Stripburek: Comics from the Other Europe

Rate this book
With a unique perspective on world politics and issues, Eastern European comics artists have much to offer, but they rarely see print in the Western World. With this latest selection of contemporary comics from the former socialist block, however, Stripburger has solved that problem. Stripburek is 216 pages of fresh sequential art, all in English, representing works from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Ukraine, and Yugoslavia. Also included is an introductory essay by Darko Macan (full of post-communist bitterness), a special feature from Kazakhstan, and a list of useful contacts. The featured artists, many of whom are already cult figures in their own countries, include: Aleksandar Zograf, Danijel Zezelj, Jakob Klemeneie, Jacek Fras, Ascold Akishin, Igor Baranko, January Misiak, Pavel Cech, Milorad Krstic, Roman Tolici, Sasa Kerkos, and many others...

Cassidy sent me this book when he was finished with it. He really liked it. I didn't like it so much. I appreciate that these cartoonists were working under the repression of communist rule, but I just wasn't so excited about any of the comics in the book. I am pretty picky about the comics that I like, so I think my not liking this book so much is more about me and less about the comics in it.
