Rate this book
There are many ways to disappear.

Ellie, a spirited 69-year-old, finds solace in her active life on the road alongside her best friend, Ruth, who is nearing 90 but still possesses a zest for life that belies her age. As Ruth makes the difficult decision to trade in her beloved camper for a cozy home in an RV community, Ellie must confront the poignant changes that come with the passage of time.

The old friends can’t bring themselves to quit their mutual adventures entirely, but when they join together for one more trip in Ellie’s A-frame camper, things begin to go wrong.

In this gripping tale of disappearances, told with humor, nostalgia, and unexpected revelations, Ellie Dwyer's Disappearing Act takes readers on a heartfelt exploration of friendship, the realities of aging, and the audacious spirit of two women determined to embrace life—no matter how many unexpected twists it throws their way.

If you’ve read the books in this series you know that Ellie Dwyer has been traveling with a friend she met along the way. They each traveled in a different style camping trailer as they took in the sights together esp. hiking, kayaking, outdoor sports and getting involved in senior activities. Her friend is now in her 90’s and has decided to sell her trailer and towing vehicle and move to a tiny home in AZ where they have senior activities which are too easy for that senior.
After a visit to her “retired” friend, Ellie returns to the Montana mountains only to discover that her friend misses the mountain hiking and will be joining her in a week.
They take a troubled teen with them on a mountain hike but the teen runs away with an older man, getting in trouble as he uses her in a crime spree across the states. Life gets complicated for all involved with a series of misadventures but eventually, true to form, the dynamic duo make sure all ends well.
This book is easy reading, true to form with today’s seniors and problematic teens but highlights that the two groups can often resolve issues working together!

The latest in Ellie and Ruth's outdoor adventures. Just when you think what else could happen...something does and as usual the 2 main characters are involved.
I really like this series and have grown attached to Ellie and Ruth. There is a huge tease at the end as to where their adventures might go next.

As an RV owner and a senior woman I really enjoy the Ellie Dwyer series but there is so much more to these books than camping. I love the special friendship between Ruth and Ellie. Toward the end of book 6 it was apparent that Ruth felt at almost 90 she needed to slow down a little. I was afraid this book would be all Ellie and I would miss their fun adventures together. I was not disappointed there was so much adventure with the two of them. The book had some serious and scary events but it definitely was loaded with love and humor. No spoilers but when Ellie got herself in a situation I needed a tissue for tears of laughter! I also enjoy the little references to music and things from their younger days that I certainly catch! Great book!

I have enjoyed all of the Ellie Dwyer books. This one is one of Diane Winger’s best in the series, in my opinion. The books are an easy read, but always with a social message, or sometimes several. This book gave the reader lots to think about, from child predators to abusive relationships to treating lower socioeconomic people in a respectful way. Ruth and Ellie have such a great friendship and have bonded so much over the years and they are able to discuss things in a way that the reader would most likely discuss with their best friend. I just love these two women and their adventures with the people they meet along the way.

I'm a big fan of this series! I was excited to have the opportunity to be an advanced reader. I loved it; this is my favorite of the series. The descriptions of the places they visited made me yearn to travel and see all the places Ellie and Ruth went. I laughed and also used a few Kleenex at some of the scenarios. The characters are so real, the dialog always flows easily and it all reads more like a nonfiction story than fiction. I highly recommend this book and this series.

Sixty something Ellie and her eighty something friend Ruth spend their time together at various campgrounds and on hiking trails. They greatly enjoy their friendship, so Ellie is a bit upset when Ruth informs her that she's going to stop traveling around pulling a trailer and instead set up more permanent housing. She will still travel around and hike with Ellie, but Ruth no longer feels up to all of the travel. Before Ellie leaves for her next hiking destination, the two friends go on a trip together where they plan some hikes. At the campground, they befriend a family. The father is rude and belligerent, and it turns out he's the teenaged daughter's stepfather. Ellie and Ruth offer to take the girl on a hike with them one day to get her away from the hostile environment. During the hike, the girl disappears. Of course, the two women feel terribly guilty as the frantic mother tries to find out what happened to her daughter.

I hadn't read any of the previous books in this series, so maybe I just wasn't familiar enough with the characters to find the story endearing. A lot of random things happened that didn't have anything to do with the story (quite a lot involved trying to find somewhere to go to the bathroom). For instance, the book starts with the two women possibly witnessing a robbery?? But maybe not? It was very odd and then nothing more came of it. Not a lot happened but if you like to read about camping and hiking, this will probably be to your tastes. I was expecting more of a plot, but it was quite a meandering storyline that didn't really end up anywhere in particular.

I received a copy of this book from a GoodReads giveaway.

Disappointed

WOW!!! I have really loved and enjoyed Ellie and Ruth's adventures until book 7. The story was pretty good until the end. Then as they were thinking about the next adventure, suddenly it was just The End. This book, IMO had absolutely nothing to do with the title except for one small part where Ellie got herself in a jam for about 36 hours. So it really didn't make much sense the way the other books in the series did. This one was mostly all about a teenage girl running away with a predator she thought she was in love with and who loved her, then getting away from him and the emotional trauma it caused her. I just can't believe this book had such a sudden and shoot I can't even find a word to describe the ending properly. I was looking forward to more talk about their future adventures leading into the next book. Now I'm wondering if this is the end of this series.

I have enjoyed every book in the Ellie Dwyer Series. Ellie's Disappearing Act does not disappoint. While Ellie and Ruth are both seniors their experiences and relationships are a great read for any age. The inclusion of the teenage Reba adds another exciting layer to this story and is an appealing aspect for younger readers. The elements of mystery throughout kept me page turning. The friendship between these two women is timeless and inspiring. The detailed descriptions of the scenery on their hikes is well done and makes me want to get out there and hike too ! I loved the ending and truly hope it is a set up for Ellie and Ruth's next adventure.

If you are a senior woman who loves the outdoors, especially hiking and camping, this series is for you. The author’s wonderfully descriptive style will help you leave your daily life and its concerns behind as you join Ellie and Rose in their adventures. I’ve come to think of Ellie and Rose as friends and am always eager to learn the latest in their lives. And let me say, I will never again use a trailhead outhouse without remembering Ellie’s terrifying experience. This book was worth reading just for that episode. I highly recommend this book, and am just sorry I will now have a wait ahead of me before I can learn about my friends’ next adventure.

It was book one of the Ellie Dwyer series that started me on my adventures in my second act of life and continues to inspire me to get out and see this world. Diane and her husband are adventurous and Diane makes sure the description of the scenery is vivid and inspiring. She adds social lessons with the interactions of her characters and real emotions to pull you in and make you feel part of it all. Each book brings tears and laughter and allows you to be a part of the friendship between these two women.

Another Great Adventure

I love Ellie and Ruth and their camping adventures.
This book took a turn as Ellie and Ruth take different paths this year.
They still manage to be together and take a young teenager under their wing and help her heal from a harrowing few weeks.
I do t want to give too much away, but like all of Diane Winger’s books about Ellie and Ruth, it came to an end much too quickly.

The best in the series!

Absolutely love the Ellie Dwyer books and #7 is, in my opinion, the best in the series so far. A lot happens in this book. I am a little confused about the last page. It states Ellie and Ruth settle into chairs on Ruth's patio and they're talking. But then it says "by the time we end the call" . So...are they on the patio talking or are they on the phone? Lol

Another great read

I enjoyed this book so much that I'm tempted to start hiking! I was disappointed when I saw "The End". Watching the characters age and their friendship continue to grow makes me reflect on my friends and how important they are to me.
Great twists and believable dialogue had me hooked from the first chapter.
Come on Diane, I know the overseas trip will be fascinating. Waiting on the next book!

Ellie D where's Disappearing Act

I so enjoyed this book. It's engaging, adventures and you won't be able to put it down. There is never a dull moment, its full on to the next hike, destination and good meet up with friends. There are moments of duress, and Ellie's bathroom rescue. I hope you find this helpful and check out Ellie and Ruth's adventures, I promise you will be hooked. Enjoy.

This is the best book in the series. It's a continuation of the lives of two friends, that have different challenges affecting their lives. Growing older, Ruth decides she can't live the life of a full time RVer. Ellie has to adapt to traveling and camping alone. In a campground there are always memorable people. Some of them can have a lasting effect on your life...

Wonderful series

I fell in love with the warmth and sincerity of Ellie and Ruths friendship. These books took me to places I have never been. I enjoyed the fact that the ladies were always up for an adventure. Albeit encouragement from Ruth. I also enjoy when a sweet pet is given human characteristics.

I'm addicted!

I can't wait to read the next adventure of Ruth and Ellie. They have me wanting to pack my bags and start traveling in an RV. I love the sisterhood and non stop adventures with each book. You can visualize each character clearly and you're traveling with them on their hiking excursions. I'm addicted...!

Great story!

This one was a bit different from the other books in this series but what a great story it was! At 69 and way overweight I marvel at these two women even if it is just a story!

Not nearly as good at the first 6. There were several grammar/usage errors that distracted from the story. I DO enjoy reading about Ellie and her adventures though!
