An action-packed Progression Fantasy from Aaron Shih, #1 amazon bestselling author of Corruption Wielder.
Gain power. Fulfill an oath. Defeat anybody or anything in the way. Since ancient times, magic power has been gained through contracts with divinity. Most mages are pacted to one of the eight core gods or the sixty-four lesser ones, but not her.
Lily Syashan—formerly Lily of House Byron—holds an oath to a forgotten god. Exiled into a peasant village after her parents were executed for treason, she swore to gain power and succeed where her family failed.
To build her power, she will need to kill, destroy, and ruin. Whether her target is an Altered monster or another human getting in her way, Lily must be ready to defeat them all.
The journey to the top won’t be an easy one, but she is prepared to do whatever it takes in this new Progression Fantasy epic from Aaron Shih, bestselling author of Corruption Wielder and Demonic Devourer.
To be completely honest, I may be slightly biased about this book. I had a fun time reading it and a fun time writing it, and a lot of the people that have read it have greatly enjoyed it as well--it might be less suitable for a non-webnovel audience, but I do enjoy it a lot :D
This book's premise is sort of similar to Demonic Devourer but without the protagonist being a demon who devours things. By that, I mean that the protagonist is an outcast, who has an atypical set of morals and attitude towards murder, and there's a budding sapphic relationship between the two leads.
I feel like the author's writing really leveled up between Demonic Devourer and now. The world is more fleshed out, and there is a lot more nuance to everything, even in basic conversations. If I had to criticize something, I'd say that I feel like the pacing is sometimes very subtly off. But I'd give the writing level of the author a 4.5/5 by itself.
This quickly jumped to near the top of my favorite ongoing series, and I already pre-ordered the next one.
Maybe 3.5 stars. Cons: - the romance elements feel forced - I can't believe that someone will go on mission after mission when they are coming so close to dead in each one.
