Second-chance romance and serious pining? Absolutely my weakness.
Watching Cade work to earn Dani’s trust again after six years apart was so satisfying, especially because he never expected her to simply forget how badly he hurt her. Their chemistry was still there, but the history between them gave every little step forward more weight.
Cade definitely tested my patience at times, but his devotion to Dani and willingness to show up for her won me over. Dani was just as important to their story because she didn’t immediately drop her guard. I liked watching them rebuild their friendship, rediscover their attraction, and slowly figure out whether they could create something healthier this time around. The horse-training storyline was such a nice addition too, and I loved how naturally it brought them closer.
The ranch setting and family dynamics added plenty of warmth, while Cade’s journey through grief gave the romance more emotional depth. A few parts moved a little more slowly than I would have preferred, but overall, the pacing suited the gradual reconciliation.
Between the yearning, cowboy charm, and emotional payoff, this was a really enjoyable second-chance romance.

I really wanted to LOVE this book but Cade made it really difficult. I really like Dani and feel so much for her but Cade...he just made me mad!!

This was a very sweet, second chance romance. Cade and Dani have been apart for 6 years after a very devastating breakup. Both have continued to pine for one another but there are so many hard feelings from the past.
I loved seeing Cade and Dani reestablish their friendship over time. When they finally do take the leap, it is just so satisfying. I am not going to lie, there are many moments where you will be so frustrated with Cade and his inability to communicate his feelings.
I promise, be patient with him and it will pay off. I appreciate that she decided to stand her ground when he can’t get his head out of his arse.

Can Cade get his second chance? He had made plenty of mistakes in his life, many involving Dani. The biggest being breaking up with her while grieving his mother’s death.
Their story is a journey of healing and realizing what they had lost. She has returned to town and needs his help with training her horse. With this comes a little drama, but it is all part of healing. The family makes for some fun side stories.
A new to me author, and I am excited to read more of this series.

I’ve been looking for another spicy cowboy romance to sink into, so… hello Cade and Dani! 🤠 And hello to a brand-new series from J.S. Wood! I’m not going to lie, that cover sucked me right in. Add a Colorado ranch setting, second-chance romance, and two people finding their way back to each other, and I was ready to settle in.
Here’s the setup: Cade and Dani have history—and unfinished business. When their paths cross again in the Colorado ranch world, old feelings come rushing back along with plenty of chemistry. But second chances aren’t always simple, especially when the past, family, and everything happening around the ranch threaten to complicate their happily ever after.
I loved the ranch setting, and I’m pretty sure Colorado is a new book location for me, which was a fun change! And the tropes? YES. I’m a sucker for second-chance romance, especially when it’s about true love finding its way back to each other. ❤️
But… I struggled to get deeply invested in this one. There were A LOT of characters introduced, and I’m guessing many of them are being set up for future books in the series, but I could not keep track of everyone. 😂 More than anything, the story felt a little surface-level for me. I wasn’t deeply invested in Cade and Dani or their situation, and I actually found myself wondering if they should end up together. Please don’t revoke my HEA card. 😂
But I will say, one quote in particular stopped me:
“Sometimes one side of the partnership has to be the bearer of the strength. Take turns carrying each other and it’ll work out.”
Honestly? What great advice. ❤️
Overall, this was a sweet, easy-to-binge cowboy romance, but unfortunately it just didn’t quite give me the emotional connection I was looking for. 2.5 stars for me, and while I’m glad I gave it a try, I don’t think this is a series I’ll continue.

Second chance romances are a favorite and I have to say I think CT (Cade) is one of the hardest working MMCs when it comes to winning Dani's heart back. It has been six years since he crushed both of their hearts and while he never thought he would get a second chance with her when the opportunity presents itself...he is all in to win her heart back.
Dani is skeptical of CT at first. She trusted him with her heart and soul once before and doesn't know if she can again. She tries to hold out and stay strong but her heart wants what it wants and that is Cade. As they spend more and more time together at his ranch it becomes inevitable that she cannot resist him. She still has a lingering fear and soon that fear starts to become a reality.
Cade loves Dani with all he has but there is still tragedy from his past that he has not gotten over and it soon surfaces forcing him to take a deep long look at himself and figure out who he wants to be. I love how the author has this issue just slightly below the surface throughout the book until it comes to light. Yes, I wanted to shake him and tell him to wake the heck up but what the author did had to happen in order for the ending that she gives readers. She gives readers amble examples of how far Cade will go to protect Dani (really nothing he wouldn't do for her).
This was my first JS Wood book but I thoroughly enjoyed her writing. She has many side characters in this book that are involved in a good percentage of the story and I loved meeting them and cannot wait for more of them. I am ready to jump into her backlist as quickly as I can while waiting for the next book to release.

Cade PINING after Dani to try and win her back after she comes back into his life; realizing that for the past 6 years he’s been missing out on the love of his life? It’s a yes for me!! 😜
Dani and Cade dated for several years until CT’s mom passed away and he broke up with her with no real explanation.. He was definitely dealing with some internal grieving, but now that she’s back in need of his help, he’s realizing that his feelings are still there, and making it known that he wants her back. 🤭
My man CT was very persistent but not in an “annoying” way, ya know what I mean? Probably not.. but oh well 🤣 He even stated he was gonna continue to ask her out until he got a definite NO but she never did say no; until she said yes…
I love the main characters of this book and their development from going to a young couple in love, to strangers for years, back to friends and lovers again.. 🫶🏽🥹 it was something truly special! I feel like the book was very well pasted, and nothing was rushed. Sometimes in my opinion with second chance romances, they will hop back into their relationship and admit their feelings again with no pining or yearning! That was not the case here!! CT worked to win Dani back, and when he did!! Whoaaaa 🥵❤️🔥

Six years later, Dani is forced to turn to Cade for help training her troubled horse, bringing them back into each other’s lives and reopening feelings neither of them truly left behind.
Considering my own marriage is a second-chance romance after a six-year gap, there was probably never much of a chance that I wouldn’t love this book. This was charming, emotional, and thoughtful in its portrayal of grief and relationships. The loss of a parent is something that stays with you, and I thought Wood did a beautiful job showing how grief can walk alongside you every day. Moving forward doesn’t mean the pain simply disappears.
I think some readers may question Cade’s choices toward the end, but I actually found them to be a profound depiction of how complicated strong relationships can be. Sometimes one partner has to carry a little more than the other, and a relationship isn’t always perfectly balanced, and that’s okay!
Dani’s emotional maturity made her such a wonderful FMC, and I enjoyed watching her navigate what life threw at her.

Book 1 in the Three Rivers Trevors Ranch Series, On The Fence by J.S Wood is a compelling and amazing read.
This small town, second chance romance is a must read for all who love forced proximity, soul mates and a horse trainer.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.

Such a sweet second-chance romance! Cade and Dani’s six-year separation left plenty of unresolved feelings, and I loved watching them slowly find their way back to each other.
Cade definitely tested my patience with his communication skills 😂, but it was so worth it. And Dani standing her ground? Loved it!

I started reading this and couldn't stop. Before I knew it, it was 245 AM and I was 60% in. I was able to read through it so quickly because it flowed so well! These two characters were perfect for each other despite their differences. Their relationship has its growing pains and struggles but they were both willing to compromise.
Cade was a man who didn't put up with anything that wasn't good towards the ones he loved and he made true on those promises. Not just other people but himself and what he said he wanted out of life.
Dani had sooo much to give to those around her and she was busting at the seams to do just that. But with her circumstances she wasn't able to fully launch what she wanted to do. But she was willing to make it happen if it meant she had to leave the ones she loved behind.
Cade really was a good guy, but he just didn't deal with trauma well. Most people don't, let's be honest. BUT he let it continue to build until it couldn't anymore. I don't think it should have taken things to happen for him to just abandon the one he loves to be able to deal with things.

I'm obsessed with cowboy romances, so I was really expecting to love this one. Especially after reading that prologue. Good lord that thing tore my heart out. But I don't know. I'm like 20% in, and I'm just not loving it. You mean to tell me that they've been living in the same small town after she moved back, but he doesn't know anything about her and hasn't at all tried to reach out to her? And he just let everyone think that she was the one who dumped him during his mother's death? I also just didn't love the tip toeing the author did around what kind of sickness his mother had. I'm obsessed with cowboy romances, so I was really expecting to love this one. Especially after reading that prologue. Good lord that thing tore my heart out. But I don't know. I'm like 20% in, and I'm just not loving it. You mean to tell me that they've been living in the same small town after she moved back, but he doesn't know anything about her and hasn't at all tried to reach out to her? And he just let everyone think that she was the one who dumped him during his mother's death? I also just didn't love the tip toeing the author did around what kind of sickness his mother had. Each chapter ended in a similar way on a “cliffhanger” or monologue of the character coming to a revelation and it slightly annoyed me. The male main character CT broke up in high school with Dani for not having the emotional bandwidth because of grief after his mother died. It was a breakup conflict that lasted multiple times as the characters tried for a second chance romance and was kind of tiring to keep going through. I’m still not convinced both characters should be with each other. I learned a bit about horses and ranching and showing from the story, which was nice that the horse piece wasn’t just a plot device.

Seeing Dani again has made him realize just how far down he's pushed his feelings for her in the years since he pushed her away. He knows she's not here for him, only for her horse. But he has a second chance staring him the face, and he's not letting her go again. He'll need to do more than work on her horse, though, if he wants Dani to trust he's the man she deserves.
Cade and Dani's second chance is not without its obstacles, but all the pain they went through both in the past and in the present, was worth it when they finally got to their happy ever after. Dani made Cade work for her heart this time around, not giving in easily, and forcing him to finally realize he had to work on his serious issues left over from the death of his mother. I may have wanted to scream at him more than once, especially near the end, when he let those issues hurt Dani (and himself), but I also wanted to give him a big hug. Grief isn't something that's easy to get over, and Cade had not stopped grieving, nor had he even dealt with that grief. Thank God his first love came back into his life and helped him get to the point where he could do something about that grief. Dani is amazing, strong enough to reach out for help from the person who broke her heart, and not crumble. This is a heartfelt second chance love story. I can't wait for more of this series now.

I have such a soft spot for second-chance romances, and On the Fence delivered exactly what I love most about the trope: heartbreak, regret, longing, healing, and a hero who actually has to work for his happy ending.
From the very beginning, I was invested in Cade and Dani. Their story starts long after their breakup, but the history between them is woven into every interaction. You can feel the weight of what they lost, which made every small step toward rebuilding their relationship feel meaningful.
Dani has spent six years trying to move forward after Cade broke her heart. She left town, built a career for herself, and focused on creating the life she always wanted. When circumstances force her back home and back into Cade's orbit, she's determined not to make the same mistake twice. What I loved about her was that she never lost her sense of self. Even though she still loved Cade, she didn't immediately forget the pain he'd caused. She protected her heart while still allowing herself to be open to the possibility of something more.
Cade, on the other hand, completely won me over.
He's not perfect. In fact, a lot of the story exists because of a terrible decision he made years earlier. But what made his character work for me was that his mistakes felt real. He wasn't a villain. He was a man drowning in grief after losing his mother and making choices from a place of fear rather than honesty. That doesn't excuse what happened, but it made him feel human.
And when he gets his second chance?
This man puts in the work.
One of my favorite things about the book was how persistent he was without ever becoming pushy. He knows he hurt Dani. He knows trust isn't rebuilt overnight. So instead of expecting forgiveness, he consistently shows up for her. Again and again. Through actions rather than just words. Watching him slowly prove that he's not the same man who walked away years ago was incredibly satisfying.
The horse-training storyline added such a unique layer to the story. The time Cade and Dani spend working together creates the perfect opportunity for their walls to slowly come down. It also gives the romance breathing room. Their relationship doesn't magically fix itself overnight. Instead, they gradually rediscover the friendship, trust, and chemistry that once made them inseparable.
And the chemistry?
Still very much there.
Even after years apart, every interaction carries that underlying tension of unfinished business. The longing between them felt authentic, and there were several moments where I found myself rooting for them to stop fighting their feelings and just be honest with each other already.
I also loved the small-town setting. It creates that cozy atmosphere where everyone knows everyone, family is always involved in your business, and avoiding your ex is practically impossible. The Trevors family added plenty of humor and warmth throughout the story, and some of the side characters have me genuinely excited for future books in the series.
One thing I particularly appreciated was that the book didn't shy away from showing the impact grief can have on relationships. Cade's inability to process his loss becomes the catalyst for so much of what follows, and seeing him finally confront those emotions was one of the strongest parts of the story.
The pacing worked really well for a second-chance romance. There was enough angst to make their reconciliation feel earned, but not so much that it became frustrating. The emotional push and pull felt realistic, and I never questioned why either character was struggling with the situation.
Dani's relationship with her horse also added an extra emotional layer to the story. It wasn't just a subplot; it became another reflection of healing, trust, and rebuilding after setbacks, which mirrored the romance beautifully.
What stood out most, though, was how much both characters grew. This wasn't a story about simply falling back into old patterns. It was about becoming better versions of themselves and creating a healthier relationship than the one they had before.
By the end, I was completely invested in their future and already looking forward to spending more time in this world.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is the first book of the author's that I've read and I don't mind reading more from them. The book's blurb gives you an idea of what to expect, though be aware the book deals with grief and mentions animal abuse/drugging of animals. It's a goodfirst person dual pov romance about finding love again after heartbreak.
After their break up, Dani continued on her dream of getting her license to practice equine therapy and still competed in showing in reining. When trouble with her horse leaves her no option but to ask Cade, her ex, for help, she's not sure if she can be around him. She never got over him and the pain of their break up is still there. However, she wants to do what is best for her horse and can't resist the mutually beneficial deal that Cade presents her. Being around him scares her to open up her heart to him again but she loves him too much not to give him another chance. What I liked about Dani was that, although she loved Cade, she protected herself and made Cade prove his feelings for her. She didn't make things difficult for him out of spite but for both of them to know that they truly wanted to be together and be there for each other.
Although Cade never stopped loving Dani, his fear overwhelmed him and made him push her away. Since then, he's been a shadow of who he used to be. When he learns that he could help her with her horse, he doesn't hesitate to offer his assistance. He understands Dani's reluctance to be near him and it only makes him regret the decision he made years ago. As they continue working together, he is determined to let her know how sorry he is and that his feelings for her never went away. Being reunited with her also gives him that push that he needed to return to competing in showing. But, although he is happy with being reunited again and having another chance to be together, he can't stop the same fears he had from lingering. While readers may not like how Cade handled things, I could understand his grief and fear taking control. He never properly dealt with those feelings so his actions made sense, even if they weren't always likable for readers. &, once he did get himself together, I liked how active he was in proving to Dani that he wanted a life with her.
Being a second chance romance, this had the perfect amount of angst and longing. You could feel Cade's fears and regrets as well as Dani's hurt and wistfulness. The pacing of the story was done well so that their reconciliation didn't feel too fast, even though it was easy for them to fall back into how they were before. There was spice but not too much to overshadow anything else. Aside from their feelings about reconciling, there was other conflict in the story that was interesting, though I did feel as if it was conveniently resolved. I also liked the competing in showing storyline and not difficult to follow. Apart from the romance, I liked the relationships that they had with their families. Overall, I enjoyed this book and think others will too.

I’ve read a few books by J. S. Wood, and On the Fence reminded me exactly why I enjoy her writing. This was a raw, tender, and quietly gut-wrenching second-chance romance about grief, fear, forgiveness; and one emotionally skittish cowboy who desperately needed someone to knock some sense into him.
Dani once dreamed of becoming an equine therapist. Instead, life took her in a different direction, and she now works part-time at a bakery while carrying the remains of a future that never happened. She and CT had been together for years. They were supposed to grow old together, get married, and build their lives around the ranch. Then CT lost his mother and, drowning in grief, walked away from Dani too.
Six years later, Dani needs help with a horse that has suddenly become skittish and CT sees his opportunity to come back into her life. Unfortunately for him, Dani has neither forgotten nor forgiven the way he broke her heart.
And honestly? Good for her.
The emotional heart of this story lies in watching two people who have grown and matured confront the pain they never properly dealt with. Their connection is still there: messy, magnetic, tender, and charged with all the things left unsaid. Dani insists they’re only working together. CT has decided he’s winning her back. The tension practically saddles itself.
CT frustrated me beyond belief at times. He loves deeply, but the moment someone he cares about is hurt or becomes ill, fear takes over and sends him running. His reactions were painfully human and, as an empath, I understood where they came from; even while wanting to throw my Kindle at the wall, climb directly into the book, and knock some sense into his stubborn cowboy brain. JESUS. MEN.
But that vulnerability is also what made the story feel so honest. This isn’t simply about rekindling an old romance; it’s about whether love can survive grief, abandonment, and the terrifying possibility of loss. It’s humbling and sad, yet ultimately soft and hopeful. CT and Dani don’t return to the people they used to be: they have to decide whether the people they’ve become can build something new.
I also loved the ranch atmosphere, the equine storyline, and the way the horse’s fear subtly mirrors the characters’ emotional wounds. The story arc was strong, although some of the descriptive passages felt a little long for my taste. I would have happily traded a few of them for more dialogue, especially with chemistry this good.
Overall, On the Fence delivered a heartfelt blend of aching history, forced proximity, cowboy stubbornness, and second-chance yearning. Sexy, emotional, and tender in all the right places, it’s a strong beginning to the Three Rivers Trevors Ranch series; and perfect for readers ready to enter their cowboy era.

This is a delightful second chance romance set in a cattle ranch setting with a working cow and reining theme.
Overall it is a great, easy read with engaging characters, a good storyline and great pacing.
Cade’s ongoing trauma following his mum’s death is dealt with in a sympathetic manner and although his behaviour towards Dani is frustrating at times you can see where it stems from.
Although Dani’s heart was broken she has a very caring, forgiving nature. I really liked the scenes where she was working with Graham for therapy.
I did have a slight issue with the book swapping between tense a bit which was off putting and made my reading stutter somewhat but I think that was more to do with the authors voice than an error: ‘Bottle Grounds IS loud tonight’ then next sentence ‘The dance floor WAS filled’.
There are some open door spicy scenes as the MCs relationship progresses but these are tastefully done and not overly explicit.
I read an ebook version of this book, with a delightful illustrated cover and good editing. This book releases on September 4th 2026.

This was the first book in the Three River Trevor Ranch series! This story was super cute and I finished it in one day. Super easy read and the perfect palate cleanser!
Cade and Dani have been dating since they were young teenagers. Cade’s mom passes away after a lengthy fight with cancer. Right before his mom passes away, Cade feels the need to protect himself and despite the love he has for her, he ends their relationship. Fast forward 6 years, Cade is a rancher and small town horse trainer and Dani has moved back to their hometown after being let go from her job. Dani needs help getting her horse ready to show and Cade is the only one who can help her. Dani is focused on maintaining a professional relationship but Cade has other plans.
Cade is surly, closed off, and a shell of his former self since his mom died. He threw himself into maintaining his family’s ranch. Cade also stopped training and showing horses. Cade lacks the ability to communicate and denies there is anything wrong. When the only woman he has ever loved comes back into his life, Cade will stop at nothing to win her back. Cade is persistent, but not aggressive in his pursuit of Dani and is determined to show her that he can change.
Dani is a sweet, small town girl stuck in love with her ex-boyfriend. Dani needs help with her horse and after extensive searching, discovers there is no one but Cade left to help her. Despite Cade’s persistence, Dani is determined to guard herself and her heart.

This book was a SOBBING fest from the prologue right to “the end” as it starts with the terrible breakup and the angst does not loosen up at all. Second chance romance is my kryptonite because the romantic somewhere in me believes that love finds a way and I will shamelessly rooted for Cade and Dani. They were high school sweethearts with the purest love ever wrote grief broke Cade and they went their separate ways but once they were back working together the sparks were reigniting like crazy. The love they held for each other during the six years apart proves them meant to be, and the fact that they’re now willing to fight through obstacles to be together is it truest proof of love ever. Cade is your typical protective cowboy who’s also insanely whipped and willing to beg to get her back. Dani is so much stronger than me cause I would’ve caved so fast, but that girl is strong and knows her worth. I love how she fought for him but understands that she can’t help him if he can’t himself and does right by herself every time. As much as I loved this book I am not the biggest fan of the third act breakup because of the lack of communication on Cades part. But I do have an extremely soft spot for him because grief does terrible things to people and I love how he sought help and went to therapy so he could let go of his fears and fully love and commit to her. However because I have a soft spot for broken boys and second chance romances I cried a whole lot and swooned at the little “grovelling” he did at the end. I really enjoyed this (or I guess being emotionally destroyed by this) and I give it a 4.5/5

Second chance romance and a persistent cowboy who has spent six years regretting letting the love of his life go? Yeah, I was ready for this!
Dani and Cade (CT) were once supposed to have forever. But after losing his mom, Cade let grief and fear take over and pushed Dani away without giving her the explanation she deserved. Six years later, Dani is back in his life and when she needs help retraining her horse, Cade finally gets the second chance he never thought he’d have! And this man was going to WORK for it and did.
One of my favorite things about On the Fence was that Dani didn’t immediately fall back into Cade’s arms. She still loved him, but she remembered exactly how badly he’d broken her heart and made him prove that things could be different this time. Meanwhile, Cade was persistent without feeling overly pushy, showing up again and again and making it VERY clear that he wanted her back!
I also loved how naturally their relationship rebuilt itself while they worked together with Dani’s horse. We get the friendship, trust and chemistry slowly returning alongside all that unresolved tension from six years apart. Add in ranch life, horse training, close family dynamics and a small town atmosphere, and this had so many elements that I love in a cowboy romance!
And the side characters?! I’m already ready to get more of this family because I have a feeling I’m going to LOVE spending more time at Three Rivers Trevors Ranch! This is my second read by and she’s definitely on my “read every release” list now!

I love me a good cowboy romance. Give me the setting, the characters, some form of cowboy sport, and I’m always down for a good time. Add in a second-chance romance, and I’m even more sold. I love getting to see two people when they’re young, watching them grow and heal separately, and then seeing them find their way back to each other.
One of my favorite parts of this book was how knowledgeable the author was about the world she was writing about. You can tell this is a background she genuinely knows, and that made everything feel much more authentic. I now know more about horses than I ever expected to, and I love finishing a book feeling like I learned something along the way.
My biggest complaint is that not every romance needs a third-act breakup. I actually understood this one more than most, and I appreciated that it took real time and effort for them to finally come together permanently, but it’s still just not my favorite trope.
I also struggled with the sheer number of characters and backstories being introduced. I understand that authors often do this to set up future books, but there were so many people that I started having trouble keeping everyone straight. A lot of it didn’t feel necessary to this particular story and, if anything, occasionally pulled me out of it.
Overall, though, I really enjoyed this one. It took me a little while to fully get into it, but once it grabbed me, I flew through the rest. I’d definitely be interested in reading more from this author and I certainly won’t say no to spending a little more time in the cowboy world.

This was such a cute and enjoyable second-chance romance, and I had the best time reading it! I was rooting for Cade and Dani to reconcile from the very beginning. I absolutely loved the family dynamics throughout the story, too! They were adorable and added so much warmth and charm to the small-town setting. There’s just something about a close-knit family, a little bit of chaos, and a cowboy romance that works so well. 🤎
And then there’s Tommy… 🙄 Let's just say this man is an asshole, and I really hope he gets what's coming to him. The way he was treating the horses had me absolutely furious, and I was definitely rooting for some consequences. 😤🐴
My only feedback is that I wish some of the chapters had more seamless transitions between them. A few felt a little abrupt, but it didn't take away from how much I enjoyed the overall story.
If you're looking for a small-town romance with cowboy vibes, second chances, family, redemption, and a couple worth rooting for, definitely add this one to your TBR! 🤠❤️

This book completely got me in my feelings. 🥹🩷 I loved Dani and Cade’s story so much, especially because there was so much history between them. You could really feel how much they had loved each other and how deeply the breakup had affected both of them.
What I loved most was watching them find their way back to each other, soulmates. There were so many moments where I could feel the hurt, the hesitation, the longing, and all those things they were trying so hard not to say out loud. Their emotions were so real, and I honestly found myself getting invested in every little interaction between them.
Dani was someone I could connected with. She was hurt, guarded, and understandably scared to let Cade back in. And Cade I had so many feelings about him. 😅 Watching him deal with his regrets and finally confront the choices he had made his side of the story hit differently.
I also really enjoyed the horses being in such an important part of the story. It wasn’t just a background detail it connected the characters, their lives, and even their healing in a way I really appreciated.

Oh my gosh. This book checked every single box! I grew up on a ranch and could just feel all that was happening here. Watching all the cowboys and cowgirls practice roping and training their horses while sitting up on the fence and then running and helping brush down the horses when the day was done. It's so easy to fall in love again with that when you read this book.
Cade/CT traumatically loses his mother at a young age and pushes everyone away.
