A really interesting listen about Formula 1 (man I'm really into F1 books these days). Lightly hated the amount of kudos he gave to Lance Stroll (who sucks) but it was really interesting to hear a lot from the drivers.

Superb read for fans of F1. Luke’s storytelling is beautiful with a wide scope of the importance of its impact on fans, teams, and drivers.
I loved how he addressed racial and gender disparities, something I’ve noticed as I’ve watched races. The importance of inclusion for the LGBTQIA+ community and wrestling with the issues of racing in countries where homosexuality remains punishable by law. How F1 is addressing ecological and climate issues, and what it can do better.
Just a splendid read from start to finish.

If The Formula is about the drama of Formula 1, On The Grid is about what keeps fans viewing the sport long through the drama - the people.
Like Inside Mercedes F1, On the Grid takes an inside look into the people behind the scenes that makes F1 happen. However, I found that this book was far more interesting than the Merc book which I slogged through the back half of, since On The Grid has a much broader scope, covering drivers, fans, and the mission to make this global sport more efficient and environmentally friendly.
My favourite chapter in particular was the one covering the creation of the COTA track and going into the designer of some of the most iconic tracks on the calendar. The author is so clearly a fan and I enjoyed the way that he touched upon the ways that he was a fan of the sport, and especially the ways he saw the future of the sport and the way its changed in recent years due to Drive to Survive. The entire section where he spoke to the creators of The Paddock Project podcast and touched on female fans was a great read.
I would pair The Formula and On the Grid together as a primer for F1. One for the drama and glitz and glam, and On the Grid as an ode to all the people and passion that keep F1 running.

As the title suggests this very much "behind the scenes" - stories of how a career beginning in F1 engineering led to a highly regarded croissant, the sports DEI and sustainability efforts and a link to F1 and the author's own relationship with his mother.
If you’re looking for hardcore technical engineering insights, there are other books you’ll have to read – this book is going to appeal to the fans that are more interested in the human and social issues side of the sport.
As the title suggests this very much "behind the scenes" - stories of how a career beginning in F1 engineering led to a highly regarded croissant, the sports DEI and sustainability efforts and a link to F1 and the author's own relationship with his mother.

Luke Smith’s excellent new examination of Formula 1, On the Grid: Life Behind the Scenes of Formula 1 is written both for newbies, like me, and old vets who’ve been watching F1 for years (or decades). It has just enough history to inform the newbie, but not so much as to bore someone who’s already very familiar with the history of the sport. He manages to explore all of the various nooks and cranies that exist in the sport, from the drivers to the mechanics and technicians, to the team leads, the fans, track designers and owners. He also is unafraid to explore critical issues of diversity and inclusion, the role of money in the sport (not just at the top, but even at the bottom), environmental impact, safety concerns and whether the modern sport is the same as the earlier one (in a lot of ways…it isn’t). He’s unafraid to be critical where he needs to be and be a fan when he wants to be, which I found quite refreshing.
That’s not to say it isn’t without some criticism. Any book like this is going to be a product of it’s time and this is no exception. And Smith is up-front about this, stating on the last page that it was written during the 2023 season and the first part of 2024. But as a result…it misses the massive developments from the midway to the second half of 2024, with Red Bull finally really showing some cracks and the somewhat awful behavior of it’s star driver, Max Verstappen, on and off the track. 2024 ended with a new constructor champ (Maclaren) – the first non-Mercedes/non-Red Bull constructor champ since 2009 (and once dominant Red Bull came in 3rd…3rd!). All while Max came under criticism for how he drives on the course, how he spends his off hours, and how Red Bull used their second team (something Smith doesn’t really explore much…the legality is clear, but the ethics of allowing Red Bull to have two teams are definitely something that should have been discussed) to deny points to their rivals.
He also somewhat sweeps the allegations against Red Bull principle Christian Horner under the rug – which is what Red Bull did. But none of that should take away from what is an outstandingly excellent book about the sport…where it was, where it is, and a bit of where it might be headed. And the timing for it is just about perfect – set to come out right as the 2025 season will get under way in Australia…a season where for the first time in years, there looks to maybe…just maybe…be the most wide open season for the championships ever. And the last season before some major rules changes come down for 2026.
Me…I’m a fan. And I’m looking forward to a new season. Thankfully, this book filled in a lot of gaps in my own knowledge of the sport…but even if you don’t know F1, this is a fantastic look at modern sport in all it’s greatness and awfulness. Highly recommended. 4 stars.

F1 jest szybka, jest ekscytująca, jest historyczna, jest technologiczna, a także jest polityczna i dokładnie takie same przymiotniki mogą opisać tę książkę.
Książka skupia się na sezonie 2023 oraz początkowej fazie sezonu 2024, jednak ilość odwołań, nawiązań i ciekawostek z całej historii F1 czyli od 1950 do 2024 roku, jest ogromna co zasługuje na zdecydowane zwrócenie uwagi bo jest to na prawdę wysoka jakość.
Rozdział "Śmiertelna pasja, przerażająca radość" jest tym rozdziałem dla którego czyta się książki tego rodzaju, mistrzostwo które potrafi zachwycić czytelnika, wzbudzić w nim poczucie smutku i wywołać łzy, a jednocześnie pokazuje że jeśli robi się to co się kocha to nawet śmierć nie jest tak straszna jak mogłoby się wydawać (choć bez wątpienia bardzo bolesna dla osób które zostaną kiedy my już będziemy po drugiej stronie).
Z książką mam jeden problem, dotyczy on faktu iż autor daje wrażenie że pewnym osobom pewne rzeczy należą się tylko z powodu tego że mają inne pochodzenie, kolor skóry czy płeć. Nie, nie i jeszcze raz nie, rozdawnictwo wyższych stanowisk i pozycji tylko z tego powodu że jesteś mniej reprezentowaną grupą społeczną jest jawnym oszukiwaniem i deprecjonowaniem pozycji faktycznie wyżej wykwalifikowanych osób które na dane stanowisko zasłużyły. Wyobrażacie sobie że osoba które nie umie pojechać "zwykłym" samochodem 140 km/h po autostradzie nagle wsiądzie do bolidu F1 i pojedzie 350 po ciasnym torze w Monako? Albo to że osoba czarnoskóra dostanie wyższe stanowisko tylko dlatego że jest czarnoskóra, choć doświadczenie i wykształcenie ma mniejsze? Ja sobie tego nie wyobrażam, a takie wrażenie wyniosłem z wypowiedzi pewnych osób z tej książki.
Mówiąc o aspekcie czysto sportowym to "Na polu startowym" jest fascynującą książką, pełną emocji które poprzez wydarzenia opisywane przez autora wylewają się na czytelnika.
Książka ta jest świetną lekturą zarówno dla osób kochających świat F1 i znających go od podszewki jak i dla osób które są nowe w tym świecie i dopiero chcą się dowiedzieć wszystkiego na temat tego pięknego i fascynującego sportu!

Now, if you know me, this review - or the fact that I picked up this book - isn’t exactly a surprise. Give me anything F1-related that leans into the technical side and packs in the detail, and I’m sold.
This book offers a great mix of behind-the-scenes insight into what really goes on across the paddock. The balance of information and entertainment is spot on never overwhelming, always engaging.
The writing feels natural and immersive; you can tell the author knows the sport inside and out. Since it’s a new release, it includes plenty of fresh moments from just last year, which makes it both exciting and impressively up-to-date.

I liked the content within this book, however it is probably not what I had expected when I first picked up this book.
Whilst the stories told in the book are at times insightful and heartwarming, it does jump around between people which makes it hard to read at times.
This is very much a book about what happens around the world of F1, rather than focus on racing/team dynamics of other books/documentaries.
Unfortunately not at the top of my list of recommendations regarding books about F1 and not something I would read again.

I’d decided recently I should get into a sport more seriously. I love tournament soccer and sporting events that happen every few years, but I thought something more regular would be fun. Formula 1 is where I landed. So I’m learning more about the technical side, as well as the history (and fighting for my life in a fantasy league).
I liked Smith's approach here. He covered a lot of important historical moments, key figures, and long standing trends, through interviews with drivers, principals, and officials, while keeping an eye on the future. It had an approachable, casual feel.
F1 is becoming more popular. Smith writes that F1 can and should be for everyone, and I think he’s right. Standout chapters for me included The Billionaire Boys Club, Fantastic Fans, and ‘Stick to Sports’. It was cool to learn about how Formula One used its expertise and might during the peak of the COVID crisis, and how certain races are significantly more climate friendly (shoutout the Netherlands and Australia).
I do think it was sad that the social justice focus boiled down to “Hamilton cares and talks about this”. It shouldn’t be Lewis alone nudging this sport forward when it comes to equality.

This is a quick read and an interesting overview of F1 in recent years, but with so much going on in the sport, I couldn't help but feel like certain chapters didn't work. I wasn't that intrigued by designing tracks (especially since we know that the upcoming Madring design is so far not a hit) or the person who left F1 to sell croissants. Also, having quotes that weren't for the author's articles or this book felt a little weird, especially when he got such good material in parts! I particularly enjoyed his insights into Esteban Ocon's journey.

Fajna pozycja zarówno dla kogoś kto dopiero wchodzi w świat F1 i pokrewnych motosportów jak i dla starych wyjadaczy. Może nie dowiedziałam czegoś nowego, ale przyjemnie mi się czytało. Dla kogoś kto dopiero zaczyna swoją przygodę z F1 może być łatwiej zrozumieć, że te wyścigi to nie tylko walka o 1 miejsce na podium, ale kawał historii która łączy pokolenia fanów motosportów. Zaznajomieni z tematem czytelnicy mogą przypomnieć sobie kluczowe wydarzenia, które miały wpływ na zmianę bezpieczeństwa wyścigów, jak np tragiczne dwa wypadki młodych kierowców na torze w Spa w krótkim czasie.

If you are a fan of F1 racing like I am (team Ferrari here and I treasure the red cap with yellow logo gifted to me by my kids), you will thoroughly enjoy this behind the scenes book covering the past and present of the sport. Topics are not explored in depth, but with a more casual feel. I came to racing during the Covid lockdown after watching the Netflix documentary, Formula 1: Drive to Survive. Ironically, I hate to drive and Luke Smith doesn't even have a driver's license, but neither is a requirement to finding the sport fascinating. In these chapters Smith focuses on the 2023-24 season providing interesting stories about the drivers like Ocon, the traditions, the risks and the cars themselves. Some chapters are more gripping than others, less so the one that focused far too much on the the podium champagne shower. My favorite stories dealt with the engineers and the impact they had on the development of CPAP respirators in the UK during the pandemic and creating the best croissant in Melbourne.

Thanks to NetGalley for this one! This was just a great look into modern F1 & the present challenges. I enjoyed the look into the different facets and components of F1, and the stories told. Would recommend to anyone interested in F1 or those who already love it.

i really liked how things like mission 44, women in motorsports, sustainability, track safety, and the financial barriers associated with actually entering the sport was discussed. luke smith has spent many years following the f1 circus, and his passion and knowledge of the sport is on practically every page.

Oof, this book is a tough one to rate. I’ve always enjoyed Luke Smith’s writing in the Athletic, but unfortunately I don’t think his style translates the best to a full-length book. On one hand, this book provided great insight on the inner workings of Formula 1 and all the people involved in the sport, but on the other hand, I found its thematic organization distracting and at times at odds with the chronological narrative of Smith’s travel anecdotes. I enjoyed all the information and insights Smith provided via interviews with non-public-facing people in the F1 industry, but the information was often reduced to episodic anecdotes that did not always match Smith’s personal chronology. I would have preferred the book to be organized chronologically race-by-race (and with it any race-specific stories/anecdotes) rather than thematically/topically, but that is a personal preference.
Overall, while I have my reservations that long-term/seasoned/well-informed fans will learn a great deal, On the Grid provides an intriguing look at the inner workings of modern-day F1 that would be a perfect companion book for fans looking for something deeper than Drive to Survive or just getting to know F1 beyond the public-facing figures.

Really great read and so insightful as to what happens behind the scenes in F1. This book is a really great companion to the Netflix series “Drive to Survive” as between the two you get a complete understanding of the F1 world. Luke has a great writing style and the books chapters were so well balanced hopping between different aspects of the sport. Thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who watches F1 or to someone who want to understand it’s not all glamorous!

Polecam ją każdemu, kto chce poznać Formułę 1 z innej perspektywy – z jednej strony technicznej, a z drugiej tej bardziej ludzkiej i politycznej.

„Na polu startowym. Za kulisami Formuły 1” to wolno snuta opowieść na tematy wokół jednego z bardziej widowiskowych motorsportów (jak dla mnie). Autor skrupulatnie, krok po kroku oprowadza nas po zawiłościach F1. W książce nie będzie nudnych, suchych faktów, liczb bez pokrycia czy też danych nieinteresujących przeciętnego czytelnika. Będzie za to wiele ciekawostek z życia kierowców, nie tylko tych aktualnych! Znajdzie się miejsce na liczne wspominki: o kobietach w F1, o najstarszych zawodnikach, o tych, którzy by dotrzeć na szczyt musieli mieć w sobie wielką siłę walki. Bo przecież F1 jest prestiżem: 10 zespołów, 20 kierowców na sezon, wielkie pieniądze, sponsorzy i ogromne niebezpieczeństwo, nawet pomimo nieustannie doszlifowywanych norm bezpieczeństwa.

Gdy zawodnicy przygotowywali się w Melbourne do rozpoczęcia siedemdziesiątego piątego sezonu Formuły 1, ja wstawałam o nieludzkiej czwartej rano, by przypatrzeć się bolidom, a także kilku nowym zawodnikom. Natomiast w przerwach pomiędzy sesjami treningowymi sięgałam po książkę Luke’a Smitha.
To nie jest zwykły reportaż o poprzednim sezonie. To książka opowiadająca o codzienności Formuły 1. O problemach zdrowotnych mechaników, którzy w ciągu sezonu odbywają ponad 50 podróży międzykontynentalnych – nawet nie chcę sobie wyobrażać, jak silnie muszą walczyć z jetlagami. 3.5 stars rounded up for me! As someone who is a fairly new F1 fan (thanks to my kids), I was excited to be given the chance to read an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers for the opportunity.
While I am a pretty avid reader of non-fiction, On The Grid is written in a fairly unique style where Luke Smith tends to blend facts with interviews and conversations so it reads more of a story then simply a book full of F1 facts.
There is so much more to F1 than the cars and drivers, the pit crews and even the lavish lifestyles, exclusive wild parties and mega yachts. It is a rather intimate machine of many individuals who are the best of what they offer and there are many more individuals who have their hand in making F1 so fascinating than you could ever imagine.
As mentioned in the synopsis, there is a legendary bakery in Melbourne whose croissants exist only because of F1 technology but I also learned that mechanical engineers from Mercedes helped suffering hospitals with a lack of ventilators and CPAP machines during the COVID pandemic using the F1 mentality of "this is good, but how do we make it better?"
Every single individual outside of the principals and drivers plays a huge part of the team, even if their part seems to be miniscule. Not only do the drivers obviously need to be precise but the team needs to work in perfect unison and Luke Smith gives us a behind the scene view into the extraordinary sport of F1 racing.

Nie całe dwa tygodnie odezwała się do mnie przedstawicielka Wydawnictwa Otwartego, z pytaniem czy chciałbym się podjąć recenzji książki o kulisach F1. Zgodziłem się praktycznie od razu.
Bardzo lubię książki o F1, ale pewnie o tym wiecie.
Tym razem jednak dostałem do rąk pozycję, która sięga głębiej w świat F1, niż inne książki które miałem okazję przeczytać.
Luke Smith , autor " Na polu Startowym. Za kulisami 1" , jest dziennikarzem pracującym dla The Atlehic i relacjonuje wyciągi F1 od ponad 10 lat i postanowiłem swoje doświadczenia wrażenie przenieść na kartki tej książki.
Autor bardziej postawił na ludzkie historię, ból, radość czy walkę z nierównościami społecznymi. Jest tutaj mowa o sportwashingu , który stosują kraje arabskie czy wcześniej Rosja. Smith poświęca temu tematowi duży rozdział.
Jest to tylko jeden z tematów, który otacza F1. Jeśli się zdecydujecie sięgnąć po książkę, zobaczycie jeszcze więcej, ile emocji przynosi ten sport dla zespołów zawodników. Including interviews from drivers and team members throughout the 2023 and early 2024 seasons, “On the Grid” covers every aspect of F1 that you can imagine, from the glamour and luxury, to the environmental and social impacts, to the effects races have on the nearby communities and people who reside in them, and even how the tracks come to be.
This book reads like a long magazine article, which is apt given its journalist author. It’s well-constructed and flows well, which makes it easy to read—and hard to put down once you’re on a roll. I absolutely loved every moment I spent reading this book, and I was disappointed for it to have come to an end. Certainly, it made me a fan of Smith’s reporting—I never expected to be moved so emotionally reading a book about Formula 1.
This is a must-read for new and old Formula 1 fans everywhere, particularly for those interested in a behind-the-scenes look that you might not get anywhere else, perhaps other than the Netflix series “Drive to Survive.” And if you don’t already love the sport, then this book will surely help make a fan out of you.
