러시아의 소설가ㆍ사상가. 도스토예프스키, 투르게네프와 더불어 ‘러시아 3대 문호’로 일컬어지고 있다. 1828년 남러시아 툴라 근처에 있는 영지 야스나야 폴랴나에서 명문 백작가의 4남으로 태어났으며 어려서 부모를 잃고 고모을 후견인으로 성장했다. 카잔대학에 입학했으나 중도에 자퇴했다. 1847년에 고향으로 돌아와 농장일에 전념했으나 실패하고 1851년에 카프카즈의 군대에 들어갔다. 1852년 처녀작 『유년시대』를 발표하여 투르게니에프로부터 문학성을 인정받기도 하였다. 그 후 러시아 농민의 비참한 현실에 눈을 뜬 그는 농민계몽을 위해 야스나야 폴랴나 학교를 세우고 농노해방운동에도 활발히 참여하였다. 그후 1869년에 완성한 『전쟁과 평화』로 세계적인 작가로서의 명성을 얻었으며, 러시아의 현실과 고통받는 러시아 민중의 삶을 여러 각도에서 포착하여 생동감 있게 그려내 오늘날까지도 19세기 러시아 문학을 대표하는 세계적 문호로 인정받고 있다. 1870년대 후반기에 수많은 정신적 갈등과 고뇌를 겪고 난 뒤 홀연히 농부로 변신하였으며 1885년에는 뽀스레드니끄(중개인이라는 뜻) 출판사를 만들어 러시아 민화와 복음서의 진리를 대중에 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 꾸민 책들을 펴내기 시작했다.

Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой; most appropriately used Liev Tolstoy; commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer.

His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.
