4.5 stars 🌟 THIS WAS PERFECT!!!!!!! it was like greys anatomy but better 🩺🥼🌮 laineysam were so fucking cute and i absolutely adored the progression of their relationship 🥹 sam was such a yearner and i loved how obsessed he was with lainey 💝 this couple was super sweet and i am beyond excited for the rest of the series to come out this year!

**Lainey and Sam, Sam and Lainey—what a pair!** This romance was unlike anything I've ever come across before. It was truly refreshing. While I’m not usually drawn to medical romance (and, no, I’ve never seen *Grey’s Anatomy*—don’t hold it against me), this story had just the right balance. There wasn’t an overwhelming amount of medical jargon, which made it easy for me to dive in and enjoy the story immensely.
I’m also excited to see that a side character will be getting their own story next—count me in! I’ll definitely be looking for more from this author.

I had so much fun reading this! It’s a page turner that doesn't take itself too seriously.
Even though you know where the story is headed, it’s still a fun ride because the writing is so lighthearted and evocative. I never thought a romance that develops at a gym and a coffee shop would interest me, or that a character described as “oatmeal” could become so lovable, but it’s a testament to the writing!

Daughter of a famous surgeon mother, Lainey Carmichael has been summarily dismissed from assisting in a cardiothoracic procedure she’d been anxiously awaiting. It doesn’t help that a) the doctor who called it off was right or b) that he’s annoyingly well respected and just plain hot.
Brilliant surgeon Sam Reese has been very into Lainey since he first interacted with her: impressed by her brain as well as her looks. Being her superior however means it’s a no go until her residency is completed. She’s often deeply unhappy with his decisions and isn’t afraid to let him know about it.
When Lainey shows up at his brothers’ gym she sees Sam in a different light, and begins to question how she feels about him after all.
Lots of confusion and dancing around the subject follows.
Will they get their HFN? Or will the pressure keep them apart?
This would probably make a decent hallmark romcom, although it’s heavily sprinkled with Grey’s Anatomy storylines and character sketches which, as a fan of the show, the derivative nature of it all didn’t sit right with me. I give it 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

This book is ADORABLE and was the perfect palate cleanser from all the heavy and dark romances I've been reading lately. Sam has been in love with Lainey for YEARS. When that tidbit slips out on accident, Lainey starts rethinking everything she thinks she knows about him. The only problem is that he's technically her boss, and she's still healing from past heartbreak.

Quiet and observant, Sam is used to being told that he’s boring and people thinking that he’s not anyone special. That’s definitely not the case. Inspired, he becomes a great surgeon with a knack for teaching others. One of those, Lainey.

Started the new year with a great book. This story was absolutely great, I love how both main characters are so smart, humble, and loved by everyone around them.
Lainey is a fellow doctor on route to getting a job as attending doctor and Reese is a surgeon who's been secretly in love with her since he met her. I cannot tell you how much I adore when he falls first or when a hero is longing for his girl. But Sam was specially adorable because he is patient, kind, and never pressures or rushes Lainey to meet his timeline. He is also a dirty talker but does not even know it (always the quiet ones!). Lainey is skittish because she was burned on the past by her ex and her supposed best friend, but as the story progresses, she cannot avoid opening her heart to new friendships and a new romance with the kind doctor. These two were perfect for each other and Reese always knew it, he's just happy Lainey is finally catching up.
I can't believe this is a debut story, I was sure I would dive into a whole collection of books by this author. Good job, lady <3

This was so soo adorable. Big, strong, quiet dependable Sam and the Super confident Lainey.
I loved how comfortable they were in their relationship and how they came to depend on each other, but.....
I HATED the third act conflict. I already saw it coming and it just felt very cheap and unnecessary to me.
I was also irritated by Katie and Nate. There was absolutely no justification for what they did, and Lainey deserved to hold a grudge against them forever if she wanted to.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and will be looking forward to more books in this series.

For the record, I am not usually a contemporary romance reader, but this fell into my lap and I wanted to give it a try. Oh my gosh, I loved it! It was an easy and entertaining read with fun and relatable characters. If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, but want something a little more lighthearted (pun intended) this is your book!!!

And I am gonna tell you this once (and everytime you ask for a book recomendation in the future), you NEED this book.
You need to experience this. You need to experience the magic this book brings to life and this AMAZING writing style.
And most importantly, you need to meet Samuel Reece, and Lainey Carmichael, and - literally every single character in this book.
It's save to say I am in love. With the storyline, the characters and the book as a whole.

It took me a couple of chapters to really get into Hearts on the Table, but once I was in—I was in. I flew through the rest and ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting!
Sam completely stole my heart. I loved their dynamic so much, especially the workplace chemistry—it was fun, flirty, and had me smiling the whole time. The back-and-forth between the characters was just perfect and made the story such a joy to read!

This cute story explores the "non relationship" between two surgeons. She has a strict rule against dating coworkers while he has secretly been pining for her for years. Honestly, she has always thought of him as boring or not though about him at all. She only wants to finish her residency to become an attending at her dream hospital; she is not there to make friends. He is a step above her as he is already an attending physician. He is content with watching from afar but that will not stop his daydreams of a future with her.
The hospital's board is changing policies left and right, and one of the first changes is within the HR department. All couples must report their relationships or end them immediately. That had never been a problem for Lainey (our FMC) before, but then she begins to realize that her superior is actually kind of hot. And while she does want to pummel him at their local gym, she can't stop thinking about him. His golden retriever heart is over the dang moon when she actively spends her time with him. But with her rule and the hospital's shadow in the back of their minds, they propose a trial run relationship. A situation that would allow them to be together without breaking any rules and especially without getting into trouble before her residency is over.
This is a relatable story in terms of emotional responses. While I do not know anything in regards to medical terminology or the stress that first responders feel, we can all relate to keeping our emotions close to our hearts or not wanting to stir the pot. We all know what it is like to pine after someone or blabber in their presence. We also know what it feels like to say things in anger or in fear. These two characters complimented each other and I appreciate that they had repeated stops within their relationship; things were not just magically fixed.
I actually wish there had been more medical jargon or patient interaction within this story. I fully understand the frustration with board members dictating every move or competition amongst fellow employees. Our MMC's reason for joining the medical field was to save lives, but we never had patient/doctor interactions. I also wish there had been some expanded explanations of the medical abbreviations that were used. Like with Ali Hazelwood's writings, I just glossed over certain phrases and believed that they were important surgeries or diagnoses.
As stated above, if you enjoy Ali Hazelwood's portrayals of women in STEM, this is a good book to pursue. There are some moments that feel disjointed or could have had a better polish before publication, but this book will warm your heart. It will also burn your cheeks because he may be a quiet man in conversation, but he goes feral in the bedroom.

Doctor Lainey Carmichael is a talented cardiologist and has one focus in mind: finishing her prestigious fellowship and landing her dream job. With so much to do there’s no time for a relationship. Let alone with a member of the hiring committee. Doctor Sam Reese had been in love with Lainey since he first saw her, but he’s been too shy to make a move. When he unexpectedly makes a confession in front of Lainey, she begins to see him in a new light. As the pair get to know each other better sparks fly, but will Lainey finally put her heart on the line?
I really enjoyed this novel. Both characters were likable, and I found myself rooting for them. Lainey was really hurt in the past. Her ex boyfriend cheated on her with her ex best friend. In order to leave the past behind she moved to Chicago and got a fellowship opportunity where she has thrived for the past three years. While she had interactions with Sam, his shyness made it easy for her to overlook him, until the depth of his interest in her is revealed. Lainey has a lot of hang ups on relationships, both romantic and platonic ones, but I appreciated how she tried to put herself outside of her comfort zone. I love that Ms. Fisher didn’t write her as a closed, cold woman. Did she have her guard up yes, but she was still warm and kind to colleagues. Sam was really respectful of the boundaries she placed and accepted her as she is.
It was wonderful to see how each character bettered the other. Their growth as individuals and as a couple was a wonderful journey to go on. Lainey was able to move beyond her past hurt and create a new life with friends and family. While she never forgives her ex and ex best friend, she lets go of the hold they have over her. Ms. Fisher handled that subplot in a very real way.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.

A forbidden romance blossoms between two cardiothoracic surgeons. Lainey, a dedicated surgeon, has no time for a relationship since her last one nearly devastated her, costing her both a boyfriend and a best friend. She is just weeks away from finishing her fellowship and hopes to be hired as an attending surgeon at the hospital. Despite the questionable circumstances surrounding her entry into the program, she has proven herself capable, and she's determined to let nothing stand in her way. On the other hand, Sam has always been quiet and contemplative, never asking for what he needs. He is a surgeon who enjoys mentoring the residents and fellows in the program and is set to be named Director soon. However, he never imagined that his hidden feelings for a particular fellow would be uncovered and, surprisingly, reciprocated, even if only in secret. But what will happen when a joyous moment threatens to destroy everything they have both worked for, and their evolving relationship is revealed? Can they overcome past hurts and embrace a new dream together?
I truly enjoyed this well-written book about a forbidden romance in a hospital setting. The characters shared a strong rapport, even if Sam was initially perceived as somewhat dull. These two opposites, in terms of upbringing and personality, complemented each other beautifully, illustrating what a loving relationship can look like. My only issue with the book was that it started a bit slowly for my taste, and I would have loved to witness all the couple pairings revealed in the epilogue. Whenever a book is really bad I always have so many words to explain it, but when it rocks my socks off its harder to explain. Can I squeal in delight?
Lainey is the daughter of a famous surgeon and she is on her way to being one as well. When her bf and her bff hook up she runs away to Cedar Hospital to do her residency. She could do that because her mom could pull strings. Thing is she chose there because it was her bf's dream hospital. I guess she thought she was ruining that, but they just waited two years and followed.
Well now she was stuck. That sends her to the gym to kick box off some aggression. Her attending surgeon Sam Reese is there. Thing of that is, this gym belongs to Reese's brothers. And turns out Sam has been crazy about Lainey since he laid eyes on her. Girl, that is the stuff dreams are made of.
After some conversations they decide to predate. They can't date officially yet because he is her boss, but soon that will be over.
And the sex between these two? So fun, so passionate. I loved him not believing that he called her baby during sex. It was so funny having her repeat him every time he did it.
And how much he worships her? Gives her the space he thinks she needs, and then grovels and doesn't give up on them? Honestly in real life that not give up bit might be weird, but this is all pretend. Loved it!
And when she went in for her interview and everything just fell into place instantly for her. I mean, I knew where she was going to end up, but reading her realized it is where the joy is.
And the epilogue and extra epilogue, well I don't think Julia Fisher qualified it like that but 3 years later is an epilogue. Anyway, adorable. absolutely perfect.

And the sex between these two? So fun, so passionate. I loved him not believing that he called her baby during sex. It was so funny having her repeat him every time he did it.
And how much he worships her? Gives her the space he thinks she needs, and then grovels and doesn't give up on them? Honestly in real life that not give up bit might be weird, but this is all pretend. Loved it!
And when she went in for her interview and everything just fell into place instantly for her. I mean, I knew where she was going to end up, but reading her realized it is where the joy is.
And the epilogue and extra epilogue, well I don't think Julia Fisher qualified it like that but 3 years later is an epilogue. Anyway, adorable. absolutely perfect.
Are all her books this good? I must find out!

I wouldn't have realized I was reading Grey's Anatomy fan fiction if they hadn't mentioned Grey's Anatomy more than a few times. It was a little odd to start from the FMC Lainey's point of view when the MMC Sam had been obsessed with her for so long, it was a tad creepy. I really did not enjoy how she kept getting in her own way, but the book summary told me that would happen so I don't know what I was hoping for. I was really hoping the villains in the story would get more of a comeuppance. I wanted to see careers burned to the ground. I understand this is the start of the series, so we have a big of a world building with side characters but sometimes it felt a little shoe-horned in. I am hoping Tess and Will get books later. I am interested to see what we learn about Rija because apparently she is the next book.
For the spicy side, I enjoyed the comedic black out moment thrown in after we switched the POV. I guess, people do lose their minds a bit in the moment. Once the spice got spicing, which was slower than I like it was a good read. I enjoyed the epilogue jump that held a more believable timeline than most romance novels.

Dr Lainey Carmichael is the daughter of a renowned cardiologist. She is working at her dream hospital doing the work she loves. Her boss is Dr. Samuel Reese, sometimes called oatmeal because he seems so boring. He has noticed Lainey since the day they worked together. It had been 2 years since he has had a crush, and she finds out when his brother shares that information by mistake. Lainey notices how patient and helpful Sam is and begins to see him in a different light. The hospital has a policy of not dating each other so they decide to take on a trial dating until she finishes her program. Her best friend and her boyfriend ended up together and became pregnant when they were in medical school, so she has a lot of trust issues. I loved this book. Lainey’s life with parents as famous doctors who divorced left her traveling a lot and never making friends. I loved the contrast between her rich upbringing but no love in her family and Sam’s poor family in which he assumed the role of taking care of his mother and brothers. It was interesting as they worked through relationship issues. Wonderful characters and great story.

This book is honestly perfect! Before it was published I saw Hannah Bonam-Young talking about how good it was so of course I preordered it straightaway!! And it took me a second to get here…but it was WORTH THE WAIT! It has everything that makes for a fantastic story! Workplace romance, doctors falling in love, a man who is SO DOWN BAD, a woman finally finding her people!! It reminded me of Grey’s Anatomy (like the first five seasons, when it was good though) in the best way!! I loved this book so much!!
I loved Lainey and Sam SO MUCH. They’re fun and flirty and also SO good at their jobs. Their relationship was complex, but also so very simple!! They worked together and then one day she REALLY noticed him, and then his brother spilled the beans about his feelings…and the rest was history!! They so seamlessly fit together. Lainey really struggled to connect with people, her past really messed her up…but the way Sam worked so hard to fit her into his life with his family was SO beautiful!
There’s a novella for Rija, and I’ll be reading it as soon as possible!! And I cannot wait for whatever is next from Julia!!

What a fun and unexpected read about having expectations that aren't met...and are then over-exceeded when viewed through a different prism of (un)timely confessions.
High-flying doctor Lainey Carmichael is on the cusp of greatness. Sort of. The only pain in her arse is her attending doctor who is as bland as oatmeal and utterly lacking in any personality and who she's happy to ignore, until an accidental meet at a gym which turns everything on its head.
There's so much I was delighted with in the story: mostly the mature take on adult relationships despite past trauma, the characters' ability to reflect that outpaces impulsivity and, well, Doctor Sam Reese--the quiet, non-Alpha but ultra-competent doctor (with a dirty underside) who is so unlike the heaving, all-guns-firing male protagonists that the romance genre is wrapped around.
The only thing I wasn't too thrilled about was the 'customary' friction towards the end as if it really was creating drama for drama's sake; otherwise, this would have been quite perfect for a rather gloomy start to the year.

Wow! This book was everything I was looking for in a medical rom com. As a big fan of Grey’s Anatomy I love the hospital romance, very fun and not something I get to read very often. Now, onto the characters, Lainey is such a great character and I adore how dedicated she is with her work especially with her background and upbringing. She is probably one of my favourite types of characters, the FMC who’s scared to get close to people around her and ends up falling for the most wonderful man and making amazing friends. Sam on the other hand, another one of my favourite types of characters, he very quiet and observant and absolutely obsessed with Lainey. He is also a complete cinnamon roll and takes care of everyone around him, especially his family. These two hit a few rough patches along the way but the way Sam supports Lainey and gives her everything she needs is so sweet and I’m so glad that they found their way in the end because I adore them. I’m so happy with how this book ended and I’ll admit I definitely shed a few tears while reading it.

I could really use about 100 more pages of Lainey and Sam, I was seriously not ready for their story to end!
I really loved Lainey and Sam’s connection with each other. It felt like Lainey grew so much, like she needed a jarring moment to knock her out of her pattern, and an accidental feelings confession from “a bowl of oatmeal” really did it. You could see Lainey find her own stride and Sam was just there for every step, ready to support. Lainey had a lot of past hurts to work through, but I loved that she recognized when she wasn’t at her best.
Sam was quiet, steady, and observant. Non intrusive but present. I feel like sometimes an MMC written to be quiet can fall flat, but Sam had real dimension. Lainey and Sam also had cute banter, the writing was witty and fun.
This was also so fun because you get meddling siblings and friends, and a great found family vibe.
I will absolutely read the next book Julia puts out!

I am surprised that I enjoyed this as much as I did! This is a debut author that I'll keep an eye on for future works.
This was a nice read about adults mostly behaving like adults. I enjoyed there was occasional silliness while also having the MCs (and side characters) be competent adults. Oftentimes, there will be an absurd situation or a sidekick that is there only for comic relief and this book skipped that nonsense. Not that I don't enjoy a ridiculous book now and then, but this book stayed in its lane and did not try to use a tone that made no sense here and I appreciate it. This book had some funny moments, certainly, they just weren't OTT and fit the narrative well.
The MMC was adorable in his love for the FMC and she had great growth and development throughout. As far as the actual writing, there were a few continuity errors in scenes that took me out of the story and disrupted my reading flow a few times.

Excellent novel! Loved both Sam and Lainey, and loved how their relationship developed in lockstep with Lainey's finding her footing in her career and all the new people she finally allowed into her life. Sam was an amazing MMC and every woman's dream -- calm and thoughtful in the streets, hot and passionate in the sheets! The writing was very strong, the story well paced, the banter snappy and hilarious, and the voices of the two POV characters quite distinct. The author gave Sam and Lainey deep interiority and raw vulnerability that made it impossible not to love them even when they were infuriating (*cough* Lainey *cough*). Lainey's nemeses (both personal and professional) added to the narrative, and Sam's family and friends were colorful and unfailingly loyal. The spice was hot and full of emotion. Great book overall, written with skill and care, layered in both plot and characterization. Highly recommended.

This is the perfect book for any fan of Grey's Anatomy or similar drama. The story is told via dual POV, so the reader understands both Lainey and Sam's backgrounds, growth and feelings and gets involved in seeing their "forbidden" relationship develop. The book flows well, all of the characters are well developed and the dialog and text conversations are witty and fun. There were characters to like and to dislike and the pages kept turning as I was anxious to see what would happen next. I also enjoyed watching both of their characters' growth and their development as a couple. This was the first book by a new-to-me author, but I am looking forward to reading more from her - Enjoy!

This started out really well, especially because I adore MMCs that have yearned for the FMC from a far for a long time..which is what Sam has done for the past three years he has worked with Lainey. This man was obsessed with her the moment he met her, like he told all about her to his friends and family. I also really enjoyed how oblivious Lainey was to his attraction, especially because it was written that Lainey never really paid much attention to others, much less her mentor, at work. The way she started to notice all the quiet and subtle ways he showed her attraction to her was so cute and funny! I overall really enjoyed both of them together. My only criticism would be that I wish we saw more of Lainey yearning for Sam and their low-key flirting. It kind of felt like Sam had been in love with her for three years, while Lainey suddenly developed a crush on him just a day after realizing he existed.
