such a sad comic that explores the idea of insecurity and body dysmorphia is a great. the plot isn’t really what interests me but the character work does. beta ray bill is a man horrified by his looks that he can’t even look at himself in the mirror; he travels to hell for a way to look normal and when he does end up look normal, he still sees himself as the ugly man we before, perfectly encapsulating the feeling of body dysmorphia in a hero’s journey.
This was a good story of how Beta was struggling with how he views himself and what he’s willing to do be how he once was. I liked that the writer called back the rift between him and Thor and his relationship with Sif. It was a short but compelling story, something that readers may be able to identify with at some point in their life. Good read.
I always enjoy anything Daniel Warren Johnson does, and this applies here too. Relatively short (5 issues) run of Beta Ray Bill, and it packs in huge action sequences that are then interweaved between heartfelt character trauma and growth. Big action that sneaks in heart and soul while you catch your breath.
