He’s trying to outrun his past—until she crashes into his future.
My life is as tangled as a wad of skate laces—and it’s a mess I’ve created. I’m captain of my hockey team, on the verge of having my C stripped away. It’s time to piece things back together, and I’m ready for a fresh start. But then I crash into Ellie Hendricks. Literally.
Ellie’s got her own battles, trying to keep her landscaping company afloat. The last thing she needs is someone like me barreling into her world. But I’m determined to make up for my latest screwup, and I won’t stop until I get my way. Ellie says all she wants from me is to fix her van, but as I get to know her, I catch a glimpse of something deeper—and I want it. I want her. I’ve got secrets, though, ones I can’t reveal, and my mixed signals aren’t making it easy on either of us.
Keeping it casual would be the smart play. But the attraction between us? It’s overpowering, dragging us both into the deep end. Sooner or later, my past will come knocking, and we’ll find out if we can keep our heads above water—or if we’ll end up drowning.
G.K. Brady was born in Japan and grew up in Vietnam and Singapore—and many would argue she has yet to grow up.
Since childhood, all sorts of stories and characters have lived in her imagination, elbowing one another for attention, so she’s finally giving them their voice on the written page.
A writer of contemporary romance, she loves telling tales of the less-than-perfect hero or heroine who transforms with each turn of a page.
G.K. is the proud mom of three grown sons. When she’s not writing, she might be reading, traveling, drinking wine, listening to music, or gardening—sometimes all at once! She currently resides in Colorado with her very patient husband.
“I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.”
This book was a pleasure to read and I cannot wait to read the other books in the series. The story is gripping and you do not want to put the book down. The book is funny and has characters you root for. They are by no means perfect, but they complement each other. If you like the Chinook Hockey Team series by Rachel Gibson then you are going to love this book. This book is even better because books of Rachel Gibson can be a bit dated and the man a bit to Alfa male. This book is modern where both main characters can take care of themselves and have respect for each other.
The book is about Dave Grimson “the Grim Reaper”. He is the captain of The Blizzard’s Hockey team and is recovering from a hand injury. The only problem is that he in captain only in name because made some bad decisions. Most of his teammates do not talk to him and he cannot play in any of the games until his hand had healed completely. Dave is frustrated with the situation and wants a new start. This is when he crashes his car into Ellie Hendricks van and his life changes.
Ellie Hendricks has a landscaping company that is at the brink of financial ruin. She is putting all her time and effort into keeping the company afloat and making the company successful. That her van with all the flowers and lights for decorating the house of one of her clients is totalled by some guy who looks like a Wookiee creates even more trouble.
The author tells the story of how they each deal with their past and try to fix the mistakes they made. By reading their thoughts and feelings you understand what they went through and why they act the way they do. Dave at first tries to flee from the mistakes he made while Ellie is trying to fix the mistakes her ex-husband made. Along the way they find each other and the sparks begin to fly.
Another gripping story by Ms Brady!! Defending the Reaper will grip hard and hold your heart within the words of the pages!!
OH MY HELL! Defending the Reaper was an amazing story that I never wanted to end... I'm telling y'all this story is EVERYTHING! This book was absolutely amazing my emotions didn’t know what to do. I love these type books. They just get me right in the feels and I love it. Defending the Reaper will grip hard and hold your heart within the words of the pages. Emotional, passionate and compelling. Another gripping story by Ms Brady. The angst, the emotion, the drama, the heartache . . . I felt like I was holding my breath! So, everyone needs to hit their one click buttons immediately as I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL! Happy reading everyone!!
(Audio Review) Defending the Reaper is the fifth in the series, but can be read as a standalone. This series just keeps getting better and better, and I enjoyed this book as much as the previous 4!
In this book we finally get to understand Dave Grimson “the Grim Reaper” who we previously met briefly in the other books. He is the captain of The Blizzard’s Hockey team and is recovering from a hand injury. Unfortunately for him, due to his injury, he has made some bad decisions and is now faced with the consequences as most of his teammates no longer speak to him. Add in the fact that he is also not allowed to play in any games until his injury is completely healed. After dealing with all this for a while, Dave is frustrated and decides he wants a change in his circumstances. This is when he meets our heroine Ellie Hendricks when he accidentally crashes into her van.
Meanwhile, Ellie Hendricks is not doing so well. She owns a landscaping company that is on the brink of financial ruin. She spends all her time, effort, and money trying to stay afloat and making her company a success. Both her life and Dave’s changes when they crash into each other.
I really, really enjoyed this story. Both Ellie and Dave are trying to fix their past mistakes; Dave by trying to run from his; Ellie tries to fix the mistake her ex-husband made. In doing so, they both find and get to know each other. The progression of their relationship was just too emotional and sweet. I also loved how the book dove into their past in a way that made me understand them as people and why they act the way they do. Overall, Defending the Reaper was such an amazingly, emotional, and sweet story that gave me all the feels. I highly recommend it!
I listened to this on audio. It was narrated by Tor Thom and Whitton Frank who both did excellent. They were amazing at portraying the characters of Dave and Ellie respectively. They brought personality to their performances. Thom’s portrayal of Dave was broody, yet sweet and captured the essence of Dave. Frank was also excellent as Ellie, capturing her feelings so well. I really enjoyed this story and its narration!
Dave Grimson the Blizzard's captain is known as the Grim Reaper, used to being in charge and the team leader, is now the leader in name only. After an injury he got in trouble with his team, got dumped by his girlfriend and is now single and wanting to get out of where he's at and start over. He literally crashes into Ellie Hendricks van and totals it. Ellie has been through a lot and is barely keeping her landscaping business afloat and doesn't need this happening to her or Dave in her life. Dave with his good intentions tries to right a wrong and help Ellie out. She is not impressed by him, his money or even him being a celebrity hockey player. Dave doesn't give up, Ellie is different but he has secrets and he keeps sending her mixed signals. There's no doubt they have chemistry but is that enough? Will Dave be dragged back into what got him in trouble before?
This was so good. You think you know what is gonna happen but then there's another twist. Can't wait to see what is next in book 6, No Touch Zone
I received an ARC of this book for my honest opinion. 5 stars
Dave Grimson has made some bad decisions in his past and is trying for redemption. Ellie got caught in a bad situation with her ex-husband on a personal AND professional basis. Dave's cousin Sonoma has been trying to fix him up with Ellie but without success. Fate steps in to lend a hand... or Dave's temper and distracted driving really. Plenty of sparks flying between these two as an unlikely romance begins. They each have their demons to battle... the question is will their demons win, or will they get their chance at HEA? I've really enjoyed this series so far and am looking forward to seeing what comes next. GK Brady brings the characters to life as they deal with bad decisions and all the emotions that come with them and trying to move forward. You've got the characters you love, and the ones you love to hate to round things out. There were moments that had me laughing out loud, and others grabbing for a tissue. Definitely for the 18+ audience.
Book 5 in the Playmakers series and can be read as a standalone. Great read about two people who have their own demons to fight but are able to fight them together. Loved the characters and the storyline. If you are looking for a story that will grab you from page one, then this is the story for you. You will be so happy that you picked this us. A perfect story to relax with. This was the second book that I have read from this author and it won’t be my last. Highly recommend this read.
This was a solid redemption story. I have been excited for Grim’s chance at love since he fell from grace back in Gage’s story, and I enjoyed the result overall. I love a redemption story, and while I wish there had been more scenes of Dave rebuilding and repairing the connection to the team, I get why other choices were made. He makes an impulsive decision within the first moments of the story that looms for the rest, and that tension, though not what I expected, was done really well to anchor the plot. I just love the secondary characters in the Playmakers series roster, so I always want more of the guys together off the ice. Still the moments between them that are here are enough to tide me over til the next audio.
I loved the relationship between Dave and Ellie. From their meet-cute via vehicular t-bone, to square-dancing and food box auctions, to the quieter moments when they were just being together - I really enjoyed their love story. In typical Grady fashion, we have some adorable dog moments, as Dave and Ellie have 2 lovable pups between them. I appreciated that it wasn’t all smooth sailing, couch snuggles, and dirty talk. Each MC had their demons and doubts to overcome, but the connection was there from the first sparks. And even though Brady once again fell into the less appealing cliche of including an evil ex for Dave which plays into the inevitable third act break up, it wasn’t the only element at play in that conflict. As in previous books in the series, I thought other tensions were more compelling to drive Dave and Ellie apart for a time than a rather one-dimensional manipulative, materialistic man-eater. But they are great together and their friend/family circles mesh well, which makes for some cute scenes with them, Finn and Sonoma.
The audiobook was another enjoyable installment in the series. Tor Thom as Dave is growly yummy-ness for the ears in intense and passionate moments, but he also plays the quieter redemption moments beautifully. Whitton Frank returns to the series (she previous voiced Natalie in book 2) to portray Ellie and she does just as fine a job as she did the first time around. Ellie has a lot of self-deprecating internal asides, and Frank was deft at handling those. One area where both narrator performances were a let down for me was when they put on their opposite sex voices - both make for less appealing versions of their counterparts. Thom’s version of Ellie and Frank’s of Dave often took me out of the moment, especially in intimate scenes. Still, this is often a pitfall with dual narration, and listeners just have to deal; not all productions can be duet and not every narrator can put a believable spin on multiple genders. The audiobook is worth listening to regardless, and once again, I wait impatiently for the next Playmakers audiobook. It really is an entertaining series.
I received an ALC copy of the audiobook via Home Cooked Books and read via KU. All opinions are my own.
Wonderful dual narration from Tor Thom and Whitton Frank. Perfect for this book
Dave Grimson “the Grim Reaper” is the captain of The Blizzard’s Hockey team and is recovering from a hand injury. Due to his injury, he has made some bad decisions and the consequences is most of his teammates no longer speak to him. Dave meets Ellie Hendricks when he accidentally crashes into her van. Ellie owns a landscaping company that is on the brink of financial ruin. Struggling to keep her company going and a success. Everything chase when Dave crashes into Ellie's van.
I really enjoyed this book. With the main female character feeling that she’s not enough for this famous hockey player. It’s a very entertaining storyline. I love the chemistry between the characters and the way they both have insecurities. A great performance.
When famous hockey player Dave and landscaper Ellie crash into each other, Dave feels responsible for buying her a new vehicle. During the process he ends up falling for her and does little things along the way that makes her fall just as hard for him. 💜 This is a sweet story and I absolutely loved all of the yoda and wookie references. Tor Thom and Whitton Frank brought Dave “the grim reaper” and Ellie to life in Defending the Reaper by G.K. Brady! I absolutely was entranced by Tor’s deep voice and thought Whitton was the perfect choice for Ellie. This was my first book by this author and it will not be my last. Thanks to home cooked books for an audio copy in return for an honest review
I really enjoyed this slow burn hockey romance narrated by Tor Thom and Whittin Frank. Defending the Reaper is the fifth book in this series and can be read as a standalone. This is Dave and Ellie’s story.
They had an unfortunate meet cute where Dave falls for Ellie and doesn’t everything in his power to make her his. I loved the sizzling chemistry between Dave and Ellie. This was a sweet story and I loved the banter between the characters.
It’s always a pleasure to listen to anything narrated by Tor Thom and this book was no different. I haven’t heard any of Whitton Frank’s work, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.
Dave and Ellie meet unexpectedly and both are dealing with some baggage in their lives. They have an instant attraction but don’t act on it because they both have some trust issues.
It’s a good redemption story and all the characters are great, the flow of the story is engaging and these two being out the best in each other.
Tor Thom and Witten Frank did a good job with the narration. They gave the characters good voice, personality and emotion. One disappointment was when the narrators did the opposite sex voices….just didn’t work for me.
Yee Haw partner, this book is interesting but fun. I like the whole Wookie thing. I think Ellie and Dave seem to be a great couple, But the cousin and step brother surprised me. My favorite part was the dance. I like the narrators, they did a great job bringing everyone to live. Listening to this audiobook fly right by and screaming for more, thankfully it's part of a series. A series I now have to listen to.
Loved this fifth installment in the series! The humor and storyline make this a memorable one! The characters are delightful! They each have their hang-ups to overcome but it sure is fun watching them do it. The meet-cute is perfect! What a way to start the book! They have such chemistry! I completely believed in these two! I adored the Star Wars nicknames! Their friends completely added to the story! I enjoyed their meddling and little romance. Overall this story starts off great and gets better as it goes along. I listened to this on audio. Tor Thom and Whitton Frank do a wonderful job with the narration.
This is the fifth book in The Playmakers series, a Hockey Romance. I liked Dave and Ellie's slow burn romance. I loved to follow them in their second chance in love. The story is sweet, and heartwarming, filled with humor, and banter. The supporting characters are amazing. Whitton Frank and Tor Thom did an excellent job bringng this story to life. I enjoyed it. Looking forward to listening to No Touch Zone, the next book in the series. #HomeCookedBooks
My favorite thing about this story is how real and flawed the relationship between Ellie and Dave is. It’s so relatable and that helped me connect so much to these characters. Dave has made huge mistakes and is working on many relationships in his life and is so vulnerable and just wants to make people happy. Ellie is a strong independent woman but still lacks self confidence and it really affects her end of the relationship and makes you want to scream at her on several occasions. Lots of emotional responses to be had while reading this story.
The narration was good. Tor Thom as always knocks it out of the park!! He is one of my favorites for a reason and I could listen to him talk for hours!!! Whitton Frank does a good job as well. It took me some time to adjust to her take on Dave’s char but the rest of it was so good it didn’t detract too much for me.
I listened to the Audiobook that was narrated by Tor Thom and Whitton Frank. The Narrators did an excellent performance capturing the essence of the characters and the story...as they portrayed Dave and Ellie with all the emotions and fun that needed to be played out..I really enjoyed listening to them. I Love this Hockey world that G.K Brady has created relishing the other 4 books I was super excited to listen to book 5 which is Dave The Reapers story, the captain who is wallowing in his downfall. He is really going through a bad time he had been caught taking PED's(Performance enhancing drugs).so he could recover quicker from an injury. His team are ignoring him angry and disappointed with him,his girlfriend had dumped him and took his beloved dog and now he had just crashed his car into someones van. He needs a fresh start,a trade to another team and to just get away from everything. Ellie's life is not going to plan either she recently broke up with her fiance who left her in a mountain of debt...she almost lost her landscaping buisness and is now trying to make ends meet. That is why she cannot afford to have some douche bag crashing into her, making her late for her latest job and destroying her vehicle. It must have been fate that day that Dave and Ellie crashed into one another, because despite everything they strike up a friendship as Dave tries to make it right for Ellie. The thing with Dave is he appears to be grumpy and unapproachable he looks like a hobo he could use a haircut,a beard trim and a set of teeth to replace the missing ones.Dave is actually quite sweet, caring and very generous with his money and time. But he is so conflicted about his career and his injury, the temptation to use PED's again strong so his hand could heal. But he shows his strength in character when he resists using them he wants to earn his team mates respect back. Ellie is such a good person she doesn't judge and despite Dave's appearance I think she is drawn to him like a magnet and finds him attractive even with missing teeth. But Ellie is like most woman and she has insecurities about herself, she cannot understand why a famous Hockey player would want to spend time with her.She isn't glamourous and some would say she is not feminine opting for comfortable clothes instead of flashy sexy clothing. So why would a man who is used to dating actresses and models be interested in her,a plain old landscaper. But Dave does unexpectedly find her attractive and captivating she is easy to talk to and they become friends and get close, until BOOM !! They cross that line and they are HOT,HOT,HOT.!! This story is a slow burn so be patient it is worth it..I loved their chemistry and Dave is quite amusing when he becomes so protective of Ellie..chasing all other men away...yet he denies he even cares. But nothing is easy and there are always things in the way like disgruntled ex's and the trade on the horizon, plus the fact that they are not truthful to one another about their feelings for eachother. I Loved listening to this book there is so much to enjoy and G.K Brady weaves such a detailed and enthralling story of their blossoming romance. The writing is perfection and I honestly was so lost within this world because it just felt so real I didn't want it to end. The ending was beautiful and was such a heart warming moment...I couldn't stop swooning. This is a superb audiobook with a riveting, fun, sexy and sweet story about two people meant to be together...and overcome the odds to do so. I cannot wait for book 6...and to see what happens next. Amazing Audiobook. 5 Stars.
DEFENDING THE REAPER The Playmakers Series, Book 5 By: G.K. Brady Narrated by: Tor Thom, Whitton Frank
GK Brady pens another winning novel set in her “Playmakers” series, a sports romance novel. Each book features different lead characters and their story stands on their own. This fifth book is Dave Grimson's and Ellie Hendricks’ story. Their first interaction was not the best, he t-boned her van with his sports car, not only totaling the van but ruining her day, everything inside the van and the job she was heading to. Ellie owns a landscaping business, a business is that is struggling, so during the off season she started doing outside decorations for the holidays and garden parties. Dave has a lot on his mind, and was not paying attention when he was driving. He is not happy where he is. His past mistakes have cost him the respect of his teammates and he is looking to be traded. It was his inattentiveness that caused him to crash his car and Dave tries to make things right for Ellie. It turns out that Ellie is the neighbor that his cousin, Somona, was trying to set him up with. Both these characters had their issues and their struggles, which made that real. Both had loser exes too, though Ellie’s was not in the picture, Dave’s was and she was manipulative and I knew she was nothing but trouble the moment she was introduced, high maintenance for sure. I enjoyed how everything played out in this book, the writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. The story is entertaining and captivates your attention from start to end. G.K. Brady, thank you for another fantastic story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 And for the terrific narration, Tor Thom and Whitton Frank were the storytellers and did a great job portraying the characters, humanizing them, giving each their own voice and personality. I think it would have been even better had this been a duet performance or that Tor Thom performed Dave’s role the entire book, because he was a natural in the role and aced it. Frank was fabulous as Ellie, and while she changed it up while covering the role of Dave changing her voice to sound deeper, but it sounded too gruff almost like it was painful for her to drop into that range, and I can not imagine it being easy to do for a length of time, so kudos to her for that. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling every single one. Thank you for another great listen.
Defending the Reaper is book five in The Playmakers series and is the not so meet cute, tortured hero, grumpy sunshine, hockey romance of Dave “Grim Reaper” Grimson and Ellie Hendricks. Despite being the team captain, Grim us persona non grata in the Blizzard locker room due to past bad decisions with ped’s. On top of that his girlfriend has dumped him and taken his dog, so with his professional life a mess, Dave decides it’s time for a change and requests a trade anywhere out of Colorado when next thing he knows he has hit a van with his Aston Martin and the woman he T-boned is really angry as he’s totalled the van she uses for her landscaping business and damaged the contents ruining the job she was headed to which doesn’t help Ellie’s struggling business. When he heads to his cousin’s salon, he realises Ellie is the neighbour Sonoma has been trying to set him up with. Dave gets the chance to help Ellie and her business out and have some fun along the way, square dancing and food box auctions leading to a date and taking advantage of the chance to redeem himself with the team and finally set his ex-straight, Dave really does pull the mother of all turnarounds when it comes to the team. So, despite him having offers from other teams, he has a decision to make, take the trade and start fresh or stay and build something with Ellie? Tor Thom and Whitton Frank bring Dave and Ellie to life, and they do an incredible job. Mr Thom’s portrayal of the disgraced hockey captain whose life seems to be going from bad to worse until he meets Ellie was superb. Tor’s deep baritone tone was perfect to showcase reformed alpha team captain Grim. Ms Frank’s performance as the kind, sweet and loyal Ellie who is initially livid at the toothless brute who t-boned her but is soon smitten with him was sensational. Whitton’s sweet, honeyed tone perfectly highlighted the kind-hearted landscaper. Overall, I really loved this audiobook and thought it was the perfect addition to an amazing series. Ms Brady had me captivated from start to finish with her words and storytelling. She has weaved the perfect hockey world for us readers to get lost in and each book that is added just gets better and better. If you love a good not so meet cute with a tortured hero, grumpy sunshine dynamic and a hockey romance then this is the book for you.
Defending The Reaper is book 5 in this series but can be read as a standalone (I’ve only read this one in the series) and while I assume there’s interconnected stories there was no confusion or need to know information from the previous books to enjoy this one.
Dave Grimson “The Grimm Reaper”, the captain of his hockey team with a sour taste in his mouth. Dave got himself into some hot water and the consequences of that have damaged his relationship with the rest of the team, because of that he’s looking for way out in the form of a trade. But then Ellie comes along and Dave crashes into her, literally, he actually crashes his car into her. And now he can’t seem to get this beauty out of his mind, only to find out her office is right by his cousins salon. What are the odds?
Ellie Hendricks is struggling with her business after her now ex-husband screwed her over leaving her with too much work, not enough money, and a side of self-doubt when it comes to men. Luckily she’s got her step-brother to help out or she’d be totally screwed. The last thing she needed was to get t-boned by a toothless Neanderthal who reminded her of a Wookiee.
This was a super meet-cute hockey romance. I enjoyed the storyline and the way Dave and Ellie’s relationship bloomed. Throw in the fact that they both had shitty exes and their own issues they’ve got to overcome and you’ve got a recipe for a sweet love story. The characters were relatable because of their flaws and life issues which is something I enjoy in a good story. One of my favourites parts was the voice in Dave’s head, I couldn’t help but giggle every time his inner Yoda started talking.
Both narrators did amazing jobs. Tor Thom had the perfect gruff and husky voice to portray our grumpy hockey player Grim and Whitton Frank had the right amount of sweet and sass for Ellie.
I received a free audiobook from Home Cooked Books and I’m leaving my honest review.
Defending the Reaper is book #5 in G.K. Brady’s series The Playmakers
If you love a standalone sports story with a strong HEA and realistic characters who overcome their flaws, this is one you’ll have to download! .. and if you haven’t read the other books in the series, you’ll want to get those next. Characters from previous books are supporting characters in Defending the Reaper, so you’ll find familiar friends if you’ve read any of the other books in the series.
Dave Grissom is known as the Grim Reaper. He’s the team captain who is struggling through a confidence crisis and an injury that has him sidelined. He’s been dumped by his girlfriend, misses his girlfriend’s son, shares custody of his dog, and is starting over to rewin the trust of his team. ... He needs them just like they need him, but sometimes things are too far gone and one needs a fresh start. Dave has all of this on his mind when he runs into Eli Hendricks
...as in runs into her with his car. She’s struggling to keep her landscaping business afloat after her ext took her to the cleaners financially and emotionally. She’s got a strong support system with Sonoma and her cousin .. but she’s got a special agent trailing her ... and now a famous sportsman trying to make things right.
What I love about Defending the Reaper is that Dave and Ellie are real characters .. they have problems like the rest of us and have to learn to trust one another and take a leap of faith to get what they want ... and need out of life.
If you’ve read other books by Ms. Brady, you’ll not be disappointed ... but if you’re considering this to be your first by the author, don’t hesitate ... you won’t be sorry!
I received an ARC; this is my honest review of a book I binge read the moment it hit my eReader!
I've been looking forward to Dave's story ever since he was caught using PED drugs in a previous novel in this series. I love reading how broken or 'disgraced' characters find themselves (and love) again. Dave's life is pretty messed up, and when he 'meets' Ellie, despite the circumstances, it starts to look up. But he's already started the wheels in motion to trade to another team so he's feeling torn about where he belongs. These two characters try to resist the attraction, giving them time to get to know each other a little better before giving in which I appreciated (there are several long sex scenes in this book).
They're both denying their true feelings, Dave going hot and cold and hard to read. Then it started to drag a little and I went days between picking it up, I think because there were some really long 'date' scenes that didn't need to be so long, along with other 'bit' characters that got a lot of book time for how little they contributed to the story development (and I wasn't thrilled with the 'side romance' of the two best friends but that could be my own bias; that just always seems too convenient and distracts from the main story).
After all the time the author spent getting these two together, when the 'black moment' came it was a bit of a disappointment, as it came in the form of Dave's rather cliched ex-wife, Nicole. Ellie knows Nicole is a liar and manipulative be-atch and yet Ellie let her derail the relationship. Still, there was much to like (personally I loved the parts where Dave struggled with the temptation of PEDs because that's real) and the ending was very sweet.
Dave Grimson was persona non grata in the Blizzards locker room. Despite being the team’s captain, his bad decisions in the past with PEDs have his teammates freezing him out. So, with having been dumped and his professional life a mess, Dave thinks it’s time for a change by way of a trade.
Ellie Hendricks is struggling to get her landscaping and design business on the right foot after her husband’s betrayal. Just when she thinks she has it under control, Dave Grimson crashes into her, literally.
Between Dave trying to make up for his damages and his cousin playing matchmaker, he and Ellie start spending some time together. And before they know it, their hearts start to get involved. But what about the trade and the other secrets Dave’s keeping? Read this book to find out!
I feel like, in a way, readers like myself who’ve read every book in the series, may be slightly predisposed to disliking or being weary of Dave since we’d already read about his issues with PEDs. However, once again, G.K. Brady turned a less than stellar character into a flawed, complicated man who truly had a beautiful heart. To be honest, Dave not only won me over, but I found myself falling for the Grim Reaper. He just might be my favorite character of the series so far!
I loved Ellie and loved the fact that she was clueless about Dave. She was the opposite of the type of woman Dave usually dated, caring, straightforward, and uncomplicated. The slow burn between Ellie and Dave was hot, but when things got deeper...wow! This series just keeps getting better and I can’t wait for the next one!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I love it when an author gives you an inside look into her most damaged characters. It speaks volumes for an author when she can have you falling for character who weren't presented in the most positive of lights in previous books. Ms. Brady has such a wonderful way of writing that sucks readers in, I was up until 2:00 in the morning finishing this book because I couldn't put it down.
Dave has not had it easy for so long that he can't see clearly why that is. His team doesn't like or respect him and his title of Captain is a joke. His girlfriend dumped him and took his dog. He can't handle the pain from an injury or the recovery time. So he believes his only way out is literally out.
But there is so much more to all of this. He has to learn that things are not always what they seem. He has to learn to be a Captain again and to believe in himself. It isn't until he "crashes" into El that things in his life start taking a different perspective. She gives him the courage to see his power and accept his "Wookiness." I enjoyed the witty banter between Dave's Han and Yoda inner voice, the way Ms. Brady uses the game of hockey for her figurative language, the way El and Dave brought out the best in themselves, the way the intimate scenes add to the story intentionally, the freshness and loyalty of both El and Dave. I received a free copy of this book and I voluntarily reviewed it.
Defending the Reaper The Playmakers Series Hockey Romances, Book 5 By: G.K. Brady Narrated by: Tor Thom, Whitton Frank
Can an accident be the way to a woman's heart? Dave, the captain of his team is having some personal issues. While driving, his mind drifts and the next thing you know, he slams into Ellie's van. Now to some this is a make or break problem, but for these two, it turns out to be the start of something good. Or does it? With Ellie's company on the verge of going under and Dave's secrets he is keeping, these two have a lot of stress that just may be the end of their beginning! This is a great look into the strength of the team and their loyalty to each other, and the loyalty of family. Fantastic characters like Finn and those we love to hate like Dave's ex, we are treated to an array of emotional turmoil and joy. It's a wonderful listen, and if you love hockey, grab this series!!
Tor Thom and Whitton Frank are our storytellers, and they are both excellent! Thom nails the part of Dave. He is broody, yet sweet, and finds his way stumbling through life. Thom captures each of his emotions as he delves into his character. Frank is great as Ellie. She understands her and finds each feeling and using her inflections lets us feel it too. She does have a little difficulty reaching Dave's low tones, but makes up for it with Ellie. I enjoyed this look into the Reaper and loved the story!
0,7,8,9,3 (now 5)...the order I have read this series thus far. No regrets. I am simply not interested in all of the books, players, stories. Maybe I will circle back someday, but for now, I'm building my literary version of Tommy Tutone's 867-5309/Jenny.
Ellie is a 28 year old landscape architect. Business owner. Dave Grimson is a 32 year old professional athlete. Team captain. Defenseman. And a rambler? I am not sure if I find his nervous word vomit adorable or not believable. And the more he mentions Denver soon-to-be in his rearview mirror, the more unlikely it obviously becomes; these mentions are overdone. Further, he is in control of this- extended a goddamned olive branch and fix things with your team of 10 years, rather than focusing on starting over elsewhere. This jury of one needs an extended recess to decide a verdict.
Why is it that romance authors always seem to include the scent of "man?" What the hell is that and does it come in a bottle?" Minus the square and line dancing and a shirt that unsnaps open. Those can bottle themselves far away from me. And from our 'grim' lead.
If a federal agent of any department comes sniffing around, you had better ask why. The reason for his part in the story thus far is unknown, but to ignore it and wonder if he is just showing a casual interest in you, is stupid and naive. This strange addition to the story was more than unnecessary. It had no place. Was out of place.
And I liked the way that Dave was portrayed (as a character in passing) better in other books in this series. As the lead, he lacks confidence, strength and toughness that is expected of swoon-worthy men and it is disappointing. I wanted to be fierce and protective with a rough exterior, none of which were present in 'Defending the Reaper.' I guess death is not so scary anymore.
I have to confess that I am not a fan of hockey, but when I read the synopsis of the story, I decided to give this audiobook a try. Dave Grimsons life until recently, was idyllic . Captain of a great hockey team, a beautiful girlfriend, health and a bright future. All comes tumbling down and he decides leaving town to reassess his life and his future , is the right thing to do. Ellie Hendricks is trying her best to dig from under the mess her ex left her. A once successful landscaping company is barely surviving due to the debts the ex incurred. Things get even more dire for Ellie when Dave literally crashes into her truck and her life . From that moment on the attraction is evident but these two have been hurt in the past and are determined to protect their hearts. Will they realize they are meant for each other? Will it come crashing down if Dave is traded? This is a story about second chances in life and love. Glad I gave this audiobook a try. The narrator Tor Thom did a very good job with the voices. I was entrusted a copy of this audiobook. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
The fifth book in the Playmaker series enforces to me that this is one of the best hockey series I have ever read. The standout in this book to me isn’t the characters - although they are exceptional - it happens to be how the author shone a spotlight on the dark side of professional sports. I liked that Dave wasn’t perfect. That his life when you got past all the surface stuff was anything but what everyone looking in would think. Then add into how he tries on a daily basis to right his wrongs to not only himself but his teammates I am hard pressed to think of a more perfectly imperfect character that I have read this year. Ellie herself is trying her hardest to get on top of her past. She has some great people in her life which helps but it isn’t until Dave literally crashes into her life that things take a turn for the better. I really do hope that there will be more books to come - maybe Viktor or Wyatt??? Fingers crossed!! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
