Omega. A cursed designation. There's nothing I want more than to not be what I am. Being an omega has brought me nothing but heartache and loneliness. Francine Miller is the omega who lost her family and witnessed her mother being ripped from her arms. Francine Miller bounced from foster home to foster home, biding her time against the alphas who wanted to use her. But I'm not Francine Miller anymore. I'm Frankie Sumner. I'm the beta nanny just trying to hide so I can survive. And the plan worked, until it didn't.

Now I'm stuck hiding my identity from the men who scare me the most, the alpha fathers who hired me to be their live-in nanny. The alphas who smell like forest and whiskey and citrus and coffee. The alphas who don't know they're my fated mates. And if the truth came out, I don't know what I'd be forced to do.

Can I hide forever? Can I escape my own biological destiny? Or will I end up falling into the life I never wanted?

Hiding from Fate is a standalone omegaverse novel. While there is a HEA, there are many dark themes on and off the page.

********************************

TW/ this is a reverse harem omegaverse relationship (so you can expect lots of delicious why choose and forced proximity) featuring as nanny with a traumatic past. As dark omegaverse, there are several dark themes on and off the page, including dubious consent issues, past emotional and physical violence, and attempted sexual assault.

This story contains explicit sexual content, including somnophilia and a breeding kink between age gap lovers.

Although there is a HEA to look forward to, please exercise discretion.

********************************

This is book 1 in the series. The books are standalones and can be read in any order, however, they are best enjoyed when read in order since the timelines are interconnected.

‼️Fair warning that this is not a nice review and that you don't have to read it. Thanks.‼️

Tells instead of shows. The entire book is mainly inner monologues telling us stuff that happens. I usually DNF books like that but this one had me curious.

No grovel. They feel bad, sure, but basically the FMC's health requires all three of them and the hospital threatens to put her in a coma and legally steal her baby then put her in a breeding program if she doesn't go back to her alphas so she goes back...and one by one accepts them back because her body needs them. That's not redeeming the characters. They all acted the same as before.

OW drama because what else can you do to add drama when your FMC is a pushover? Conveniently, the MMCs' twin daughters have never been drawn to their own mother's scent, even as babies, even going so far as to being upset by it, but they're drawn to the FMC's scent immediately and they recognize her as pack. 🙄 This is lazy writing. You don't have to make the OW a complete person this way and can more easily make her a villain if her own very young daughters don't like her.

She's their nanny but she feels called to cook for them. 🙄 She's cooking immediately upon arrival for months trying to get their attention, but one alpha especially just ignores it all. Later, she's recovering from bond rejection sickness where she almost died and she's still wanting (no, NEEDING) to cook dinner for them. She's just soooooo fulfilled by being their pseudo tradwife.

Two of the MMCs did a complete turnaround the moment they scented her. Went from being hostile or ignoring her for months to the point where she thought they hated her...to immediately giving her scent related nicknames and calling her theirs. Again, lazy writing. Even the pushover FMC called this one out.

Her safety is at risk, she's pregnant, and yet they do everything wrong to protect her. Why is this always the story? They know who's after her and that she knows their house and schedule. So of course every time the omega is alone or there's just one of them with her because of some scheduled/yearly event, something happens. The secret way into their house that only someone who knew about it could get into is (SURPRISE!??) exactly how people sneak into their house. The ex they keep just telling to go away who doesn't listen and keeps showing up places, suddenly escalates to confronting the FMC in person and they're somehow shocked that she did that??? And when she escalates again and again they're caught off guard each time. These are textbook, basic, overdone mistakes in romance with this same plot and they're making ALL OF THEM.

Not even going into the one MMC that's fully ready to rape her as she cries in fear and has to be held back by his packmates when they discover she's an omega. No, his descent into going feral doesn't excuse this for me. I don't have an issue with dubcon. That's not what this was though. She was telling him no and was terrified of him.

Oh and there's this gem:

"I’m also calling Cindy [another OW] back. I don’t want to treat her like a back-up plan, but we need one. I’m not losing you, Diego. I’ll bark you into bonding an omega if I have to.”

This is the pack lead talking of force bonding the one going feral to literally any other omega, and he's doing it in front of the FMC as she cries at the thought of it bc it hurts her but he just keeps going. Except for the one MMC, none of the other two have made a genuine effort to, like, date her? Court her? Even get to know her ffs. They just expected her to jump into bed with them, even knowing her traumatic past, and are disappointed that she hasn't. This book is so off I can't even explain it.

"He doesn’t bother knocking on her door. He goes from disinterested alpha to possessive mate in the huff of a breath."

Literally don't know why this particular MMC (the pack lead) always ignores her??? HE doesn't even know why. Anytime his packmates tell him that he's hurting the FMC with his actions he's just brushing it off with the equivalent of 'cool story bro.' But when the story needs him to be her alpha the switch flips. And that's the entirety of their relationship.

Time only passes in this book when it tells us. From one paragraph to the next, weeks or months can pass and suddenly we're being told again about things that happened in that time we've missed.

"Nighttime arrives and she bonds with Diego in a fit of mutual release and tears, both overcome with the sharing of emotion between them."

More telling instead of showing. Bonding, of all things, is an important moment worthy of showing, no???

"Leo was last, but he edged her for longer than both of us combined...It was excruciating to watch. A rapture to witness..."

.......😴 Is the witnessing in the room with us?

"We can’t feel you consistently, can you please tell us why you’re trying to block us out so much?"

These guys are truly dumb. They just bonded her then lied to her AGAIN. She even called them out on the lie she caught them in. She scented the same rose scent she smelled on one of them before, only this time they left her nest right after her heat and came back with it. How are they not piecing this together???

Everyone just kind of... exists in this story. When someone is upset, especially the FMC, they just let it sit and dance around for what ends up being weeks each time (as we're TOLD randomly). It's like they're hoping them saying "just trust us" but giving her no reason to will tide them over. One alpha can't handle the FMC knowing their ex is sniffing around again? Let's wait it out I'm sure it'll go away. Another wants her desperately? He's gonna ignore her completely while they're home all day because he can't have her immediately, that'll definitely help with her trust issues. They want her to bond them to save the one going feral? Let's just let her keep being nothing more than our nanny/cook, I'm sure sometime soon she'll have an epiphany (and she does, ffs).

Absolutely hated this one. I wanted to keep reading it for the somno content but then EVEN THAT WAS TOLD TO US INSTEAD OF SHOWN.

Hmm, I’m not quite sure how to rate this.

The editing was a little frustrating. The book was riddled in punctuation errors, especially in dialect. Whilst this can be frustrating, I don't take these into account in ratings or reviews, outside of just mentioning it so you're aware going in.

The story however, was really interesting. I could barely put it down because it was addicting especially at the beginning.

Up until the third act break up.

(some spoilers ahead, also these are just in my opinion, and how I perceived the story from this point forward.)
The fmc's biggest fear of alphas is that they don't see omegas as people. They're objects to be bred. Less than second rate pack members.
Prior to discovering she was an omega, they always referred to her as 'beta this' or 'beta that' (and not in a positive way. In a she's pretty but "she's still just a beta" way.) When they discover she's an omega, same thing. It's always 'omega this', 'omega that'. I think they referred to her out loud by her name maybe three times in the book? So, even if they're 'good alphas' they have this mentality and it never changes in the book.

She leaves because after her heat and bonding, they're cold towards her, lie to her and hide things despite her pleading with them not to. They shut her out and (unintentionally) emotionally reject the bond with her. Thus, confirming her fears mentioned above - she's not a true pack member or mate. Just an omega to be bred and used during heats then tossed aside. (Her thoughts exactly).

She doesn't choose to go back to the pack after she leaves, she ends up in hospital and the OSC contact her pack alpha who they give a choice but the fmc they don't they tell her this is going to happen and by this I mean they are told if the alphas in her pack don't want her back, she will be put in a coma until she gives birth, the baby taken from her and given to the pack (because it's their property), then her bonds will be forcefully broken and her heats sold to the highest bidders.

Her options are literally a pack who emotionally abused her (even if unintentional) or the government selling her to sexual slavery and abuse for life. That's not a true choice. She chose the lesser of two evils.

When they finally are reunited? The first word their pack leader says is "omega". Not Frankie/Francis. Not are you okay because she's in a hospital but "omega". I didn't like that he still couldn't call her by name.

Diego's mindset did not change at all. Direct quote from fmc:
"His compliments make me recoil. His touch makes me wince. I don’t trust him."
Instead of doing anything to reassure this, he thinks: "I wish that baby was genetically mine, then she’d want me around her all day and night. It’d be a biological imperative to be near me." Not because she would want to but because she would be biologically forced to. Then he builds her a library and poof it's all better.

The only saving grace in the pack are the twin daughters and Leo who was still a bit of a pushover, agreeing to the other two's demands even when he could see it was destroying his mate. He just kept agreeing and going a long with it. Outside of that, he was the only pack member to see her as a person. He had to keep telling Jacob and Diego that they're taking away her choices, that they're taking her autonomy away from her.

This was a fantastic book. One of the best Omegaverse books I’ve read in awhile and that’s coming from someone who loves Omegas and loves it when they are the epitome of omeganess (is that a word? 🤣). The Omega in this book didn’t like being an omega, would have given it up if she could, did not embrace anything about being an omega and had some serious trauma related to being an omega and all alphas, yet somehow, the author still made me fall in love with this book and I have not a single complaint or criticism.

It was really well written, the characters were engaging, the story had enough angst to keep it interesting, but not so much that you were just over it and I loved the HEA.

Highly recommend you give it a go.

This is a complicated review to write.
At first glance, this A/B/O universe is formulaic: Omega (FMC) hates alphas because they are all dangerous so she takes suppressants, she finds her fated mates, doesn't tell them, they find out, the suppressants stop working/can't get them/they are tainted, forced heat, OW drama, old alphas, then conclusion. It's a very standard format in "dark lite" OV books.

I had hopes for this one; it seemed like the FMC was going to be a black cat kinda FMC, but she isn't. She starts to crumple almost immediately, not being able to control her body or her urges.

The MMC's are very stock as well: the golden retriever who can't stop thinking about sex; the one true romantic; and the alpha leader who hates omegas/doesn't want one in the pack due to [insert dumb reason here].

In this world, people don't present what kind of designation they are until teenagers/young adults, yet the twins are already being called little omegas because...well, 'cause? Like, that didn't make sense.

The biggest issue of this book is that one of the MMC's almost rapes the FMC (twice) and it's just not dealt with well at all. Like, the morning after one of the MMC's jokes with her about needing birth control about her upcoming heat. FMC was almost raped by your packmates and you're joking about fucking her already? The men are also delusional about the attempted rape by saying things like "she must have realized after a couple weeks we were good alphas." WTF? Didn't the two attempted rapes disprove that? And the guy who attacks her? He gets butt hurt everytime she flinches around him and rejects his touch. WHAT? Then she blames herself for the attack: "Yeah, Diego fucked up, but to be fair, my proximity was fucking with him, and we didn’t even realize it. Diego is still the kind, coffee-scented alpha that offers me practical advice and has a desperate yearning to be loved and belong."

The third half of the book is when everything starts to fall apart. The return of Virginia wasn't well done or well written and the return of the foster parents was rushed and underdeveloped.

According to the "about the author" info in the book, this author states that she helps legal students with grammar and spelling for college students. So why are there so many spelling, grammar and odd sentence choices in this book?

Let's not forget the TERRIBLE HORRIBLE NO GOOD nicknames for this FMC. My god, it just got worse as the book progressed.
FMC's name is Francine which is already shortened to Frankie and Franny. Is that good enough for everyone involved? Nope. Here's the list of crimes against the FMC: applesauce, honeycrisp, baby, little omega, apple slice, omega, sweet little omega, Frankie girl, sweet thing, omega-sauce, manzanita, mommy omega, sweet omega, my delicious honeycrisp apple, my stunning, kind little omega.

𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲: Multi-POV

Every Omegaverse handles designations differently. Most lean into themes of inequality and loss of autonomy for Omegas—but this one? This one takes that and supercharges it with cruelty.

The world in this book is vile toward Omegas. Their designation feels like a life sentence, and that’s exactly what Frankie’s facing. She technically gets her HAE, but you can feel her suffocating under the weight of having no real choices. She just got lucky that her Alphas turned out to be decent humans (after they pulled their heads out of their asses and groveled appropriately).

Jake and Diego? Fine. But Leo? My golden-retriever-with-a-heart-of-gold MMC stole the show. He’s the only one who truly treats Frankie as she deserves—aware of her need for autonomy and boundaries. And the scene where he’s running around the living room celebrating like he just scored a goal when she says his name? Cutest damn thing I’ve ever read.

Honorable mention to Marcus, who wins silver purely for being 1000% Team Frankie, no questions asked.

Apparently, there are three more books in this series, so… catch me not sleeping.

Don't let the cover fool you - this one has a bit of darkness

First of all, the author's bio claims that she teaches law students to use proper punctuation - cool story but this book is RIFE with incorrect word usage (improper use of worst instead of worse being the worst offender), some of which are blatant typos but others are obvious vocabulary failures. It was beyond annoying and consistent throughout the entire book. Whoever edited and proofread owes a refund.

The book itself is a bit..... Odd. I don't hate it but I don't like it either. The story somehow waffles between very dark society issues and what can only be exemplified with Frankie's confetti - unicorn magic. It's a rollercoaster that gives whiplash.

Frankie is a decent FMC but she's as disconnected from the reader as she is from the MMCs. Leo is easily my favorite character in the book - consistent, sweet, funny and dedicated from start to finish, he makes me question how pack leaders are chosen in this author's universe. Diego and Jake are pretty trash for a good portion of the book and their redemption is a bit weak. The antagonists are plentiful, evil and deserve much worse retribution.

The thing that bugs me most is the obvious lack of enthusiastic consent by Frankie. It's a theme used too often in omegaverse - consent or risk death - and it's one that should not be ignored or whitewashed away since it's an actual problem in society. Consent unwillingly given is not consent.

This is my first time sinking my teeth *wink* into the a juicy apple-flavored omegaverse and wow! What a rollercoaster of emotions!

I’ve heard about the fandom and how it centers around animalistic traits and olfactory characteristics. The author expertly weaves in explanations on the social dynamic and biology of alpha, beta and omegas for noobs to the omegaverse, like me.

With that said! Frankie Sumner, a resilient and independent coffee shop beta lives for herself and does what she can to keep herself on her own two feet. But, as fate would have it, meets her “mated Alpha” she meets the others in her “pack” and the thrilling romance of submissive betas, omegas, claimed bites and scenting, ensues!

I’ve read copious amounts of romance and it’s sub genres and there is something very special about Hiding from Fate. We have well-developed connection to the characters, strong lead voices, a villain I can hate, a dramatic plot and electrifying romances (RH) that get deep *pun intended*. The passionate nature of these alphas and protective family dynamic really appealed to me and had me sniffing for more lol.

Lastly, I’d like to commend the author for being cognizant about mental health issues and holding space for these sensitive conversations. They were handled with care! Well done!!!

Like others who have reviewed this book, I noticed a lot of grammatical errors that mess with my enjoyment of the book. There is also the issue of a lot of thoughts and monologues, and not a lot of action.
I get that Diego has F.A.S., however, that doesn't change how he treated Frankie when Victoria started coming around. It felt like, to me at least, that he was using Frankie as a cure and not their mate.
They also never actually try to court Frankie despite that being a good way to build bonds and trust that they lost. They mention it but never do it.
This book mentions a lot of other things that it never does including the Woods pack starting to participate in omega rights, Frankie licking/sucking Diego, and meeting the other families.
I liked the spicy scenes as they were very detailed and extremely hot. I liked Frankie's relationship with the girls. I like the subtle connections like how Emma and Ella both have fruity scents like they were always meant to be Frankie's kids.

I sort of enjoyed this book, but didn't really like the way that Diego's extremely problematic behaviour was just put down to his hormones, and that she forgave him so easily.
