Losing My Faith in Progressive Christianity

Rate this book
AN HONEST JOURNEY OF DOUBT, DISILLUSIONMENT, AND THE PERSISTENCE OF DISCIPLESHIP

Have you had serious doubts about God or your salvation, or do you know someone who has? Truth about the Christian faith can turn out more complicated than we started out knowing. In Losing My Faith, recording artist Dave Stovall (of Wavorly, Audio Adrenaline, and Renew Creative) tells his story of growing up in the Christian faith and, piece-by-piece, finding it dismantled by intellectual challenges and growing cynicism toward the evangelicalism he promoted on tour.

Losing My Faith invites you to enter the heartbreak, the humor, and, above all, the honesty of a journey from deconstruction to discipleship. Perhaps Christianity has left you feeling confused or even disillusioned. Even still, are you willing to be open-minded? Then you'll find Dave's story a helpful guide.

"Losing My Faith is such a timely book for those who once walked the narrow path and then became disillusioned. Dave's journey shines a light on the hope that is found only in God's grace and mercy."

-TOBYMAC, Grammy Award-winning artist, producer, and songwriter

"Dave Stovall is my co-worker and the worship leader at our church. This is a life-changing book, written by a man who is thoughtful and who is the real deal, dealing with the real issues today."

-BOBBY HARRINGTON, Point Leader, RENEW.org and Discipleship.org

"This beautiful and candid story of Dave re-constructing his faith couldn't be timelier for this generation."

-MARK STUART, two-time Grammy Award winner, lead singer of Audio Adrenaline

Dave Stovall is an author, speaker, singer/songwriter, worship minister at Harpeth Christian Church in Franklin, TN, music producer, musician, and videographer. He is the lead singer of Renew Creative and Wavorly and a former bass player for Audio Adrenaline. He is married to a beautiful sunflower of a girl named Summer and they have three kids Bear, Byrdie, and Basil.

I really appreciated reading Dave's story. His willingness to open up about his doubts as well as his struggle to accept certain aspects of traditional Christianity was refreshing. However, I felt that in order to call this book a "journey," Dave needed to spend more time exploring the path he went down. He did a great job of setting the scene with his upbringing and background in the Church. Then he spent a Chapter or Two sharing some of the questions that led him away from the Faith. But then it seems as though the rest of the book was written from his perspective of new found Faith. As someone who has gone through some of the same things as Dave, I felt that it was a very abrupt turn around (although I'm sure that was not actually the case) as opposed to a journey. I would have like to have heard more specifics about what aspects of Progressivism Dave embraced and which foundational truths he never wavered from.

Perspective- I Suppose

Reading this journey was well thought out and penned. Hearing how others can come back to Historic Christianity is definitely eye opening. The youthful raising and stepping into Progressive Christianity are very familiar with me. For me: one of the things holding me back from Historic Christianity is that I’m a gay man who isn’t accepted into the historic view.
I went into this read thinking it would be another relatable story of growing up in the Baptist Church, and later discovering Progressive Christianity- I honestly was a little surprised to discover the return to Historic Christianity. But I celebrate the work and journey of the author.
Easy and fast read- do so with an opened mind, no matter from what angle the approach is made.
