The Wolvers #5

Wolver's Gold

Rate this book
Finding gold where you least expect it…

Lone wolf and Special Investigator for the ubiquitous Eugene Begley, Challenger McCall is sent to the town of Gold Gulch to take care of a problem that might involve the exposure of the wolver community. For McCall, it’s like stepping back in time - a hundred and fifty years back in time.
Gold Gulch is a tourist attraction where the wolvers take their work so seriously, they continue their Victorian lives long after the tourists have gone home. Much like their 19th century counterparts, the women are overworked and underpaid.
Rachel Kincaid is one such woman. Exercising the only power she holds, she has become a wolver oddity; a spinster who refuses to mate. Why would she, when she already has to take care of the short-staffed hotel, its restaurant and her ne’er-do-well father? Angry and bitter, Rachel decides she deserves a better hand than the one she’s been dealt and finds herself drawn to the handsome new sheriff, Challenger McCall. Why shouldn’t she, for once in her life, enjoy the same freedom as the Soiled Doves on the hill?
Things get complicated when Rachel's wolf awakens after a long sleep and the town's women seem to awaken along with it. Papa's gambling debts leave them on the brink; the pack is at risk; and the women rebel. Oh, and don't forget the murders. If ever a pack needed rescuing, Gold Gulch is it, but as the girls up at Daisy's Bouquet point out, - A smart woman needs to look after herself!

Loved it, loved it, loved it. I don't have a bad word to say about this book. The plot was like a warm bath you could relax and luxuriate in. The lead characters are endearing. Challenger and Rachel are so different from each other, but work so well together. The supporting characters engaging, the time Jackie put into rounding them out was well worthwhile. This is a lot a book for your buck, and I thoroughly enjoyed how easy it was to visualise everyone and everything she described. I especially loved the modern-day history lesson. I love the Wolver Series, and this is by far my favourite so far.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!!!

The cover is yummy :) I love the cowboy and the moon and the wolf in the background :) This cover would definitely grab my attention :)

Okay this story was a western twist on the fabulous Wolver series. This story is very action packed, and you learned some new things about this fabulous world. I loved it all and especially the feisty Rachel who is sort of finding her way back to who she is and what a pack should really be. Challenger is sexy and made me laugh a lot. I loved when he was baiting Rachel.

I can’t wait to see where this series goes next because there are so many awesome communities and lots of possibilities for future stories to share with us. Jackie did an awesome job as always with her details and descriptions. You feel like you are in the story with the characters. She really is an awesome writer :) My mom loves her work too! I’m hoping I don’t have to wait too long for the next book :)

I highly recommend this series to all those shifter lovers out there :) You will thoroughly enjoy this world :)

I loved the heroine, she's compliant and downtrodden and slowly she gets angry, very angry at the injustice. The H is there for a reason, she misunderstands his position, so decides to make the best of the opportunity of loving him while she can. I really liked him, he's there on serious business but he helped her to laugh and play. The mystery was great, and a well rounded HEA for lots of wolvers. Loved it.

I’ve long since lost the taste for historicals and as for cowboys and the old west, they were never my cup of tea. But, I do enjoy Jacqueline Rhoades books and especially her Wolvers series so I went ahead and gave Wolver's Gold. DING! DING! DING! Winner, winner. Chicken dinner! I LOVED it! This is my favorite of the entire series.

The premise of wolvers running a town tourist attraction set in the 19th century, not only set but living their lives - walk, talk, dress, work - 24/7 even after everyone goes home. What a novel concept and quite the challenge. And speaking of a challenge. Challenger McCall…yummm-E. He’s sent from the ever ubiquitous Eugene Begley (who seems to have a talent of matchmaking) to investigate strange going ons in Gold Gulch. Now the heroine of this wonderful story is Rachel. A self-proclaimed spinster. And why wouldn’t she want to be one. Overworked and underpaid she doesn’t need a man to make it worse. That is until Challenger turns up and becomes the sheriff. Oh yes these two are very attracted to each other. Some of my favorite laugh out loud parts come from these two sparring. Language Mr. McCall! I’ve grown accustom to Ms. Rhoades wonderful secondary characters. The cast of characters here from the Soiled Doves to the omega are a complete delight. Everyone here gets a HEA, well almost. There are several unsavory characters that get their just rewards.

Of course It may sound like I have spoiled the story for you with the mention of the HEA. However, it is the journey getting there that makes this my favorite of the series. This wonderful addition to The Wolvers series works very well as a stand-alone. BUT, why would you want to deny yourself the pleasure of enjoy the whole series. Read them all but especially Wolver’s Gold.

I received this book from JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

I am never disappointed when I buy a Jacqueline Rhoades novel. This book, as each of her others, has something unique that sets it apart from other books published in the same genre. The setting for this book is present day in a town that lives as though it was the late 1800’s. The women have no pack rights, no personal freedoms. The leadership of the town/pack is corrupt. In comes the new sheriff who is expected to “follow the rules”; however, thanks to Mr. Begley, there is a new agenda. Among the cast of characters is a feisty redhead who has chosen spinsterhood (until the sexy sheriff comes to town), an Alpha’s mate who has let down her pack, several supporting characters who truly are “characters”, and the school teacher who, along with the sheriff and the redhead, help plot a revolution to restore the pack to the proper balance. This book, packed with humor and tender moments, had me laughing, crying, and quite a bit of sighing (sexy alphas, you know). I recommend this book to all adults (18+).

I have to say that I have read all of the Wolver’s books and I think this is my favorite one of them all. When I started reading it, I thought it was going to be a historical and then I find out that the small town makes their living by reenacting an old western town. Rachel was born in Gold Gulch and is tired of living a life of no choices. Then Challenger McCall comes to town to interview for the Sheriff’s job. And that’s when this book gets good. I really have enjoyed Jacqueline Rhoades books and will continue to get them. I recommend this to anyone who loves paranormal books and also it’s a good one if you love historical books, too. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Had to give this book 5 stars, not because I loved every minute of my marathon reading of this in just over 24 hours, but because it evoked such a strong reaction in me. I got very wrapped up in the story-line and characters, even needing to give myself little time outs when I would get so worked up over what was happening that I wanted to smack the characters up side the head. I did enjoy the book, wouldn’t have given it so many stars if I didn’t, but there were parts of the story that were not an easy read for me. I think that just comes from my personal history though.

Wolver’s Gold is part of a series, but would work nicely as a stand alone title. The rules of the world are the same, but the author has taken the series in a totally different direction in this book. Gave it a fresh and different feel while keeping it true to the world she created. I believe there is only one character that was in other books in the series, so feel free to pick this one up if you want to give the series a try. This is one of the few authors that I enjoy though, that I will buy anything she writes, even without reading the synopsis, and know I’m going to get a good read.

I was a little surprised with the direction this book went, started it without reading its synopsis, the story had a way different feel then the others. It almost came off with as a historical, but managed to keep one paw in modern times, then there was this western element thrown in too. Now I must confess, westerns and historicals are two types of books I will usually shy away from. Just not a fan most of the time. This one was an exception, though, the romance and paranormal elements overrode any historical or western elements to the story enough that it was able to keep my interest. So if you are a fan of any of the aforementioned genres (historical, westerns, paranormal, romance) you might want to give this one a go.

So what got me so riled up about this book. The men mostly. The pack in this book is stuck in the 1800′s and runs a tourist town where they can hide their pack and basically suppress women. The author explains in the beginning how this is what life was like to many women in the wild west, and I appreciated the forewarning and information she provided. It still got my hackles up and pissed me off how the men were treating the women of the pack as second class citizens with no rights. I grew up knowing men like this, hence my perhaps overblown reaction to a story…. Feel bad for my husband who had to live with me while reading this book. I’m glad the author tackled this subject though, cause even thought this was in the context of this is how it used to be, there are too many women out there in the world that this is their reality.

Alright, done with what I found difficult about the story. There was plenty to love about the story too. I LOVED Challenger. He was such fun and played the fish-out-of- water well as he got used to living in this piece of the past town. I also loved reading how he would get Rachel so worked up. They were a great match. The author teased me along for most of the book though. Kept me wondering if how they were going to end up together or if they would. There were moments where I wondered if it would all lead to heartbreak for Rachel. I also loved Rachel. Enjoyed watching her wake up to the reality she lived in. Such a transformation. So proud of the growth and changes she made. One other character I enjoyed was the school teacher, Washington (last name, the characters were so formal using Mr. & Miss all the time I forget his first name). I would so love to see him get his own story. The chemistry between him and Challenger was great, a fun bromance.

The story and plot moved at a good pace, there was plenty of fun situations, some steamy scenes, and on the edge of your seat action. It was a fun read that made you think, for the female readers a story to make you appreciate the world and society we now live in. I hope you give it a try and like it as much as I did.

I love the author’s style of writing and the stories just get better! Although this is a series, the books are stand-alone novels so it doesn’t really matter in what order you read them in. The romance in this book is between Challenger McCall, a badass law enforcer of Primal Law and Rachel Kincaid, the downtrodden daughter of a hotel/boarding house owner. The story takes place in Gold Gulch, a small ‘western’ town and as the name implies, the town found its origins in the gold rush. Although the story takes place in contemporary times, the town survives by being a tourist attraction in which the town functions as it did in the late 1870’s. Modern appliances aren’t necessarily banned but they cannot be used when the town is open to human tourists and wolver visitors. Normally I’m not a fan of romances set in historical eras but I found that the mixture of ‘olde worlde’ society clashing with the modern world, quite charming.

McCall works for Eugene Begley and has been sent to Gold Gulch to investigate the suspicious deaths and disappearances of numerous pack members over the last few years. Following the sudden death of the town’s Sheriff, who had liaised with Begley, McCall takes up the position which puts him in the ideal position to carry out his investigations. His attraction to Rachel is almost instantaneous, especially after he witnesses her beating a potential suitor with her broom! Jack Coogan and Barnabas Holt (the 2nd in command) both want to mate with her but Rachel is determined to remain a spinster, causing much upset to her father. However it’s pointed out to Rachel that as a woman, she is forbidden by law to inherit the hotel from her father when he passes so she must decide which one she will take as her mate and quickly. Both Jack and Barnabas stand to gain financially if they mate with Rachel but for different reasons and her decision will place may place not only her life, but her father’s life in danger.

Although both McCall and Rachel refuse to acknowledge it, it is obvious to anyone who sees them that they are mates and that attraction is enough to pull Rachel’s wolf out of her 15 year slumber! Along with her wolf awakening, Rachel also has her eyes opened to the changes that have occurred over the years. She slowly realises that there is something very wrong with the town and that many of its townsfolk are unhappy, especially the women. When she meets the schoolteacher John Washington, who joined from another pack, her rebellious streak is not only unearthed, but is actively encouraged not only by John Washington and McCall, but the Alpha’s Mate as well. The investigation into the deaths and disappearances of the wolvers leads them to uncover shocking facts about the pack hierarchy that puts all their lives in danger, but the most upsetting fact of all to Rachel is the realisation that McCall is an Alpha and as such, she can never mate with him.

I’ve loved the Wolver Series and didn’t expect this book, so I’m hoping that another one is in the pipeline!

Finding gold where you least expect it… In the modern world, it’s not easy to hide an entire Wolver pack in plain sight, but the Gold Gulch pack has found a way. By day, Gold Gulch is a tourist attraction, where visitors can experience life as it once was. But when the gates close and the tourists go home, the wolves come out to play. Or do they? When lone wolf and Special Investigator, Challenger McCall, is sent to Gold Gulch to take care of a problem that might involve the exposure of the wolver community, he finds a town that’s full of surprises, including a feisty red headed beauty who makes his wolf behave like a cub. Rachel Kincaid has become a wolver oddity; a spinster who refuses to mate. Why would she, when she already has to take care of the short-staffed hotel, its restaurant and her ne’er-do-well father? She’s tired of having her decisions made for her and being treated like a child and when she finds herself irresistibly drawn to the handsome newcomer, the seeds of rebellion blossom. Things get complicated when Rachel's wolf awakens after a long and celibate sleep and the town's women seem to awaken along with it. Papa's gambling debts leave them on the brink; the pack is at risk; and the women rebel. Oh, and don't forget the murders. If ever a pack needed rescuing, Gold Gulch is it. Together, McCall and Rachel scheme to bring Gold Gulch into the 21st century, both aware that the price of that freedom could cost them their love and their lives.

What an unforgettable tale. Rhoades combines the Old West with modernity and throws in some Wolvers to balance it all out. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the world of the Wolvers branches out a little bit with this one while remaining true to its roots. She takes the concept of Wolvers that we’ve come to love and turns it on its head, giving her readers a unique experience that, although following suit from the rest of the series, definitely stands out in the best of ways. Mystery and suspense combine with underhanded city officials to make this a story that you won’t be able to put down.

The characters in this novel make the enthralling story even more captivating. I won’t say too much or it’ll ruin the surprise but the main characters are right up there with my all-time favourite characters from Rhoades. Everyone in this novel is so well and naturally developed that they aren’t simply believable; they become real for the reader. The clash of time periods and ways of life, without the necessity of time travel, makes for some interesting moments as well. And perhaps we will get to revisit some of these characters again in the future. One can definitely hope so anyways.

Overall this was a phenomenal novel that can be read as part of Rhoades’ Wolvers series or as a standalone. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance with some supernatural on the side.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Wolver’s Gold is book five in The Wolver’s series by Jacqueline Rhoades, and she definitely has not cut any corners on quality as she churns out the stories. I immediately fell in love with both male and female leads in this book, as Challenger and Rachel had so much that was admirable and interesting in their characters. Challenger works for the rascally Eugene Begley conducting special investigations, and he is sent to Gold Gulch under cover to probe for information and evidence related to suspicious deaths in the wolver community. Rachel lives with her father and helps him run the hotel in the Old West style tourist town where the natives really are living in the 19th century. I have to admit that I do admire the evolution that Rachel’s character experiences throughout the course of the book, and I am really looking forward to discovering what is in store for the remaining characters in this series. I feel that readers who enjoy shifter or paranormal romance will definitely like the books in The Wolvers series, especially Wolver’s Gold!

"Wolver's Gold" is book five in the Wolver series. Rachel Kincaid has lived her entire life in Gold Gulch, where it's like stepping back in time. She decides to become Gold Gulch' s first ever spinster, that is, until the ruggedly handsome Challenger McCall walks into her life. Their attraction is undeniably powerful. Then her world, as confusing as it already is, becomes turned upside down.

I have never been a huge fan of werewolf novels, but because of the uniqueness of the story I knew I had to read it. Even though the story is set in present day, this group of Wolvers have decided to have the town set back in the Victorian era. I thought that was pretty neat, it came across as a reenactment setting which brought their little town the income they needed to survive. Rachel Kincaid is a strong female main character, she doesn't let the community dictate how she should live. Challenger McCall also fights for justice as any good sheriff should. But when there's deception among the pack, McCall and his friend John Washington will stop at nothing to bring down Barnabas Holt and his cohorts. This was an amazing action packed paranormal romance, with a mystery to boot. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I think you will too.

Every time I read a book by Jacqueline Rhoades I fall in love!

I just finished reading Wolver's Gold and hate that it had to end. The Wolver books are unique in shifter fiction and this 5th installment is the most unique of all. It is a wonderful combination of contemporary and western with a bit of "stepping back in time" thrown in. It is a romance, but so much more. Wolver's Gold is the type of book a person can really sink into. The characters written by Ms Rhoades, both main and secondary, are fully three dimensional. They have so much depth it is hard to say goodbye at the end of the book. I have found this to be a hallmark of all this author's books and I have read them all. I won't go into story details because it would take me to long and, personally, I hate reviews that basically retell the whole book. What I will do is recommended this book wholeheartedly . . . to anyone! Oh, if you are hesitant about buying this because it is from an Indie author and you are worried about the editing, don't be. The editing is great. Read and enjoy!!

Same as my Amazon Review...
I love the Wolver Series and this book was unique within the series itself, and to me every bit as engrossing and engaging as the others in the series. I love that we hear a little more of Eugene. This book is set in a Victorian Western re-enactment town in America. There is something definitely wrong in the pack and Eugene sends in 'an investigator' to uncover what is going on. Challenger is fun, mischievous and very modern, struggling a little with Victorian Etiquette. Rachel (Red to Challenger) is the daughter of the town's B & B type hotel owner. Totally use to living within the confines of the restrictive and male dominated Victorian West. They are wonderful together and they grow both as a couple and individually. There are a few twists, some tears and some surprises, a couple of great chuckles. I think that if you like shifter novels, a little history, sweet and real love scenes you will enjoy this wonderful book from Jacqueline Rhoades. Can't wait for the next in the series, hoping it might be John Washington's Story....

Going to the town of Gold Gulch to investigate the mysterious death of the sheriff, Challenger McCall finds more than he expected. Gold Gulch is a tourist town made up of all wolvers, humans that can shift into wolves. All residents live 24/7 in the Victorian time period as they run the town and local businesses. Rachel runs the hotel that is owned by her father, who unfortunately would rather gamble and drink instead of help with the day to day business.
Wolvers mate for life and it doesn't take long before McCall's wolver half takes notice of Rachel, who has decided she doesn't ever want to mate. Thinking she is happy being the only town spinster, her whole world turns upside down when her wolver wakes back up after 15 years of being asleep.
Working together to find out who is killing local wolvers plus changing the way the town sees women, Rachel and McCall continue to fall for each other both knowing it will not last, or will it?

Greed is a powerful thing

Living in Gold Gulch, where daily life is based on the 1800s has become a mundane existence for Rachel. While tourists come to the town to experience the ways of a time long gone, it's the town's folk especially the women who seem to be so out of sorts lately. Rachel is the daughter of the town's hotel owner and she works her fingers to the bone. She refuses to mate just to become the property of another wolver. That is until the new sheriff comes to town.

Challenger McCall is on a mission, to find out the truth about the high rates of deaths among wolvers within the Gold Gulch pack. Sent there by Eugene Begley to uphold Primal Law he doesn't expect to find his mate. But when he takes one look at Rachel taking a broom to a rude male wolver he is hooked.

Will the two be able to mate? Or will the mysterious deaths and missing pack money be their down fall? And where is the gold of legend?

Really enjoyed Jacquelines wolver series. This one had me laughing with the old talking and the style. So funny rachel and her way with challenger and his ways. Challenger been sent to a old town which is a tourist place but at night it's the wolves home and things ain't right there. Deaths and money but the pack are blind or can't see it so he is there to see what happening and John turns up too a school teacher but is he? He and challenger look into the files and find things. Read to see what they find and how rachel helps them it's a good read.
Can't wait to see if there More wolves books.

Although this was book five in the series, it felt like book one to me. It felt as this was the back ground to all the others. I want to dive into this story to live it. I was looking forward to the end yet I was sad when I got there. The love story between all the characters you fall for. Even though the main characters Challenger and Rachel were the Love Story, it felt like a community Love Story. Oh, the villains were well written as ruthless as can be. When I ready to read Jacqueline Rhoades I buy her books, no checking out from the library, I want to own them.

Another brilliant tale in this compelling series

I have yet to read anything I didn't like from Ms Rhoades. the story was unique even among this series. set in one of those reenactment towns, it's the story of a town within the town. not to mention all the secrets hidden within. Slowly peeling back the layers is like being a kid in a candy store. I highly recommend this book, and the rest in this series. plus her Guardians series is stellar....I look forward to the next in both of these series.

I love how you learn more and more about the Wolver's as Jacqueline presents the characters to you in the story. Here you are introduced to Challenger who in the beginning you have very little information about him but he grabs your attention, no demands it with his Alpha attitude. Of course things heat up when he meets Rachel and you are then given more of what type of a Wolver he is and well you will just have to read the story to see how these two take you through the journey of Wolver's Gold.

Wolver,s Gold

I enjoyed this author's version of a wolf pack living in the modern day but with old western values. it was fun to read the hero and heroines banter about language and proper behavior. I laughed often.

This book was a western wolf pack story with some greedy bad guys, a hunk of a sheriff, a prim a proper heroine and many sidekicks to round out the story.

I would not mind reading more about Gold Gulch if the author continued this book as a series.

Very slow and hard to follow with so many characters to try and keep track of. The story was based on the town of Gold Rush and gave little about the relationship between McCall and Rachel. Rachel's wolf talking to her had me rolling my eyes on more than one occasion. The ending was long and drawn out for the town and it's many characters, but way too rushed for the H and h.

Wolfers Gold

What a great story from start to finish. This story has it all testy female and two hot males. Fighting is incredibly exciting . This story kept me reading from the minute I picked it up until I finished the last page. But I do hope she goes back and finishes a certain part of the story.

I really enjoyed this 1 of the series.
I also enjoy how they aren't all about the same place.
This being set in today time but within a town set in the 1850's was a great read. Having them come forward in time while still participating in the pretence of living in the past for the tourists, was a great way to end the story.
