Goblin Bazaar, then, is merely another offshoot of the uncanny, popping up like a mushroom on the village green. Offering strange wares, you must tread with caution into its aisles. Remember, always be wary, because gaining the desires of your heart may not grant you what you wish...
The stories in this volume deal with those who buy things that haunt them. Those who cheat and discover the consequences of their actions. The truth behind real customer service. The humans who seek to keep the goblins at bay. The ins and outs of running a booth at any market, be it craft or goblin - some things are universal!
I hate writing bios, even though I love to write. If you're that interested, read my blog, where I natter on at length on writing, publishing, research, and life in general.
Okay, here we go. Sometimes you just want quick little treats of stories, and here are ten of them. Full disclosure: I wrote one of them, but I still very much enjoyed the rest. Spoiler-free basic reviews here.
1. Cost And Value by Keith Ahrens This one is a comic tale and includes footnotes. It involves what people value and what they don't, and what the physical value of a human is, if rendered down into component elements.
2. What Was Lost by Aaron Van Treek This one is a little more somber, but with a clear hint of what the value of memory is.
3. Mushrooms at the Market by Bernadette Durbin Hey, that's me! This one is also comic, and features a character who first appeared in the first volume of Fantastic Schools.
4. Seller's Market by Misha Burnett A tale of the trouble you can get into when you don't know the stakes.
5. The Soul of a Magus by Dean Stone Do you know the difference between a price and a cost? This is a tale of the costs of magic.
6. Customer Service by Robert Miller Does your repairman go above and beyond? What about your goblin blacksmith?
7. Dolly Double by Fred Phillip Do you miss those old five and dimes? I mean, I should be too young to remember them, but there was one still hanging on when I was a kid, and I got a full sense memory with the opening of this tale.
8. The Prince's Day Out by Jake Rivers This one is from the goblin point of view, and I would like to see more stories set here, because there's a whole world lurking beneath the prose.
9. Marketing Goblins by Aelth Faye What do you do when the bargain is too good to be true... but you can't go back on it?
10. Goblin Moon Hustle by Melissa McShane What does a con man do when confronted by an impossible task?
The stories and the illustrations in this book Far Excel any I have read and quite some time. I am looking forward to reading other stories by these authors and to see more of the illustrations by the artist that provided them. Thank you for brightening my weekend.
