He promised me forever…But she came to take my soul. Huli had dedicated his entire existence to making himself into something worthy of Xiao Dan.
But as he stood on the brink of claiming the vampire’s heart, an evil deal he’d made centuries ago was coming due.
Min wanted Xiao Dan’s soul.
Would he lose Xiao Dan when he confessed his ugly promise? And could he stop Min before it was too late?

i've looked forward to huli and xiao dan's story for agesss this did not disappoint!! i feel like the romance in this book is the most believable bc these guys here pined for centuries and actl spent lots of time together in present and in the flashbacks, so i get the attraction.
imo huli's character is the most distinct out of everyone - i really like his character - he's cute and possessive and is a bit green tea (in a good way i swear!! like he's so sweet to xiao dan but feisty to everyone else hahha). and i also really like his relationship with erik and them playing with their fluffy tails 🥺
min's an okay villain, altho i don't really understand how and she kicked the bucket so fast 👿 she deserved more torture ok???
petition for huli to get an actual name, , and cameos of the vamps in the other books in this universe 🙏
It is definitely bittersweet to come to the end of the Zhang clan's story. Of her three interconnected series set in this world, this one was my favorite.
I was so excited for Huli and Xiao Dan's story! I think it ended up being a cute, shorter book to wrap up the series. The stakes weren't as high as the rest of the series, but it would've been hard to match the fae threat that built over four books.
I'm glad she mentioned this world would continue with more Prince books as well as a wolf pack series!
Cute end to this series - I'm going to miss all of these characters!
I love how dramatic and silly Huli is, but we also get to see how his relationship with Xiao Dan started and also how it progressed over the thousand years with flashbacks to the most memorable moments for them.
Huli and Xiao Dan were different to all of the other couples in the series because they came into it with a pre-existing relationship, they just hadn't taken that final step to become romantic. They know everything about each other and even though they have a few stumbling blocks, they have a really solid relationship.
I'm really hopeful there'll be more books in this story universe in future!
A bit too lovey-dovey, not what I first thought it would be. But Xiao Dan and Huli had been waiting for their own happiness over centuries!!! They deserved it!! So I couldn't grumble much.
Huli was adorable and I loved that sometimes he did feel like younger human, full of mischief and energy (the way Huli was still confused about human traditions, or about relationship WAS joy to read) while Xiao Dan was so kind and wonderful and in love with his fox.
I LOVED that their courtship actually started when Huli was really still a fox (with one tail) OVER A THOUSAND YEARS AGO and that meeting Huli pretty much gave Xiao Dan a will to keep on living.
I loved that we had been given tidbits on why Xiao Dan was so protective over the fox in the previous books, telling his brothers not too hard on him. Those scenes were so precious!
What a wonderful way to finish this series. I wish the Zhang clans happiness as they moved back to their homeland.
I loved it. It was everything I hoped for Huli and Xiao Dan's book. It was beautiful and funny and exciting. I will miss this series dearly but I hope Jocelynn comes back to this universe at some point
A beautifully emotional and satisfying conclusion to the series, delivering everything to conclude the temporary move from China, romance, magic, found family, and just the right amount of chaos.
Huli and Xiao Dan’s love story is both heart-wrenching and deeply romantic, filled with centuries of yearning and an undeniable bond. The slow-burn tension between them finally ignites, and watching their relationship unfold is a rewarding experience. The stakes are high, with Huli’s dark past catching up to him and Min’s sinister intentions threatening everything. The emotional weight of Huli’s secrets adds depth, and the way Xiao Dan confronts it all makes for some truly powerful moments.
Jocelynn Drake's writing is immersive, bringing the rich world of fox spirits, vampires, and supernatural intrigue to life. The family dynamics and playful banter add warmth and humour, balancing out the heavier, more intense moments.
This final instalment is packed with everything I like about this series—angst, passion, magic, and a love story that refuses to be denied, do not miss this epic finale!
A little disappointed in this one. Maybe because it was shorter and the villain didn't hold the same level of a threat as the others in the series. Maybe it was the bouncing between present and past, causing a disruption in the flow. Whatever it was, this one felt a little flat. The appearance of Rafe and Phillipe helped keep the connectivity of the Varik Universe going but the rest of the Zhang clan seemed to make less of an appearance than in the other 4 Kings of Chaos books.
I think Zhang Xiao Dan and Aiden got shorted in their books.
Our sweet sweet Huli and Xiao Dan are finally together! I adored them so much! This was a much shorter book but so wonderful. Funny, sweet, sexy, and a little action to keep things interesting. Absolutely adored! Our clan is finally complete!
To say I've been excited about Huli and Xiao Dan's romance feels like an understatement. All series long, these two have been lurking in the background just waiting for their moment to shine, and the wait was totally worth it. From their very first interaction, Huli changed the course of Xiao Dan's life, bringing new joy and playfulness just when he needed that spark most. The rest of his clan may have been skeptics, but I saw the way Xiao Dan softened any time Huli came bounding up for attention and cuddles. The two of them were endlessly adorable together, and I really enjoyed experiencing all the flashbacks to the early stages of their relationship. Huli was so determined to become worthy of Xiao Dan's love by cultivating his tails, but little did he know he had it all the way back when he was a fluffy two-tailed fox. Xiao Dan only withheld those three little words out of fear that he'd be holding Huli back from his next adventure, which was such a misguided Gege thing to do because there was nowhere Huli wanted to be except with his Xiao Dan. In the present day timeline, it may have felt fast when Huli and Xiao Dan professed their love, but in reality these two were the slowest of the whole group to voice aloud what their hearts had been telling them for centuries. I wanted to spent this whole book in a lazy, decadent exploration of the steamy side of their romance, but the Zhang clan had one last enemy to defeat before they could let down their guards and finally return home. I found it surprisingly easy to get geared up for another fight, and just like in the previous books I loved seeing how their family bonds made them stronger and more united in their mission. I wouldn't say this book had the most dramatic action sequences or most vicious takedown (book 4 was wild, okay), but it was a satisfying revenge journey for Huli and Xiao Dan and I felt they more than earned their sweet happy ending.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
it’s been a fabulous series and a grand finale. One I highly recommend reading
Rating: 4🌈
Two Thousand Promises finishes the Kings of Chaos series with the last of their clan to get their fated mate so they can all finally go back home to China.
Jocelynn Drake’s series has been excellent. From the beginning, the Chinese vampire, the cultural elements, and their history has added a richness and depth to a well developed, and thoughtful fantasy universe. Dragons, elves, witches, and Chinese warrior vampires! What an incredible combination!
And Two Thousand Shadows, the fourth book, gave us and the series a fantastic dramatic ending, full of vivid battle sequences, emotional moments and scenes that tied up major plot lines and character relationships. Realistically, that book was the series finale.
And the clan started to prepare for their journey home, back to China.
That left just the relationship between Xiao Dan and Huli, the fox spirit, unresolved. That’s the storyline of Two Thousand Promises. It’s a sweet addendum to a basically finished series, a group of alternating chapters where we see the progression of their relationship over time.
And a protagonist who has been in Huli’s life but just appears now as a dramatic character.
Huli is a sweet character, Drake captured the essence of a nonhuman who’s in love with a man so well. And Xiao Dan is someone we’ve gotten to know over the series, together , stumbling towards a relationship, it’s a sweet romance.
Honestly, I wish they could have been folded into the other book, Min the villain just doesn’t have the same energy as the rest of the characters.
But it’s been a fabulous series and a grand finale. One I highly recommend reading.
Love the covers, the concept. Fantastic.
The Kings of Chaos : - [x] Two Thousand Dreams #1 - [x] Two Thousand Tears #2 - [x] Two Thousand Blades #3 - [x] Two Thousand Shadows #4 - [x] Two Thousand Promises #5
Two Thousand Promises is the fifth, and final, book in the Kings of Chaos series from Jocelynn Drake. After enjoying the prior books in the series, I was curious to see how this final book would play out. Especially as there have been tantalising glimpses of the characters throughout the series.
Unfortunately, for me, Two Thousand Promises did not work for me in the way I had hoped. For me, the book was far too short and missed the mark. I wanted to be sucked in deep, to feel the emotions between the characters, yet these were never experienced – it was simply told, with flashbacks thrown in that did little to enhance the experience. With how quick this story was, there was not enough time to jump deep into the emotions of the characters, which is what I enjoyed with the prior books. Without it, it made it obvious how many things did not work for me. Such as the way the characters felt extremely juvenile – in behaviour and in speech – despite the fact that these are ancient creatures. Such as the way the bad guy was handled far too easily, making it seem like it was tacked on simply to allow another story to play out. The biggest for me was a pet peeve I have in LGBTQIA+ stories as a whole and have feared throughout this series. My issue is the way the sapphic romance was handled. Rather than being given the depth of feelings that the gay romances have been given, the sapphic romance was brushed over so quickly. It felt awkward and uncomfortable rather than the deep expression of love it should have been. I find this happens far too much in gay romances, and I am disappointed that it also happened here.
All in all, Two Thousand Promises was not the conclusion to the series I had hoped to experience. Many have clearly adored it, highlighting that I am in the minority, but there were too many small things that did not work for me, which is why I was disappointed.
This was a slow burn friends to lovers book seeing as how the 2 MC's knew each other for over a thousand years. Admittedly, one of the MC's was a fox spirit, a hula jin, and the other was human for half of that time. Huli, a fox spirit, has loved Xiao Dan, a vampire, since they first met. At first he is just happy being around Xiao Dan and being talked to and given tasty treats until he meets Min, a evil fox spirit. He is surprised that she is able to speak and change her form from a fox with 5 tails to a woman. She offers to mentor him until he too can speak and change into a human form. However, she makes Huli promise her Xiao Dan's soul. Huli agrees thinking that he will find a way out of the agreement. Thus begins Huli's transformation. He returns regularly to see Xiao Dan and surprises hi with first his ability to speak and then his ability to change in form into a man. Xiao Dan also falls in love with Hula but is too scared to tell him due to fear of ruining their friendship. Huli feels that he is not worthy Xiao Dan and when Min shows up again to take Xiao Dan's soul, Huli fears that Xiao Dan will hate him. The two MC's finally learned to communicate with each other and Huli had to learn to trust in Xiao Dan's love for him and believe that he was worthy of love. It was great to see the whole clan band together to thwart Min and for Xiao Dan to finally have his HEA. This was a wonderful finale to the series.
Two Thousand Promises is a sweet wrap-up to Kings of Chaos series, giving us the final love story within the Zhang clan. The previous book, Two Thousand Shadows, tied up the big conflicts and overarching storyline, so this one shifts the focus to the slow-burn romance between Xiao Dan and Huli.
Huli is full of mischief and boundless energy, and the author does a great job of capturing the playful and sometimes naive essence of a nonhuman being in love. His devotion to Xiao Dan is so pure and unwavering, it’s touching to see how much he means to the vampire who’s spent centuries protecting him. Xiao Dan, on the other hand, remains the steadfast protector, is always mindful of giving Huli the freedom he believes he needs. But little did he know, all Huli ever wanted was to be with him. Their love story spans over a thousand years, and the flashbacks showing how their bond grew make the whole thing more impactful. Now, the back-and-forth timeline may feel a little bit disruptive, but it really helps in showing us just how long these two have been dancing around each other and their feelings. Their final confession might seem sudden, but in reality, it’s been centuries in the making.
That said, there are a few drawbacks. The book is shorter, and the villain Min, doesn’t feel as threatening as previous villains in the series, so the climax doesn’t hit quite as hard. But even with these minor issues, Two Thousand Promises is still a sweet ending to the series. Huli and Xiao Dan’s romance is full of humour and deep emotion, making their love story a fitting way to close things out as the Zhang clan finally prepares to return home to China. The whole series has been a fantastic mix of fantasy, culture, and supernatural action, and while this book is more “low-key”, it still delivers where it counts.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my unbiased review.
Two Thousand Promises is the 5th and last book in the Kings of Chaos series. This is a spin-off from the Lords of Discord series who will feature in cameos. A martial warrior clan operating a school in China two thousand years ago trained warriors for the emperor until the emperor’s dark new advisor arrived, slew most of the clan and turned the rest into vampires. A thousand years later after the clan had banished their evil sire, clan leader Xiao Dan is tired of the burden and decides to meet the sunrise, fatal to vampires. As he sits patiently waiting, a young fox kit approaches him playfully begging. Realizing the kit is actually a huli jing, a fox spirit. Regardless of their reputation, Xiao Dan knows the kit is too young to survive and takes him home. Meeting the sunrise can wait. And so begins their thousand year relationship which turns from friendship to love especially when Huli has studied enough to learn how to shift to human. This story line has been carried through the previous four books and we have all been waiting for them to get their HEA. There is a lot more romance and less action in this book but it was important to the final outcome. I would not be surprised to see another spin-off series down the road and I would certainly welcome it I received an ARC of this book as a paid REAM member of the author.
Huli had worked hard to be worthy of Xiao Dan. He felt to do that he had to gain his nine tails. He accepted help from another, Min. For this help she demanded Xiao Dan’s soul. Huli wanted his tails so much that he agreed, knowing he was going to find a way out of this evil deal. Now Min has come for Xaio Dan’s soul and Huli refuses to give him up. Xiao Dan for his part has fought his attraction for the fox spirit long enough. He wants to claim Huli as his mate but first they need to address Min. Fortunately, the whole family wants in on the plan to eliminate Min.
Told in both the present and flash backs, Xiao Dan and Huli’s story unfolds. These two had been together a long time, but Huli wanted to be worthy of Xiao Dan so much that he accepted the evil deal with Min. Now he wants to keep his Xiao Dan safe and is afraid his deal may ruin his relationship with him. It was incredible to see how the entire family worked to help eliminate the threat. Xiao Dan and Huli knew it was their job but the plan was a joint venture. This was an amazing conclusion to this series. The love between the two was a thing of beauty. You could see how that love grew and matured over time. The good news is that there is a short story available for when you have finished the series. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is the last book in the Kings of Chaos series - I don't want to say goodbye.
In the previous book, all fae issues were solved so book 5 is the story I waited for since the first book - Huli and Xiao Dan. Their story is told in small flashbacks, explaining how their relationship was built and how Huli became Xiao's shadow and annoyed all other vampires.
Huli is just cute, sweet, protective, snarky and sassy, depending with whom he deals. I love how he interacting with the other vampires and mates. He is written in a way that you can visualise him perfectly, especially with all his fluffy nine tails. I want a Huli as a cuddly toy now.
Xiao is again the voice of caution, even if it may cost him what he wants more - Huli. He was always careful not to trap the spirit and didn't realise that this was exactly what Huli wanted - a lifetime with Xiao.
I love how each of the clan and their mates deal with the threat Min poses but especially after she does something really unforgiveable. They may not always loved Huli in the past, they were nervous having a spirit with a general bad reputation among them, but as soon as Huli becomes clan - all caution is off.
I want to see them now all in China, I want Eric growing up and I want more Varik cameos.
I am sad that this series is ending but I am happy that all the Zhang clan members have all found their happily-ever after and that Xiao Dan especially have finally given in to his love for his mate, Huli. They really both deserved it after what each of them have gone through in the thousand or so years that they have known each other and became friends.
But just as they were about to start their life as a couple (finally), an old deal that Huli made centuries before came to collect. Although he promised Xiao Dan's soul to another Huli Jing, he had no intention of allowing that to happen as he had planned to kill the other fox way before he could take his vampire's soul. In truth though, the other fox, Min, never had any intention of getting Xiao Dan's soul, he wanted Huli's power and magic to be hers when she defeats him in a battle.
But of course, Xiao Dan would never allow that, neither would his clan. Huli, as his mate, is now part of his clan, thus they would protect him in every which way they can.
Thank you so much Ms. Jocelynn Drake for this wonderful series, and I will miss all of them so much but I am also looking forward to the next series you will write. Congratulations!
Two Thousand Promises is an amazing conclusion to the wonderful Kings of Chaos series but I am sad that it is over. I have been looking forward to reading Huli and Xiao Dan's story since the first book and I was fully engaged from the first page to the last. It is beautifully written, sweet, funny, emotional, the storyline is great and I love all of the characters. I also love the interactions between Huli and Eric as they are so sweet and hilarious together as well as the misunderstandings between Huli and Xiao Dan as they learn to navigate their new relationship. They are finally ready to get their hard won happily ever after but they have one last obstacle to deal with. Luckily they have the whole family there to help them and I love seeing how well all of the couples from the previous books are doing. The ending is perfect and I can't wait to see what the author has in store fur us next.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
🦊ahhhhhhTwo Thousand Promises was completely and utterly precious!! Top notch vibes, great storytelling, a badass villain, and Huli was my most special darling and i loved him to pieces. I also really really loved how Huli and Xiao Dan had shared centuries of feelings and emotional intimacy before they finally got their loving-on in this book. I loved the build up and i thought the spice was sooo worth the wait!!💗
🌸💮JD's writing was light and flowed really well, and read like a watercolour painting at times. The pacing was great and i felt like this was the perfect length for the story that unfolded, even though i could have read a thousand pages more of this enchanting beauty.💮🌸
💗Loved absolutely everything about Two Thousand Promises and i'm really looking forward to rereading this series -and catching up on the ones i've missed- because it was really beautiful and sweet to imagine and i loved Huli and Xiao Dan's perfect ending so much!🦊
This fifth book in the series has Huli fighting for his love and his mate with another huli who helped him over the centuries learn to speak and shift and get his nine tails. She’s now come to claim his debt to her, his mate’s soul. Of course Huli can’t allow that to happen.
The book moves kind of slowly and jumps back and forth in time from when they first met in China in 963 to current time 2023. It traces the development of their relationship and brings us to today when they express their love for each other.
The book culminates in the final battle and in the clan now being complete and ready to travel back to China. It’s kind of an anticlimactic ending. A couple of the Variks make a cameo appearance and I kind of expected a big farewell scene with the Variks and the other witches from Moon’s coven but alas.
But I am ready to see what comes next from this author.
Xiao Dan and Huli story concludes this amazing series with an endearing and sweet story that developed during time. They had many challenges along the way, as well as different enemies that they had to take care of. It was bittersweet seeing their progress, especially when they were apart for long periods of time or when they were still uncertain about their worth and capability of loving and being loved. They were cute together, and their little differences caused by miscommunication were a little endearing, but a big role in resolving them had the loving family that helped in seeing and understanding the reasons behind the actions. Loved seeing old characters and the help they offered in their time of need, as well as their shenanigans. I really enjoyed the story and I’m looking forward to the next adventure in this universe.
OMG. What an amazing conclusion to this series. This is book 5 and must be read in order to understand the characters and overlaying arc. The story starts in China, where Xian Dan is sitting in the orchard wondering if he should step on the sun or not. When all of a sudden a young fox comes in his area. With the fox jumping around, Xian Dan offers him some food. He is so enchanted with him and realizes that he is a huli jing. As the years go by, you get to see how both of them interact. As you know with the other books, Huli follows the Zhang clan to Connecticut. This is the start of the story with how they worked together to get rid of the threat to Huli and working to become mates. I really hope the author decides to continue with a short story with their trip back to China. Great world building, heat and chemistry between them. Cannot wait to read more from this author.
So, cheers that Xiao Dan and Huli finally got their story shared, but sobs because this was the final book of the Zhang Dynasty. I have loved this series. I didn't think the author could create another series equal to The Lords of Discord, but she did. The characters and world-building of this series were phenomenal, the struggles compelling, and the brotherhood and love wonderful. This last book has a little less drams and angst that the others (IMO), but it was no less satisfying. So glad to read about this wonderful and well-deserved romance that was centuries in the making. I sincerely hope the author comes up with another spin-off. I would love to see the Zhangs and Variks again, along with new friends. If not, I am sure I will reread these two wonderful series again.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
A love story a millennia in the making. This final book in the Kings of Chaos series is just the perfect ending. The fae have been vanquished and their maker has been destroyed. There is nothing stopping Xiao Dan from having Huli and everything he's alway wanted. It's time to go home. But, centuries ago, Huli made a promise and it's time to pay. The story moves between the current time and Xiao Dan's past encounters with Huli, every meeting bitter sweet. This is the most emotional of all the series in my opinion. The brave warrior who puts the needs of others before himself and the huli jin who doesn't believe he's good enough. When they finally get to be together there are sweet, tender moments, but others that made me laugh out loud. It's difficult to love a fox spirit, but so worth it and Huli still has a lot to learn about humans, but I just know they're going to make it
Finally, we get Xiao Dan and Hulis' story .... and it is as sweet as promised
They have known each other for 1000 years and finally they make a move. I melted while reading their first encounter .... so sweet. I loved Hulis dedication to Xiao Dan and to prove that he is worthy of the vampire. Although Xiao Dan is nearly perfect, Huli was my favourite in this story He and Eric together .... so sweet
The storyline was well done ... the only thing missing their move to China, or maybe we get another story for that. One can hope. Chen also proves why he is second in command And here we see all of them together, and I loved their dynamic .
The love story a thousand years in the making. It was so amazing to get not only the back story of Huli and Xiao Dan but what was going on in thier heads. Honestly, both of the surprised me. Of course, I wanted them to be together, there was too much teasing not to want that but it was hard to understand their connection through the eyes of other characters. Huli has always been a fun character but it was wonderful seeing him become a part of the clan. And Xiao Dan has always been the caretaker, so it was nice to see him go after something for himself. An amazing wrap to this season.
I am so sad that this series is ending. I have truly enjoyed getting to know this vampire clan. It all ended in the beautiful love story of Huli and Xiao Dan. I loved the intertwining of their past with the current drama that they face, getting to know how their love came to be and getting to see them fight to keep that love. Huli's mischievous curious nature is the perfect match for Xiao Dan's seriousness. I will be sad to let this clan go but I loved getting to know all of their interesting and quirky mates.
