Miriam Minger says: It's been a wonderful experience to have all my novels published as eBooks, but the greatest thrill for me as a writer is when readers take the time to let me know they enjoyed my stories...
"I have read hundreds if not thousands of books in my lifetime and not once have I ever been moved to comment on one until now. This is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. I laughed. I cried. I remained at the edge of my seat devouring every single word you wove with this incredible story. I just wanted to let you know how deeply this story moved me and to thank you for creating it."
Wow. This one left me speechless, and thankful. I had done my job, which is to make you feel like you've dropped feet first into a world that captures your imagination and emotions so vividly you might be living and breathing the story. And that's one of the purest joys of reading, isn't it? I know it is for me, and it is my hope to continue to write books that make you live and breathe the adventure, laugh and cry, and that touch your heart.

Maddie Fraser, stubborn, willful and defiant is running her family's estate after her father's tragic death at Culloden when she is forced to house the very lobsterbacks that she hates for her father's death. The captain of these hated redcoats is one Garrett Marshall. The ensuing tale of their romance is exciting and suspenseful. I truly enjoyed the story.
The issue I take with this book is that it would seem that the editor gave up after the third page. I read the Kindle edition and the volume of typos, incorrect character names, random open parentheses and misplaced words was shocking. When you are forced to try to guess what the author is trying to say numerous times throughout the book it really takes away from the story.
I will read more of Ms. Minger's work, as I truly did enjoy the characters and the story. I am hoping that the editing issues with this piece were a fluke.
Inverness-shire, Scotland 1746 One of the most brutal times in Scotland, after the battle at Inverness, where Mattie Frasier's father was killed and she was left to protect her people and run Mhor Manor. The English were determined to punish the Scots for their uprising in the Jacobite rebellion. The realities were beyond comprehension and the English murdered and pillage everywhere they went. "Ye're the mistress of Farraline now, Maddie...Tend to the needs of yer people...They depend upon yer care and good judgment" were the last words of her father. Maddie was a strong, determined woman and waged her own war raiding English supplies for food and making a name for herself as "Black Jack!" She dressed all in black as a lad had not gotten caught yet! But everything gets more difficult when her home is invaded by a group of English redcoats and in particular handsome Captain Garrett Marshall! Of all things that could happen, he had been tasked to bring back Black Jack to face punishment! A game of cat and mouse ensues but also an attraction that cannot be denied! Enemies, murderers, the hated English! There could be no possible way! Or could there? Enjoyed starting this series that Miraim Minger infused with historical knowledge of the times. It brings to light how brutal this time was and the characters exemplify the feelings and emotions that could not be contained. Be prepared to be taken back in history and become immersered in Maddie and Garrett's Story!!
The aftermath of the Jacobean revolt has left Maddie Fraser in a horrible situation. Her father and fiancé are both presumed dead and she finds herself subject to the cruel mercies of the redcoats. Maddie, alone as the mistress of Mhor Manor, is now responsible for all of its dependents. She takes that responsibility seriously and will do whatever she must to ensure that her people survive the winter.
Garrett Marshall is a young aristocratic captain in the King's army. Unlike his fellow officers, he takes no delight in savaging the Highlanders. He seeks a peaceful resolution to the conflict plaguing the two sides. He's tasked with squelching the activities of the infamous brigand known as Black Jack and putting an end to his harrying of the British supply line.
Our dear couple find themselves on opposite sides with suspicion and passion blazing on both sides. This story was full of mutual attraction, tension, drama, intrigue, misunderstood motives, and danger. There are several points in the story where the reader wonders whether one or the other will survive. The danger was palpable.
Miriam Minger has once again produced a story that captured my imagination and kept me riveted. She is quickly becoming a go-to author for me. I can't wait to dive deep into her back catalog.
Twenty-one years ago today, A Hint of Rapture hit the shelves, giving readers a love adventure with life and death risks of two people, who, by political standards, should be sworn enemies, but only found love in one another.
It's 1746, in Farraline, Strathherrick, Scotland, and Madeleine (Maddie) Fraser is awakened by her maidservant with England's 'redcoats' advancing on her home. Two months had passed since the Battle of Culloden. Two months since she became the Mistress of Farraline, and of Mhor Manor, following the death of her father, baronet Sir Hugh Fraser. Prior to his leaving for war, he bid her to take care of the people. An obligation she'd since held fast to.
At only nineteen, Maddie was forced to bear the weight of the survival of her people as the redcoats plundered and burned homes as well as sought out any and all men that may have survived Culloden and went into hiding deep within the mountains. When the redcoats destroyed what little precious memories she held in family heirlooms, she decided to start fighting back.
Dressed in all black, mens clothing, with only four additional village men to aid her, she begins stealing back food and supplies in order to keep her people fed and alive. The biggest problem she failed to take into account was that the goods she was stealing along the main road belonged to the cruel military General Cumberland, known as the Butcher, himself. All this did was throw fuel on the already burning fire of tension between the Scots and England.
Captain Garrett Marshall is a unique kind of officer; With a smidgen of Scots blood running through his veins and his aristocratic background, he doesn't exactly adhere to many of the beliefs and actions of his peers -- especially his General. This also makes him the perfect person for the Butcher to send in to capture the infamous Black Jack.
Captain Marshall and his loyal and more civilized unit of men set up base inside Mhor Manor right along side Maddie. You can only imagine that this does not bode well. Maddie despises and abhors the English -- and makes no effort to hide the fact. But, along the way, much to her irritation, Maddie starts to notice that Garrett is nothing like the redcoats that she's familiar with, which only causes her solid guard to be cracked and slowly crumbling.
However, that doesn't stop Maddie from hating the English, continuing her raids, and taking every chance she can get to put down and shut down Garrett and his advances. What surprises her (and me) most is that she's able to continue the raids right under Garrett's nose without him or his men noticing.
But, as Black Jack continues to allude the English, tension arises, and with her people's safety being put into jeopardy, Maddie realizes that the only thing left to do is surrender herself. The only problem is, both Maddie and Garrett have much to loose when Garrett finally realizes who Black Jack really is and is forced to turn in the person he's fallen in love with.
In this turn of the twentieth-century historical romance, you see a lot of the characteristics of those early novels. A little bit of an info dump at the beginning (although in its defense it does make for setting the stage for a necessary background of Maddie and the Scottish people), an annoying heroine, and repetition of the word bastard *lol*.
One of my biggest qualms I had was with the heroine. Maddie Fraser is young, thinking that she's pretty much invisible, and so head strong that she continuously makes annoying choices. I get why she was doing what she did, I think it showed great character, and at the moments when she did let down her guard, she was a very likable person. But, as the book progressed, I just lost my rooting for her. She was always up-down, hot and cold, with her feelings towards Garrett. For someone who didn't seem to care about anything but doing what was best and right, she sure did have issues with the image of what it would look like to her people if she let them know what Garrett was starting to mean to her, as well as admitting it to herself. In fact, her denial and immaturity eventually almost cost Garrett's life, when all he wanted to do was prove to the Scots of Farraline that he was sincere in their cause and in love with Maddie.
Garrett pretty much does everything he possibly can to demonstrate that he loves her -- even risking his own neck and sacrificing so much in order to save not only her but her people as well. I couldn't help but really, really like Garrett. But the poor guy was in love with a woman who just couldn't see past his "redcoat" (pun intended) until it nearly cost him his life.
The plot of the story was pretty believable -- at least in terms of historical considerations. I don't exactly find it believable that the heroine could sneak out of the same house, while living on the same floor as the hero, and having guards surrounding the house and adjoining areas, without having any suspicions whats-so-ever.
Ms. Minger did a great job at including a lot of historical facts and using consistent Scottish brogue. I enjoyed the setting, loved the hero Garrett, and also enjoyed the unique plot line and secondary characters. There's some smexin' scenes that were really good! Garrett could be an alpha when he needed to be but also knew when to hold his tongue.
Overall, I'd say I enjoyed this book despite my issues with the heroine. But, just FYI, the Kindle version of this story is a mess. As the story progressed there was a lot of formatting issues and grammatical errors.

Really loved this All the nixed emotions that come from the time, the difficult situation everyone was in all just added to the strength of the story x
After her fathers death Maddie Fraiser had to figure out how to keep her clan from starving over the winter. Disguised she raids from the forces of the Crown in revenge of her fathers death. Captain Garrett Marshall has been sent to Scotland to stop the raids and bring "Black Jack" back to hang. He and his soldiers are to take over and command from the house that belonged to Maddie's father and now her. At first sight the captain is taken with Maddie and the more time he spends with her the more he cares for her. She hates the English Captain and those responsible for her fathers death. But as she spend time with him see starts to see another side to the captain. Can either of them win in this battle or will both lose their lives.
5 stars....BUT.....I do wish it didn't have as many love scenes. The story was awesome, and I didn't realize that there were pretty erotic scenes in it. Although it is easy to skip over, you can see them coming from a mile away. I couldn't read the story fast enough.
I guess the cover should have clued me in, but I bought it on my kindle, and didn't really even look at the cover, I just looked at the book description. It was a great story though! and deserves the 5 stars.
I'm I'm not sure were to rate this book, it's better than "it was ok" but its not quite were I can say i liked it. The kindle edition was free so that helped. It was a sweet story but I found my self skimming some of the pages, it had quite a few places I thought were really slow. Historical romances is a genre that I do read,(not as much now as I use to), but this one just wasn't as good as other out there. I'm giving this book 2.5 stars.
This is a good love story. You immediately fall in love with the heroine and root for her the entire time. I love historical romance and especially Scotland historical romance so maybe my opinion was swayed by that. There is a lot of action that keeps you reading.
Good story, but end plot complications seem forced
The protagonist is willing to become like Robin Hood, but there’s not much shown on the page of her exploits in this role. The male protagonist is a decent man who works hard to overcome everyone’s perception of him as a representative of the enemy. He definitely has patience and fortitude. There are a few intense scenes that are memorable, but there are some that I wish had been developed further. The ending of the book, after our female lead must take responsibility for her actions, seems condensed but also drawn out due to an assumption that pulls her away from her love interest. It’s like a lot happens, but it’s a fast pass and filled with predictable, almost eye-rolling misunderstandings. There is a happy ending after the peril has passed, yet our hero seems to get less happiness than he deserves. There is a bit of drinking, physical violence, peril, nudity, and references to war crimes. The writing is nearly error-free.
A great highland read! The story takes place right after the battle of Culloden Moor. It was a bloody and brutal battle. The main character, Madeleine Fraser, learns her father is dead. She plans to avenge his death and rid the English from her lands. She dons a hood/disguise and leads a band of her countrymen in raids of the English. She is doing this to feed/clothe her people. The English want to capture this Brigand who they named Black Jack. Due to his Scots blood, English Captain Garrett Marshall is enlisted by his immediate commander to capture the Brigand in a peaceful manor, however, the higher commander wants death and destruction to the Scots. Captain Marshall saw firsthand the destruction on Culloden Moor and understand the Scots have been through hell. He uses Madeleine’s Manor as his headquarters and tries to befriend her for information on Black Jack! Madeleine continues raiding under Garretts nose! Only time will tell how long she gets away with it. See the story unfold!
Taking place during the wars between England and Scotland, the brutality endured by both sides made my heart ache. One can tell this author did her research!!
Maddie Fraser has vowed to protect her clan any way she can, even if it means donning black garb and leading raids for food and stock to feed her people. Captain Garrett Marshall has been sent to find this "Black Jack" and bring him to justice. At first, Maddie detests him because he's English and blames him and his kind for killing her father at Culloden and the massacre of so many Highlanders, but she soon realizes he's not like the others, he actually seems to care! As for Garrett, he tries everything to gain her trust but it certainly doesn't prove to be an easy feat!!
Between the heartache and the passion, the story kept my interest and I found the whole story well written with lots of historical facts blending in with the author's imagination.
The Brigand Bride was a story full of courage and conviction. Madeleine was the heroine and she was loyal to her people and would do whatever it took to help them. She lived a double life because of this. Doing things to help but dangerous to her. Fealty is what she felt. There were so many tragedies and betrayed people during this story that it made it sad but heartfelt with a touch of continuous tightness of muscles throughout the story. Every moment something is happening. Long and spread out thats why a 4 but great and phenomenal. The end is the best part but you have to read it. Just remember the title. Recommend any who loves historical romance with spice!
The story was intriguing and exciting at first, but then it really carried on a while longer than I expected. The male lead was a bit too rough and demanding to be my favorite, but he wasn't nearly as frustrating as his female counterpart. She was so damn stubborn and ignorant that at one point when she said she was frustrated with herself, I said "And I'M frustrated with you too!"
Gosh these two really deserve each other. And how in the world does a novel like this go on for a 12 hour audiobook? Gosh am I glad I listened to it on 1.2 speed otherwise I would've died before it ended.
If you like Outlander, you'd probably go nuts for this cuz it's just as scottish, if not more so, and drags on just as long, but if the narrator wasn't so great, I wouldn't have made it to the end of this.
This was a book about the turmoil between England and Scotland when the Jacobites had rebelled against England.Their villages were plundered and Scottish people were killed. Madeline and five of her villagers determined they were tired of the children going hungry and the mothers could not produce enough great milk for their babes. They started raiding the the wagons coming from England to their troops in Scotland. Sounds like a real deep story but honestly, it’s really wonderful. You will enjoy this story.
This story kept my interest throughout. It has all the elements that make a great historical novel. A wonderful setting, historical context, well-developed characters, the right amounts of romance and action. Maddie’s torn between her love of clan and the budding—and unwanted—love she feels for Garrett, the English soldier billeted at Mohr Manor. There is much empathy for the Highlanders as they struggle with the battles and the aftermath. A great read!
I loved everything about this book. The characters were amazing and seemed so real. I was completely drawn into the story and it held my complete attention. The historical happenings at the time were so awful for Scotland and yet the story made me feel I was there and striving for a better future for all. This was a great romance and moving tale of love and hope for all.
This story soon had me enthralled. I loved the fearless Maddie, the lengths she went to for her kinsmen knew no bounds. Enter the handsome Captain Marshall an honoured gent also the enemy whose task was to capture the Brigand Black Jack and his gang. Yet love takes no side, war waged within Maddie torn between her people and ‘The Redcoat’. Danger, betrayal, secrets this story has it all.
THE BRIGAND BRIDE : is a good book. I’m a fan of Miriam Minger and usually love her books. That said, this one seemed scattered. I never got to the point I couldn’t put the book down. The heroine seemed too easily swept from one position to the opposite... I love him, I hate him. Our hero, meh.
Maddie was an obnoxious heroine. I understand the hated but then don’t get intimate and then hate in between. Made no sense and Garr was stupid to put up with her obnoxious personality. That is not love to be abused, as he was or to be as vindictive as she was
Wow,what a fantastic story. Was a freebie.A lass looking after her clan the best way she could, with the help of some of her clan.By raiding the English to feed them.Well worth reading
The problem with Ms Minger books is as follows: her stories are very promising , strong heroines , decent handzome heroes but somehow the story slows down in the middle with non sense chatter.
This book really grabbed me. I don't like to review the story as many reviewers do, as I feel it gives too much away and spoils it for other readers. I will just say it was hard to put down.
