Oh that RASCAL. Ok, I read “Greyson Gray Camp Legend” by B.C. Tweedt, which I gave 3-1/2 stars. Now I have just “finished” “Greyson Gray Fair Game”, book two in the series. As I was reading, parts were fun, but I was thinking, “Nah, I can stop with this one.” Not so fast. In this one, our fearless now-13-year-old is at the Iowa State Fair, and once again embroiled in trying to stop a far alt-right terrorist plot. End of book two? CLIFFHANGER. Even though I wasn’t exactly excited about this one, I’m going to have to read the next one.
Parts of this made me laugh right out loud. Parts of this made me snort in derision. SPOILER ALERT, except that this spoiler is in the Prologue, so not too bad. Can you picture 4 kids, one a killer, on top of a fast moving U-Haul truck swerving about in pouring rain and ANYONE staying on top of the vehicle, rivet-grasping or no? And, as they’re fighting on top of said U-Haul, can you picture stated 13-year-old pausing to admire his girlfriend’s beautiful blonde hair streaming behind her? I. Don’t. Think. So.
The first book I thought, “OK this is a pretty good plot, if you’re willing to suspend a boatload of disbelief. 3-1/2 stars for me, probably 4-5 stars for a middle grade (male) student.” As I was reading this one, it was SO violent, with SO much far-alt-right-evil machinations, and occasional fuzzy theology that I thought, “No, I don’t think I’d recommend this for a mid-grade boy.”
But sigh, I have to see now what happens next. I hope he doesn’t do this to me AGAIN after book three. 3 stars for laugh out loud stuff.
