Harper Jackson has rescued her co-workers from a hostage situation, battled ninjas, and stopped international espionage—in her head anyway. Now that she’s no longer busy devising ways to make staff meetings more entertaining, she’s pouring that imagination into tales of breath-stealing, small-town romantic suspense. She believes that peach cobbler with ice cream is the best dessert ever and has a black belt in taekwondo to back it up. She lives in the Deep South with her husband and three canine furbabies.

Oh my, this book had me hooked from the first page to the last one of the bonus epilogue! I love the series and so happy I was introduced to Harper Jackson books. The storyline is really a continuation of the previous book but it can certainly be read as a standalone. Bree and Ford went from best friends to worse than enemies for ten years, never speaking and avoiding each other on every occasion that found Ford returning home. Suddenly the circumstances change and they’re thrown together in a most unexpected way. There’s enough suspense and action going on but it doesn’t take away from their true feelings returning. I definitely recommend taking the time to read this book. You won’t regret it! I received an ARC directly from the author through Book Funnel and am happy to leave my honest review.
This second chance romance will keep you glued to your ereader! The characters keep you entranced as the plot twists its way through the drama unfolding on Hatterwick.
Enjoy the sparks as Bree and Ford find the answers they've been looking for!
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I generally don't like second chance romance. This one was okay, but frustrating. The suspense aspect was decent, but I don't think it was as well developed as it could be.
I also found it frustrating that Peyton's mom never told Ford or even Peyton who her father was. I generally don't like it when the kid is kept secret.
Honestly, I only read this book because I was hoping to find out what happened to Gwen. We did get more info, but not as much as I hoped. Fingers crossed it concludes with Rios's book.
This is another entertaining romantic suspense from Harper Jackson. This one, and the earlier books in this series, involves a delightful cast of characters. Back on Hatterwick Island, Bree Cartwright is breathing easier because Ford Donoghue has left the island to return to his duties in the Navy. The two of them haven't spoken in ten years. Once best friends, they had a falling out when he and the other Wayward Sons left the island to join the Navy. All is going well until a teenaged girl walks out of a storm and into Bree's brewery. Then things get complicated.
It isn't long before a dead body show up on the island. There also might be someone stalking that teenager. And if that's not enough, someone Bree cares about faces some serious health issues. Oh, and there's a kidnapping, too.
As always, this author never disappoints. The book is fast paced, well written, and interesting. All of the characters are realistic and relatable. There are plenty of twists, turns, and passionate episodes.
I highly recommend this book.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had no effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.
Bree's successfully avoided Ford for a decade now, when a teenage girl walks into her bar looking for her father. Bree senses a kindred spirit in her, and instantly forms a connection that now means Ford will be in her life again, even if it makes Bree crazy to be around him. The walls she's built since Ford broke her heart may not survive Peyton and her father's persistence.
Ford has never gotten over Bree. He's also never regretted more that he broke her heart and lost her. Then she actually contacts him and the chance to at least gain her forgiveness is staring him down. But only once he wraps his head around being a new father to a teenager who has immediately formed a bond with the woman who's avoided him for 10 years.
Bree and Ford's second chance is well deserved, hard-earned, and has the most adorable treasure hunting, history buff teenage girl at its center. There's also the over-arching mystery of what happened to Gwen, and more details are revealed, but there is definitely more to be found out there. The Wayward Sons aren't done falling in love, and I can't wait for the other guys to find love.

I loved, loved this second chance, single father, healing romantic suspense story. With its perfect balance of humor, love, real life issues, suspense and spice, I was equally desperate to read the story all at once and also to savor it and make it last. Ford and Bree are two strong, intense, and passionate main characters who are real, relatable people with scars who have flaws and make mistakes, but are really just trying to just do their best being messy humans. Ford is a lieutenant commander in the Navy. He grew up on Hatterwick Island where his moms still live but is stationed far away. Bree owns a bar and brewery on Hatterwick Island. She moved there when she was 8 and was best friends with Ford until a painful incident destroyed what they had. When Ford’s previously unknown 13 yo daughter, Peyton, shows up in Bree’s brewery looking for Ford, Bree breaks the no contact barrier to connect them. And thus starts (restarts?) the journey to their HEA. While Ford, Peyton, and Bree adjust to their new normal, it appears that danger might have once again come to the small island and may even show up on their doorstep. I loved Peyton in this book, she was a wonderful and integral addition rather than a flimsy story prop. The story would not have been as rich and well rounded without the full development and inclusion of her character especially since much of the growth for the MMCs revolved around interactions related to her. This well written story had a good balance of both the suspense and romance which were each equally important to the flow of the story but I expect nothing less from this author. Note that while the main story arc is concluded in this book, the overarching story arc of Gwen’s long ago disappearance continues without a resolution in this book as well. I am excited to read the rest of love stories of the Wayward Sons.
We are back in Hatterwick Island in the Outer Banks where a group of boys became brothers by choice, joined the Navy and little by little are finding not only their way back, but also love. But the road to happiness is not an easy one. This time, the story belongs to Ford Donoghue. When he finds out he has a thirteen year old daughter that has traveled across the country to find him, He takes leave to become her guardian and father. The first person that bonds with the girl is the one he has always loved, but also the one he hurt badly ten years ago, Bree Cartwright. The moment Bree sees Peyton enter her bar, she knows the child is scared. As she discovers the girl’s background, a special bond is built between these two. Since both lost a parent at a young age not knowing what their future would hold. As they all navigate these unknowns and feelings reignite, so does the danger on the island. Is it a repeat of the disappearance of another young girl thirteen years ago, or is it something else that Peyton is unaware she knows? The author delivers another engaging story filled with emotions, family, forgiveness, trust , danger and of course, romance. A winner in this much loved series. Can’t wait to see what comes next. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
4.5 stars 🌟 - Welcome Back to The Outer Banks and a wonderful mystery romance
We are back on Hatterwick Island for book 2 in the Wayward Sons series, this book focuses on Bree (long time islander and bar owner) and Ford (her estranged childhood friend and the second wayward son to get his story).
Ford and Bree have been avoiding each other for 10 years, which was easy whilst he was in the navy, but the arrival and discovery of a 13 year old daughter means he is returning and avoidance is not an option.
The road ahead is not easy for either of them, but they both want to make his daughter the priority… so they are trying to be adults and find some common ground. They will need to find a way to move forward as the mystery surrounding a 13 year old disappearance resurfaces as well as the mysterious situation regarding his daughter’s mother’s death.
There is therefore plenty of intrigue and gripping tension, as well as romance as the story develops and Bree and Ford find support, attraction and friendship with each other that starts to sizzle as it grows.
This book has an amazing story, wonderful characters (Bree’s grandfather is the best) and keeps you eagerly turning the pages! I can’t wait for more from this series.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
This book was so good! It had surprises, second chances, and suspense. Bree was a complicated and stubborn woman. Because of Bree’s childhood, she never felt wanted and everyone left her except her grandfather. Bree and Ford had been best friends growing up, until he left her to go into the navy with his friends without discussing it with her. I can’t imagine how she felt with another person leaving her and letting her down. Then after ignoring Ford for ten years each time he came back home, Bree is the one who calls him to tell him he has a 13 year old daughter looking for him on the island. I can’t imagine how shocked Ford was to hear the news. He manages to get leave to go back to the island to meet his daughter Peyton and determine what he needs to do. I loved that Bree and Ford’s daughter were able to become close because of their similar paths. Peyton was such a smart girl for her age and looked a lot like her dad. It was so interesting watching Ford and Peyton become closer as well as Bree opening her heart again to Ford. There had also been some mysterious happenings where a girl from the island years ago went missing as well as someone becoming unalive. This was a must read for me. I didn’t want to put the book down because I wanted to see what happened next. I strongly encourage you to read it.
I adored Bree and Ford in All Along the Watchtower by Harper Jackson, book two in the Wayward Sons series, is a second chance, small town, unexpected daughter, friends to lovers, romantic suspense with a protective, former military hero and strong found family vibes.
Ford Donoghue and Bree Cartwright were friends from the time she arrived in town. Ford looked after her, especially when she was getting bullied at school. They were best friends, until Ford left town to join the Navy; not letting Bree know, breaking her heart. After that, a chasm existed between them with Bree no longer communicating with Ford: no texts, no calls, no talking, and the lost of trust she had with him. When thirteen year old Peyton comes to town looking for Ford, her father, a man she’s never met, Bree goes above and beyond to help both of them; after all she remembers being that girl, once. A truce is formed between these two, bringing them closer; reigniting the spark of sizzling chemistry between them. Ford will need to earn Bree’s trust again before they can share a future together. With someone tailing Peyton, researching pirate’s and their treasure, a murder, and Bree’s grandfather, Pops, suffering a stroke, the support of their close-knit group of friends help Bree and Ford stay sane and wrap up a few mysteries; especially the one about Gwen’s disappearance from that end of school bonfire, many years ago.
There were numerous twists and turns where I found myself on the edge of my seat while reading. All the drama, deceit, and reliving of the past made this a wonderful story. I honestly didn’t figure out who the bad guy was and what he was searching for until the end. I’m looking forward next Wayward Sons’ story.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. # WildfireMarketingSolutions #WaywardSons
Along the Watchtower by Harper Jackson is book three in the Wayward Sons series. It is part of the interconnected series where characters from other books show up as peripheral characters but can be read as a standalone with a definite conclusion.
Harper Jackson does a great job of explaining the history of the relationships and the island, the fictional Hatterwick Island on the Outerbanks of North Carolina where the entire series is set. She also manages to keep away the spoilers of the other stories and it definitely picques your interest in the other books if you haven’t read them.
On to Ford and Bree. They were childhood best friends. Ford did something that hurt Bree’s feelings and scratched at old wounds when he joined the navy. When a 13 year old shows up on the island claiming to be Ford’s unknown daughter, and Bree connects with her.
Here, we are treated to a smorgasbord of suspense, heart stopping situations, steamy romance, healing, love, and found family.
Harper Jackson pens a gritty tale which keeps you glued to the pages of the book and connect with the characters. Fantastic romantic suspense.
This is the second book in the series that I have read and I will have to go back and read the stores that I have missed as I am really enjoying them.
Bree had her heart broken by her ex-best friend Ford and has ignored him for the past 10 years but when a daughter he knew nothing about arrives in town when he is away at work Bree steps in. now she is faced with trying to decide if her hate for Ford overrules her need to help Peyton.
This was such a good book that I enjoyed from start to finish. All of the characters are strong and have each been through a lot which makes them appeal to your emotions. There is so much mystery in the book and that keep you guessing on what is going to happen next and how everything ties in together.
I liked how Ford and Bree slowly began to talk again which gradually led to more and them figuring everything out which made my heart jump for joy. I also love Ford’s moms and how welcoming they were with Peyton and then technically welcoming back Bree into their lives.
The friend group is awesome and I will definitely be reading more!

The friend group is awesome and I will definitely be reading more!- Rebecca
Bree and Ford were best friends. It began when he defended the "new kid" in school all the way until it ended. Ford escaped the island with his best buddies when they all joined the navy. His biggest mistake was failing to discuss it with Bree.
Fast forward 10 years, when a sodden waif stumbled into the brewhouse that Bree ran. Peyton asked Bree if she knew her father, Ford Donoghue. Ford had left the day prior to return to his duty station. Bree who had also been an abandoned child, realized that she needed to protect Peyton until Ford could return.
Peyton's mother had died. She was in foster care in Oregon. She found letters her mother had left to Ford. It was the first she knew who he was. She runaway from the foster home to seek out her father.
The mysteries began immediately. Peyton met her grandmothers. Ford rearranged his life to provide for his daughter. Peyton began a treasure hunt with Bree's Pop and the Greybeards. Meanwhile, the island friends join to keep Peyton safe.
This story was captivating, filled with suspense, emotion, friendship, fantastic characters, forgiveness, small-town living where everyone knows your business, surprises, heartbreak, second chances, love, and laughter.
Ford and Bree's relationship is complex, with a mix of love and hate stemming from their past. Life changes bring Ford back to his hometown, giving them a chance to start over, or at least mend their fences. Peyton stood out as a character with her clevernes s, bravery, and sense of humor. She played matchmaker and had a special connection with the older residents of the town. The ongoing mystery from the previous book adds depth to the current tale, with new developments and danger lurking in the town. The question of whether the past is connected to the present keeps the suspense high.
Overall, we enjoyed the intriguing plot, the slow-burning romance between Ford and Bree, the witty banter, and the strong friendships. The story kept us guessing and engaged throughout.
Sometimes love stories are more than 2 people who connect. They are about family and friends or location, a sense of community. This book seems to hit those marks but it is a murder mystery as well. The plot is very complex and well written. It focuses on current events and events from the past that has shaken this community and its inhabitants to the core. It has some twists that include a 13 years old girl who travels from Oregon to the Outbanks of North Carolina. She goes in search of a man she doesn’t know but it is important that she finds him. Peyton is in search of answers that she found in letters addressed to Ford by her mother. This sets a series of events in motion when she finds herself in the brewery/bar that Bree owns. Bree and Ford have to deal with their past issues while dealing with more pressing matters that brings everything full circle. This a beautiful story. Harper Jackson brings her characters to life on this small island town. It is well written. I would give it more than 5 stars if possible.
This is Ford Donoghue and Bree Cartwrights' story.
So when I was first introduced to this author and read Won't Back Down, this book was the one that I was looking forward to reading. The constant curiosity about what went wrong with Ford and Bree was real!
Although never boring, I thought that the story seemed to move a little slowly. The author seemed to have everything with the suspects blow up around the last 30-20% of the book. So it was wrapped up quite quickly. I think that's why it felt that way. Because not a whole lot of really suspenseful stuff happens until towards the end.
I did Love the storyline/plot of the book. I thought the characters were great. I thought the whole piracy thing was an interesting plot to add. It was a nice thing for Peyton and Ed to bond over. I loved Ford and Brees' story. I loved that she stood up for herself. She said how she felt and didn't hold back when they had to confront their past.
Overall rating 4.5 stars.
I'm looking forward to reading the future books in the series. ❤️
*4 stars* I have been really into suspenseful reads that also have a mixture of romance in it. It was also my first read by this author and am definitely intrigued to read other books. You can read this one as a standalone but I feel it may be better to start from the beginning so everything is a bit more clear as it's part of a series. I could definitely follow but still have a few questions although the majority was answered. I liked how the relationship between Ford and Bree evolved. A romantic suspenseful read that had you trying to figure out what would happen next and how it all would end.
Ford & Bree have known each other a long time but a lot has happened which made their relationship fall apart. As Ford signed up for the navy, he now needs to come back to town after learning he has a daughter he never knew about. While trying to figure out how to navigate everything, there seems to be a threat looming near them but when tragedy strikes in Bree's life, it may bring Bree and Ford closer again although she stil has many walls up. Will it all be okay in the end?....
I loved the series, Kilted Hearts, by Kait Nolan (author's other name). It was enjoyable and written in third person. This book was written by Harper Jackson (Nolan's alter ego) and written in 1st person which I hate. But the blurb sounded good and I had enjoyed Nolan in the past. So, I decided, against my better judgement, to read it. I hated the book, especially the 1st person. I was lost from the first page. Since I had not read the first book in the series, I did not know who any of the characters were. This is definitely not a standalone book. The lost feeling did not get any better as I kept reading. Who are the Wayward Sons? Who are the moms in relationship with the Wayward Sons? This was not explained in the first part of the book. It really would have been helpful. After Ford met Peyton, I gave up. I could not get into the book. I skipped to the last 3 chapters to finish the book.
I am one and done with this author. Unless Kait Nolan goes back to 3rd person, I am finished entirely with the author.
The characters and the story captivated me right from the start. Once best friends with Ford, Bree has avoided him for the last ten years. Luckily with Ford in the navy, that hasn't been hard to do. Ford has been trying to apologize to Bree for years, but she hasn't given him the opportunity. He realizes he lost an opportunity for more than friendship with Bree. When a teenage girl Peytons asks Bree how to find Ford, Bree realizes that she needs to reach out to Ford. Adding to the second chance romance, there is mystery and plenty of suspense. I received a free copy of this ebook from the author. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. I love how Bree having a similar experience as Peyton pulls Bree into Ford's and Peyton's life. I also love how the point of view in the story revolves between Ford, Bree, and Peyton. It helped me connected with them and their feelings.
I have no words. Or, perhaps it’s more accurate to say that I have too many of them. But all the words that want to come gushing out are all about the incredible revelations, twists, and surprises this book holds. I will share none of those because I refuse to ruin anyone else’s enjoyment of the book by spoiling the shock and awe. I will say I'm a sucker for a second chance. And since I’d started falling for Ford and Bree nearly from the first words I read about the Wayward sons, this was a pair I needed to see find their way back to their Happy Ever After. I adored seeing these two find their way back together. My heart hurt for the obstacles they needed to clear first, but it was so worthwhile to see them find healing and forgiveness in the journey. I kind of don’t care that the book is over, I'm nowhere close to being ready to let go of these characters. I need more of the Wayward Sons, and I need it now! I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.
What a book! I have been eagerly anticipating the latest instalment in the Wayward Sons series, and wow—Harper Jackson absolutely delivered. Returning to Hatterwick Island felt like coming home, and Bree and Ford’s journey toward their happily-ever-after is an irresistible, page-turning delight.
Though this is the second book in the series, it stands strong on its own. There’s an intriguing underlying thread woven through the story that hints at bigger things to come, and now I’m desperately awaiting the next book to see where it all leads.
The chemistry between Bree and Ford is electric, and the supporting characters shine just as brightly. I especially adored Bree’s grandfather and Ford’s newly discovered daughter, Peyton—both added depth and heart to the story.
I fell in love with Harper Jackson’s writing from the very first book I picked up, and this latest novel is no exception. I can’t recommend this book—or this author—highly enough. Bring on the next one!
All Along the Watchtower is the second Wayward Sons book. It can be read as a great stand-alone but to fully appreciate the back story and connections within the book I suggest you read the previous book and prequel as well.
This is a welcome return to Hatterwick Island. This is Bree and Ford’s story who went from being best friends to total avoidance in a blink. Circumstances force Bree to make contact and just maybe give these two a second chance. These are fabulous characters, as are all The Waywood Sons, their families and friends. The writing and storyline are simply wonderful and you really feel as if you know these people. The ongoing mystery plays out in the background whilst the romantic suspense is the main focus. I loved this book and definitely recommend it to all all fans of this genre or to anyone who wants a fantastic story they can get involved with and characters they can genuinely care about.
I have been waiting not so patiently for the next Wayward Sons book to be released and it was absolutely worth it! Bree was tough as nails and adamant in her hatred (or so she claimed) of Ford, who she feels abandoned her and hasn't seen in more than a decade. He still loves Bree, though he is cognizant that he is the villain in their loss of friendship, but so wants it back. Who knew it would only take a secret child (now a teen) and more danger from a long past island mystery to bring these two back together. The addition of Peyton and her attachment to Bree may have helped a bit, but those underlying feelings cannot be denied. I enjoyed watching them rekindle both the friendship of the past as well as work towards their HEA. And the suspense woven throughout was . I'm going to attempt to be patient until the next book comes out, but when a story/series is this good, it's tough!
Whether this author writes under Harper Jackson or Kait Nolan I'm a huge fan!
I read book 1 and I feel the reader will find this more enjoyable if you read that book first. Crossover characters that build into this story.
Great main and secondary characters. A great whodunit will keep you guessing until the end! Many villains, great suspense, twists, intrigue and romance. This is a story that is about second chances and the timeframe for forgiveness was spot on.
Lord's name used in vain and crude words. Lovemaking outside of marriage, heat level 4 out of 5. I felt a connection to this couple so it was filled with love.
If you want to receive an extended bonus epilogue, you have to sign up for the author's newsletter. The story picks up 2 years in the future and is worth it.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, nice set up for next story, HEA, and steam. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase, which I recommend. (ljb)
When you’ve read an excellent book like All Along the Watchtower it stays with you long after you finish the last word. Ford and Bree were friends growing up, however, something happened along the way that created a rift between the two. Ford suddenly becomes the father to a thirteen-year-old girl and Bree (for as much as she wants to stay away from Ford) can’t help but be there for Peyton as she navigates settling on Hatterwick Island and a decade-old mystery.
As with all of Harper Jackson’s stories, there is suspense, mystery, and spine-tingling action. She created a world of characters that I am consumed with. The story is captivating, and I couldn’t put it down. This is a wonderful story of second chances, found family, coming home, and forgiveness woven into a thrilling whodunnit. I highly recommend this book and the Wayward Sons series. I can’t wait for the next release!
The series has had these 2 characters in it and hinted that they had a history that went bad, but we never found out until now. He screws up and she won't forgive him, not even talk to him. But then his unknown daughter shows up and she wasn't a part of what went wrong! I love this story and the mystery of everything going on and how it brings these 2 together. Written from both views- 3 if you count the few from his daughter, I loved everything about it except it felt a little unexpected when the love scenes came. I was so into the story and then bam, feelings. Could just be me as I was into the story and trying to figure out who did it and didn't think their feelings could erupt so quickly after so long. The story gives us more to the history of 15 years ago when the girl went missing from their little town and I can't wait for the next book.
Another winner by Harper Jackson, this is a second-chance romance between Ford and Bree. It is also a found family story. Ford and Bree have never stopped loving each other, but it takes the arrival of Ford's daughter, Peyton, to get them actually talking to each other. Ford has to convince Bree that he will never leave her again. That is not an easy task since Bree has built strong walls around her heart. A lot is going on besides the romance. Ford and Peyton have to navigate their new relationship as father and daughter. There's a murder that ties in with some of the events involving the main characters. There is somewhat of closure on a decade-old disappearance. All in all, it was a terrific romantic suspense story. Check out the series and fall in love with Hatterwick Island and its citizens.
Ford and Bree grew up being the best of friends, always together, knew everything about each other, and yet one night changed it all. Bree spent the next 10 years acting as if Ford never existed and trying with all her might to hate the guy that broke her heart. This story had it all from the friend group, family, small town suspense, and so much more. When Peyton shows up into town looking for Ford things start to take off and this forces Bree and him to face the past, but Bree is very strong willed and not having it. I loved everything about this story, my only wish was that the time in between wasn’t so long because you know these two are meant to be together, but Bree’s reasoning seemed weak, yes was justified for a little bit not 10 yearlong grudge. Overall, I loved it and can’t wait to see what will happen next.
