This academy’s secrets could get you killed – if the poltergeist doesn’t get you first…
I thought going back to school would be fun. After all, we’re adults now – no angst-ridden teen dramas here – and we’re all law-enforcement recruits training to become State Troopers. Surely we’ll work together like professionals, right? Wrong.
One of my fellow recruits has it in for me. If I didn’t know better, I’d think I’d peed in his cereal or corrected his grammar in public, but I swear I’ve done nothing to deserve the daggers he’s throwing my way.
The problem is that he’s not the only one giving me grief.
The academy has a unique resident, a poltergeist who loves nothing more than causing havoc. What starts as harmless pranks quickly turns sinister and I’m left wondering just how far the spirit will go.
The deeper I dig the more I realise this academy isn’t just haunted, it’s hiding something far worse than ghosts and ghouls. And if I don’t uncover the truth soon, I might not make it to graduation…
Dive into this fast-paced urban fantasy series if you love mystery, humour, found family and a slow-burn romance.
Don't miss the other Portlock Paranormal adventures! The Vampire and the Case of her Dastardly Death – Prequel The Vampire and the Case of the Wayward Werewolf – Book 1 The Vampire and the Case of the Secretive Siren – Book 2 The Vampire and the Case of the Baleful Banshee – Book 3 The Vampire and the Case of the Cursed Canine – Book 4 The Vampire and the Case of the Perilous Poltergeist - Book 5 The Vampire and the Case of the Cozy Christmas – Book 6 The Vampire and the Case of the Hellacious Hag – Book 7
I love the overall premise of this series but the execution can be atrocious! Each of the books hold an incredibly interesting plot and mystery but there are so many holes, things that don’t make sense (see my notes for just one example) and absolutely absurd actions by the main character. It’s a conundrum, I tell ya! Should I continue reading or give it up? That’s the questions after every.single.book!
And, this specific book held more than most. It rides the surface to the point of exhaustion and Bunny (FMC) STILL acts like a 14 year old rather than a grown adult. Maybe it is the writing overall that makes this seem much more like a very young adult story…. Yet the situations, ages, and developments are completely adult focussed. See? It doesn’t make sense! And that drives me crazy!
Really enjoyed this episode in the fast paced and fun Portlock series (and apologies that it took me so long to finish it). I love the police academy conceit in this book and it blends really well with the overall setting (Alaska). The mysteries are generally fun too. I absolutely see why these books appeal to Urban Fantasy fans that don't want much drama or hard hitting topics. The unfortunate, for me, sidenote is that they aren't really cosy or gritty so the storytelling is a bit uneven, and the characterisation - especially of side characters - can be a little shallow. I never really feel like the characters are in jeopardy, however, I think that's the point; you go in knowing everything will turn out alright. Anyway Bunny is raising hell while trying to graduate he police course and there are nefarious doings afoot. Good fun for UF fans.
A- another pretty good adventure. This time it’s away from the town as Bunny and Sidnee are off to the academy for training. However. Something is rotten at the academy with past disappearances, a poltergeist and possibly more. Bunny and Sidnee are tasked with investigating the shenanigans at the Academy and discover a dark underbelly of crime and betrayal going back years. With targets on their backs, and some familiar faces for backup, they must find out who is behind all the disappearances before it’s to late
I really, really can’t get enough of this writing duo because I love, love, love Bunny, Fluffy, Sydnee, and really all of the characters, so I was so happy to be back in this universe. I immediately started this as soon as I got it, and poor Bunny is bored at police school especially since she has an eidetic memory, but she has plenty else outside of classes to entertain her including a ghost, a conspiracy, trying to figure out friend from enemy, and last but not least a conspiracy. This is a different sort of mystery than the other books but no less fun. I loved to see Bunny and Sydnee’s friendship take front and center, and this was a wonderful way to jump back into their world. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Enjoyed and recommend this book. In this book Bunny and Sidnee go to law enforcement recruits training to become State troopers, but of course things don't totally go as planned
All of Heather's and Jill's books are addictive, but this is next level compulsive addiction! I can't get enough. Each time I think I'm going to burst with love for these characters, they take another piece of my heart, they've claimed it in it's entirety! And I didn't think I could adore Connor more than I do, but there you have it, it's thanks to the genius storytelling of these authors that I do! Boy did they send me on a wild goose chase, the red herrings through me off course and when I finally got to see whodunnit, well shoot, it was a loud 'NO!!!', I was gobsmacked!
Bunny had Sidnee are in the Academy, finally getting their "stripes", they'll be fully fledged detectives once they've graduated but...yes, there's a but, things aren't as cut and dry as they appear. Firstly there's the obnoxious, "I will make your life a living hell" asshat called Theodore, who, for some reason, has it in for Bunny and Sidnee. Next up is when strange things start happening and it's all pointing to a Poltergeist. Gee whiz did I feel the frustration from it! His message is unclear, his motive less so, leaving Bunny to decipher it all. What she does, is hardly a walk in the park!
My goodness do these authors craft stand out characters! Distinct, with their own voice, well thankfully Aoife WAS able to keep her literal voice down, she IS a Banshee.. how cool to see her appear again! But seriously, besides the drool worthy Connor, who's hands down a girls dream guy, the likeability of Bunny, who's grown not only in her abilities, her inner strength gets firmer and stronger with each book, the sass of Sidnee, the awww effect of Fluffy and Shadow, the introduction and fullness of new characters are felt from the onset. As usual, there's a lot going in, snippets of revelations are strewn throughout, painting a bolder picture, outlining the characters superbly. Some of Sidnee's past is touched on and gosh what a horrid experience! Sidnee is character that has so much more to reveal, she's 'hidden' in her niceness, except when she's in full blown mermaid mode, then heck, stay out of her way! Good golly did my heart ache for Reggie, I could just sob at his situation, whether he's Fluffy or Reggie, he draws our a protectiveness within me, I'm with Bunny 100%. Shadow is evolving before our eyes, not, dinkum! I'm astonished at his prowess, the WHAT he is is burning a hole in my brain! I can't wait for that to be divulged, I'm sure I'll fall right onto my butt when it is.
An emotionally charged read on many levels, moving me to tears a few times. This is what these authors achieve, they have me in the palm of their hands, pulling, tugging , squeezing, I'm completely at their mercy. An incredibly fast paced and immersive read, I only came up for air once I'd finished it and then my adrenaline spiked yet again from that ending! Yes, manipulate me Ms Harris and Ms Dolbeare, I'm lapping it up like a thirsty puppy! ALL of it! The drama, the mystery, the intrigue, the unpredictability, the world building, the romance so smexy yet clean, the impressive banter and humour, you name it , this book gives it! This book was 50 shades of AWESOME!
“The Vampire and the Case of the Perilous Poltergeist” is the fifth book in the new “Portlock Paranormal Detective” series co-authored by Heather G. Harris (“Glimmer of the Other” series) and Jilleen Dolbeare (“Splintered Magic” series) and was brought forth as a wonderful surprise for the MANY fans of the series. Set in Alaska, honestly one of the USA’s most unique settings, it brings lore and mythology, the supernatural, and whodunit mysteries to life with well-rounded characters, delightful humor, gorgeous descriptions, just enough romance, and twists you’ll never see coming! I cannot possibly recommend this book more!! 12/10, highly recommended!
Welcome to Portlock, Alaska. A small town, on haunted ground, that for all the “peds” (that’s us, the normies) know is a ghost town and completely abandoned. But look deeper, embrace your inner shifter, realize your nascent vampire, summon your waiting witch and you might just be able to step through The Barrier into Portlock proper! A town where supernats and peds (those in the know, of course) live in harmony, doing their thing day-to-day, living by the moon and by the sun, logging, fishing, and enjoying the life only Alaska can offer.
If you walk around town, you’ll find it really IS a ghost town, well, it has the spirit so to speak. You might just happen upon the Nomo’s office (he’s like a sheriff, but far more Viking) down the way from the hardware store. If you walk through the door, you might get to meet Sidnee (mer)maiding the desk, or Gunnar, the mountain of a man who wears the Nomo’s badge with pride. If you wait a minute, and it’s after dark, you might even run into a recent British transplant to Portlock, a former London high society rich kid, and all-around kickass vampire, Officer Bunny Barrington, “The Fanged Flopsy” herself (much to her chagrin).
Despite having only been a part of the supernat world for the last few months, Bunny’s hit the ground running and never looked back! Bunny and Sidnee have been sent off to the mainland enrolled in the Alaska State Trooper Academy, it’s time to start working toward that detective’s badge! This is set to be the longest time Bunny’s been away from Portlock and her found family since she landed in the Nomo Office’s lap some months ago, and she’s absolutely homesick. But needs must, and Bunny and Sid need to get their certs to strengthen the Nomo’s office and broaden their horizons. But Alaska’s never been normal, so why should its police academy be? For the last 10 years, chunks of supernat recruits have been enrolling in the program, helping the to keep safe and on the right side of the law.
Needless to say, Bunny’s got her paws full with her training and dealing with the other recruits. Missing home, Connor Mackenzie, and especially Fluffy and Shadow her well-loved fur-babies! But when things start going bump in the daytime, and strange winds begin happening INSIDE the building it seems that the Academy’s ghost-in-residence has gone full poltergeist! Watch out for flying chairs!
I received a free copy of this e-book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
seriously addicted to these characters and universe
Rating: 5⭐️
In The Vampire and the Case of the Perilous Poltergeist authors take Bunny and her best friend, Sidnee outside of Portlock to the Alaska State Trooper training academy for training and certification.
It’s a mixture of hidden paranormal cadets and normal human beings with all the same bigotry and prejudice that people face in social situations. Except that the paranormal recruits are expected to hide their abilities from their classmates and staff and still get their certificates. A difficulty in dealing with some bullying recruits.
I really loved this story and appreciated the many well developed storylines that further broadened the series arc mystery and allowed many of these characters to deepen their relationships and potential for their own powers.
Bunny’s character is growing stronger with each case. She’s discovering new powers, allowing herself to become closer to the people she is now considering her “found family “, and her own powers are being expanded into a new level of magic. Sidnee, the shifter whose friendship and trauma has been so much a part of Bunny’s story, is a big part of the story too. She’s struggling still with past events but trying hard to find her way through.
Without specific details, Heather G. Harris and Jilleen Dolbeare use a poltergeist, a truly poignant piece of work here, to bring another bit of this series back into play. Outstanding storytelling!
And of course, I have to mention Fluffy and his own personal struggles with his transformation ability or lack thereof. Love Fluffy and that enigma Shadow.
Another fantastic book! I’m so addicted to these characters and world.
Highly recommended!

The Portlock Paranormal Detective series:
The Vampire and the Case of her Dastardly Death, a prequel. The Vampire and the Case of the Wayward Werewolf, Book 1. The Vampire and the Case of the Secretive Siren, Book 2. The Vampire and the Case of the Baleful Banshee, Book 3. The Vampire and the Case of the Cursed Canine, Book 4. The Vampire and the Case of the Perilous Poltergiest, Book 5. The Vampire and the Case of the Cozy Christmas, Book 5.5. The Vampire and the Case of the Hellacious Hag #6 The Vampire and the Case of the Malevolent Mermaid #7 - July 3,2025
I liked the change in location with Bunny and Sidnee going off to the State Trooper Academy to formally learn professional policing techniques and get duly licensed.
While there they meet up with a Poltergeist (who honestly acts like Peeves from Harry Potter at first) who needs their help in uncovering a gruesome crime.
Again, this was light-ish and reads very quickly.
I didn't rate this one higher because as much as I like the continuity as the series goes on, the many dangling issues without any real resolution is starting to become a bit much. There are a lot of balls in the air still left over from previous cases.
We have the drugs that are being used to experiment on vamps (the mystery from the 3rd book), Altho they kinda sorta stopped it from coming in, the perpetrators all got away, we have the cryptid monster beyond the magical barrier protecting the town that has been in jeopardy of falling and we all know it is a matter of time, we got introduced to the fact that Bunny is part of some prophecy (yeah I wasn't thrilled with that, I've come to hate prophecies in these sorts of book), and now this one which is also part of a larger conspiracy where the immediate perpetrators are caught but the main people are still out there.
Added to that one of the reasons the crime in this book was able to continue to happen was because of siloed communication. Now that everyone knows what is happening, it would have been nice to have gotten an epilogue or a scene or something that indicates there was some big meeting where the Supernaturals from different towns all agreed to share important information going forward.
As much as I like Bunny as a primary narrator, the author does tend to narrow focus on the things that are important to Bunny in the moment. But given what the series is trying to set up, there needs to be some attention on a wider focus and more strategic planning. I kinda feel like when something finally gets moving toward closure on one or two things, it'll only be because Bunny wants it to or it'll be time because it will because Bunny herself is in danger.
Anyway, I do still like the series but I hope it picks up and gives more answers and checks off some things on the list before things get too muddy.
ONE OF THE BEST PARANORMAL SERIES OUT THERE! 5+ Stars ❤❤❤ This series has became an all-time favorite of mine! Two authors that were unknown to me that decided to combine efforts and write this exciting, CAPTIVATING series that is truly a GEM in the paranormal world! I am now on book five and all I want is to have a permanent membership to this amazing, fun and original series and hope that there will be many more books to come. Each book of the series centers around the FMC Bunny (yeah, don’t let the name fool you!), and a new mystery or case to be solved. Bunny, is a new made vampire who is hiding from her past life and 100 years of servitude, which brings her to a small Alaskan town filled with other supernatural beings. There, she works in the police department as a new investigator, together with her very wise dog “Fluffy” and her new feline pet “Shadow”, as well as other very colorful secondary characters. In this installment she is attending the Police Academy in Sitka with her colleague from work Sidnee, so that she can become a Detective, when she suddenly encounters a woozy of a mystery to solve. It is a wild and fun ride seeing Bunny trying to resolve this new mystery and thanks to her wit, intelligence, humor, determination and all around amazing personality, she manages to get to the bottom of the issue at hand and catch the bad guys! This is a light, fun read, filled with mystery, action, humor (that will make you laugh-out-loud), and romance. Even though the police case gets resolved by the end of each book, there is a progression to the story and to Bunny herself, who is also somewhat of a mystery (more than a regular vampire should be). Trust me when I tell you that this series is a ONE-OF-A-KIND and so worth reading!!! High praise to both authors for their imagination, talent and superb writing skills. As an avid reader of many genres, I don’t get easily impressed anymore, but this new series has me as giddy as a kid in a candy store!!! I really do hope there will be many, many more books to come! Highly Recommended 🧡💜💚
Bunny and Sidney are at the detective training program being held at the Alaska State Troopers training grounds in Sitka, Alaska. While they are both thrilled to be getting officially trained, they are homesick for Portlock and their friends.
Their cohort of supernats is only about eight amongst the class of twenty trainees, but it turns out that the entire class is only about 40 people, so they are well represented. Bunny and most of the females are bunking together as are the male supernats. This makes it convenient for private communication strategizing and sneaking out for extra lessons.
Classes are brutal although not so much for Bunny with her eidetic memory. Jones, a male student, gets teased a lot and is picked on by the class bully, Thorsen. Bunny and Sidney decide to fight back on Jones's behalf. Thorsen just becomes more enraged with every encounter.
Bizarre things begin to happen, even for the supernats. When they mention to the two instructors who are on their team that Thorsen is out of control, they find out his file is sealed, and his Dad is someone “important”. And, they are being assigned MIB instructors. They are the alphabet agency for supernats, The Magical Investigation Bureau, and a “Boogeyman” every child is threatened with if they don't behave.
Something is very wrong at The Alaska State Trooper Training facility. Poltergeist activity begins, nearly killing students. During squad competitions, students go missing. Bunny and the gang find out that there are missing files from the instructor's desks.
A call for help goes out to Portlock. Connor McKenzie brings Fluffy and Shadow but will they arrive in time before the troop of armed MIB? Will the missing students be found and avenged? Will Bunny graduate and become a Trooper? The answers are available only to those brave souls who will read the book. Mwa Ha Ha Ha!
Adorable, awkward heroine British Bunny Barrington is creating a home for herself in the wild Alaska as part of the Nomo police force as a junior detective. She is more in training as she is finding her way in this new job and adventure but Bunny has special skills as a vampire and an incredible memory.
Bunny also can piece details together and think through crime scenes in fascinating and unusual ways, and part of what makes the novel so intriguing for me is to understand her observational skills at work. Along with help from her also supernatural special K-9 dog/person/young person Fluffy and her lynx kitten Shadow who has magical powers, she is one truly magical force to be handled with care.
Her Nomo boss Gunnar takes the next step to nurture Bunny and her police force bestie Sidnee on their progression and education for the police force, so he sends them both to the police academy to complete a short 6 week course. It does involve a lot of study, physical education and passing the exams, but nothing prepares them for the poltergeist that haunts and terrorizes the grounds.
The activity increases along with harassment from other academy attendees. The tension worsens until one of the supernatural friends is kidnapped and it’s a race to find them before they are murdered.
The action is exhilarating, and the writing is so good these gals should be writing for the movies! (Their series are certainly better than a lot of the movie franchises we’ve seen lately 🙄) When the villains are revealed it is one heck of a shocker!! And immensely satisfying when Bunny, her sweetheart Connor and the underdogs who were hogtied like prize selections for the country fair were able to lend a helping hand and some supernatural justice richly deserved!
A terrific book and an absolutely worthwhile read for a Sunday afternoon 💕
Another winner from writing duo Harris & Dolbaire. As much as I enjoy the town of Portlock and all the characters there, it was delightful to have a new setting and some new characters to get to know as Bunny, Sidnee , Connor, Fluffy and the mysterious magical Shadow uncover plots, foil kidnappings and solve a murder or two. Happily our new setting is temporary as Bunny & Sidnee are at the Polce Academy undergoing training to become qualified detectives. Although I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Danny in the future. As part of a small cohort of paranormal recruits with only the Academy head and one instructor in the know, Bunny & Sid have to carefully temper their paranormal speed and strength so the normals don’t discover them. Much to Bunny’s delight the paranormal recruits also attend a specialist class on policing the paranormal disguised as remedial classes. As much as Bunny loves her supernatural class she doesn’t enjoy having the obnoxious, bullying Senator’s son Theo (who took an instant dislike to her) think she needs any additional help. Theo is a nightmare but no matter what rules he breaks he only ever gets a slap on the wrist which frustrates Bunny no end. But her quest to have Theo show his true colours and get kicked out takes a back seat when the school poltergeist suddenly ramps up its activities to dangerous levels. After calling in Aoife to mediate, Bunny discovers the poltergeist is trying to warn of terrible danger at the Academy and sets out to solve the mystery uncovering something much bigger than she could have imagined.
I received an ARC but all views expressed are my own.

Another amazing book in the Portlock series! Bunny and Sidnee are away at the Trooper Academy so they can finally be “official". Things are going well aside from one of the other recruits being hostile towards Bunny and Sidnee for no reason. But with the appearance of a new instructor, a poltergeist has started causing trouble for the students and the Supernats must figure it out before their secret world is revealed… or worse! I love every book in this series and this is no exception! It’s Bunny and Sidnee on their own, away from Portlock for a lot of this book. Bunny is homesick and missing all the excitement of Portlock. But as soon as she thinks that things pick up with the poltergeist. Lucky Bunny! Bunny is such a fun character. She is always positive and obviously loves a good mystery. She never hesitates to right into the thick of things. And I love how manages to ruffle some feathers just by being her naturally chipper self, killing them with kindness. She is learning to trust her gut and only those close to her. And we get to see more of Sidnee in this story as well! She is a fantastic friend and detective in training! And she is definitely the kind of friend who will help you hide a body! Fluffy and Shadow get to show off their skills helping solve this mystery as well! This book is a case of its own that is solved, yet still part of the larger picture. The more they uncover here at the Trooper Academy, the more questions they have going into the larger issue at home! I was so excited to get this surprise book release and it was perfect timing since I was missing Bunny and the gang! The humor is perfect and the mystery keeps you guessing! I never would have guessed that ending!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily please note there may be spoilers!
Join Bunny and Sidnee at the Academy where they are in officer training – I have literally just finished page one and my mind is already envisioning it as a Police Academy film!
Ok so now that I’ve finished reading it, I have to say it’s a paranormal police academy crossed with horror vibes.
The girls are in the middle of their course when a Poltergeist begins to disrupt the class, and Bunny is soon trying to figure out what it wants, with the help of her young banshee friend from back home as an interpreter. Soon it’s not just the Poltergeist’s worries they are looking into, but the disappearance of a previous recruit before finding evidence of pulling the other supernatural trainees together to investigate what happened to him and who they can trust when with Petty the Poltergeist‘s help they find some alarming evidence of the Academy being used to track down supernatural’s and experiment on them and not the financial embezzlement they thought was going on.
The situation soon escalates with some students going missing and others revealing their real reasons for attending the Academy. But if you wish to find out if Bunny can find her way out of the sticky situation she unfortunately finds herself in, you’ll just have to find out for yourself.

I am always thrilled to pick up a book by Jilleen Dolbeare and Heather G Harris because I love losing myself in their cleverly crafted stories. I know they will entertain and enthrall me and keep me happily turning pages.
The characters are some of my favourites to spend time with. They are funny, caring, strong, flawed and sometimes morally grey. That last is possibly new but I like how they balance carefully on the line of law enforcement v's vigilantism to ensure a bad guy or two gets their come-uppance.
The story launches right into a new setting with challenges galore - and these authors write that suspense so incredibly well! Pacing - perfect! Peaks and troughs in action and slice-of-life - again, perfect!
Fluffy and Shadow have substantial roles in this book and that is fantastic. Their magic is mysterious and dangerous and the secrets surrounding them are eeked out so skillfully that I am hanging on to every word, looking for more hints.
This is a wonderful series and each book meets the very high bar for reading satiafaction that Ms Dolbeare and Ms Harris have consistently proven they can achieve. Want authors you can trust? Here they are!
*I got an arc from Heather & I sub to her Patreon*
CW: discrimination, discussion of parental death, learning about a character having a (deceased) family member who has committed multiple murders and SA, medical experimentation
Bunny & Sidnee are off to the State Trooper academy to get their certifications where they face their hardest challenge yet: homesickness (just kidding but it was a new experience for Bunny). When the academy's resident poltergeist gets violent, the duo are thrust into a thirty-year old investigation that risks the safety of all supernaturals...
"Perilous Poltergeist" was a lot of fun! While other beloved characters do appear in the story, it was truly excellent to focus on the Bunny/Sidnee relationship. I loved seeing their friendship away from all of the interpersonal Portlock dynamics. Sidnee really gets to shine here in her own right and showcase why Bunny isn't the only one Gunnar sent to get certified.
Also Shadow is perfect and deserves 18 million books.
While the central conflict to "Perilous Poltergeist" is resolved, the underlying conflict of the entire Portlock series is yet to be unraveled.
Today I discovered that being chosen for ARC has downsides.... along with destroying my nails, this book made me miss my bus-stop! So don't read it when travelling is dependent on you pushing a button😅
Bunny is off on another adventure & this time in Book five, she's going back to school (minus the teen angst & acne) alongside Sidnee & a few other supernat trainees, they've got to pull their punches & hide their fangs to keep the Other secret from their human Trooper classmates.....in true Harris & Dolbeare style there's multiple mysteries, plot twists & "Dude!! Really?!" Moments, along with some heartwarming homesickness, found family, cackles of laughter & some geeky Easter eggs.... I mean seriously what more could you want!?! Well obviously not missing your stop & a destroyed manicure* 🤣😅😂
I'm massively looking forward to seeing what Bunny & co do next (do I hear "Christmas novel"??)
**yes, my reviews normally feature a complaint about my poor nails being bitten to stubs so I don't really mind a destroyed home manicure when the plot is this absorbing x
Bunny has become one of my all time favourite MFCs. Her understanding of what she is capable of grows further in this book…and she puts her talents to good use!
Bunny and Sidnee are at the academy to graduate, but trouble seems to find Bunny wherever she goes. The twosome find they have plenty to investigate, lots of suspects and ghostly activities to drive their investigation too. This book mostly centres around the 2 girls, but a few familiar characters are involved and some new friends too. They have to work out who they can trust, as so many people aren’t all that they seem. I’m so happy that Fluffy and Shadow both got their chance to shine in this book, that we learn more about Sidnee and who wouldn’t appreciate the opportunity a little more Connor in their life?!
Over all, this was an action packed storyline, with our girls barely getting a moment to themselves. Lots of plot twists and turns, to keep you intrigued and invested, and a real page turner. I can’t wait for more and to find out just what is going on in Portlock, while the girls are away.
Wow wow wow wow wow. 🤩 Every time I think Harris and Dolbeare have come up with the best Bunny story, something happens. Aka a new book is released.
In Perilous Poltergeist, Bunny, our half-vamp cop, and Sidnee the mermaid, are at Police Academy in Sitka. While it was hard to be away from Portlock for a book, it was great to get a bigger picture of how the supernats fit into this world.
And the picture? It’s not good. There’s a poltergeist at the academy and even the humans are getting spooked. It’s up to Bunny and Sidnee to uncover what is happening.
We get some emotional looks into Sidnee’s past in this book, and I just want to give her a hug. Speaking of characters I’d hug, I’m so glad Fluffy and Shadow also got to come visit the academy. Those animals are definitely a great duo, and so very helpful. Of course, where Bunny and Fluffy and Shadow are, Connor isn’t far behind.
This book has it all: animal sidekicks. Best friends. Strong females. Kissing. Conspiracy. Hauntings. And more. Everything just ramped up until it literally became unputdownable.
I just love this series! This new installment was fantastic!! Bunny, a newly turned vampire, is still trying to figure out her place in this new world. She has now adopted a lynx kitten (or she thinks it’s a lynx with some extra super special skills) to go along with Fluffy, her faithful companion and protector that she previously adopted before she arrived in Portlock, Alaska. After training by the local Nomo as a police officer she has decided she wants to become a detective and continue her career path and protect her new home town. As luck would have it she has been accepted to go to the academy with her co-worker, who just happens to be a mermaid, to train to fulfill her dreams of becoming a detective. Upon arrival things just start to go downhill. First there’s the poltergeist, stirring things up, then rumors of previous cadets going missing surfaces, and now one of her team is missing. It is up to Bunny, Sydnee, Connor - her hot vampire mentor/boyfriend, to solve this problem before dead bodies start to pile up.
Bunny is at the Academy with Sidnee to get their detective shields. It’s not quite what she expected especially since one of the other trainees seems to have it out for her but she has no idea why. There is also a poltergeist roaming around who seems to be getting more dangerous each time it appears. That means Bunny has to try and figure out what’s happening. Calling on her banshee ghost friend, she finds out the academy is being threatened. With the help from some of her fellow recruits and Connor, who has brought Fluffy up for a K-9 demonstration, Bunny digs deeper and finds some interesting things. This book has action, supernaturals, humour, romance and villains. Shadow, the supernatural being that appears as a baby lynx, has a more prominent role in this book. I’ve been waiting for this book to come out and read it as soon as I got it. Unfortunately, I now have to wait again. This is a fun, quick, easy read and is part of a series that I definitely recommend.
This was a surprise release and what a fantastic surprise it was. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it as much as the preceding books because it wasn’t based in Portlock and wouldn’t have all the favourite characters but I loved it. There were some of my faves in there and it was (as has been throughout this series a great story with brilliant humour throughout. While it is (mostly) light hearted there is definite character growth which I enjoy seeing as a series progresses rather than the character being the same in the first book as the 3rd, etc and you really see that in this series. It does tie in to the previous books well and I’m looking forward to the next book which is out early next year. I really enjoyed getting to see what happened at the academy and how it went as it would have been really easy to miss that bit out in the storyline but I think it definitely adds to the overall storyline.
Bunny and Sidnee have enrolled in a special training program in Sitka that will allow them officially to become detectives back in Portlock. But there are fishy things going on there, including an upset poltergeist wreaking havoc and stories of supernaturals who disappeared from the academy in the past. Bunny and Sidnee don’t know whom they can trust, so they try to investigate the problems themselves, all while trying to keep their supernatural status secret from humans.
The two enlist help from Connor, Fluffy, and even Shadow gets in on the action to find out what has the poltergeist so angry and how they can help, of course putting themselves in danger. Getting to see Bunny and (much of) the gang in action always is a treat, and Bunny continues to grow both as a person and as a supernatural.
This series has truly blown me away from the first book right and through this one. I love the characters, the settings and the simply divine story line. Heather an Jilleen are awesome writers on their own fronts, I have read every book both have put out. Together though they have created this series with such depth an layers, you feel like you could go on holiday an meet everyone in person. They just feel so fleshed out, imperfectly perfect and fiercely loyal. Read them from the start and I promise you, you will be hooked. Also read all the books both authors have published, I have not found even one that wasn't great in its own right!!!! Can't wait for more. Also both ladies have Paetron which is totally worth it even if you just choose the free levels !!! Love the behind the series and author interactions!!
