It’s extremely inconvenient to fall for your bloodsworn enemy…
Yilan is a Fetch, a skilled female assassin and spy. As the powerful Nephilim sweep across the continent, slaughtering and conquering every nation in their wake, she is tasked with killing their legendary General, Melek Handras.
When Yilan infiltrates the Nephilim camp and allows herself to be captured by these violent creatures, she is brought face to face with her very large, very compelling target.
Melek is uneasy when the female Fetch so quickly surrenders her secrets in exchange for her life. But then the King makes him personally responsible for ensuring she does not escape.
Forced to keep the clever, deadly woman close, he quickly becomes familiar with her scathing humor, and cutting insight. He is forced to admit that Yilan is a woman capable of handling herself, even in his ruthless world… the kind of woman he finds disturbingly desirable.
But war does not wait. Soon, Melek must return to the battlefield to lead his warriors against her people—leaving Yilan in the hands of his brutal comrades who are hungry for nothing more than victory over an enemy.
Especially a very pretty one.

So let us begin in a tent at an army encampment…and then let us stay in a tent. Sometimes it’s the nice tent. And other times it’s the naughty tent. And then let’s imagine nothing but happens for like 400 pages except chit chats about god and politics and rape. And then everybody gets the zoomies and we end up in luxury castle jail with big boi angel and his lil shadow babe. I imagine it looks like Gulliver and the people of Lilliput if Gulliver had wings and the Lilliput ladies wanted to jump his sizable bones. So yeah, 2.5 ⭐️s.
This one at least had a lot of promise, but I enjoyed them being enemies better than i enjoyed their lovers era. It turned into incessant spice in between arguments about how she thinks he needs to lead a rebellion to depose the king.
And while I don’t disagree with that, and it’s obvious he’s holding something back, his no reason given refusal to do so was wearisome.
But Yilan’s jaw just tightened. “I didn’t wait to tell them about our bond because it was faked. I waited because it’s real. And because the moment I acknowledge you, you become our King. And hear me, Melek: Mate or not… I will not hand my Kingdom to a coward.”
Lordy.

The King Has Fallen delivers an original, twist-filled spicy tale that captivates despite its flaws. Melek, general of the Nephilim army, serves a vile king, while Yilan, a captured Shadekin assassin, forms a surprising bond with Melek’s cognitively disabled adopted son. Dark themes, including SA, make for an intense but rewarding read.
The story excels in its fresh take on popular tropes like enemies to lovers, found family, and the brooding male lead, but basic editing errors and shallow character development hold it back. Despite these issues, the gripping plot and emotional tension make it a standout recommendation for dark fantasy readers.
This book had such a strong start—clever, snarky, and led by a compelling female protagonist. But then it went from 0 to 60 way too fast, stripping away all the tension and slow-build atmosphere that make a love story feel immersive and real. Instead of drawing me in, it rushed right past the good stuff. DNF at 57%.
Yilin is a “Fetch” - an assassin, spy, shadow. As the kingdom of the Nephilim (Fallen Angels) sweep over the continent dominating, conquering, and destroying everything in their wake Yilin is tasked to infiltrate their enemy camp and assassinate their most feared general/warrior, Malek. She feigns surrender and is taken to their evil king, who charges Malek with the task of interrogating and squeezing every bit of information he can get from her.
Malek doesn’t trust the captivating Fetch - he knows what their kind can do…infiltrate and manipulate minds, and he is certain she is a spy. He keeps her caged, denies her food and water, but nothing breaks her, and she is open with sharing strategy and combat maneuvers with him. Day by day he becomes more bewildered and besotted by the beautiful Yilin.
During the course of her imprisonment Yilin and Malek make a shocking discovery - they are soul bound/mates. It seems impossible. They are enemies, how could God have given them to one another. But the bond is impossible to ignore and both succumb to it. When Malek is called to battle he is terrified for his mates life. He knows the ruthless evil king will take her and breed her, and he makes her promise to escape. Yilin for her part keeps trying to get Malek to understand that he should not be loyal to an evil king, and that HE is the only one worthy of being king.
When Yilin realizes that Malek will not listen, she takes drastic measures. She does indeed escape…but she takes Malek with her. Now the tables have turned and Malek is the “prisoner” with Yilin revealing powerful secrets that change their lives forever.
**THOUGHTS/SPOILERS**
This is masterful storytelling. Yilin and Malek are fantastic characters and are so richly described that you can truly “feel” what they are both going through. The world building is fascinating and fantastical, and it’s such an interesting take on the fallen angel lore. All the secondary characters are fleshed out well, and developed, and the action, adventure and romance are all perfectly balanced. As the reader I was entranced from the very first page to the last, and couldn’t wait to read the follow up book - which is just as great! I only wish that book three continued with Yilin and Malek and didn’t switch to a new pair, especially since there were still so many unanswered questions regarding Lucifer who was after Yilin to mate and breed her. But even that “loose end” couldn’t detract from the spellbinding tale of enemies turned lovers. This is a must read for lovers of paranormal and fantasy romance readers!!
This book started with so much potential but ultimately didn’t live up to its promise. The FMC is introduced as a skilled, fearless warrior assigned to assassinate the MMC, but instead spends most of the time either cowering or attempting to manipulate him. Her character lacks the strength I expected, and her actions feel inconsistent with what was promised.
As for the MMC, he's supposed to be the dominant, accomplished leader of the Nephilim army, yet he doesn’t seem to have control over his own troops, who constantly pose a threat to the FMC while under his care. The dynamic between the characters felt off, with very little development in the first 50% of the book. The supposed enemies-to-allies relationship didn’t feel believable, and I couldn't sense any real sexual tension between the FMC and MMC. When things did progress, it was abrupt and came across as forced.
The plot also suffers from unnecessary drama. A lot of the narrative revolves around Gall, the MMC's mentally challenged adopted son, who seems to be used more as a plot device than a well-developed character. His role feels exploitative—he's there to showcase how "fabulous" and caring the FMC is, but it doesn’t feel authentic. The author also over-explains the characters' motivations and actions, resulting in a lot of tedious, repetitive narrative that feels both boring and condescending.
By the time I reached 77%, I just couldn’t take it anymore. The repetitive nature of the interactions and lack of character growth left me uninterested and frustrated. I simply don’t care about these characters anymore, and unfortunately, it's time to step away from this one.
I’m DNF’ing 48% in. I don’t really see the point in reading anymore. The characters don’t really make sense in accordance to the original narrative. The main character is described (and set up) as a skilled assassin and spy, but after she “let’s” herself get captured there are many instances that prove the author *cannot* write an actual female warrior. I haven’t finished the novel, but I can’t stand poorly written female warriors. Even though this is just a random series in the grand scheme of things, I just feel like promising a strong, physically competent, female character and then not delivering does women a disservice as a whole.
(Alsoooooooo, the MMC kinda gave old man energy.)
I didn’t realize this was a Christian fantasy until now (face palm ik). This is the second Christian fantasy I’ve read accidentally (smh), but honestly this one is just on me not paying attention lol. I probably should’ve figured it out with all of the “soulless” condemnation. Just thought I might clarify that for other people who may have missed it too.
5 🌟 for The King Has Fallen, So Much More Than Just Enemies-to-Lovers!
I was immediately swept away into this fantasy world! Melek is loyal, fierce, and unapologetic; not a ‘golden retriever’ hero necessarily, more like a Doberman. Yilan is disciplined, calculated, and witty. This leads to many tests of wills between the two and banter that is just fun:
“So, you Fetch eat your males alive, do you? Presumably after the mating otherwise they’re no use to you at all.” “One could argue they never were,” she said dryly’. 😂
I can’t wait to read the next book to find out if the Nephilim could ever be redeemable as a people, but I need to know how Melek and Yilan’s relationship will grow and how they will reconcile their love with their cultural differences and opposing goals to satisfy their sense of duty and commitment to their own people and families.
Enemies. Intrigue. So much deception. I loved it. I love the Enemies to Lovers trope, there's always the rationale that there's begrudging respect before the mushy gushy affection. And I loved that these two maintained their own personal values and beliefs despite falling in love, a lot of times one character will give up their own conviction for the love interest before any conflict is truly resolved. Melek and Yilan are so perfectly match in ambition and stubborn determination. I can't wait for the sequel!!!!
I really enjoyed this book! One of my favorite things was the titled chapters and some even had a Spotify link to a song for that chapter which absolutely elevated the reading experience. It was made so easy to just click the link at the start of the chapter. Some absolutely lovable, wholesome side characters. The author even answered a couple of my questions on TikTok where I learned I could get the first seven chapters of the next book to help with my dislike of cliffhangers. Patiently waiting for book 2 now.
This book started so well and I was hooked but that ended around 35%. I felt like not a lot happened and there wasn’t enough explanation on why we were here! It’s clear the author was hiding things but I just stopped being gripped by Yilan and Melek. It’s shame because I think the world building had a lot of potential but the book dragged for too long in the same place.
I picked this up because of the author, but will keep going because the story is so engaging. There are so many Easter Eggs to catch to set up who the players are. Some I caught and some I missed. I also was ready to start laughing by the end because everything seems to get postponed by an hour whenever someone asks. Not 30 minutes or 2 hours but just an hour. 😀
I agree with the other reviews. This isn't the most perfectly written book (but it's also not horribly written) but the story itself is very good. I loved both of the main characters and all of the the little twists. I also liked the magic and the idea of the fallen angels and then the Fetch. It's a very creative story. I can't wait to read book 2.
Gall captured my heart 🥹 I have a son with special needs and was pleasantly surprised when his character was introduced. This is the first time I’ve seen that in a fantasy book♥️. I always enjoy a good enemies to lovers trope. I feel like I predicted some of the bigger twists but regardless it kept my attention and I had fun reading it the whole time:)
I honestly love this so far. My biggest issue is there are lots of grammatical errors, so her editor did her dirty. But the story is 🤌🏼, the slowish burn is 🤌🏼, the enemies to lovers is 🤌🏼. *small spoiler below*
Maybe just don’t say “mate” so much lol. We get it. They’re mated. They don’t have to say MY MATE, MY MATE every other sentence now.
Solid 4.5 ⭐️ but I rounded up because this book took me my surprise and ended up being so much more layered than I anticipated after reading the first chapter. Seriously, all the emotions for this one. Will absolutely look up all other books by this author now.
Trigger warning: I'm sorry to say I DNF at 60 percent. It starts off great, witty with laugh out loud moments. Fun characters with straight out enemy vibes but to be frank, nothing happens in it. Well nothing that doesn't involve sexual assault of the MFC. It became far to much.
82% read but couldn’t go further. I couldn’t stomach a hero so purposefully blind. And thus condoning horrible things. Nope, he’s as bad as the rest. It just got to be too frustrating and I wanted him to die by the end.
Took some time to get into this book but once that the characters were set and the plot thickened. Then the book became very unexpected and was full of surprising twists and turns. I’m excited to see where Ms Lynn takes us next.
I saw a short clip of this book from the author on social media and immediately started reading. So happy I picked up this book I loved the story and it was glued to my fingers I could not stop reading. Off to book 2
