One killer, one rebel leader, and a web of lies that could shatter a realm.
Bound by vengeance and duty, Erisa Anzû’s mission is simple: infiltrate enemy territory, establish her position, and spy from within. The only way to protect her beloved ruler and realm is to bring down rebel leader Theo Lusilim and his district of traitors.
But as Erisa uncovers more about her handsome adversary and her passion for him shifts to something other than anger, she faces a series of impossible choices.
With each step, Erisa finds herself drawn into a game of deception, brutality and harsh truths, and the line she walks between loyalty and betrayal grows ever more treacherous.
Can she turn her back on everything she believed, or will her mission lead to devastation for all?
Thoroughly enjoyed this one!! What I loved most about this book was its leading characters, him being a softer person and a caring leader and her being morally grey, actual grown up woman and behaving like one. I found myself enjoying the world itself a lot and how the story developed. Are there tropes recognizable (like an enemies to lovers)? Yes. But it still felt different and that I found great. There’s an actual enemies to lovers too!! I loved that this was an adult book without cringey spice too (lol). The reason I am not giving it 5 stars is probably the pacing, in particular a few of the events that are teased to happen but then take place off page which had me a bit confused. There is magic in this world, but I found it not explained enough to understand fully.
High 3! I loved the concept and the writing style! Unfortunately I just had a really hard time with the world building and pacing. Some things were brushed over or rushed through. I do love Erisa and Theo though, loved that they were true enemies at first, totally tried to kill each other lol!! Also the not one but TWO crazy’s twists at the end…
3.5⭐️ This book was beautifully written. What an amazing debut!! The writing had so much depth and emotion, and I was completely drawn in from the start. I loved Erisa and Theo and their dynamic was everything.
That being said, there were a few moments where the pacing felt a bit too fast. It didn’t take away from the story, but I definitely noticed it.
And Verrill… he deserved better. I will not be taking questions at this time.
The Place of Her Name is a romantasy that weaves Mesopotamian mythology with political intrigue and enemy-to-lovers tension. The book opens with a barrage of character introductions and alliances, which made it a bit slow for me to get fully invested at first. It took time to wrap my head around who was who and how they connected, particularly since the political intrigue seems pretty heavy. Erisa, the protagonist, is a skilled infiltrator with hidden motivations, tasked to undermine Theo, a rebel leader whose complexity grows across the story. Their relationship is a true enemies-to-lovers setup, but the romance arc felt rushed. I prefer if the enemies-to-lover change is prompted by more than "ooooh, he's pretty". The leap from rivals to lovers needed more buildup to be convincing, especially with Verrill’s affection toward Erisa adding tension. Verrill did NOT deserve what he got. There are some magical powers being alluded to in the story, but we don't see too much of it yet. Pretty sure Erisa's yellow eyes will give her some special ability in the future. There are also magical objects that are built around artefacts of the (Mesopotamian-inspired) gods, which gave Erisa and Theo their quest for this book. However, the abundance of these objects and how easily they changed hands weakened their impact for me. I also noticed the writing lost some of its detail in the latter half and skipped over scenes that deserved more development. By the last 100 pages, I have no idea why they are suddenly at war as apparently weeks have passed. There was a pretty big twist at the end of the book, but by then, I'd forgotten who the character was anyway so it pretty much lost its impact. What kept me going was the unique setting which is deeply inspired by ancient Mesopotamian myth, featuring figures like Ereshkigal and Inanna. The mythological callbacks and underworld lore added much-needed atmosphere, even when the plot lost momentum. I wish we saw more of the monsters in Ocridell (I think it was Ocridell) and that we know why these monsters seem to be specific to that region of the world. I also want to see more of Silas, but I assume that will be in book 2. I recommend this for fans of romantasy wanting something outside the usual Greek/Norse fare, and for those interested in new takes on ancient mythologies. Just go in knowing you may have to piece things together at first, and the romance is more sizzle than slow-burn. I received this book as preparation for the next book in the series, which I'll be reading as an ARC so I really hope the story is easier to pick up then.
"I've been in hell ever since I first set eyes on you Sunflower. The Beldams are right, you've driven me mad. Ereshkigal's torture would pale in comparison to every second of purgatory I've endured since I tasted heaven on your lips"
What an absolute hidden gem this book is. If there is an indie debut you should read, it's this. An incredibly morally gray FMC Erisa, (we open the story to her unaliving someone while she's currently sleeping with him) her only friend in the world after she was orphaned Verrill, and the man threatening to undo it all and take the kingdom from the hands of their saviour, The Autaurch.
What follows is a deeply captivating story that spans far and wide across their kingdom, with Erisa's only goal to infiltrate enemy territory, spy from within and bring down Rebel leader Theo. All is not as it seems and Erisa's saviour, the only man she's ever trusted, hasn't been entirely truthful and as Erisa uncovers more about the heritage of the land and the people she walks a dangerous line of betrayal, desire and impossible choices.
I absolutely cannot recommend reading this enough, it was gripping, devastating, heart-breaking and sunshine embodied in words. With rich lore, mythical creatures, deadly choices and political intrigue keeping you glued to each page with a delicious enemies to lovers and yearning that had my heart soaring. It has rich Mesopotamian mythology embued into the land, creatures and people, ancient relics that must be found, old magic, found family and such gloriously decadent one liners that run round your heart with barbed wire. The ending is so powerful and evocative, it absolutely sets you up for Book 2.
"My last thread of self-control snapped, and I crashed my lips into hers, desperate to silence her hateful mouth, to tame it into soft pliancy and soothe the caustic burn of her corrosive words"
I was kindly sent an ARC copy of the 2nd book in the Fires of Irkalla series, as well as The Place of Her Name, book 1 in the series.
The story focuses on an extremely strong and fierce leading lady, Erisa Anzû (The Feline) who is sent to spy in enemy territory on behalf of the Autarch (the king of the realm) who has raised her. The enemy territory belongs to Theo Lusilim, a beloved and much respected lord who is leading a rebellion to bring down the Autarch and liberate his people. As some harsh truths are revealed for each of them, and the web of lies is uncovered, they both face impossible choices and a quest across the realm. But can either of them truly trust each other?
The world building took me a few chapters to grasp but the maps and character pronunciation guide was a really helpful backup! I found myself referring back to it a lot and getting lost in the realm. I'm very intrigued to see where this series takes us.
I found it really refreshing for a fantasy romance to have a morally grey female leading character. Theo is by contrast, albeit strong and brooding at times, a soft and sensitive type who really cares about his people and making the right decision and I loved having his perspective in the writing. You really get to know these characters well and understand some of their motivations behind the way they act.
In the background of this kind of enemies to lovers tale, there's a hint of magic, witchcraft, elements of mystery and mesopotamian mythology and lost Gods and religion which added intrigue, and there's definitely more to this kingdom and these two characters than meets the eye.
I can't wait to delve into book 2 and learn more about this fantasy world.
I was lucky to be chosen as an ARC reader for second book in the series The Echo of his Fury and received a free e-version of The Place of her Name and wow I’m so grateful for the opportunity to read these books. The Place of her Name hooked me from the start when we have Erisa ending the life of someone she’s in the throes of passion with. The book follows our extremely morally grey selfish FMC Erisa who has a wicked and spiteful tongue and how she became assassin for the Autarch.
She is sent to spy on Theo who is building a rebellion against the Autarch. Erisa and Theo absolutely hate each other in true enemies to lovers style! They both believe their families have been wronged by the other and what truly happens is revealed in the book.
Needless to say that despite hating each other, they have a strong attraction for each other and I loved the banter! Their union isn’t graphic but I thought well written and doesn’t detract from the plot.
‘She turned her head to the left, skating her cheek along my mouth until it reached her own, stopping when our lips were almost touching. My heart faltered, and my breathing would have too, had I not been so suddenly desperate to suck in the whispers of breath that she exhaled. My eyes were glued to her mouth, so entirely focused on how I wanted to taste it, to experience the tang of her spite across my tongue.’
I loved the world building, the detail and how it was written just sucked me in. I did guess about the situation with Erisa’s mother however, I am not ok after those last two chapters. I was not expecting those two reveals! Can’t wait to dive into The Echo of his Fury.
I am so glad that I read this, a brilliant debut book!
I loved a lot of things about this story. I particularly loved that it's really different and not the usual 'rinse and repeat' of a lot of romantasy books. I think the influence of Mesopotamian mythology is really interesting and not something I've read before so was super refreshing. You can also tell this book has been very well edited and the author has taken a lot of time to make sure the best version of her book goes out.
I really liked the world in this and thought the plot was very intriguing and well planned. I did think it moved a little quickly at the start and definitely could have been slower to develop the story a little more but otherwise I thought it was well done.
The two main characters are so great. They've got really well developed and have their own significant personalities. I loves the tension on their romance and thought it was done so so well, I was giggling and kicking my feet. I also actually really liked that the spicy scenes weren't particularly explicit as I felt it didn't take away from the story but you still got the satisfaction of the relationship progressing.
I think for me the main thing that let it down was I felt like the characters 'secrets' were revealed to each other a bit too early in the book and they trusted each other a bit too quickly.
But overall I think this is a really strong debut book and I'm very excited to read the next one!
All I can say is wow…this book gripped me from start to finish and it was a rollercoaster of emotions. I laughed, I angered, I cried, I literally covered my mouth in shock.
The world building was beautifully done, the maps and breakdown of the names and their pronunciations were very useful and I found myself referring to them a lot (I had taken screenshots on my phone to refer back to). The characters are beautifully thought out and I fell in love with each and every one of them! The politics were simple to understand yet still so complex and in depth that it amazed me. I’m not normally one for heavy politics in books but this was another level entirely.
The romance was amazingly done, very slow burn, very frustrating at times but that fuelled my interest in this book. If you’re looking for heavy spice this isn’t the book for you, but the tension and the burn and the way it’s written is spectacular.
In all, 10/10, can’t wait for the next book to come out! The twists at the end had me silently scream crying and I need to know what happens next as soon as physically possible. Thank you to S.C Makepeace for letting me start this journey early!
Erisa Anzu, also known as the Feline, is tasked by her father figure (the Autarch) to spy on a potential revolutionary (Theo, our MMC) threatening his empire. Theo Lusillim is someone who is ready to bring down the inequality caused by the Autarch. Erisa's closest ally, her male most loyal ride-or-die friend, the Fox, has a network of spies around the land called his 'Rats'. This is a story of political intrigue, of cut-throat politics and of a genuine enemies-to-lovers. There is no spice in this book and I would consider it a dark YA piece.
This one had worldbuilding, it has magic, it has genuinely everything I could have asked for.
Sometimes the pacing gets a tad slower than I would like, but on the whole there's a good mix of action, dialogue (and scheming!), and a good spread of characters. The ending was devastating and my mouth had to be picked up from the floor with that bombshell.
As I am catching up on reviews, I have to say the second one really paid off and I am delighted to have both to read at once!
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, which I leave voluntarily
“The Bedlams were right, you’ve driven me mad. Ereshkigal’s torture would pale in comparison to every second of purgatory I’ve endured since I tasted heaven on your lips”
Theo and Erisa are the perfect mix of grumpy sunshine.
The writing is excellent, the storyline is gripping, the perfect pace to keep you gripped, a lot of good side characters who don’t take over the story, the most unhinged best friends who would protect each other no matter what.
Both Erisa and Theo have excellent character growth and it’s the perfect mix to make the perfect romantasy book.
The way I gasped and cried at the end, I cannot wait for book 2.
“Not all soulmates are lovers, but I do love you… with everything I’ve ever had. It has been my greatest honor to spend my life at your side and … I wouldn’t change a single second of it. You’re my … greatest treasure; the music of my soul. And … I’ll hear your song as it calls me to the gates of heaven, where I’ll wait for you to join me”

I don't even know how to put into words how much I loved this book. First off, it is well written and seemed cleanly edited. There are many themes/situations that are reminiscent of some of my other favorite books, (like ToG and Lady of Darkness) as we have a MFC that was orphaned as a child and taken in by someone who basically makes her into somewhat of an assassin, yet this book still managed to be its own story.
The characters are witty and clever and I like how there is some magic, but powers aren't the driving force of the plot.
We have enemies to reluctant/combative lovers, betrayal, prophetic dreams/visions, mythology, dual POV, a MAJORLY morally grey FMC, as well as great tension and banter between the characters. I will say that the spice is MILD which for once did not bother me one bit as I was so invested in the actual plot of the story.
"Your lies taste sweeter than any other poison." ahhhhhh Theo.
Thank you to S. C. Makepeace for proving a review copy of The Place of Her Name in preparation for the second book of the duology.
This is a story of a girl who is orphaned and trained to be an assassin by the Autarch. The dual POV is a Lord who is disgruntled with the current ruler and is staging a rebellion.
The world-building in this book is *chef’s kiss*. I could picture the different regions and their unique qualities, the horrifying monsters, the *delightful* Beldams. The writing really immerses you into the world.
I appreciate the nuanced and layered characters here. They are raw, vulnerable, and at times morally gray. The relationship between Verrill and Erisa was so beautiful, I wasn’t even sure which MMC I was rooting for by the end.
Also, the TWISTS. I was on the edge of my seat.
Overall, I would highly recommend and I look forward to the second book!
The Place of Her Name by S. C. Makepeace is a gentle, introspective novel about identity, family, and the quiet weight of history. It follows a woman uncovering her roots and trying to understand who she is beneath layers of silence and inherited stories.
The writing is soft but purposeful, with moments that hit unexpectedly deep. It’s not a fast-paced read, but rather one that invites reflection. I appreciated the emotional subtlety, though I wished the ending had a bit more impact.
Still, this is a beautifully crafted story that lingers long after the last page. Thoughtful, atmospheric, and quietly powerful.
This book has everything I want in a fantasy. Slow burn romance, political intrigue, hidden identities, and that delicious forced proximity that just makes the tension between our leads unbearable (in the best way).
The story is layered with grief and loss—heavy moments that hit hard—but it’s written with so much care and beauty that you feel every ache right alongside the characters.
The world is so richly imagined, with roots in Mesopotamian mythology that give it this ancient, sacred feeling. It felt unlike anything I’ve read before.
I am absolutely enamored with our strong and sassy FMC. She’s fierce, flawed, and impossible not to love. And Theo? Yeah, I have a new book boyfriend. The dynamic between them is everything—intense, tender, and slow-burning perfection.
I bawled my eyes out in the last 10% of the book. And that final twist? It caught me completely off guard.
From the first page to the last, this book had me absolutely captivated. It was an emotional whirlwind, and I loved every second of it.
What stood out the most for me where all the characters and the clever, quick witted personalities. The magic in this world never overshadows the story but drives the plot on emotions and character development, I was in awe of this way of writing style. Oh this romance was a true slow burn, even at times maddeningly tense, but that tension only deepened my investment.
There are so many layers through out that have me feeling all the emotions, an honestly more crying than I anticipated. Themes of grief and loss are also touched upon but made it feel more connecting to the reader and handled with such care that it wasn't too much to bear.
I was completely thrown in the end and I was left in a total emotional void, but that's how you know you loved a book. Patiently waiting to see what's next!
What a emotional rollercoaster! Didn’t know who to believe and who to like! I am just so out of my head right now! This had everything, war, betrayal, love, hate, tension, a bit of magic, cunning! So good! Spice was very minimal but it didn’t bother me because everything else was so much Lot of names and places that were so weirdly named that i had to read them very slow, it just added the magic about this! This book is magical even it is not magical, you know! So many good characters and the way they grow on you! Then you tought that someone is good person but in the end you see who they really are, amazing! I did cry on this but also felt so much more, the sadness in some characters was so deep that you felt it too! And oh so much betrayall! Can’t wait to read the second part of this, im so in love with this book right now!
Thanks so much for the review copy for RR Book Tours and the author. As always, this is an honest, voluntary review.
I'm in love, 100% all the way. As a matter of fact, I am FERAL over that ending and the whole book!!! What a debut! What a story! And what characters!!!! Ah, finally an enemies to lovers where the enemies really hated each other! I admired the romance, the love triangle (BREAK MY HEART WITH A TROPE I DON'T EVEN LIKE, WOULD YOU???), it was all so deliciously perfect.
But no part of this book was as amazing as Erisa herself. I love me some real unhinged FMCs and she delivered beautifully. Her ferocity, her loyalty, her heart, her rage, I'm in love with her.
The world building, the twists, the plot were all built in a way I wasn't overwhelmed by new names or places. The story flowed so perfectly, I couldn't put it down.
This book was something else. I was in a bit of a reading slump and this story has taken me straight out of it!
I’m a sucker for an enemies to lovers trope and this relationship was so hot and cold at times I loved it!
There’s quite a bit of place names to get used to at the start but once you get an understanding of it the exploration of the world is brilliant.
It’s a dual POV which I’m not normally a big fan of but for this book I LOVED it. I appreciated getting to see both sides and opinions of the FMC and MMC which just added so much to this storyline.
The way I gasped and sobbed nearing the end is ridiculous, I knew something fishy was going on but definitely didn’t clock it!
Absolutely thrilling story and I can’t wait to dive into book 2!
She’s a trained assassin sent to spy on him, he’s the lord of a domain planning a rebellion against his king, so obviously the enemies to lovers is enemies to loversing and I loveee when they still hate each other when they first become lovers, love hate is my favorite line to toe. This book follows a dual POV of the “Feline” assassin Erisa on one end, that follows the orders of the ruler and is on a mission to uncover those who are disloyal to him, and Theo, who is a Lord forming a rebellion to take back the territories and give people the freedom, lands and finances back that they need to survive. As Erisa joins him on his mission, she learns that everything she thought is not as it seems about her life and the kingdom, and maybe this lord isn’t all that wrong.
After many quests and adventures to rally people to the cause and gain special artifacts to help them on their journey, there are lots of twists, betrayals and some shocking reveals that even me reeling right along with the characters. The world building and character arcs draw you in and I felt like I was right there on their adventures with them. I also loved all of the surrounding characters and found family that they were building together. After an ultimate betrayal and MAJOR reveal at the end, it turns out everything really was not as it seemed and I could not with that ending! I need that next book ASAP! Overall my rating 4.7/5!
Thanks to the author and R&R book tours for the gifted copy, all opinions given are my own!
I've been in a romantasy reading slump for the past few weeks, but saw the ARC sign up for this book and thought I'd give it a go. And I’m SO glad I did! When I tell you I flew through this book in a matter of days! The vibrant characters really came to life as I lost myself in the lands of Irkalla. The plot is clever, without being complicated or difficult to follow and the writing is so well done! It was such a great read, I could not put this book down and I absolutely cannot wait for the next one!!
i just finished reading this book. what an absolute MASTERPIECE. i could have read 500 more pages. i absolutely adored the story and the idea that this is going to be a series has me already in anticipation for the next stage of this incredible journey!! it is incredibly well-written, and desperately needs more readers to know about it. i will be shouting from the rooftops about this book to everyone i know!!!! the ending has me craving to find out what’s next!!! you should be so proud of such an amazing book, thank you for giving us such a treasure 👏🕊️🗡️🛡️🐍✨
Irkalla is a brand new world that you are going to want to invest your time in. The Place of Her Name is hopefully just the start. If not, I'll forever be angry at how it ended.
Erisa and Theo go back and forth through the whole book. Their teasing of each other adds to the angst of this slow burn. The plot and pace of the storyline is exquisite. The author speeds up and slows down in all the right places.
I really liked how we got to see a different side to Erisa, our FMC. From the ruthless assassin, to a woman who loved wholeheartedly the few she let in 💜 There were quite a few moments near the end that had me gasping at each reveal. The whole book kept me intrigued and quickly flipping through each page eager to know more 📖
The ending has me desperate for the next book, so I can find out what happens next to all my favourite characters😩
I loved the feels between Erisa and Theo in this romantasy with some mythology thrown in (Mesopotamian to be exact). As a debut, it was perfect to set the world and pace with how things progressed. I am even more excited that a second novel is happening! Please keep writing and give us more from this universe. As much as can be given 🙏
4.25/5♡
received this book along with an ARC for the 2nd. so proud of this author and what all they have done. xx
A fantastic story of enemies to lovers that hooks you from the first page. The world building is immersive, and the Mesopotamian influence is refreshingly unique. When you think you have all the elements and characters figured out by the end, you'll be just as shocked as they are when the truth is laid bare.
This was a really enjoyable read, with a clever plot and detailed world-building. The dual narrative works really well in supporting the strong character arcs and I found myself more invested than I was expecting. Really looking forward to book 2!
I loved this book I was completely swept away into another realm, entirely captivated by the relationship that unfolded between the main characters. It was very visual and I could imagine it as a film, excited for book two!
