Deep space fighter pilot Calla Wren survived a hellish childhood and fought to earn her wings in the Alliance Defense. After a battle with mercenaries leaves her ship badly damaged, Calla crashes on the storm-ravaged moon Iosa. Badly injured with no way to call for help, she and her ship fall into the hands of bloodthirsty raiders.
Plagued by memories and nightmares, former elite assassin Vos Turek retired to a new, quiet life on Iosa, searching for peace in the depths of its lavender seas. His hard-won safe haven is threatened when an Alliance Defense fighter crashes into the ocean nearby. Logic and caution tell Vos to leave the badly injured human pilot to her fate, but the moment he catches her scent, he knows he can’t let her die. The gods have sent him his true mate—if he can rescue her from the raiders and save her life.
As fiercely independent Calla recovers in Vos's care, they find kinship over their traumatic pasts. Despite Calla's deep mistrust of Vos and her determination to reenlist in the Defense for the bonus that would give her true freedom, they are drawn together by a connection deeper than the power of the true mate bond. But when a vicious, vengeful adversary tracks them to Iosa, Calla and Vos must confront the very real ghosts of their pasts and find a way not only to survive, but to heal.

The plot is simple, which makes sense given the book’s very cozy vibe. It’s a forced proximity romance. I enjoyed it, even though I didn’t really feel any strong chemistry between the two protagonists. He falls madly for her because it’s in his genetics—basically fated mates—but other than that, their relationship feels very friendly. There’s no real tension between them, and I found that a bit lacking.
That aside, it’s a smooth and enjoyable read. It’s just that we spend way too much time in their heads. They overthink a lot—for no particular reason. There’s literally an entire chapter of the protagonist just thinking in the garden and drinking tea..
I just can't get over how adorable this novel was! I cried, I laughed, and my faith in humanity (or whatever alien species Vos is) was restored. Read if you like...
🐚 Sunshine MMC with a dark past 🚀Broken FMC (figuratively and literally) 🐚 SO MUCH HURT COMFORT (you guys aren't ready for it) 🚀Adorable, sentient, extra-terrestrial dog thing 🐚"I didn't know my bodily fluids could do THAT!" 🚀If you won't love yourself, I'll do it for you, god damn it 🐚Sexually-charged fighting (but not in a toxic way) 🚀Insta-love with fated mates that still felt natural 🐚Tentacles (soooo many tentacles) 🚀No stakes beyond the romance 🐚"You're not a monster to me." 🚀Forced proximity because otherwise, FMC's injuries may kill her 🐚"Why do I find your competence so sexy?" 🚀Touch him/her and you probably die 🐚Domestic life shenanigans 🚀Oddly complex discussions of morality, collateral, and the cost of war 🐚 SWOONWORTHY slowburn

This cozy alien romance was a refreshing read with a captivating plot. Vos, a retired deadly assassin, turns out to be an absolute cinnamon roll when Calla quite literally falls from the sky. After her crash landing on Iosa, Calla awakens to find herself in the arms of a cephalopod Fortusian man. With her body broken and healing, she has no choice but to trust the stranger who miraculously saved her life.
Sheltered in the Storm was truly a whirlwind of a read, but in the best of ways. Despite being a cozy romance, this book brings the heat with some seriously steamy moments—so be prepared! I truly admired Calla’s ability to survive and surpass all the cruelties that life decided to throw her way. The pacing was fast yet flowed seamlessly, keeping me engaged from start to finish. The author did an amazing job with both characters’ perspectives, bringing their emotions to life in a way that made me feel every moment alongside them.
WOW! This book was absolutely perfect for me after I finished a very heavy, epic fantasy! It the perfect amount of cute & cozy, mixed with tension & emotion! The trauma healing, added with the spiciness….just ugh 🤤.
Sweetest Cinnamon Roll MMC who goes absolutely feral for his mate is one of the best things ever! Vos was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! And Calla, was just a beautifully fierce character. Her strength was just enchanting and I loved seeing her growth and open up over the time they spent together!
I cannot recommend this book enough! Need a little pick-me up read, that leaves you panting, needing a cold shower, but also with all the good feels vibes, this is it! Fantastic cephalopod alien romance!! 👏👏👏
Thank you for this gifted ARC from Haus of Fables.
So I got the absolute pleasure of getting to Arc Read Sheltered in the Storm by @lisaedmonds.author and it was probably one of the best alien books I've read in some time.
Both Calla and Vos spent most of their lives before meeting one another living lives that were thrust upon them. Both had traumatic back stories which shaped their personalities and made them feel so real. One this I absolutely loved about this book was how typically in alot of alien novels the MMC is the strong one. A deadly force but soft for the FMC and this book kinda challenged that by making Calla the same way. Although it took her a lot longer to warm up to Vos than it did him to her, she ends up being a really strong and solid presence for him to lean on. Calla is headstrong and brave. Always pushing forward even when things look bleak. Vos is the king of consent. Strong and protective and not half the monster he thinks himself to be. And of course we have poe who is adorable 😆💜
Overall I loved this book and if you love alien novels you will love this.
A heart-warming and spicy tale of two hurt souls healing each other both physically and mentally. I love the hurt/comfort trope and an MMC who's a hugger, and this one gave hugs with arms and tentacles - I was aww-ing often while reading. The spicy scenes were many and 🔥. I also enjoyed that both MCs were kick-ass, and they had a smart animal companion working to get them together. I'll be coming back for more from this author!
The spiciest and yet cosiest little alien romance you’ll ever read! I love Lisa Edmonds work and this was no different. She has captivating and relatable characters with easy to read and flowing dialogue. I truly had no way of predicting the storyline of this one. Our mmc is so beautiful and respectful with our damaged and guarded fmc. We get to watch a healthy and happy relationship bloom and be challenged with a hea and plenty of spiceeeee ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

This was actually my first published alien romance (not counting all the fanfics I’ve read 🤣) 🛸👽
𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 is a standalone alien romance set in a rich intergalactic world following a fighter pilot FMC & a tentacled ex-assassin MMC!

I had a great time reading this! The scifi aspects were immersive but easily digestible. It was such a cool universe to read about.
It’s so much sweeter than I expected. Who knew a ruthless ex-assassin could be so gentle???
The heroine was so eldest daughter-coded. She’s fierce and HYPER-independent. It was hard for her to let him in but he care for her when she needed him most, not asking for anything in return.
Vos is one of the assassin members of the Silent Guard, and after his last mission goes poorly, he seeks a peaceful life on a moon far out in the galaxy. For the most part, he is left alone by the raiders living nearby. He is at peace and content for the most part until Alliance pilot Calla Wren makes a crash landing in the sea, and almost gets taken by the raiders. Vos was originally not going to intervene, but then he got a whiff of her sent, and everything in that moment changed. Calla was Vos' true mate. Something he never thought he would have. With Calla badly injured from the crash, and in the radars hands, he goes berserk and kills them all, saves her, and brings her back to his home to help heal her. Calla has never trusted easily, especially with her upbringing, so when she wakes in Vos' care, and he tells her that she is his true mate, she doesn't believe it at first. But the walls slowly come down.
I don't know what it says about me, but there is just something about the hurt/comfort trope that I love so freaking much. Vos and Calla's story is now one of my favorites! Vos is so so sweet, and seeing a big bad assassin all down bad for girl? I love to see it. Calla rightfully so didn't trust Vos in the beginning, but as he slowly helped her body heal, he also helped her mind heal and show her that she is loveable, and what love is like. Their happily ever after was so deserved, and I loved to see it.
As someone who adores monster romances, I've been wanting to get into alien romances. I thought this one would have some far more interesting character arcs than some others. The story follows deep space fighter pilot Calla, a resilient survivor of a troubled childhood, and an elite assassin Vos, who rescues her when Calla’s ship crashes.
The world-building is interesting, but a little more brief than I expected. I appreciated the moments of character growth and the complex backstories of the characters. Calla and Vos both have deeply scarred histories and their bonding over shared trauma is one of the best parts of the story. Their relationship is sweet and genuine, with hints of adoration that make you root for their eventual healing—if only the relationship weren’t established so quickly. I’m not one for instant love; I struggle with enjoying 'mating bonds' because it just feels like such an artificial bond.
Overall, while Sheltered in the Storm is an enjoyable, spicy read and far from a deep, plot-driven, character-rich story. I know many readers will adore this fun alien romance, but for me, it lacked the depth I usually crave. Honestly, I'm still not sure that alien romance is for me.
Thanks so much to the author and Haus of Fables for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
So ngl this is my very first alien romance (cephalopod alien romance the biologist in me kicked my feet so hard reading this book- ALL the tentacles.
Like for real check the triggers but also know what you’re getting into this is an Allende romance with multiple appendages ! That being said there is a lot of trauma for our FMC Calla and our MMC Vos to work through and they don’t do it all smoothly but they do get there in the end.
This was cute lighthearted and quite hilarious in spots. I loved watching calla rise like a phoenix from the ashes.
I would definitely recommend this read it’s hard to rate it since it’s my first alien romance but I say definitely a strong 4 ⭐️ almost 4 1/2 and the spice was well…Tentacles …🐙🐙🐙🐙 so I’m giving this instead of 🌶️hahaha
I love character driven stories and that's exactly what this is! Neither Vos nor Calla think they're worthy of having a mate because of the terrible lives they've lived. But after crash landing on the the moon Vos now calls home, both are forced to deal with their tortured past in order to have a brighter future together.
Calla is such a strong and independent character. For a lot of the book she is recovering from injuries and she's struggling with that loss of independence. Watching the two learn each other's boundaries and needs is really beautiful.
Vos is a consent king! Despite being a retired assassin, or maybe because of it, he understands having one's choice taken away and he does everything in his power to make Calla feel comfortable. Even if that means fighting his innate need to do everything for his mate.
Super cute story with hot alien tentacle spice. Defo recommend!!
My first Lisa Edmonds book. I’ll be honest, I mainly applied for this ARC because my good friend Lindsey did the cover art work but I do really enjoy monster romance/alien romance.
I mostly enjoyed this, but the pacing was a bit weird? This is relatively short, just shy of 300 pages and I feel it could’ve benefited from being a bit longer. The bulk of the book was Calla healing and Vos caring for her while they get to know each other, with the adversary mentioned in the blurb not coming in to the story until 87%??? Idk, it felt very sudden and rushed.
What a fun read this was. After finishing my last read, I was in the mood for some easy to read, with a good plot and a bit of spice and Sheltered in the Storm delivered on that.
If you're a fan of Ice Planet Barbarians or even the 'A Deal with a Demon' series (specifically The Kraken's Sacrifice) then you will love this book.
The story follows Vos, an assassin to the Silent Guard and Call, an Alliance Defense fighter who gets stranded on the moon that Vos is living on. After saving her from an attack from raiders he takes her home to heal and look after her and that is when the fun begins...
I will defo be continuing the series and I can't wait for the next instalment.
Thank you to Haus of Fables for giving me the opportunity to review this book
Sheltered in the Storm is my first alien romance. The characters are good and I felt the connection grow between them as trust slowly formed. It helped that the physiology although vastly different in many ways was still human at its genetic base. I can completely understand the love that forms between them after the shared experiences they have bern through but I do have to admit I would have preferred fade to black on the actual sexual scenes as it was a bit of an ick factor to me mostly because sone of it is fairly graphic and not in a way I want to visualize lol. However, this may appeal to a lot of hard core alien romance fans so what is ick for me might be perfect bliss for them. So I detract nothing on that count. The world building is great as usual but I feel an even greater exploration would have been lovely as it sounds like despite the dangers it was a truly lovely moon. I also really love this author and I absolutely love her Alice Worth series. So if this rounds out even half as interesting as that series I will have plenty to read on the future! Overall, good read! 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ on spice once they enters the story and fierce characters!
I am so surprised how much I loved this book! Wow it had great character development and world building in a really small location setting, tiny island on a remote moon. But the world felt bigger than that through the characters dialogue and connections. This was the epitome of the hurt/comfort trope both in emotion and in the physical sense.
****Some of my favorite quotes****Swoon!!!
"What would it be like to be with someone with whom I could be authentically myself, and know they were themselves too? To know I would receive an honest answer to any question I asked, and feel comfortable answering questions honestly too?"
“My Calla, I have never been anything but myself with you,” I said. “In fact, I do not think I have ever been more myself.” *************************************************
Vos is a retired assassin created and raised to be nothing more than a tool to kill that would be punished or destroyed for showing any compassion or empathy. He finally gets to the end of his required service and holes up on a tiny island on a remote moon absolutely avoiding anything and everyone. Very hermit status.
Calla is a fighter pilot with little connections to the world. She was sold as a child to a child gladiator organization that fights you till you die or reach age...you rarely reach age to leave. She crash lands on the moon and is seriously injured, like death is imminent. Vos senses she is his mate and saves her, takes her home to heal. Her injuries are beyond normal saving so he acts on instinct as her mate and gives her his blood to save her not knowing if it will actually save her.
These two very damaged but surprisingly still empathetic, compassionate people just connect on so many levels. Their grace and understanding of the other is just heartwarming.
Oh and hes a genetic Hodge podge that includes kraken with tentacles so that is very fun!
Also special shout out to Poe! I loved this side character which really showed each characters ability to see, acknowledge and care for those around them though they are very different in species, skills, language and ability.
Review: This was such a fun read for me. Once I picked this book up, I didn't set it down until I was finished. That was how addicting this book was for me. Not to mention this was aliens with tentacles which made it that much more exciting.
Calla is a deep space fighter pilot that is extremely independent. When she crash lands on a moon the last thing she thought she would do was survive let alone be rescued but a handsome alien with tentacles that saves her life from raiders. While Vos nurses her back to health they grow closer and share in their tragic backstories all while Calla comes to terms with Vos's declaration that she is his true mate.
This was a sweet story that will have you kicking your feet and giggling. The spice was definitely spicing in this one with the tentacles and the surprise knotting. The care that Vos treated Calla with was refreshing and something I needed.
Thank you so much to Haus of Fables and Lisa Edmonds for this ARC! I hope everyone picks this book up on release day!!
What an unexpected delight. I randomly subscribed to Lisa Edmonds’ newsletter months ago, and there’s some free NSFW character art that had me intrigued, but she was having a Black Friday sale for the books so I had to read book 1 to see if I actually liked the books. I loved it!
TENTACLES!!!! I scream into the void. He’s a bioluminescent purple sea monster hybrid who’s down bad with FOUR TENTACLES and his blood (and other things 😎) helps her heal from catastrophic injuries. He’s also got A PAST (secret assassin) with FEELINGS, what’s not to love!
There’s so much world building that needs to happen. It never felt clunky or annoying to read about. Nothing felt like “what even are you talking about?” I was just going with everything.
Their relationship progression felt real and very earned. He obviously fell first (fated mates and all that), but he honoured her wishes and they both talked thru their immense childhood/adult trauma to figure out how they could be together. Also he mended her space uniform when she wanted to leave even though he wanted her to stay (did I cry when he did that, maybe).
I need character art for Poe, the sidekick Anomuran. She’s so funny, total matchmaker vibe, can only say one word “Poe” kinda like Groot, but a crab.
Are we ever gonna find out who threw the bomb into the Bordian embassy during Vox’s last job?
I can’t wait to get the rest of the series.
‘I’d learned long ago that had no mercy - not for me, and not for anyone else.’
‘My tentacles swirled in irritation. Of all the oceans in the galaxy, this fighter had chosen to crash into mine.’
‘He didn’t appear to be seeing any clothing, it his coiled tentacles his everything below his waist.’
‘So help me, I had not survived all the horrors of my life to be eaten by sea monster, no matter how beautiful he was.’
‘My makers had told me in no uncertain terms that those created to serve in the Guard had been genetically engineered to eliminate the desire for a mate. Why would I have studied the details of the most wondrous aspect of Fortusian, when my makers that made me incapable of it? Doing so would only have poured salt in the wound.’
“You are not horrified by my appearance?” he asked, his brow furrowed. “I was stationed in Fortusia for two years,” explained. “Your people combine humanoid DNA with DNA from animal and plant species from across the galaxy.”
“So, back to your biology. If you don’t mind me asking, you have three hearts, four tentacles… and I’m assuming camouflage and colour changing abilities?” “Yes. Also, I have accelerated healing abilities. I can survive extreme temperatures and at vast ocean depths.”
“I ding remember actually crashing, but I recall being in a boat with some men. And I remember you killed them all.”
‘He let out a soft cool that somehow made my body relax and my anger and fear dissipate. As good as it felt, I did not want anyone controlling me in anyway. Not anymore. “Stop. Don’t do that – whatever the hells you just did. Don’t take away my feelings. You have no right.”
‘I was naked in bed next to a cold blooded, highly train killer who just happened to be one of the most beautiful men I’d ever laid eyes on, and you happen to think I was his mate.’
‘… I understood enough about for Fortusian biology to know what that meant. If I left him, he would pine for me for the rest of his days. He could find physical pleasure with others, but never true comfort, or the sense of belonging to another, who also belonged to him.’
‘Perhaps we could become friends. Share quiet, happy moments. I can pretend that would be enough.’
‘My tentacles tried to cling to her bedding. I forced them to release the blanket. I could not distinguish between their unhappiness and my own.’
“A long time ago, a long way from here. Basically another lifetime. It’s nothing you need to be concerned about. I don’t need anyone to slay monsters for me. I grew up and learned to slay my own.”
‘I’d been around the galaxy and had some wild adventures, but I’d never had a giant alien hermit crab try to fix me up with a broody cephalopod man.’
“I could tell you it’s a long story, but it really isn’t,” she said finally, her tone as dry as the deserts of Solan. “Really, I can tell it in five words: I was born on Ganai.
“I’m the one Ganaian child gladiator in fifty who survived to sixteen and earned her freedom,” I said. “I bartered my way off Ganai, put on an Alliance Defense uniform, and busted my ass to earn myself a flight suit.”
“It was a long time ago,” I reminded him, stroking his jaw with my thumb. “I’m alive, and most of the people responsible for what happened to us are dead. Ganai is still a shithole, but it’s a shithole without arenas where rich bastards from across the galaxy watch children fight to the death anymore. No need to be angry at a memory.”
“There are bodies behind me, Vos. A lot of them, same as you. So you don’t have a monopoly on that monster thing.”
More than anything, though, I let Vos into my secrets because he was the first person I’d ever met whose eyes reflected the same darkness I saw when I looked in the mirror. Plus, he deserved to know I might have fallen from the sky, but I was no gift from the heavens.
“Have I destroyed your vision of me?” I asked. “Destroyed my vision of you? Never.” “Calla, the more fully I see you, the more I know my soul fits to yours.”
“What do you see in your future?” I asked. We’d talked about our pasts, but not about days to come.
“Vos,” I pleaded. “Please…” “Please what, my Calla?” he asked, his lips against my ear. “Tell me what you want.”
“I liked that kiss. How many tentacles does it take to turn a kiss into an orgasm, do you think?”
I pulled gently on his tentacle’s grip on my right wrist. He released me immediately, obviously recognizing the difference between my playful and arousing attempts to free myself and this moment, when my desire to touch him meant more. And that was why I’d let him trap me—because I had the key to the trap and could free myself at any time.
“But before we walk to the ocean, would you spar with me? I feel like I’m healed, but I have to make sure I’m up for a fight if something happens. First blood wins.” “Shall we wash and dress, and then choose our weapons?” “That is probably the sexiest thing anyone has ever said to me.”
What an absolutely FANTASTIC book! I was completely besotted with the world the author created. The world building was so fun, immersive, and exciting! This book follows Calla, an Alliance fighter pilot, when she crash lands on a nearby moon (Iosa). The moon is home to a raiders base, so our MMC, VOS, steps in and saves her from these cruel aliens after realizing she’s his mate. He takes her to his home and nurses her back to health, and in doing so, learns that his blood has healing properties! (Which I thought was SUCH a fun twist). Calla and Vos’ love story is so sweet, tender, and spicy!! I loved the trauma healing both of these characters went through together. It was such a beautiful story!
💜 Badass Human FMC ❤️ Ex-Assassin Cephalopod MMC 💜 Hurt/Comfort ❤️ Trauma Healing 💜 He nurses her back to health ❤️ Fun crab-esque sidekick named Poe 💜 magical blood and cum ❤️ knots 💜 tentacle play ❤️ anal playyyyyy
Sheltered in the Storm is a new alien romance featuring Vos, a former assassin and Calla, a fighter pilot, who meet after Calla crash lands on the moon Vos has made home.
I really enjoyed the world building in this story, the descriptions were vivid and really helped to set the scene. I also enjoyed the characters getting to know each other and opening up to each other, as well as slowly discovering more of their respective backstories.
In saying that, it was a little too smut-heavy for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good spicy scene but I also enjoy balance. I would have loved to have seen more progression of certain parts of the story with a bit less spice.
I’m hopeful that we’ll see more from this universe and maybe the characters will pop up in future books :)
Thank you for this gifted ARC from Haus of Fables ❤️ all views are my own.
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 (rounded up for rating) Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
Sheltered in the Storm was my first book by Lisa Edmonds and I FLEW through this one – it was a one day read (I wish it was one sitting, but my child doesn’t allow me that kind of peace lol). I don’t know about you…but if he isn’t a humanoid alien man with tentacles that he knows how to use *wink wink,* who falls in love with me on scent alone, saves my life without speaking a word to me (the touch her and ☠️ vibes were real and I was here for it!) and not to mention is a KING of consent?! Well…then I don’t want him.

Calla Wren is a bädäss space fighter pilot who clawed her way out of a hellish childhood to ascend to her position with the Alliance Defense. While on a mission, Calla engages in battle with mercenaries and her ship is badly damaged, leading her to crash on the storm-ravaged moon Iosa. With comms down and no way to call for help, she’s at the hands of unsavory raiders…until he catches her scent.
Vos Turek is a former elite assässïn who has retired to Iosa – trying to find peace within the moon’s lavender seas. While drifting, his safe haven is threatened with the Alliance Defense fighter ship crash, and all of Vos’s training tells him to leave the pilot to their fate. But, once he catches her scent? All bets are off. The gods have sent him his true mate and he will do everything in his power to save her life.
Calla is fiercely independent and trusts no one, while Vos’s past is littered with secrets that could endanger them both. Bonding over their traumatic pasts, a tenuous relationship starts to build. As she heals, Calla is determined to hold onto her dream to reenlist in the Defense for the bonus to give her security and freedom…though as the days pass, she finds that her dreams might be changing and the true mate bond cannot be ignored. But when a vicious and vengeful ghost from Vos’s past resurfaces, will they come out unscathed? Or is the possibility of a life together going to be ripped away before it even begins?
Whew! Vos. Vos. Vos. What I wouldn’t do to find myself in his care 👀 I LOVED the dynamic between Vos and Calla! Each of these MCs were strong physically, as well as mentally, and their trauma bonding provided a space for each of them to begin healing. Vos was the most scrumptious cinnamon roll with touch her and ☠️ energy, and ALWAYS put Calla first. When these two began to trust one another? I was kicking my feet up with glee and the 🔥🔥 that followed once the tension broke? Yes. The tentacle spice was chef’s kiss! Using Vos’s tentacles as restraints, Vos solely focused on his mate’s pleasure, tentacles everywhere and a special 🍆? 🥵 Say. Less.
Alien/Monster romance lovers? This is a fast-paced, sweet and spicy read that’s perfect for your TBR!
Oh my heart. This was so good. 😭😭😭 I'm really new to Alien romance and wasn't really sure how this would land *ba dum tss* but I am so happy I read this and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
Vos is an assassin for an organization called The Guard. They are an elite organization filled with soldiers that were literally bred for this purpose. Vos specifically has some human characteristics like his two arms and legs. He has some unique characteristics to his Fortusian species, like his 3 hearts and his "special" abilities. As well as cephalopod characteristics. He has gills, can breathe underwater, and 4 tentacles that come out of his back that literally have minds of their own, all 4 of them. Following orders and killing his targets are all he's known for his whole life and what he was told he would only ever know since most people die before their 20 year contract is up. When his last job doesn't go the way it is supposed to Vos is faced with a choice that goes against everything he has been trained to do. When he survives the ordeal he decides to disappear to a far corner of protected territory to live in isolation.
Calla is a fighter pilot for the Alliance Defense. She miraculously survived a childhood as a gladiator and in adulthood decided to enlist as a pilot for an extended period of time and then use the retirement bonus to travel the galaxy. When finishing up a mission she decides to take a detour for a little respite and ends up crash landing on a moon that she didn't even know existed. Through a fated chance Vos was nearby in the water when she crash landed. Believing he was bred without the ability to have a fated mate Vos was almost brought to his knees when he caught her scent and knew he had to save her.
This is a very he falls first fated mates forward story and I ate it up like it would sustain my life to do so. 😂 His physiology changes to meet her needs. Blood and 💦 with healing properties specifically for her body. A unique cooing sound he never made before that soothes her heart and mind. Tentacles that can make her O just from their touch under the right circumstances. Ahhh I loved it all. This story was a hurt/comfort story to the highest tier. Both of them came from tragic backgrounds. Both of them fought for survival for their whole lives. Both of them believed themselves to be monsters that were underserving of something as pure and fragile as love. And both of them deserved to be chosen by one another, just as they were.
Calla is such a badass, Vos is the consent king x1000. Their banter, the way they pick and play, even sparring together was so amazing. Special shoutout to the animal sidekick! I will always get excited when there's one in the story and Poe is definitely one of my all time favorites. I want a giant hermit crab to yell at me and tend to the garden while I sip tea 😭😍 I cannot wait to continue this series. Here's me crossing my fingers we meet Calla's sister at some point 🤭🤞
In Lisa Edmonds' Sheltered in the Storm, the vast, tempest-tossed landscapes of the moon Iosa serve as the perfect backdrop for a tale of survival, healing, and unexpected love. The novel, blending elements of science fiction and romance, captivates with its thrilling pace and deep exploration of trauma and redemption.
Calla Wren, a formidable fighter pilot for the Alliance Defense, emerges as a survivor not just of space battles but also of a deeply troubled past. Her latest battle leaves her stranded and severely injured on Iosa, a moon notorious for its hostile conditions and even more dangerous inhabitants. Edmonds skillfully portrays Calla's grit and resilience, creating a protagonist who is as complex as she is courageous.
The introduction of Vos Turek, a former assassin seeking solace from his violent history, adds a rich layer to the narrative. His character is beautifully developed, oscillating between his desire for peace and the instincts of his past. When Vos decides to rescue Calla against his better judgment, Edmonds masterfully sets the stage for a compelling relationship dynamic that is fraught with conflict yet underscored by an undeniable bond.
The concept of "true mates" introduced in the story brings a mystical element to their relationship, providing both a narrative drive and a thematic exploration of destiny versus choice. As Calla and Vos navigate their pasts and the growing tension between them, their interaction evolves into a profound connection that challenges their views on freedom and belonging.
While the setting of Iosa is evocatively described, combining the serene beauty of its seas with the lethal unpredictability of its storms, the story sometimes wrestles with maintaining this balance in its pacing. The mid-section of the book, dense with character introspection, occasionally slows down the momentum built by the early action sequences.
Additionally, the novel's exploration of personal demons and the path to emotional healing is both thoughtful and nuanced. Edmonds does not shy away from the harsh realities her characters have faced, instead using these experiences to forge a deeper understanding and empathy between Calla and Vos. This emotional depth is one of the book's strongest points, making the story not just a space adventure but also a meaningful journey of self-discovery.
In conclusion, Sheltered in the Storm is a compelling blend of action, science fiction, and romance. It offers readers an intense, character-driven story that explores the complexities of healing and love under the most extreme circumstances. Lisa Edmonds delivers a solid four-star novel that will resonate with readers looking for depth and authenticity in their sci-fi adventures.
Vos is a retired assassin living on a small moon orbiting a major planetary stop. Trying to live out a quiet life, his world is turned upside down when Calla crashed onto his planet, and he realizes that she is his mate. Rescuing her from raiders who would torture her, he must nurse her back to health and win her affection. But they both must come to terms with their pasts to figure out what the future holds. Since there are only 2 characters throughout most of the book, you really get a good grasp of who they are. It is dual POV and switches between both characters every other chapter. Both characters have a tragic backstory that has shaped their lives. Calla is a fiercely independent person who works for the Alliance as a pilot. All she thinks she wants is to re-enlist so she can get a bonus and end up traveling after her time with them is done. Vos is a quiet, keep to himself kind of person who has been happy living alone in obscurity on this moon. But when they meet, they both begin to look at life in a different way. This is marketed as a cozy alien romance. In my opinion, I am not sure I would have marked this as cozy. There is little violence, but a lot more graphic content than I would consider cozy. Personally, I don't read books that have that much open door, I'd give this 4/5 on the spice chart. (I did not take away any stars on that though since it is personal preference.) The character and world building were great and the tragic backstories gave it some good depth. If you are a fan of alien romance, then this book is for you.
What an earnest and emotionally raw story, and yet PHEW so spicy!
Lieutenant Calla Wren has been a fighter all her life. Even when her ship is blindsided by debris after fighting off raiders and plummets to a foreign moon, she resolves to survive. And she does…saved from the brink of death by a mysterious alien with purple skin and four tentacles who tells her she’s his mate. As a former assassin trying to live a quiet retirement, the last thing Vos Turek expects is for his mate to literally fall into his life. But after saving her life will he be able to let her go?
This was very cozy and low conflict; these two getting to know each other while Calla healed was the bulk of the plot.
And what a beautiful journey it was. I loved the way Calla & Vos opened up to one another. Vos, who never thought a true mate was in his future, and Calla, who only ever wanted to be free. Both haunted by bloody pasts, and harboring deep feelings of unworthiness because of it. And yet they always remained hopeful, even when acting guarded or indecisive.
Enough about the deeply felt emotions though…this was spicy AF! Tentacle play, knots, surprising orgasms…this has it all. The physiological “mate” elements were a delight and kept surprising me throughout.
Edmonds has a clear command of her universe that will grab you right away. Planets, species, customs, history…even cultural perceptions all add to a rich tapestry. I can’t wait to meet more Fortusians! Thank you to the author for the ARC!

✨Initial Thoughts✨ This book was so much fun! I read it around Valentine’s Day and it was perfect! It has so many of my favorite tropes plus the characters are so endearing. The stakes are low and the spice is high and if you’re like me and suffering from the winter blues or just need a break from world events, this is the perfect solution. Calla accidentally crashes her spacecraft on a random moon. She is rescued from a group of raiders by Vos who lives close by where the crash happened. Calla is extremely injured and almost dies, but Vos heals her and cares for her. They find out they are true mates pretty early on, but because of Calla’s traumatic childhood, she is weary of trusting anyone enough to settle down. Together, they find love and trust.
✨Pros✨ * Fated Mates - on of my favorite tropes * He saves her life and takes care of her - another favorite micro trope. * I love how Calla and Vos find comfort and trust like they never experienced before with each other. * This was so delightfully spicy. * Low stakes. It was great to read this during a mentally stressful time in my life. It brought so much joy.
✨Cons✨ * No notes. This was just plain fun.
Thank you to Haus of Fables and the author for the gifted copy and the opportunity to review this book.
This is the first book in the Fortusian Mates series, a collection of sci-fi monster romance standalones. While this is primarily a cozy and (very) spicy fated mates story, there is some violence on and off page so please check trigger warnings. I received an advance review copy and my thoughts are my own. Thank you to the author and Haus of Fables for my eArc.

Nickname:My Calla, My mate
The Lovely: I loved the hurt/comfort aspect of the story, especially that both the MMC and the FMC were hiring and providing comfort to the other. While the MMC is a sweet softie, the FMC also provided comfort and healing to him. I loved the caring acts and how they truly respected each other’s needs.
The Mundane: While this is a cozy romance, I was expecting, based on the blurb, something tension-ful to happen towards the end. Which, it did, but it felt quite short and compressed, limiting the emotional impact of the event to me.
Recommendation: I was excited to venture out from my paranormal monster romances to alien/sci-fi monster romance and this book definitely hit the spot. If you’re in the mood for a cozy romance but with a tentacled alien, and you love hurt/comfort vibes, I think you would like this book.
One thing about me: I love aliens. I know, I know. You all know this. But we've got a new cozy alien romance series, OK!? The Fortusian Mates!
Sheltered in the Storm was the cutest, sweetest, coziest, spiciest little alien monster romance. Cozy because the majority of the story centers around our alien MMC Vos nursing our human FMC Calla back to health after she crash lands on a planet and is abducted by rebel aliens. So we're spending a lot of time in forced proximity with doctor & patient vibes. I loved how both of these characters had their own history and backstory beyond their mating, which made them feel more mature and independent. I love that our MMC is a consent KING, and while most alien romances I've read portray the alien as a grumpy immovable wall, Vos is really just a giant cinnamon roll... who will hulk out if you're in danger. Did I mention he has 4 tentacles and can make you see stars by just wrapping his tentacles around you? This was surprisingly very spicy from the 50% mark on! Fun spicy scenes, with a lot of variation... and knotting! All the good things.
4-4.5 stars. I only wish the conflict at the end had been a bit longer.

‘So help me, I had not survived all the horrors of my life to be eaten by a sea monster, no matter how beautiful he was.’
‘Perhaps we are haunted by the fact we did not get to choose.’
Calla, a deep space fighter pilot crash lands on a barely inherited planet. Her memory of the crash is hazy, that is until it comes to a purple tentacled sea monster who… saved her? But why? It turns out Calla isn’t wrong about Vos wanting to eat her, but not in the way she thinks…😉
This book is an easy to read monster romance, focusing mostly on the romantic development between Vos & Calla. There is a plot but it takes a little bit of a back seat at times, which left me wanting a bit more depth at times. The writing style is fun and easy to consume, however there was quite a bit of reptition of certain words or phrases. I think this book might be a good intro to tentacle s✖️ut, fair warning there is also knotting in this book. You definitely can’t say the spice is boring, because it’s anythung but! 🌶️
There were a few things I found a little odd but they’re more a reflection of how I feel about Vos as a character. I don’t dislike him but it a bit weird how he always had her wrapped up like human burrito 🌯😂 and the cooing thing just seemed a bit manipulative, but maybe I misinterpreted it 🤷🏼♀️
Overall a fun read, I just wanted a little bit more depth to really feel the stakes of the plot & to fall in love with the characters.
