Magic just... isn't her thing.

Everleigh Clarkson is half-elf and half-fae, and it shows. Then again, it isn’t for most supernatural half-breeds. But that’s okay. Who needs magic when you live in a city as exciting as Las Vegas?

Magic, however, seems to have other plans. Not only have Everleigh's parents gone missing, but a secret group of vigilante supernaturals is threatening all of Las Vegas–and they want to use Everleigh to do it.

Because Everleigh isn't some magically stunted half-breed after all, it turns out.

Everleigh is a wizard.

But saving her parents will require more than embracing the magic she once rejected. It will mean enlisting the help of an estranged childhood friend, Aithan Nomos–who also happens to be an elven prince.

A really, handsome, really annoying elven prince.

But if Everleigh can learn her craft - and she and Aithan can go five minutes without driving each other crazy - they might just save her parents and her city after all.

Delve into the first book of the Pandora Effect world today for snarky humor, clean romance, and supernatural adventures!

I NEED BOOK TWO TODAY!!!!!

I love Brittany Fichter’s books and clean urban fantasy, so when she announced this series I was SOOO excited and it does not disappoint! It’s so good in fact I’m putting it up on the same level as K. M. Shea’s Magiford universe which I’m a HUGE fan of which says a LOT about this book since the rest of the trilogy isn’t even out yet! (May’s soooo far away…! *cries*)

Everleigh just might be my favorite urban fantasy leading lady to date (and trust me she’s up against stiff competition!) with just how…relatable she is? I’m honestly not even sure why I like her so much but the second she started talking until the last page I was hooked on her and rooting for her above all else. Though her male costar, Aithen, has just as much of my heart! I love him and his struggles and the end with him broke my heart yet gave me hope not only for him but for his and Everleigh’s future relationship as well! Because they are perfect for each other and so cute together that I will riot if they don’t end up together and get a happy ending, lol! All the other characters from friends to villains and those in between are so well written and alive and real and I love them, even if for some that means I love to hate them, lol. (The grandfather especially is a piece of garbage I want to throw off a bridge…)

The plot is very interesting and kept me guessing on who was good or bad and even when I got several things right I also was surprised by others, and I’m VERY interested to see what goes down in the next book and if some of Everleigh’s “allies” stay that way or turn into ultimate baddies by the end.

A really strong, good start to this series! I can’t WAIT for A Wizard’s Worth!!!! If you love clean urban fantasy in the vein of Magiford go check this book out! It’s amazing!!!!

‼️Content‼️

Language: heck; sucked; dang it; suck; dang; darn it; what the heck; crap; dadgum; flipping

Violence: fighting with weapons, magic, and hand to hand (not detailed); a man is stabbed in the chest (not detailed)

Sexual: kissing (not detailed); a guy is called hot

Drugs/Alcohol: characters go to a club and hold drinks

Other: vampires/wizards/fae/shifters/elves/other supernatural creatures/beings; magic; magical powers and objects; a character is being stalked; a character is cursed

****Note: I received a free copy of the book from the author/publisher. All thoughts and opinions are most assuredly my own and I wasn’t required to write a positive review. If I was I wouldn’t have read it. 😜****

4.5 ⭐️

This romantasy & urban fantasy mood of mine has me in a chokehold, haha. 😂

Everleigh, Aithan, and the rest of the crew made this a thoroughly engaging adventure! The Las Vegas urban setting was unique, the plot twisted delightfully, and the ragtag group of friends was such a fun cast!

If you enjoyed K.M. Shea’s Hall of Blood and Mercy Trilogy or Kenley Davidson’s The Dragon of 23rd Street series, I’d highly recommend trying this one!

Content: light kissing; no language; mild violence

I absolutely loved this book—seriously, loved it! As a fan of both urban fantasy and Brittany Fichter, I went in knowing I'd enjoy it, but it far exceeded my expectations. This book has everything you could want: an array of magical beings, found powers, prophecies, and—of course—romance. It's the perfect blend of excitement and heart.
One of the things I appreciated most was how the story kept me on my toes. While I could guess some plot twists, there were plenty of surprises that kept me hooked and prevented me from predicting every little thing. It’s a delicate balance between familiarity and unpredictability, and this book nailed it.

It was just so refreshing—the kind of read that makes you wish you could experience it for the first time all over again. And let’s talk about that ending. Gah! It was a perfect ending that makes you want to know more, and now I’m absolutely counting down the days until book 2 drops.

If you're a fan of urban fantasy, magic, and compelling characters, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. It’s a wild, magical ride from start to finish!

excellent urban fantasy

This is perhaps the best urban fantasy I’ve read it in a while. The worldbuilding is epic scale and actually makes sense, and the stakes around Everleigh are so beautifully built up that I was absorbed into the story and almost read it in one sitting. Really excited for Book 2!

I tried. I really did.

The bottom line is, I personally didn't care for the tone. It smacked of teen drama that felt more for tension than for any true reason. I've had issues with this author before, but thought maybe an Urban Fantasy would be perfect. Nope. Still struggling with the angst, though this one is no where near some of her others in that regard.

Also, the pacing was too slow for my preferences. It took 40% of the book to get to any sort of training or action for the wizard protagonist. That killed my interest more than anything if I'm honest. It took so long for so little to happen. It could've been 50 pages shorter and paced much nicer. I expect that in modern/urban fantasy. Because life is more fast paced in our time, vs. a medieval-esque fairy tale or fantasy, which lends itself to slow reveals and wandering quests. My frustration peaked quickly at the slowness.

The humor was fun though. I did like that a lot.

But the nail in the coffin was finding out (from friends) what Aithan's curse was. Nope. Not my thing.

This is total preference on my part. The author is a good writer, she's conscientious about plot and tension. Just not in the way I enjoy.

I want to love Brittany Fichter’s books because she always has such interesting plots and excellent worldbuilding, but her characters seem to always lack a certain depth I search for in stories. Almost too much of a YA feel to them.

Also just a mild annoyance here, but the word unfortunately was unfortunately used way too much in this book.

That being said, when my girls get to be teenagers I’d have no issues letting them read Fichter’s books, and they would probably be more the intended audience.

If you want an urban fantasy that turns familiar elements into something "new", this one definitely achieves it. Everleigh and her world feel realistic and engaging, with unique methods of magic (loved the idea of taking magic tablets as a sort of charm) and hierarchies. The races typically stick to themselves, but because of Everleigh's background, you get to meet a lot of them and see how they interact, which was fun.
It took me an EMBARASSING amount of time to realize Everleigh's "secret", but once that was revealed, I was all the more intrigued by how the community treated her and how she could function within their world. (And can I say I loved how she didn't just master everything in a day or so? She had to STRUGGLE, not just skate by with fantastic abilities that appeared out of nowhere.)
True to form with a Fichter book, the plot reveals itself slowly and with world-encompassing consequences. Everleigh's life isn't the only one that's changed when her identity is revealed, and I loved how she came to appreciate the sacrifices everyone made so she could stay safe in the meantime. (Definitely bawled my eyes out, though, because she had a whole community watching out for her for YEARS and she never knew. My heart can't take it!!!) It was inspiring to see her handle everything with bravery and sass, but also with a sweet side (which you don't often find in urban fantasy).
Then there's Aithan. As much as I wanted to love him, I still can't get past how he keeps her at arm's length for practically the whole book. He flirts with her and pushes her away in equal measure, and while we learn to understand WHY, it still annoys me. Hot and talented he may be, but LEAVE HER HEART ALONE. And then there's his curse, which was...oof. I don't know how he's going to get out of this one, but I can't wait to see what goes down in the second book.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Mrs. Fichter's debut into the urban fantasy realm, and I can't wait for more. It's a clean, fun, tense adventure with magic, boba tea, friendship, family, and plenty of twists and turns. Definitely want to add to my physical book list for 2025!

Reader’s Notes:

-this is the first in a trilogy & needs to be read in order

-this is told from Everleigh & Aithan’s points of view

-there is some fantasy violence & death (not graphic or gorey)

Review:

I was hooked from the beginning & I loved how this part of Everleigh & Aithan’s story played out! I loved getting to see how this urban fantasy world worked and the various races interacted with one another. I loved the unexpected mix of characters and how each of them contributed to the story. I loved that were some surprises along the way that I didn’t see coming. I loved that we don’t really know what Aithan’s curse is at first but I also loved the hope given to the reader when it comes to that aspect. I really loved Everleigh & Aithan’s moments together and I am so excited for the next book!

Summary:

Everleigh is a half-elf half-fae and it shows in how weak her magic is. All supernatural half-breeds have this issue though so it doesn’t break Everleigh’s stride. She may as well be human so why not live like it? But those plans come crashing down when Everleigh gets her world rocked with the truth. Everleigh isn’t just another magically stunted half-breed, she’s a wizard and a lot of people want to get their hands on her. With a group of vigilante supernaturals on her trail and her parents unexpectedly disappearing, Everleigh needs all the help she can get. Even if that means turning to the last person she wants to…

Aithan was called in to help his childhood friend, but everything went downhill and somehow he became the only person in charge of making sure Everleigh is safe. Though he’s trained for these kinds of things, Aithan forgot to factor in one very important thing. Everleigh has grown up and no longer looks like the annoying little girl he and his brother messed with as kids…

Exciting Start to New Series

I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Wizard Awakened from start to finish. It was so cool exploring the urban fantasy world Brittany Fichter created from the creatively logical magic system to humorous ways of using magic to the surprising number of uses for boba. I especially loved the strong sense of community in this book. Each character provided something so valuable both in power and personality. It’s the kind of community we all hope for and hopefully get to experience in our ways regardless of whether we need to save the world or not. The book did a great job of balancing lightness and fun with the heaviness of the dark forces at play. This is also a good book to read with a snack as the food descriptions are tantalizing. The book takes place in Las Vegas and the author’s love for the city really shines through. It was a fun way to learn about a city I’ve never been too. This trilogy includes a clean romance and is told from both Everleigh’s and Aithen’s perspectives. This would be a great read for those who like clean romance, urban fantasy, the MC discovering their powers, a community of friends, multiple mysteries and threats to unravel in order to save the day, and lots of humor.

Note, I am writing this review late. Very, very late. But the review will be written as my reactions were (and honestly still are) when I just finished.
Thoughts: . I...have no words. Ok, scratch that, I have several words, the most important of them being: BOOK TWO HAS BEEN DOWNLOADED, AND WHY DO I HAVE TO SLEEP BEFORE READING IT?! This was quite possibly the best book I've ever read in my entire book-filled life. Here I was, wanting a fin and clean urban fantasy starring a wizard...Boom. I got it and it. Is. Awesome.

Characters:
Everleigh: Our FMC! She was awesome! Seriously, Everleigh was such a badass! You go, girl!

Aithan: Ah, yes, our poor, poor MMC...*Sobs.* I won't say much because I don't want to give out spoilers, but just... be prepared. Anyway, I thought he was great too, although I admittedly might like Everleigh a tad more... He was still awesome though!

Julia: Everleigh's bestie! I loved her. I loved the fact that she was a human thrust into the supernatural world, but not the MC. That is so rare, people! Brittany did a great job of it! I also love that her friendship with Everleigh was so true and loyal! Another rare thing when it comes to urban fantasy!

Georgie:

Maverick: Actually liked him; he was hilarious. Too bad he we could have had more of him.

Soo-Min: Okay, do I like her, or don't I? I honestly don't know. She kind of reminds me of myself, though.

King. Kostas: The periods when saying his name are not a typo. This guy is dead to me. Kill him. Dethrone him. Push him off a cliff. I don't care. Whatever happens sooner. I don't want to spoil things, so I won't say anything else except...wow. Bro, you are seriously messed up.
Why I Loved It

1. Unique Story: Well, we'll start with the obvious: It's urban fantasy, it's clean, it stars a wizard, buuuuut...you guys, this is not the typical wizard story! The wizard does not know how to use her crazy-powerful magic and does not just ✨Magically Learn✨ it all in one day. In fact, she still has a loooooong way to go, even at the end of the book, but that does not stop her! She's 'weak' with magic? Pfft, so? Who needs strength, magical or otherwise, when they have brains? Yeah. The FMC's awesome, but she'll get her own section in a sec.

2. The World-Building: Ok. I cannot stress this enough. But it is amazing. I love it. Usually, world-building is one of my biggest pet peeves because hellooooo, authors? IS IT THAT HARD TO GET RIGHT!? ...Okay. As an (aspiring) author, I can fairly say it is, but that makes the fact that Brittany managed it and managed it so well even better!
The descriptions were fantastic, like, I could practically see/taste/hear everything that was described.
I swear, the author has a gift.

3. The FMC!: As promised, we have the section for the FMC, Everleigh. She is awesome. And snarky. Very snarky. But not to the point where it's annoying, nooo, that spot is reserved for Soo Min. (And I might honestly love it with her even though I don't usually like that trait.)
She's also stubborn. Again, very stubborn but not to the point that it gets annoying.
Everleigh doesn't go and have a pity party for herself, but she isn't one of those 'girl bosses' either. And thank God for that too because I cannot stand that sort of character!

4. Soo Min.
I know, I know. I literally said that I didn't know if I even liked her, but also she reminded me so much of myself that she had to have her own section.
Remember when I said she was so snarky it got annoying? Yeah. That would be me.
She is also obsessed with bubble tea and coffee, something I am not a fan of, but I also weirdly like the whole idea of the drinks? I know, weird.
Anyway, she's also a total rebel and not in a good way (to her dad, anyway, whom I do not like anyway, sooo whatever.) She literally decided against going to college to annoy her dad.
This. Girl.
Yeah, changed my mind. Love her.

5. And finally, the friendships.
So, does anyone know how hard it is to find an urban fantasy where the friendships weren't shallow and/or weird? Yep. It's awful
So, what do when I see that this book has wonderful, true, not-weird, loyal friendships?
I read it, of course! And I was not disappointed. Everleigh's friendships are so genuine, and not just her relationship with her bestie, Julia.
It totally added to the book and is a large part of why the book is as awesome as it is.

Content:

Language: Dang; Dang it; Crap; Flipping; Heck; What the heck; What the.
Violence: Not detailed. Some characters are wounded; not detailed. Some semi-detailed battles.
Romance: Ok, this is a sloooow burn and so sweet and clean. Totally safe for 11 and up, in my humble opinion.
Other: Magic; Use of magic; Characters (including MC) are supernatural; Subtle mentions of faith and God. (Praying in difficult times, etc) subtle and not all over the book.

Recommended Age:

11+

I almost quit this book. After reading four chapters, I felt completely ho-hum about everything.

Then the male protagonist stepped on the scene and things began to happen.

Urban fantasy set in an alternate contemporary world can be tricky, but this one is done well. Although I didn’t get the best sense of Las Vegas, the supernatural additions were well-drawn.

Everleigh has an excellent narrative voice. She might have taken the twists and turns in stride too easily, but it didn’t keep me from enjoying the story.

It will be interesting to see how she learns to use her wizard powers without a wizard to mentor her. Also, how long will it take her to break the curse? And why does the elf king have to be ruthless while the fae king is a kindly grandfather?

The dynamic with the king felt a little off at the end. He still could torture her friends and family to get what he wants. How can she just refuse to accept him as her king?

I'm interested to see how Julie develops as the only human in the group.

I loved this! Fichter has branched out yet again genre-wise, and boy was it worth the wait. Everleigh and Aithan’s story is amazing and this was only the first book. While part one of a trilogy, it ends on a good note (to my way of thinking). I pretty much despise cliff hangers, but this is a perfect end. I want more, but I’m not bemoaning the fact that I read book one before the release of book two. I’m actually glad I did because I was able to savour the first while knowing there was more to come. For fans of KM Shea and Kenley Davidson, this urban fantasy is a must read.

Romance: clean! While I don’t want to spoil anything for you, there may be a kiss or two, but they are clean and there are no over the top descriptions of feelings or emotions. The word “hot” is used to describe a person, but it seems more a use of modern language than anything.

Violence: definitely PG-13. There is some on scene (not gruesome) death and fighting.

Note: I would suggest for maximum fun that you read the prequel short story before beginning this, though it isn’t necessary. (I think you can get it by subscribing to the author’s newsletter.)

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

3.25*

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Good

She might be half fae and half elf, but it doesn’t make Everleigh powerful, which is why it’s so confusing that she seems to be the target of some weirdly powerful supernatural beings.
It’s not long before Everleigh learns the truth, she’s a wizard, and that makes her sought after by any number of power hungry beings…

This is the first book in the Wizard in Vegas series, and it introduces us to Everleigh and her world.
The premise of the book is an intriguing one, with an unusual and unique magic system, and an entertaining storyline. Everleigh is an interesting character, as are the friend that she surrounds herself with.
I admit I found the twist to the story a good one, and although I did see some of it coming, it as considerably more twisty than I expected!

This is a fun urban fantasy, with interesting characters, an ongoing plot, and a different twist to the magical world. It makes for a great read, sure to be enjoyed by any urban fantasy lover.

Everleigh is rare- the child of a scandalous marriage between a fae and an elf. Since she’s mixed, her magic is terrible- unreliable and weak. She leans into blending in as a human, and is doing a pretty fantastic job of it.

Until she gains a stalker…someone tries to kidnap her….she’s attacked in broad daylight….and her childhood crush who hasn’t talked to her in years is called in as a body guard. Who does that?!

Now everyone seems to want something from her, and she might not be as weak as she thought.

This was such a fun book! I loved that Everleigh chafed under the protective restrictions her parents had around her, but still followed every one of them. She was 21 and annoyed, not stupid. 😂

Parts felt a little repetitive…it seemed like she made the same realizations a few times. However, the ending was a delicious sort of cliff hanger where everyone is physically safe, but nothing is right at all. I’m excited for the rest of the series!

This book was as fun and fast paced and full of action and humor as I was hoping it would be! I loved that this author took the chosen one trope and added her own delightful twist on it. And speaking of twists, some of the twists this book took were SO. DANG. GOOD.
I also REALLY enjoyed all of the banter between the characters, but especially between Everleigh (FMC) and Aithan (MMC). I honestly laughed quite a bit reading their banter. And so many of the side characters were fantastic--I genuinely want to know more about them. This book definitely exceeded my expectations and then some. And with the ending of this book, I'm so excited for A Wizard's Worth, and to see what else is in store for Everleigh and company!

Incredible! Even though this is the first Urban Fantasy Brittany Fichter has ever written, it was amazing!!! I loved Everleigh and Aithan and the entire unique plotline. It matched up to all my expectations, with some mystery, solid urban fantasy, and enough etherealness to make it magical. The politics were also understandable as well as the physics behind magic. The characters were incredible as Brittany really gave each character a personality that was relatable and likeable. I loved Everleigh's and Aithan's friends, though I am rather sad that Maverick left at the end. I really can't wait for the next book!

Fantastic!

This urban fantasy is sure to keep you up at night! Everleigh Clarkson had a foot in two different worlds. The supernatural side that’s let her down time and time again and the human world which she’s determined to embrace. But the supernatural side won’t leave her alone and she soon gets caught up in the chaos of their centuries-old conflicts. Add her annoying former childhood playmate and tormentor, Aithan Nomos, and her quiet little world gets turned upside down. I was hooked from the beginning. I love urban fantasy and this has been added to my top favorites. I’m eagerly waiting for the next story.

Brittany has done such a good job of creating a completely unique twist on the magical world. I’ve read many, many books on vampires and shifters and fae and wizards but none like this.

Everleigh, the main female character, has integrated well into the human world and distanced herself a bit from her magic because of her own insecurities, self doubts, and the way she’s been treated by the magical world. I loved seeing her come into her own and the relationships she builds with her friends and especially Aithan.

Plot is alright. Male POV is annoying. I understand needing to have a contrast to his…internal state at the end of the book, and to explain why he avoided emotional entanglements, but the male inner voice/POV in the beginning was too goopy. Surprising, because I just finished another of this author’s series with male POV, and he remained strong and emotive without being a sap. It’s a pet peeve, I suppose, because far too many female authors try to write the internal monologue they wish guys would have, and it’s not realistic.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

A Wizard Awakened is a fun and engrossing read. Well written, with intriguing characters and an unusual plot, this book is for fans of clean urban fantasy. The banter invokes laughs, and the storyline has unexpected twists that kept me engaged and wanting to read well into the night. Brittany knows how to draw the reader into her well-crafted worlds.
I did receive an advanced reader copy of this book, but these thoughts and impressions are all my own.

Loved it

Absolutely loved Brittany Fichter’s foray into urban fantasy. Characters you love, lots of action, and clean swoony romance. Though it’s the first book of a trilogy and the overall arc isn’t resolved, it did have enough closure for me to be satisfied for now. So not a cliffhanger ending, but still more to work out in the next two books. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series!

Settle in because once you start this book you won't want to set it down until it's finished!

I'm so happy that this author set her talents to writing urban fantasy! This book is full of witty banter, action, and swoony romance. Best of all, it's clean, so you can hand this one off to your teenagers without a second thought.

Perfect for fans of Kenley Davidson, K.M. Shea, and Shari Tapscott.

Wizards and magic

It has been a while since I read a book about wizards. I have to say this one is intriguing. Everleigh is a half breed, convinced she is a magical dud. However, she is actually the only living wizard and her birth foretold the coming of dire situations in the supernatural community. There is intrigue, myster, magic and romance in this story. It was a really fun read and I cannot wait to start the next book. Good clean read with a few swooney kisses.

Long, but worth reading.

From the first page, I was completely captivated by this book's relentless pacing and gripping narrative. The non-stop action sequences and dynamic storytelling create an immersive experience that keeps readers eagerly turning pages. For enthusiasts of fantasy and high-energy adventure, this novel is an absolute must-read that promises to deliver excitement from start to finish.

Amazing start to a new series

Everleigh is a magical mutt, half elf half fae with little control of her weak magic. When she gets a stalker, things start to happen. Sides get chosen and loyalties tested. Loved the characters (especially Aithan) and the plot kept me turning pages. Best of all it was squeaky clean, no sex no bad language. I can't wait to read the next book.

Score one for the underdog!

Everleigh's always been the underdog, the outsider, the lonely one. But she's not going down without a fight! And she's not giving upon her family and friends. Tons of turns and twists and a tragic love story that has just begun. Can't wait for the next book. A sweet, clean read with a bit of violence.
