As a seasoned operative for a clandestine organization known as Arrangement, he’s spent years retrieving arcane artifacts from all corners of the world, unintentionally leaving nothing but death and destruction in his wake.
However, when his missions start yielding powerful relics he wasn’t sent to find, Isaac realizes there’s more at play than his employer lets on. Toss in a violently homesick demon, a surly feline familiar, and a possessed moonshine jug, and Isaac’s fortune goes from bad to worse.
Can Isaac uncover the mystery of these unknown artifacts before his enemies—or his supposed allies—catch up with him? Or will Death finally play its hand?
On my YouTube channel, I exclusively review self-published and indie fantasy books. I ended up giving this book an 8.7/10 overall, and it was such a nice palette cleanser from more intense epic fantasies. You can check out the full review here: https://youtu.be/5M-1VsSDwFM?si=3apyn...
Here is a brief overview of my breakdown:
Immersion (worldbuilding): 9/10 - Super easy to get sucked into this world. I loved how this seemed to capture the essence of YA and make it for adults. The different settings and situations were very engaging and interesting throughout.
Names (characters): 8/10 - I like Isaac as the main character. He's very capable and he has enough mystery to keep the reader engaged throughout. I also loved all the side characters and the people he interacts with on each mission. I would say the dialogue maybe is a little cheesy, but it didn't feel out of place. I also wanted to see more character development from Isaac.
Da Magic (& creatures): 9.5/10 - Love the way he portrayed the creatures of this world and the magical artifacts and just how he uses magic in general. It was so much fun and had clear rules, which just made how Isaac solved different situations so interesting. Big fan.
Infrastructure (plot, pacing, prose, etc.): 8.5/10 - This almost felt episodic, with each mission as its own storyline while still being part of the larger whole. The pacing kept me locked in and I was done before I even realized it. Very natural flow made it effortless to read. I do feel like the ending was lacking and I would've like to see more cohesion with the other missions tie into the finale better.
Enjoyment: 8.5/10 - I'm not usually a fan of urban fantasy, but again, this book just felt effortless to read. It was so much fun and reminded me of Supernatural, so I was locked in right from the start. It's nice to have a break from the exhaustive reading of epic fantasy from time to time.
If you like urban fantasy or are fans of the show Supernatural, you have to give this one a read.
I was excited to read this book and it didn't disappoint! The mystery surrounding Isaac and his profession gives off major Supernatural vibes and I LOVE it! Think: Dean Winchester when he's not possessed by Angels, but a little more competent—and then throw in a cat that's just as badass.
If this ever got made into a movie, it would be a banger for sure!
Isaac Unknown. I enjoyed this adventure through the dark magics. Isaac's odd journey plays out with some heavy dark themes, but his corky humor keeps it light and fun. It's an easy enjoyable read. Imagine a seance with dad jokes. The story is unique and refreshing. I'm looking forward to book two whenever it comes out so that I can continue this journey.
