as I am a HUGE fan of this brilliant series.

The Death Watcher is the latest book featuring FBI super agent Robert Hunter, a Criminal Behaviour Psychologist turned Detective for the Homicide Special Section of the Los Angeles Robbery Homicide Division.

Can you read these books as standalones.. yes. Does it matter what order you read the books in.. not really. Should you just start from the beginning of the series… I would recommend it because whilst the books can be read as standalones there is so much character development and back stories to the plots which gives the reader a greater depth and understanding of each book.

If you have read any of the books in the series, then you will know that Robert Hunter and Carlos Garcia are partners and head up a small division within the Homicide Special Section of the LAPD specializing on complex murder cases and solving some of the most brutal homicides and tracking down serial killers. In my opinion, each book from 1-12 became more violent and gruesome and some of the books in this series actually gave me nightmares. Book 13 however, is quite different to the others. Whilst the violence and gore level has definitely been reduced considerably, this time it’s far more visceral and emotional.

The story begins when the medical examiner during a routine autopsy on an alleged victim of a hit and run discovers some strange and unexplained inconsistencies which causes enough concern that Hunter and Garcia are called in to investigate.

Their initial findings show that this victim was tortured prior to his death and had actually been missing for weeks. When yet another victim of apparent suicide shows obvious signs of torture during an autopsy, the team soon realise they are dealing with a very clever and brilliant killer who is covering his tracks and they have absolutely no idea where to start.

The Death Watcher was certainly easier to read for me, as I didn’t have to “close my eyes” or wake up screaming during this book, but it affected me more on an emotional level. I don’t want to give anything away, but should point out that there are themes of severe physical child abuse running throughout this story.

I devoured this book and 100% recommend it to lovers of crime fiction and police procedurals. So, if you haven’t read any of this series, do yourself a favour and download The Crucifix Killer today and the best news is that you now have 13 brilliant books to read and each one is better than the last.

13-oji Roberto Hanterio serijos dalis

5.0 / 5.0

Chris carter latest instalment is nothing less than a banger, from start to finish this book had a chokehold on me that I couldn’t put this down. There’s just something about how Chris carter can come up with a unique plot, execute it and still maintain the high level of quality for the last 13 books he has written. He’s done it again! Honestly you know a books good when you try and put the book down to do errands and you have to limit yourself to pages to make the book last longer. To my surprise the book is not as gory and as expected as his last book which was well over 500 pages was by far the most gory. This book touched more on the emotional wreckage caused by others - a lot different from the previous plots.

As always you can never hate the Robert hunter and Carlos Garcia duo, the pair is back again but this time something different from the usual. When a routine autopsy for what would be a normal hit and run case leads Dr Caroline Hove discovering some puzzling inconsistencies her first thought is to call our favourite pair. What Hove has stumbled upon is essentially the tip of the iceberg, a serial killer hiding in plane sight that had found a loophole in the system, capitalising off this and carry out his spree. Someone working under the radar in plane sight. Hunter and Garcia are trying to hunt the serial killer down.

This book has definitely toned down the goriness and detail. So for those readers that had to stomach the hardest in his previous book Genesis you’re in for a treat. As always, I find that the books can be read as standalone! My only issue with this book is that I wish we had the 14th and 15th book come sooner - it feels like an eternity since I last read his book!

I had been eagerly awaiting this book for so long, and while it was a good read, it fell short of my expectations. Unlike typical Chris Carter novels, which are known for their intense gore and graphic content, this one was surprisingly mild. It did delve into some emotional areas, but it didn't quite make up for the lack of usual intensity.

The relationship between Hunter and Garcia remains as strong and compelling as ever, which is always a highlight. However, I found myself almost bored at times, waiting for the story to truly kick into gear. After the high stakes and gripping narrative of "Genesis," this book had a tough act to follow, and it struggled to meet the same level of excitement.

Don't get me wrong, it’s a great book overall. But for longtime Chris Carter fans, it might not hit the mark we're accustomed to.

Starting of the page sparks with "This story was inspired by real events" and nearing end the murder counts just really shocked.
Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Carolyn Hove informs Robert and Carlos revealing about the recent post-mortem of a body is not just a hit and run car accident but its a murder, cold blood murder, tortured for days and staged like an accident.
A Psychopath was hiding from the radar for nearly 12 years. Monsters are made because of another monster.
Chris carter never fails to thrill the readers and definitely not this one. An excellent one, don't miss this.

Another excellent book by Chris Carter, whom I came across by mistaking him for the X-Files creator by the same name. That first reading somehow was a bit of a cruel shock as this book turned out to be way more explicit than any Mulder & Scully tale ever was.
This 13th novel anout detectives Hunter & Garcia both working for the LAPD being a special departement for essentially catching serial-killers.
This time a first possible victim is found by chance by a a medical examiner whose attention is caught by abnormalities in a hit and run victim.
When a second victim is found the killer does not know it yet but hé is being hunted this time.
Another albeit less explicit entry in an excellent series that has been on my list of writers that get bought on publication. And once again mr Carter did not fail to deliver, thank you again.
If you have not read any of this series feel free to read this one and you'll probably feel the urge to read the rest of the series. Don't say afterwards you were not warned.

Tad tas man labai patiko!

Genialu. Kraują stingdantis.
Carter vėl įrodė, kodėl yra trilerių karalius. Jei dar neskaitėt – pats metas!

As a huge fan of Chris Carter and his previous work, I was so excited to follow another thrilling and inevitably gruesome investigation with Hunter and Garcia. Unfortunately, though, this book just didn't hit the mark for me.

Whilst it had most of the necessary ingredients you'd come to expect from such an accomplished author, it really lacked the tension and excitement that this series is renowned for. It felt a little flat and rushed, and I also found Garcia's role incredibly frustrating, with him coming across as a bit of a rookie with only humour to contribute. I'm so disappointed that this book didn't deliver the suspense and engagement of previous books.

If you're new to the series, I'd really recommend the earlier books as they are on another level!

7.5/10: 3.75⭐️’s rounded up to 4⭐️’s
Narrator: Thomas Judd, the best out of all of the books in the series.

Keeping it short this time!
While still rather lengthy, this was my favorite out of the series. I was tuned in the entire time. I like how much Hunter and Garcia have grown as characters and how their personalities have developed. They are such a great fit as partners.

Good book!
