Sam never thought she’d actually be chosen for a reality show--but next thing she knew, she was whisked away to Australia. Dealing with a producer willing to do whatever he had to do make the show a hit, other women ready to cheat and lie to gain the attention of the bachelor, and a camera operator ready to catch her at her worst every time she turned around, absolutely nothing was as simple as it seemed on TV. Not to mention the pigs, killer rattlesnakes and shoveling manure. Sam wasn’t sure she was going to make it through filming most days--never mind find true love. Alex never thought he’d be on a reality show, but how hard could being surrounded by beautiful women be? A lot harder than he’d thought. The producer changed the rules of the show behind his back, the women were nearly clawing at each other for this attention--and that one contestant he couldn’t get off his mind…

Fantastic debut novel from Susan Stoker takes the reader behind the scenes of a reality dating show and allows you to live the experience from the point of view of one of the contestants (Sam/Sammie).

It wasn't always easy to read Sam's story because I could actually feel her emotions as she experienced the true reality of reality shows ~ and, yes, this is a good thing. I want to feel right along with the characters and Susan has definitely managed to do that for me. I felt I was there with Sam, having the same emotional highs and lows she was having.

Of course, I can't forget about the bachelor (Alex/Al) and the difficulty he experienced as the guy "dating" so many women at one time ~ despite all his frustrations, he survived the experience and both he and Sam came out of of it being the ultimate winners.

A great read for those looking for a sweet, heartwarming read.

Looking forward to what Susan has in store for readers next.

I'm a reading addict, so I go through phases where it feels like all of the books I'm reading sound similar. It's rare that I can find a book that seems unique. I got that with Outback Hearts. Reality TV is all around us, but this is the first book I have read with a reality TV plotline. It was very interesting. You get both POVs in the story, so you know what's going on from both of their perspectives. It felt like a behind-the-scenes look at a reality show. I wondered while reading this if Susan Stoker had ever been a reality show before.

In a sea of models, Sam was the diamond in the rough. Alex was a gentleman and I loved him. He was so protective of women and in general. He was down-to-earth, but he also had the whole I am my own boss thing going on. I would like to see more Alex's on reality TV (or in reality or on TV). It wasn't a short story, but it was a quick read that kept me super engrossed. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. I loved this book and can't wait for more in the series, which I assume by the series name will be reality show based.

Alex and Sam are individually bullied by their friends into applying for a spot in a new reality TV show, even know neither of them know what the premise of the show will be. When they both get selected for the show with a location of the Australian Outback, they both agree to attend to get the free vacation if nothing else. Once in Australia, the producers tell Sam she needs to go by "Sammie" on the show. They have a Meet & Greet to announce that it's a dating show (similar to The Bachelor) and there are 16 female contestants (including Sam) trying to win the bachelor's heart. It doesn't take Sam long to realize that she is the only contestant that doesn't look or act like a model.

When Alex learned that this was a dating reality show, he almost quit. He's a good-looking successful guy and he doesn't need to go on a dating showing to meet women. The more he thought about it, though, he realized that he is a 38-year old man who has never been married. Maybe he should give this a shot? He gave the producers his own set of requirements to be on the show and one of those is access to the behind the scenes tapes of the women. He doesn't want to be blindsided with a woman who isn't really interested in him or hateful to everyone else.

It doesn't take Alex long to realize that there is only one contestant that doesn't fit the mold and it makes her interesting. He becomes more interested the more he knows about her. This reality show isn't like other dating reality shows. The bachelor doesn't always get a choice. Sometimes randomly chosen contestants have to leave and other times they have to win challenges. Can Sam make it through to the end and "win"? If she does, will Alex pick her? If not, can they find a way to overcome it?

You'll just have to find out by reading Outback Hearts.

FYI - The second book in the series is expected to be released this month and I can't wait!!

I purchased this book for my Kindle to read during a 4-day road trip. I figured I would read a little bit each night before going to sleep. Foolish me! Once I started reading it, I didn't put it down until I was finished. I kept telling myself, "Okay, one more chapter. I have to find out what happens next." The problem I usually have with romance novels is that I can't relate to the characters. They are too rich, too beautiful, too challenged, etc. This was not the case in this story. I found something I could relate to in both the main characters. I've watched a few of the dating reality shows, so I could picture what this one would look like when aired. The setting and premise for the reality show both interested me enough to pick up the book and keep reading. Romance novels are a predictable, easy genre to read for the most part. That's why we pick them up and read them! Life is hard and we need the escape. This book was easy and enjoyable, and the story did not disappoint. I'm glad to see that this is a series because I'd like to read more from Susan Stoker.

Fantastic book and looking forward to the second one of the trilogy. Susan Stoker has a talent for captivating the reader immediately. I normally do not read this genre of books, but the title caught my attention and I wanted to check the book out. I had me hooked right away. Love Sammi and cannot believe how naive Alex is. All of the characters are so much fun to read, Susan has the gift of making you feel like you are sitting there amongst the group of girls watching everything unfold right before your eyes.

Please keep up the good work Susan. I know that you will go far in your writings. And you have a fan for life...Keep typing away I want more to read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, I am on my second read of the book and I am enjoying it as much the second time around as I did the first time.

I don't normally read romance novels, and I've never watched any of the dating shows that have aired. I picked up the book on a recommendation from a friend. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I finished it in one day. I was fascinated by the main character. She is very easy to relate to. I would love to visit the Outback, so it was a great setting. I loved the interaction between the players, the staff and the bachelor. It was really fun to read.

I'm ready for part 2! Hurry up!

I'm not a big fan of Reality TV shows and this is probably why I enjoyed Outback hearts so much! I have often imagined the shenanigans going on behind the scenes and whilst it does appeal to me in terms of TV it made a really entertaining story. Interesting characters and and a good storyline kept me turning the pages.

Fantastic read from start to finish. Susan Stoker writes brilliantly, from the start you are hooked. Humour, romance and a HOT GUY what more can you ask for? I always say you know its a really good book when you say your going to read two or three chapters and at 3am you finish the book, well in fact it was 2.20am but you get my point and it was so worth it lol.

Sam and her friends decided to apply for a reality TV Show, thinking no more of it she suddenly gets invited to the auditions. Then in a very short time she finds herself in Australia with several other woman all fighting for the love of one man Alex. Alex never set out to be on a reality TV Show but thought it couldn’t be that hard, how wrong he was.

Sam is a strong character from the start; she’s beautiful, confident and funny. However the short time in the outback really eats away at her self esteem, surrounded by tall thin model beautiful women all fighting for the same thing and willing to go to all lengths to get it, they weren’t short of being bitchy, conniving and eating away at you in the hope you would crack.

Alex was Sexy, confident and wasn’t really looking for love but his friends had convinced him it would be fun. Neither Sam nor Alex knew at what lengths the TV Producer was willing to go to in order to make the TV Show a hit.

Sam never expected to be attracted to the Batchelor of the Reality Show but no matter how much she tried to fight it she was. Alex couldn't work out what it was about Sam but there was something about her he couldn’t deny.

What was supposed to be just a simple reality show in the Australian Outback turns into a dating reality show for Sam one of sixteen ladies vying for a rich rancher named Al. She never thought that she would actually be chosen for a reality show.

Sam had to deal with the other contestants and their diva ways. She knows she does not have a chance into making it to the end since she is not a typical model as she watches them flaunt themselves at Al. Surviving tasks thrown at them while most of the girls are wearing inappropriate clothes and heels, she maintains her jeans and sneakers attire while not really trying to win them.

Al was basically hoodwinked into doing the show since he was not looking for anyone. He is allowed to see the daily videos of the events even before he is introduced to them. Al finds everything to be a set up but finds he is a bit attracted to her and watches how she does not complain when she gets hurt from the tasks.
The one date they managed alone, they managed to kiss but the next day she was kicked of the show despite Al wanting her to stay. What will happen to them since all the contestants are forbidden to contact each other until the show is completely aired?

It’s a quirky story about love found on a reality show despite not being picked and how things are sometimes a set up even in real life.

This is a fun western romance down under style. It made me think of Tom Selleck in Quigly Douwn Under. If you can remember that movie, then you'll understand what a fun romp this story is. It includes an unexpected chance to be a on a reality show, Australia and the assorted fauna and wildlfe, and Aussie alpha males with charming accents. And plenty of romance. :)

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I started this book. From the blurb it looked like a cute funny little romance. A quick read on a quiet night. I couldn't have been more wrong.

From the opening page I was drawn into Sam and Alex's world. I found myself relating to Sam in so many ways. And of course rooting for her. I also found myself rooting for Alex. A nice guy who was apparently in over his head. The book has a few twists that I never saw coming (and don't want to spoil) but I love the book all the more for them.

Even though it was nothing like I expected this is great book. One I can't wait to recommend to my friends. I hope the next book is as good as this one.

Stoker's heartwarming story is the first of a three-book sequence built around relationships that develop on the set of a TV reality show. In "Outbreak Hearts," Alex is plopped down among a gaggle of lovelies vying for the attention of the bachelor. Set in Australia, Alex is exposed to icky situations in competition with catty rivals, filmed by scheming producers. She perseveres, overcomes, and finds love in unlikely places. Deft characterization and an absorbing story line will captivate readers, and keep them coming back for more.

This one was ok for me. The reality show aspect was meh... until you learned that Alex got to see everything with the girls. I liked that he saw them catty and bitchy, it showed the real side of them.

I hated how Sam got played, how the women treated her. About the only thing worse was how Alex was getting played. But he had his revenge in the end and it was great!

Sam becomes a reality TV show contestant, not realizing that it's going to be Bachelor-style. The contestants are all flown to the Australian Outback, where they're told that they'll be competing for the affections of Al, a rancher from Texas. To prove they have what it takes to be his wife, they do things like catch pigs, muck out stables, and more.

Although Sam thinks Al is attractive, she isn't in the mood for the kind of catty tactics most of the other contestants resort to. She figures it was probably an accident that she was chosen for the show and she'll get kicked off relatively early, so she's determined to do things her own way, even if the show's producer seems determined to do whatever he has to in order to get a drama-filled show.

Meanwhile, Al, who actually goes by Alex (the producer tweaks everybody's name to fit his vision for the show), is, unbeknownst to the contestants, given access to video of what the contestants are doing when he isn't around. He likes "Sammi" but quickly learns that this show isn't geared towards him choosing the person he really wants, but rather the person who'd make for the best TV.

I cataloged a bunch of this author's books once and figured I should eventually try one. The "Beyond Reality" books sounded the most interesting, although I'm not actually a reality TV fan. I maybe shouldn't have started with this one - I didn't remember this until later, but this was the one book out of the bunch I cataloged that had a typo (missing word) on the back cover. Unfortunately, the editing had issues between the covers as well. The most painful example was when the spelling of a character's name changed within a single paragraph.

This was definitely a "not like other girls" romance, with Sam as the only on-page contestant who wasn't horrible and catty. Supposedly there were a few other relatively decent people among the contestants, but none of them got any on-page appearances.

Overall, this just wasn't a good setup for an effective romance. Sam and Alex go on a grand total of one date, and talk maybe three or four times on-page.

Gripped from start to finish. I could so picture this as the reality behind a reality show, the editing cuts to show only what they want seen, the bitchiness of the contestants, the whole fake set up. I loved Alex and Sam, they were real and honest in as much as they were able to be while under contract. Sam was strong and determined not to let the others see any hurt and definitely not going to let any animal suffer for the cruel selfish actions of two. I must admit contract or not, I'd have told the organisers to stuff it. This was different and new, there are so many realty shows on tv now but this is behind the scenes, it was raw at times, it certainly didnt show many of the women in a good light but i felt it was probably as real as real life. There are an awful lot of fake women out there who just want someone rich to give them anything they want but dont care about giving back. I really loved them is story and the characters.

I’m trying to read everything written by this author and have now arrived at this early series. I’m so glad this was not the first book of hers that I read. I never would have read another. Sam ends up on a reality show after dares by her friends, suspecting she’d never make the cut, yet somehow, she did. Alex has a similar story for how he found himself as one eligible bachelor on this reality dating show. While I did like those two, most of the contestants and the producer are obnoxious, two-faced and selfish. The book seems to end when it really should have just begun. I’ll keep reading the series because of the author, but given that the series is based around reality shows (Beyond Reality), I don’t have much hope for it. I read the ebook on Kindle. 3/5

Series: Beyond Reality

Author: Susan Stoker

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Blurb: Sam never thought she’d actually be chosen for a reality show--but next thing she knew, she was whisked away to Australia. For a girl who has watched her fair share of reality dating programs (grew out of that, thank God) I can honestly say that everything that is portrayed in this novel is of my EXACT opinion. The fru-fru women who somehow fall in love with the supposed bachelor on the first night, the cattiness and 180 changes between when they are with the guy and when they are not, and the DRAMA!!! Oh my goodness, the DRAMA! It makes my head want to explode. *KABOOM* But enough about that, let's continue on talking about this book.

I think one of my favorite parts of this book is the fact that Sam (I refuse to call her Sammi) is so different from the other women on the show. She is kind of a breath of fresh air. SPOILER ALERT!! I thought it was so cool how she saved the fish in one of the challenges. I mean, I absolutely love animals and cannot stand to see one hurt, but I wouldn't have even thought of that.

Sam stood out so perfectly from the other contestants. It emphasized her being a main character, and it also kind of showed true reality. Because in those kind of shows, it really does seem as if all they want are pretty people in front of the camera. "Makes for good television."

Sometimes, though, I facepalmed a little bit regarding Sam and how she handled some of the situations. But then I couldn't really fault her due to the explanations she gave and the reasoning behind some of her choices. They just made sense.

And Alex. I loved his some of his reactions. And from the start, I just knew the two were perfect for each other. Just the way he reacted to a certain story of Sam's, which he was really not supposed to hear, in the beginning of the competition made their connection instantly click in my head. Seriously, thinking back on it, I am kind of still gushing over how perfect they are.

AND THE PRODUCER, EDDIE! Oh lord I do not like that man... But him I will not talk about. You'll have to find out about him all on your own.

While reading this story, my only complaint was that writing wise it felt a bit bare to me. A bit simple. And throughout the story, until the very end, I felt it was a good book, but it didn't really amaze me. HOWEVER, when I finished, and while figuring out what to write in my review, I went on Facebook and found out that the second book having to do with a competition in Arizona, briefly mentioned in this book, was out. I flipped! Until that moment, I had not realized just how much I had enjoyed this book. And now, I still cannot stop thinking about it and about reading the next one. I have to know what is going to happen with this new couple.

I just really love this book.

We can all relate to reality TV. More and more shows are popping up, so why not write about one. It’s a great concept! Susan Stoker created her own reality TV show on paper.

Sam (aka Sammie) and her friends applied for a reality show as a joke months ago. Wasn’t she shocked to receive a call back and interviews auditioning for an actual role? Simple, stubborn and fiercely independent Sam takes this as a challenge when she’s offered the chance to be on the show and travel to the Australian Outback.

Alex (aka Al) Sanders a rancher from Texas, while out with this friends, was approached for headshot and some profile photos. He plays along and then is asked to participate in a reality show to see if he can find his “soul mate”. He says sure, he doesn’t really have time in his life for a relationship so he decides to travel to the Australian Outback to start his life’s adventure.

We follow Al and Sammi, as well as the other contestants, through the shows challenges, harsh living conditions, being the outcast of the group and finding love.

I can honestly say this is the first book that I have read that didn't have sex scenes in every chapter. It was an amazing read. I read this in one sitting, it was so good. Captivatingly simple, this book impressed me, going back to the old school romance in the middle of the Fifty Shades of Grey world. Ms. Stoker’s writing is absolutely beautiful, with enough detail to leave your imagination intact but still complete her story.

It was a beautiful story that was unusual in concept and perfectly written. A true romance that left a smile on my face and fast became my go to book for a good romance recommendation.
I give this 5 stars.

This was a fantastic debut novel by Susan Stoker. It didn’t even feel like a first book to me and once I started it last night, it was very hard to put down.

I loved the premise of this story. With how popular shows like Survivor and The Bachelor and Bachelorette have become in recent years, I found myself drawn right into this. Getting to see the perspective from one of the women involved in it as well as that of the “man candy” that’s got to choose a woman at the end, along with the cattiness of the other characters, it was absolutely brilliant.

I had issues with Alex saying a few times that Sam wasn’t “beautiful” but it wasn’t enough to make me want to throw the kindle. I do believe he could have said he didn’t find her to be “sexy” or some other variation of that word and it would have worked better. She was beautiful. All 150 pounds of her and I am so glad that I got to read their progression, sort of like seeing a light bulb go off about Alex’s head until he realized just how awesome Sam really was.

Sam wasn’t a typical heroine, which probably made me love this book even more. She wasn’t some weak minded all over the place woman. She knew her own mind, didn’t let anyone walk over her (her worst offense was playing by the legal rules of the “show”) and she didn’t just fall into Alex’s arms. I loved her because she was real, both in the way she described and the way she acted. She was definitely someone I would LOVE to know.

The two of them together were perfect. Period. Which for me makes this the hard to find “magical romance”. I am so glad that I came across this book because it was worth the sleep deprivation.

What happens when you take two people, Alex and Sam, who get chosen for a reality show that they really don't want to be on? You get a great story with a couple that finds love amongst the most unreal circumstances. Susan completely nailed exactly how I've always envisioned a dating reality show to be behind the scenes. But she also showed how talented she is because she made me root for the couple. I completely got into it. I cheered Sam on as she was competing. I wanted to hug her when the cattiness was focused on her, when the evil director purposefully made her look bad. I wanted to cry with her when she had to leave Alex. They were falling in love and she had to go, knowing he would still be there with other women and he had to finish the show and choose one of them. Heartbreaking. How many women would be able to handle knowing that? Let alone seeing it when the show aired. Plus, they couldn't have any contact after she left. See, heartbreaking. But love always finds a way, right? Way to go, Alex! I love how Susan was able to weave this story together. How she made a reality show actually seem real. (You know what I'm saying, right?) I absolutely loved how comeuppance (awesome word) was given to the manipulator. I literally cheered at that. The twists and turns that were a part of this book kept me guessing about what would happen next. I wasn't sure how it would all play out and I loved not knowing.
