"First They Kill You," a medical memoir, is Charles Monagan's latest book (2025). In highly readable form, it recounts his extended battle with two blood cancers and the drama of the eventual cure through stem-cell replacement. His novels include "The Easter Confession," called "a superior whodunit" in a starred review from Publishers Weekly, and "Carrie Welton," which won across-the-board praise as a historical novel set in 1860s Connecticut, New York City, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and Boston. Monagan was born in Connecticut himself and has spent all of his working life there, first as a newspaper reporter and then for many years as Editor of Connecticut Magazine. Along the way, he published several humor books as well as two editions of the nonfiction "Connecticut Icons."
The Neurotic's Handbook is my favorite of Charley Monagan's humorous books, though I've enjoyed them all. The author's pervasive sense of woe about the world makes for a chuckle-filled romp through the ridiculous scenarios his vivid imagination cooks up. Silly as these descriptions may seem, next time you are at a party, you will notice who's hanging out in the kitchen, and on your next hike in the woods, you will choose to walk in the middle of the pack. Could it be that these neuroses find some basis in TRUTH? Moreover, his oddly calm writer's voice only lends further credence to his don't-say-i-didn't-warn-you message: caution! the world is out to get you! As a fellow worry-wart, I found myself smiling as I read each chapter and sad to come to the end of this uplifting little book. A great gift for the worrier in your life.
Oh, haven't read this in such a long time and I should have been reading it regularly to remind myself that my behavior is not so strange, well I mean not so uncommon, I am just a neurotic, that's all. I'm not alone.
A nice short book that makes light of the neuroses that are most common. A good break from serious reading if you are into classics and not much of a time commitment.
