Whoooo this was a wild ride!! First of all, thankyou NetGalley !!!

Six death row convicts⚰️. One island🏝️. The one last standing gets to go home and be free⛓️‍💥.

Hunger games meets criminal minds in the best way possible!! It truly felt like I was reading the plot of a twisty and turny criminal minds episode (minus the BAU) en I was all here for it. Jep.

This was sm fun, fast paced, a lot of plottwists and I was just shook every other chapter.

Min points for the writing, cuz I felt it were a lot of short sentences that didn’t cohere very well (if you know what I mean) but I can look past that cuz the plot was literally sm fun! Also wished we would have gotten a little more info and lore before these people were thrown in these games in like chapter two.

A woman named Brooklyn Winters, who is facing execution for murder, is offered a chance to win her freedom by participating in a survival game on a remote island with five other convicts. The last person standing will be granted freedom. Brooklyn must decide whether to risk it all in the brutal competition or face her impending execution.

Wow, this book is a thrilling combination of Hunger Games and Predator, set on a remote island where only one can survive. The plot is well-thought-out, with intriguing characters that add depth to the story.

This is the second book I've read by this author, and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. I found myself enjoying this book even more than the last one. The author's unique writing style truly sets this book apart.

The characters in this story are complex, with secrets, lies, and a shared experience on death row. As you uncover the backgrounds of each inmate, you begin to question the harshness of their punishment. Some still hold onto their moral compass, while others have lost their way.

The multiple points of view in the story provide a comprehensive understanding of both past and present events. The flashbacks offer crucial information about each convict, adding layers to the narrative.

The island setting is chilling and eerie, reminiscent of a survival show. Reading this book made me feel like I needed to brush up on my survival skills!

If you enjoy dark, bone-chilling tales set on a secluded island with dangerous prisoners on the loose, this book is for you. The unpredictable plot will keep you guessing, and the story will continue to evolve as you delve deeper into its pages. This book will challenge you to consider what you would do in a similar situation.

Thank you, Red Raven Publishing, for the digital ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Wow, Shade Owen really knows how to grip you in suspense! This was an awesome read! It was fun, survival informative, thrilling and shocking!! I don't know if I would've chosen to stay on death row and meet my fate as is or try the "game." Although I'll never be imprisoned thankfully so I won't have to ever be faced with a decision like that. Phew! It was pretty cool the various tidbits of information I got about surviving outdoors in the wilderness. I usually enjoy stories regarding survival. This was a fantastic book and I was engrossed in it all the way from start to finish!

What a great book! I just couldn't put it down. The story was mesmerizing and the characters were phenomenal. Twists and turns throughout will keep your heart pumping. This is how thrillers are supposed to be written. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and publishers for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

I absolutely loved this book! I really enjoyed how the point of view alternated between different characters. Being able to see the character “anonymous” thoughts gave me chills. They were a very dark character with morbid thoughts and actions. I especially enjoyed getting to see the characters going from feeling hopeless and not knowing if they had what it took to survive to getting the strength to fight back.

The moments where the evil characters were trusted had me wishing I could somehow communicate to the good characters that they needed to run! That final page left me shocked! I was not expecting that!

Minus 1 star I felt like it was easy to predict who the evil characters were from the beginning.

My favorite characters:
- Brooklyn
- Eddy

Thank you so much to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This ended up being a pretty quick read. Overall, I enjoyed it.

The story line was quite engaging and steadily gained pace as the book went on. There were a couple twists I didn’t fully see coming and it was definitely intriguing and entertaining.

The place where it lost stars for me was the writing. At times the characters were just spelling things out for you- not even in a telling not showing way but too concise of thoughts. Like if the character would’ve expressed the same sentiments in multiple lines instead of just one…
I am a big fan of dual POV’s, however, it didn’t feel like Eddy and Brooklyn had their own voices, rather one voice (the authors) seemed to come from both of them. They would conveniently have a lot of the same thoughts and fit the story line in perfect ways. This did improve at the book went on though!

Overall, this book was better than I expected. There were a couple scenes that spiked my heart rate and I liked the story.

This book fell so flat for me. It started off really good with the premise of six death rom inmates getting a chance to earn their freedom. About 25% of the way through, I realized that I didn’t care at all about any of the characters. I found myself hoping no one won. The flashbacks didn’t really serve much purpose for me as there were too many to provide a normal amount of backstory. It took forever to get to the plot twists. I guessed every one way before they happened. Ultimately, this book was not for me.

Our story follows 2 main characters Brooklyn and Eddy. They are sent to a remote island with 4 others, all of them being death row inmates. The game is the last one remaining gets their freedom. Things on the island aren’t as they seem. I don’t want to say any more because I don’t want to give the story away.

Six death row inmates with approaching execution dates are given letters telling them they have a choice: face execution or compete in a fight to the death survival contest with other prisoners on a private island. Last one standing wins their freedom. What commences is a battle of both pure survival instincts and mind games.

This book is told mainly from two POVs, both death row contestants: Brooklyn and Eddy.

I really enjoyed this book, which was really interesting because it was similar to a “Hunger Games” plot line, but without the innocent contestants. Not to spoil anything, because as compassionate as characters like Brooklyn and Eddy are, they aren’t innocent, and they’ve made bad choices, it’s up to us to decide what we decide about them, knowing what we know.

Anyway, as I said, the game is also not so simple, and combines mind games and survival skills, which makes things really exciting, but I won’t say too much more about that, again, so that I don’t give any spoilers. But trust me, it’s really good. I really enjoyed all the twists and turns this one takes.

The only thing I wish the book got into more was a couple of things that were only briefly mentioned: the characters mention a couple of different tines that laws in the US have changed to make it easier to execute death row inmates and even to put people on death row. Almost like a sort of dystopian world setting that was hinted at. But it wasn’t really explained. I wish it was. It might’ve added some more context to the story - like how Brooklyn was only 8 years from her conviction and two days from her execution.

If you like the survival games genre, this is a great addition. I really devoured it. It’s an excellent read!

A twisted thriller that kept me guessing at every turn! Thank you to BookSirens for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

The synopsis of this book was so intriguing to me that I had to request access to it right away, but nothing could have prepared me for what this book turned out to be. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen and where the story was going, I was completely surprised by the next event. I was on the edge of my seat for this whole book and I had such a good time reading it.

The characters are well fleshed out and their backstories add a lot to the overall lore of the events in this book. By the end, I really cared about our narrators, Eddy and Brooklyn, and was rooting for both of them to win this impossible game. While the other characters were fine, we really didn't get the depth on them that we do for our narrators, which I thought was a strong decision by the author and actually added to my overall enjoyment of the book. I liked that these convicted felons were mysteries to the reader; it added a lot to the creepy factor of the story.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was well-paced, the characters were likeable (for the most part), and it kept me engrossed in the plot for the entirety of the story. There are some major trigger warnings for this book so please look into them before reading, but if it sounds like something you are interested in reading, I would definitely recommend it!

WOW. What an adrenaline filled, wild ride of a novel this was. I absolutely LOVED it. I honestly couldn't put it down, I read it in one sitting.

Brooklyn and Eddy were fantastic main characters. They were both interesting, charismatic, and fierce.
Jillian was a good supporting character, too.

The storyline was compelling, mysterious, and action-packed. I really enjoyed Shade's writing style. It drew me in immediately. I'll definitely be looking up her previous books after this.

I very highly recommend.

5 stars from me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Death Row Games” is a gripping, fast-paced read that kept me hooked from start to finish. The stakes are incredibly high, with life-or-death decisions that had me on edge the entire time. The characters feel real and raw, making it easy to get invested in their fates, and the concept itself is chilling in the best way. The story is packed with twists. It’s an intense, thought-provoking, and thoroughly entertaining read that fans of dark thrillers will devour. Solid 4 stars!

This was such a tense, griping, edge of your seat thriller. Six death row inmates placed on a. Island to fight to the death, last one remaining gets freedom…..does it go to plan?

The characters were phenomenal, the storyline crazy as hell. Absolutely loved this. Was left a little deflated by the very last two pages though it did fit into the context

This was a fun book.

I definitely enjoy the whole prisoners need to kill each other in survival games thing. I did wish for a few more prisoners (it's kind of a small group) and, thus, more killing? But it's fast paced and entertaining.

The author throws a few little surprises in -and one that definitely shocked me.

I liked our characters, though occasionally had a little trouble telling their voices apart.

A fun, fast read!

Death Row Games is an interesting and engaging story that is sure to grab your attention from the first page. The moment I began to read It, I was lost in its world from start to finish. The mystery and suspense kept me racing to the end as I followed all the characters, wondering who was going to make it and how they would accomplish that task.

Six death row inmates are given the chance to get their freedom back. The six inmates are dropped on a deserted island to fight to the death for their freedom. Death Row Games reminded me so much of the movie The Hunger Games in so many ways.

I liked that we get to see the story through more than one character's eyes. I had no problem following each character's story. I liked that we got to know each character through flashbacks as the characters remembered how they ended up on the island and on death row.

I recommend Death Row Games to all suspense and thriller fans! Grab a copy of Death Row Games today for the adventure of a lifetime!

This book sounded so promising: six death row inmates dropped off on a remote island to fight to the death for their freedom!

Six death row inmates are handed a letter inviting them to compete for their freedom days before their executions. Blindfolded, chained and dropped off a helicopter into the ocean. The goal is to be the last one standing, fight or die trying. But they soon realize they are not the only ones hunting each other.

The first 70% of the book was fast paced and suspenseful. The twists and turns had me hooked and I could not wait to turn the page. I was disappointed with the ending. I feel like there could have been more, it felt rushed and unfinished.

Another issue I had with the writing style was the way Shade went back in time with the characters’ POV’s. Some chapters were headed with the character’s name and “5 years before” or “10 years before” and in other chapters we were transported to the past without any context or warning. It was very fragmented and hard to follow at times.

Overall, this was a 3-star read for me.

This was a good book, but not a great one for me. I was hoping for more depth, like if this was a seven layer dip, we hit maybe layer 3 or 4 and I wanted it all!

I liked, who I would consider the main character, Brooklyn. Her skills and strength from her life with her father was intriguing and I would’ve loved even more of that aspect.

I didn’t expect the twist at the end, so points to the author for fooling me!

Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for this book! All opinions are my own.

This book plays with the heart and minds of six death row inmates, all due to be executed in the next week or so. Each gets a visit from a guard, with a special embossed invitation offering them the chance to win their freedom. All they have to do is let the guard know their answer and they will be taken away to an isolated island the very next day! The rules are simple, the last person standing by any means, wins their freedom, so long as they don’t cross the red line. Most of the prisoners are described in the book and give the reasons for why they want to gain their freedom. One woman, Brooklyn Winters, killed the man who drugged and raped her friend and tried to do the same to her and instead of being able to plead self-defence, his rich friends and family managed to get her the death penalty! She hopes to be reunited with her father, who raised her alone in the woods form an early age. Eddy Petrov is a former Navy SEAL, with a wife and daughter, who was sentenced to death for killing a group of men who provoked him in a bar. His years of service had changed him and left him with permanent injuries, and he blacked out when he attacked the men, after one threatened his family.

Each of the prisoners is dropped into the water surrounding the island, from a helicopter, and told to swim towards a flag on the beach, where some rudimentary supplies await them. In a crate is a few water bottles, some granola bars, a limited supply of water purification tablets and a sheet of paper with each of their mug shots and what crimes they were in prison for. Each of the prisoners will be able to easily identify who their foes are, never mind the bright orange jumpsuits they are all wearing! Another of the prisoners is a serial killer, with over twenty known victims, certainly someone to be wary of. None of them feel they have much choice but to sign up to the Death Row Games, as their executions are coming up and this will guarantee them their freedom, if they are the last one left alive. But nothing on the island is quite as they might have expected, and the advantage goes to those with a bit more common sense and knowledge of bushcraft and evading others. Eddy has a major disadvantage he doesn’t like others to know about and he will have to be more aware of his surroundings than the others. There is a second woman, Jillian Ward, on the island, who looks like she could be knocked over by a breeze but has a deadly looking gaze. An ugly, plump man, Ronny Truik, who went from sexual assault to murder, a younger man, Hans Baneston, a terrorist who set off a bomb on a train and wished he’d killed more, and then the most infamous of all, Sven Greenfield, the serial killer! Some of the prisoners will have more of an advantage on the island than others, and the women in particular will have to watch out for two of the prisoners and their predilection. The story goes back in time with some of the prisoners, showing their past and what led them to this point in their life, whilst also showing details of their survival efforts on the island and some of the mistakes they make. Trust is a difficult thing to come by between strangers and there is no rule to stop people joining forces, apart from the fact only one person can still be standing at the end of their time on the island.

There are lots of unexpected twists and turns in the storyline, as nothing turns out quite how you expect in these cruel games. Even the ending brings yet another surprise and you are left wondering what is going to happen to any who survive the games. I certainly can’t wait to read more of this author’s books, if this is how they turn out! An excellent read that I would recommend to one and all. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout, and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I had received this book from the author and the fine folks at Booksprout in return for an honest and fair review.

This book was a significant departure from what I usually read. It's still a thriller (I guess...). I enjoyed the multiple points of view and the fact that they didn't really reinforce what I had already read. Having never read this author previously, I was pleasantly surprised.

"Death Row Games" by Shade Owens is a page-turner that tells an interesting scenario of six death row inmates being offered one last chance to avoid death if they agree to a version of a Faustian bargain. The catch: they are being shipped to a remote location where they will have to kill the other island death row inmates. The last person standing wins their freedom. Each contender for the prize of freedom has a chip implanted in them that emits an electronic signal with a countdown. It starts at six, and each time one of the prisoners dies, the number goes down.

Though there are six prisoners involved in this author's take on "The Most Dangerous Game" (a classic short story in which a big game hunter becomes the prey of a retired Russian general who hunts humans for sport on his private island), the primary characters in this story are Brooklyn Winters and Eddy.

The backstory behind the primary characters is that Brooklyn Winters has been given a death sentence after killing a politically-connected individual, who was secretly a serial date rapist.

Eddy is a former military veteran, large in stature (listed as 6'5 and muscular), who was convicted of multiple homicides following a tragic incident at a hometown drinking establishment. Eddy had been out for a few drinks following his return from the theatre of combat (Iraq) when he is harrassed by a group of locals that he walks away from attempting to turn the other cheek. However, comments were made by the group threatening his wife and child by name resulting in Eddy killing four people.

There is tension and suspense from almost the start of the book. The characters are complex and morally ambiguous, making it difficult to root for any one side. The pacing of the story was good, the characters were well thought out, and the plot was perfectly executed.

On a five-star scale, I would normally have given this book a solid four stars (but after the conclusion of the story it seemed that the author added two chapters flashing back to the childhood of Brooklyn which I felt were unnecessary and the ending didn’t do it for me), as such I would give this book three and a half stars (which rounds up to four stars).

As with any of my literary ramblings, this is just my five cents worth.

*I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.*
"Six death row convicts. One island. Last person standing wins their freedom."

This was my first book by Shade Owens and let me tell you, it won't be my last! Death Row Games mainly follows two of the convicts as they are immersed into a terrifying game of kill or be killed. Brooklyn Winters is on death row after being charged with first degree murder. With just days to go before her execution date, she receives a letter from a mysterious person. She is invited to an island to participate in a no holds barred fight to the death with five other death row inmates. Whomever is the last person standing wins their freedom. What is there to lose? Brooklyn will either die in prison or on an island fighting for her life. And who knows, she just might make it out alive.
From the moment they set foot on the shore of the island, the game is on. Who can use survival smarts and stay alive? Who will prevail? And is this game what it seems on the surface, or is there a sinister secret lurking within?
With non-stop building suspense this book had me hooked right from the start. Shade Owens brilliantly weaves the past and present into her characters to really make them come to life. Each inmate has a different story so you get to see behind their thoughts and motivations and find out what makes them tick. Owens ability to create this sense of tension, desperation and fear is outstanding and really immerses you into the island along with the characters. And those twists!! I thought I was so clever and knew exactly what was going on.. I didn't. I really like the multiple POVs that we are given. They lend insight and clues into the circumstances that led our characters to where they are now. Definitely kept me reading well past " just one more chapter".

Thank you to NetGalley, Shade Owens and Red Raven publishing for this ARC! Expected publishing date is December 27th 2024.

Thank you NetGalley and Red Raven Publishing for this eCopy to review

When I first picked up Death Row Games by Shade Owens, I was immediately drawn into the intense and gripping world that Owens has masterfully created. The premise is both chilling and fascinating: six death row convicts are given a chance to win their freedom by participating in a deadly survival game on a remote island. The last person standing walks away free, while the others face certain death.

Brooklyn Winters, is a compelling character who finds herself on death row after being charged with first-degree murder. When she receives a mysterious letter offering her a chance at freedom, she is understandably sceptical. However, faced with the grim reality of execution, she decides to take the risk and participate in the game.

The plot unfolds with relentless tension as Brooklyn and the other convicts navigate the treacherous island, facing not only the dangers of the environment but also the constant threat from each other. Owens does an excellent job of building suspense, and I found myself on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning pages to see what would happen next.

One of the standout aspects of the book is the way Owens delves into the backgrounds and motivations of the characters. Each convict has a unique story, and their interactions add depth to the narrative. The moral dilemmas they face and the alliances they form (and break) make for a thought-provoking read.

The writing is sharp and vivid, painting a clear picture of the island's harsh landscape and the brutal reality of the game. Owens' ability to create a sense of claustrophobia and desperation is impressive, and it kept me hooked from start to finish.

While the book is undeniably thrilling, it also raises important questions about justice, redemption, and the human will to survive. The ending is both satisfying and thought-provoking, leaving me with plenty to ponder long after I finished reading.

I agreed to read this ARC because I loved the synopsis. It seemed like a premise similar to The Hunger Games, but with six people sentenced to death. And in fact, it is — six people are on death row and are given the opportunity to be free, but they must eliminate each other on a remote island with only basic supplies to survive. The last one standing will have their freedom guaranteed. However, we already know that nothing is what it seems, and there are at least three or four twists that will leave us baffled. It's a book with a fair amount of violence, but without it, it wouldn't have the same impact. In a race for survival, and not being able to trust anyone, who will emerge victorious from these grim games? With multiple POVs and shifting between the past and present, we get to know each of the six condemned characters' stories and also the motivations behind these games.
I recommend this book — if you like The Hunger Games, you'll definitely enjoy it ☺.

Who could've thought a book about a death game on an island could be this boring?
Without spoiling the plot, the book isn't actually about that premise so you should look elsewhere if that's what you were after.

The pacing in this book is truly horrible. Despite generous usage of line breaks and having ample dialogue, it still felt like a very slow read because not only does the book switch between the two main characters over and over, it's also full of flashbacks. I'd wager there are almost more flashbacks in this book than content set in the present day.
Both of the characters each get their own flashbacks which tell their entire life story. I'm not a writer but I bet having flashbacks in this manner goes against some writing convention, and there's a reason no one writes like this unless they are very skilled or have a very compelling reason to do so.

As said, this book is boring. The characters spend a large part of it hiding and doing nothing while the flashbacks play out. The ending is also unsatisfying and ends on a sort of cliffhanger.
It's apparently supposed to be some sort of big reveal at the end, but I don't think it was that shocking because you're just not given a reason to care about the character. And the stakes were too low at that point:

Most characters are also very one-dimensional. After a few chapters, you get that one character cares about his family because that's all he thinks about. You can make a drinking game out of every time his wife and daughter are mentioned. Show, don't tell, please.

1.5/5 rounded up and I would skip because I can't really find any reason to read or recommend this book.
