When high energy bills leave struggling freelancer Violet feeling burnt out, the city's LED bulb exchange program seems like the perfect solution to her empty wallet. But when the simple swap goes awry, her bright idea turns a small problem into a much larger one clocking in at 6'6...in platforms.
Will Violet's unexpected vintage visitor prove to be a spark in the dark, or is he secretly up to something more sinister?
My Date with a Light Bulb is part of The Sentient Object Holiday Series, a shared series curated by some of your favorite off-the-wall Biblio Barbie, Dakota Cockaday, Holly Wilde, Luna Cantrip, Nicole Parker, Sylvia Morrow, Thea Masen, Unfortunate Reads, and Vera Valentine. It is meant for readers 18 and over who are ready to embrace a deeper experience with some unusual holidays.
“I assume that orgasms still work the way they did in the 1970s?”
Violet's just trying to improve her living situation. Normal things. Growth. Stability. Saving money on her energy bill.
So she replaces her light bulbs.
And next thing you know, Disco Stu’s in her flat.
There’s no gentle lead-in. Just boom, charismatic, slightly chaotic light-bulb-man has entered the chat.
I adore Violet. She’s sharp. She’s sarcastic. She’s done with this caper before it even begins. She doesn’t just roll over for bizarre circumstances. She reacts. She argues. She navigates this absurd romance with wit and humour.
“Fuck it, I wasn't about to be a based-on-actual-events episode of CSI without a fight.”
It manages to be both ridiculous and sincere at the same time.
Because beneath the chaos, there’s actual heart. The light bulb isn’t just comic relief, there’s this quiet, aching theme about being replaceable, about existing only when needed and knowing you’ll eventually burn out and be discarded.
This was cute. And, well, a bit of a tease. (See what I did there? *Insert wink*) It felt like the beginning of a novel. I was actually interested in these characters and what their lives might shape up into being. A shy guy was refreshing from the "all-powerful supernatural being" schtick. Yay for cheesy book club picks (if I do say so myself).
This whole series has been so fun to read and this book was no exception. As always, Vera gives a perfectly reasonable explanation for a sentient object with loveable characters.
Just finished reading My Date With A Lightbulb by Vera Valentine 💡😂 It was a cute, short read but I need answers… from the description is his package made of glass?! 😳💀 The couch scenes were definitely having a good time 🛋️🔥 I truly never know where Vera’s writing is gonna go and that’s half the fun 🤭 Violet and Phil though ❤️💡 such an unexpected pairing!
A super fun ride! These types of books are the best way to give yourself a fun half hour break from the shit show that we sadly call reality. Thank you Vera! Keep the weird stuff coming over and over and over again.
