Bonnie and Clyde meets Gone Girl and The Guest List in this insanely tense thriller.
The Sexiest Man Alive just beat another man to death. Now he’s on the run from the police and paparazzi.
Connor always knew Roman’s temper would get worse when he faded from being a Hollywood A-lister… But she never imagined he would become a wanted murderer.
She has finally gathered the courage to end the marriage. But, just as she’s ready to act on her plan, Roman bursts through the door. He grabs his gun, confesses that he just killed a man, and tells her they’re running away to Mexico… together. This isn’t a movie, this is real life. She has to keep acting like his doting wife while they run from the law. And he certainly can’t know that she was about to end things!
Roman didn’t have time to hide the body and he knows someone will find it any minute. They have to get on a plane to Mexico before then, but his plan gets derailed when they’re trapped by a mob of autograph-seekers at the airport. How long until the body is discovered and police tie him to the crime? How long until the news story breaks and his face is on every screen? And can he really trust Connor, or will she run away at the first opportunity?
She suggests they drive north and hide out at her dad’s remote island cabin. But can she keep him from snapping as they deal with fans and police on the way? What will happen when they’re alone on an island where nobody can hear her scream?
Chapter 1
Today Roman - This morning
Stand like you’re on the cover of a boating magazine, he thought. No. A yachting magazine! That’s it. Big deck energy. Roman was dangerously unfit to drive a power boat, much less try to drive one in gale-force winds. But he doubted anyone watching him right now would know that.
He added a broad smile to his confident gait and pointed at random islands over the windshield.
He felt like he could keep this up for an hour or so. Hopefully less, although he really had no idea how far the island was. But he could play this role. He had played Neil Armstrong for god sake. And he was good! He had also played Troy Aikman and George H.W. Bush. Of course he could play the role of John Q. Boater for a little while.
He glanced at his wife, who was exuding less confidence. She stared up at him with concern in her eyes. Those eyes, he thought. Those goddamn big brown eyes that always disarm you.
She stood in the shotgun position next to him, although calling it standing might be generous. It was more like she was stumbling and surviving.
And Connor was definitely soaking wet right now. The oncoming waves had not been kind to her. A few had knocked her back into her seat and made her cough up mouthfuls of lake water. But she seemed too nervous to stay seated and she popped back up to her feet each time.
She needs to know that this is fine, he thought. She needs to know that you’re in control.
“You have to zig-zag up the waves and ride them!” he yelled over the motor. “Like you’re surfing,” He pointed at a seagull flying off to their left and laughed.
I agree with the other review that this book would make a great movie! Safe to say R.J. is now an auto buy author for me. I’m ready for a third novel 👀
