I’m strong—or at least, I want to be. I try to be. Oh, how I’ve tried. But life screwed me over. When I was at my weakest and lowest, desperate and alone, he found me. Robert changed everything. He gave me everything. He was every woman’s dream—rich, powerful, and charming. He made me forget the fact that he’s twenty-four years my senior. He made me feel alive, and for the first time in my life, I was content. Until I met Cooper—his son. And Robert? He began to change. I’m despicable. I know I am. I’m ashamed of what I want.
Things are never what they seem.
Greed. Lust. Lies. Murder.
Deception.
Please Note: This isn’t your typical love story. Things are messy. Characters aren’t always what they appear to be. Wrong decisions are made. If you’re not a fan of the darker side of love, this might not be the book for you. Read at your own risk.
Why do I do this to myself? Every time I see a book with an enticing and catchy blurb I hurry and buy it (regardless if there are any reviews) and almost always end up extremely disappointed. For me, the best part of the book was the synopsis, and whenever I was bored or frustrated or shocked (in a bad way) I reminded myself of the awesome blurb and what it promised and hoped the book would turn around. Nope. So while the premise was an intriguing one to start with, it was poorly executed and add a ditzy heroine in the mix along with events that you’d have to completely suspend reality in order to believe, this book totally missed the mark for me.
The story started out well: it’s obvious that even though the heroine Claire is extremely naïve, she is kindhearted and after getting kicked out of her foster home on her birthday, she’s practically homeless. Temporarily staying at her boss’s gym, she bumps into the much older and charismatic Robert and apparently both are attracted to one another (which I didn’t see – they were always so formal and stale around each other) so they pursue a relationship even though early on there were signs that Robert was unstable, controlling, and borderline psychotic.
This is where my problems with the book really began. I can understand the author portraying Robert as a sugar daddy to display his financial edge over the heroine but I absolutely HATE it when his wealthy status is used to justify why he was able to pull off some of his actions when in reality, none of it could be possible. Unless I decided to read paranormal or fantasy, I really do expect some semblance of realism present in my books or I’ll start nitpicking.
So with no job (because Robert got her boss to hire someone else) and no actual home, Claire is completely dependent on Robert. For the first time in their relationship, she starts to see Robert for who he might be and recognizes that she’s trapped.
Enter this book’s one saving grace – Cooper. A twenty-year old bad boy who clearly harbors resentment against his father, Cooper at first takes in Claire as a gold-digging bimbo but as time passes, he sees that she’s a genuine person. Though he acts like an asshole and lashes out, he has Claire’s best interests at heart and tries to warn her that Robert is not what he says he is, all of which she ignores even though internally she acknowledges there is some truth to what Cooper is saying.
From the blurb it’s implied that cheating may occur and even though there are the occasional forbidden kisses and touches, Claire does not jump back and forth between sleeping with Robert and Cooper (thank god!). But here is the part that really pisses me off: it is SO SO SO obvious she has a deeper connection with Cooper than she has with Robert. Their chemistry is so palpable and though both won’t admit it out loud, they care for each other. With Claire vocally saying she’s not with Robert just for the money, I honestly didn’t see a reason why she was with him then. Never in the book did she say she loved him and though both men have their faults, at least Cooper wants her safe and well and happy. Robert is only with her for appearances’ sake.
In hindsight, I should’ve known that this book would end dramatically and in a cliffhanger that practically begs the reader to pick up the second book. But you know what? If done well, I honestly don’t mind the cliffy if it feels like a vital part of the book. Instead, the message I got from this ending is that no matter how much you’ve come to care for a person who truly cares for you back, you STILL go with the guy who’s proven to be psychotic and worse just so you can drape yourself in wealth. The ending completely negates any of Claire’s statements that she’s not with Robert just for his money. It’s like feminism never happened. If you can tolerate an EXTREMELY dumb and vain character like Claire and want to enjoy 15% of the book and have the other 85% be extremely frustrating/boring/infuriating, this is the book for you. Otherwise, I highly recommend staying far away from this one.
I really did try....I was looking forward to this one and the synopsis sounded good....I'm sorry I just wanted to punch Claire in the fucking face for how stupid she is. Robert is a fucking creeper....and at this point I have seen very little of Cooper but I'm pretty sure I know where this is headed.
Claire has had a shitty life and just got kicked out of her foster home. She moves into an office above the gym that her boss lets her stay in after finding out she was sleeping in her car.
There she meets creepster Robert who begins his stalkingfriendship entrapment relationship which involves him showing up everywhere and basically taking over her life...He's rich though and shows her attention so that makes him perfect...BLAH!
So they are now "dating" and what better way for them to move forward than her to move in with him...but of course she hates him showering her with gifts etc etc. etc but she's willing to marry him...
SIDE NOTE: At this point I'm unsure if her and Robert have even had sex because they either haven't or it was such a minute detail that I overlooked it. That being said if Claire is still not throwing red flags she's a moron especially since her BFF Junie B.Jones (Not really but her friend's name is Junie and that's all I could think of)even say hey be careful bc this dude is shady.
And then she meets his son who she expected to be a little kid for some reason. Cooper is 20 something and accuses Claire of being a gold digging whore (which she basically is...LOL) And I don't know how the rest of the book goes but I'm sure it has something to do with Cooper saving her and them falling in love after getting away from psycho daddy....BLAH BLAH BLAH
Sorry Claire is just too stupid for me to continue.
This book is simply a winner because it held my interest from the minute I started to the minute I finished.
Just when Claire thought she could not have gone lower in life- she did. Her foster parents kick her out on her 18th birthday- she has absolutely nothing besides a ratty beat up car and no money.
Living in her car and bathing in the diners bathroom that she worked at- yeah life wasn't peachy. Life was hard.
Her boss takes pity on her and let's Claire sleep in his office he owns at the gym down the road from the diner.
So life seems up....? Claire should say that. Beats sleeping in a car?
When Claire meets Robert a 42yr old windowed Lawyer. She is surprised on how much he is interested in her.
Could this be true? A successful, older yet handsome man wanting her? What does she have to offer him?
It doesn't matter- he just wants her. Before Claire can say- I am broke properly she is living with Robert who buys her clothes, gives her a car.. Quits her job for her...
Life is looking up? Is Claire in heaven?
When Cooper, Roberts son starts messing with her head, telling her little things on why she should break up with him and run for the hills. Claire is skeptical....
If she leaves she will be worse off...
What happens when the life you want is Infront of you but it's more like a beautiful nightmare...
What's going to happen? What's the truth?
That's what we all want to know!!
I can't wait for the next installment of this series!
Ok – before I start my review, I am going to say that people will like this book and some people will not. It is not the writing or how the book is delivered. Some people just won’t be able to understand the main character, Claire. And for that I am truly sad for those people.
Claire has grown up in foster homes and really doesn’t understand what love is or what to expect in any type of relationship, whether it be friends, siblings or an actual relationship delving into love. Claire is thrown out of her last foster home when she turns 18 and refuses to lean on anyone for support. However, when she meets Robert, she tries to changes her ways a bit.
Robert is handsome older gentleman who takes a liking to Claire. He actually shows an interest in Claire, which immediately throws up flags for her. Claire may be naive, but she isn’t stupid.
Things get real interesting when they move their relationship forward. And here’s the only part that I have an issue with and sort of bugged me – Claire puts up fights about his gifts and spending money, but doesn’t really fight when he wants to make their relationship by getting married. However, it fits into her struggles of doing what is best for her or going back to have nothing. But add in Cooper, Robert’s son, and the pot really gets stirred. Claire can’t figure out if he is just messing with her head or if he’s truly trying to help her out.
All in all, K.A. does a fantastic job of weaving everything together. The heroine will be difficult for some to grasp, but Claire is no push-over. She’s just adjusting to a whole new life. All the characters and their interactions really make this book enjoyable and keep you wanting to know what happens.
I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
so I was looking forward to this a lot tbh. Well, most of that was cos there was a preview ch at the end of Fallen Fourth Down (loved it!) but yeah, so it sounded interesting and different. I love the idea of this story, and I didn't buy robert's shit for a second. Gods, I love cooper :) Ok, I read the author's note in the beginning, and let it slide for a while, but honestly? She didn't change one bit through the whole book, despite all the evidence and shit. There's a limit to how naive you can be, and she crossed the line fairly early. Still I continued reading it, hoping for that moment when she'd finally wake up. Didn't come. Honestly, this was a massive disappointment. You can't put off this thing for a whole freaking book. So... the storyline/idea was great, the other characters were fine... the mc sucks.... sorry. I just couldn't like her.
I read Deception the other night and read it all in one big swoop! I could not put it down, I loved Claire! She went through some pretty rough times growing-up, a lot rougher than most other kids yet she never gave up and that is how I fell hard for this character. She just kept on going when it got tough for her, she was that girl that we all wish we could be if we had to face some incredibly hard obstacle that life threw at us. She worked with some of the best friends ever who always looked out for her, they were much like family.
Robert was a handsome man who came along at the right time wanting to be friends with Claire. In a way, he boosted her self-appeciation in a way that made her fight harder for herself. It also made her forget that he was 24 years older than her. He treated her like a queen and always cared for her needs first. Claire was quite smitten with Robert, that is, until she met his sexy son, Cooper who was every girl's wet dream.
Cooper and Claire did not start out on good terms at all, as a matter of fact, the hated each other. As time went on, the tables started to turn and they became friends with a somewhat common goal. Robert did change though, and change he did. I cannot wait for K.A. Robinson to give us the second book, I am so excited for the Deception Series...so much in fact that I will need to get them all in signed paperback format!!!
What the Heroine does (being with someone for interest) has a name ...
But hey, this is a super Heroine... But he becomes entangled with an older man who maintains it.
And what hero (with a little self-love) would not fall in love with the girl that his father f*ck? Not forgetting that he listens to them every night. That feeds love a lot, of course.
Super romantic all (Irony)
Another "jewel" with an identical argument: Dangerous Temptations de Brooke Cumberland
(...) (...) (...)
I LOVE KA's books but this one may very well be my least favorite. I just can't get past the creepiness of the characters age difference I just can't. I understand the story line and know that it was a must for the story but UGH no no no just no. It also doesn't help that I hate Claire :sigh: I tried to like her I swear I did and we were warned in the beginning of the book by KA but nope I just can't. I only kept reading because of Cooper. Will I read the next one? Yes LOL I know crazy right? But I will! I want to see how it all plays out.
“Él va a destruirte. Te romperá hasta que no quede nada”.
Me gustó pero tampoco es para tanto. Cooper me agradó y no me agradó.
An eighteen year old foster girl falling for a 40 something year old man was not what I saw coming with this one. But as promised by the author, Claire is a naive girl who finds herself way in over head when it comes to Robert Evan and his son, Cooper. I'm not sure what's going to happen next, but I'm on to RETRIBUTION to see how this all pans out.
I really like Cooper, I can't stand Robert and Claire I like and don't like. Cooper is trying to help her and she's just so blind. Even for an 18 year old, I mean come on. I love Shelly, Bob, and junie. I will be getting the second book.
I enjoy all of her work so far this has to be one of the best book I have ever seen. For starters the characters were a lot more intimate with each other. For example when the character which is Claire fell in love with a guy twice her age gave her a better life and wasn’t suffering by living in the car and being thrown out from foster care I found that being really considerate until I noticed a change from when he was being very controlling and trying to change her so I knew from the start she wasn’t really attracted to him like she said she was. But as the book led on she met his son which is cooper and I knew they were going to get together some how. But my point being this book had a lot of ending amazing twists to it and I cannot wait to read the second sequel to it which will be retribution. K.A. Robinson
This story was short. Claire started off being so strong and than turned into naive kid that was broken. The whole story threw off creepy vibes and I kept wanting to say "Oh come on an eighteen year old girl isn't going to fall for the crap Robert is doing" Rather unbelievable. After saying all this I still want to read the next book to see what happens.
This book is about a troubled girl who finds kindness in an older wealthy man, he however has different plans to claim her as his. What starts out as slow sweet dating quickly turns to a possessive controlling relationship.
I wanna scream at this book!!! I loved it & hated it. That freakin cliff hanger!!! Why why why.Now we have to wait until next year.Really?!!Really?I'm pissed!!
On Claire's eighteenth birthday she leaves work to come home to find that her foster parents had changed the locks. After banging on the door they tell her that since she is now eighteen, there is no need for her to live there anymore. Despite everything Claire packs up her things and leaves. With no where else to go she is forced to stay in her "christmas car" - the cars nickname because it is red and green - and work. She works at a little diner, and her plan is so save every penny she can. But, when a work friend rats her out to there boss, Bob, he forces her to stay in his office at the gym. Claire agrees. On her first night there, she ran smack dab into a - older, by twenty four years - but good looking man that offers to show her around the gym. After seeing him a few more times she agrees to go on a date with him, but after a few dates he follows her. When he realizes she was staying in a gyms office he forced her to move in. Uncomfortable, but not being able to argue she moves in. With things escalating in there relationship fast, and a son - who happens to be older - who she can't seem to stay away from Claire doesn't know what is the right choice. Will she go with her gut and run away with Cooper? Or will she stay and be with Robert?
First off, let me just say that I love k. A. Robinson books. So digging through her stack of possible books I could order to read... I thought why the heck not with this series. When I was reading some of the reviews, I was a little nervous just because of how heavy of a subject this was about. But, figuring that I read fifty shades of gray and wasn't too bad off, I thought why the heck not. So with an open mind I picked up deception, and as always I was not disappointed.
Claire has been in and it of foster homes almost her entire life for some reason she's always been handed the short end of the stick. Claire never complains though because her current foster parents aren't abusive, in the physical sense at least.
Ugh! I can say that when her foster parents locked her out and pretty much told her that she wasn't there problem anymore I seriously wanted to punch someone! I mean she had absolutely no where to go! So Claire being the bad ass she is stays in her car. Which can't be comfortable at the least. Then one of her work friends finds her sleeping and ends up telling there boss Bob, and he asked to see Claire in his office. After refusing that Bob got Claire an apartment he demands she go the the gym he owns and stay there. I mean at least the guy was being nice and helping her out. On Claire's very first night at the gym she gets a brilliant idea to work out.
But, that's when she ran into Robert, the man who was twenty-four years older than her. And, after little convincing he was showing her around. Sadly, this is what started Roberts obsession. Claire was young, beautiful, and naive. While Robert was rich, handsome, and controlling. Once Robert caught Claire sleeping at the gym and forced her to move in with him I couldn't help but wonder, is this story going to turn out to be kinda like...
Or possibly...
Or sadly like....
But, I was actually suprised! When she moved in, she had a room all to herself. Claire was thinking that copper - Roberts son- would be younger maybe ten or eleven. Was she Wrong... One night after a little argument with Robert about controlling her life, she decide to go skinny dipping... That was a terrible idea. When she got out of the pool she felt eyes on her. She turned around and there he was. Although, at first she couldn't place who he was. After the revalation that he was in face Roberts son, Claire new she was a lot more attracted to copper than Robert.
When Robert goes out of town for business. Copper thinks that this is chance to get through to Claire. After making out with her and trying to explain to her exactly how much he really liked her. She refuses every time - which is so frustrating but I also respect it- and pushes copper away, but he won't stop trying. Faced with no choice seeing she was still going to marry robert as soon as he got back. He sat her down and showed her exactly why his dad was being followed by an investigator. Although I was rooting for Claire to be with copper not Robert, I couldn't help but think. "is this incest" or not? Because technically he was going to be her step son
Once Robert returns home, he Insists that the three of them all have dinner together. Claire didn't know exactly how wrong things were bound to go. So when she left the room to let the boys talk. She was crushed by what she herd. Sadly, by hearing what copper said he really thought of her made her decision final. She would be marrying Robert the next day. There would be no running away. The ending left me feeling a little like,
But, I know that all K. A. Robinson books all end with a huge clif hanger. And, this one was no different.
The author did warn that Claire would be annoying and naive and boy was she. But i could understand that they're people out there that are naive and to trusting because we see it all the time in the news about girls being lured away from home by men on the internet. Her behavior is believable and understandable as a young girl growing up in the system and wanting to be accepted and loved. And so with lack of experience and knowledge of men she was easily manipulated by Robert. So i would say to give this book a chance and find out if Claire grows up and learns from her mistakes and makes better decisions in the book ahead.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I worked with troubled teens for years and was able to empathize with her character Claire. She brought this book to life. I'm reading the 2nd book now and can hardly put it down. The author is going through a real life trial right now and my prayers are with her to come out strong. I hope she fights and wins this battle. My prayers are with you to hold your head high, win this battle you're in and make a great novel come out of your triumph.
This book is great. The strength in Claire makes you love her, the naive part makes you want to strangler her. This book makes you feel emotions that will surprise you. There is not a dull moment in this book. We’ve all struggled in our life, and going through it with Claire makes you feel her pain @;$ determination.
This had a good start and then a slow build to the kind of not shocking climax. That doesn't mean that I'm going to skip the next book, of course, because I need to know what happens! Claire is sure naive for being a foster kid, but the author does put that in a note at the front of the book. She's slowly catching up but it's killing me. I hope she finds her inner strength in the next book!
