Un Descubrimiento: Amor y Otras Cosas

Rate this book

Exaggerated, unrealistic and rushed.

It feels lacking in romance and emotions. I didn't feel sympathy for her uncle's story or excited about the discovery and most certainly didn't understand their love story. It could have been so much better!

"This man, the one whose heart was beating furiously against mine, was everything I hadn't known I needed. I had fallen for him, and there was no returning from it. My obsession with him was more than just physical. It was whole and consuming, it was love."

Uhm, lovely words but are you sure, Sanura? Because your obsession with each other was mostly physical! I can't see why this thing is suddenly labelled LOVE.

# James was way too grumpy most of the time, he was either glaring or growling. And Sanura? She really irritated me for not giving proper reactions when needed, she always caved in to desire, instead.

# The café scene was ridiculous, there was no obvious reason why James took the girl to his place. He forced her and she didn't react.

# And I lost count to the amount of times she mentioned that he smelled like books and whiskey, as if this was his signature cologne or smth

# At the beginning, I was worried it would turn out to be stereotypical, no actually, it was moderate, tbh.

# The chosen names for Egyptian characters are rarely used around here tho, they may fit more in Iran or south Asia. And Shiraz (if used) is mostly given to a girl not a boy.

I'm into forbidden romance, age gap, and the teacher-student trope and this book have it all. My issue only issue is that I don't see any chemistry between James and Kitty. They barely had any interactions (I think only two?) before their first kiss. I was expecting the longing and lowkey trying to go on dates or trying to find private places so they could be together but they both jumped right into it. What irks me too is that James is overly jealous and possessive over a student flirting with Kitty eventhough she repeatedly told him that she only see Felipe as a friend. I don't mind the spice though but it felt like everything was a rush.

I liked that James helped in searching for Kitty's uncle. I think this is the most he gave to her in the book lol. I also enjoyed the Egyptian setting and its history, which I'm glad is not that overwhelming. The cover is so cute too!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was giving cheap Mummy vibes. Without the Mummy. The writing felt like a summary of children's books - we have these shorthand versions of Disney classics, and that's what this book seemed like. It went from 0 to 60 insta-lusty in the span of 1 chapter.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Everything else - nah.

biggest thanks to Grey’s Promotions for an advanced copy of this book.

A Discovery: Love and Other Things by Victoria Woods is releasing September 14, 2023!

this book was easy and quick to read, that’s for sure. i also appreciated how unique the setting was. i’ve always been interested in archaeology, so this one really intrigued me. the romance between two main characters was also cute. and the spicy scenes were *chef’s kiss*

but on the other hand i didn’t like how everything happened so quickly. it was a bit of instalove for me. and i think it would have been better if it wasn’t told from just her POV. i needed to know Dr. Campbell’s perspective as well.

but overall, i had such a fun time reading this book. i definitely enjoyed it. especially those spicy scenes 🔥🔥🔥

Review: Before I get into the review, a special thanks to the author Victoria Wood and @passionauthorservices for this ARC!!

This is my first time reading this author and I really enjoyed her writing. I usually don’t mention dedications or authors notes, but I was really touched by the authors note at the end of this book. It really makes this story more personal.

One of my favorite things about this story is the setting and situation. The MFC Sanura aka Kitty is a student studying to become an archeologist. She’s thrilled to be accepted into an 8 week program where she gets to participate on a dig in Egypt. Which is where she meets Dr Campbell, (aka James) her mentor for the program.

Kitty is bright and motivated to get everything she can out of this program. Being a part of unearthing ancient Egyptian relics is an absolute dream for her. Kitty is also thrilled to finally connect to her Egyptian roots.

But Kitty is distracted by the magnetic chemistry she has with her mentor, who has an immediate infatuation with Kitty. Only problem is that not only is a student/professor relationship frowned upon, it’s not tolerated in Egypt.

While Kitty and James get swept up in one another, they are playing a dangerous game that could end both their careers and even get them put in jail.

I really enjoyed so many aspects or this book. It’s steamy, the setting is unique, and I loved the Egyptian history and culture that the author wove into the story. I’m not a huge fan of the whole instalove thing, but that’s just me. It didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of this book. I definitely recommend giving it a read 😊

• Age Gap
• Romance
• Relación prohibida (alumna y maestro)
• Grumphy-Sunshine
• Ambientado en Egipto
• Spicy

A romance involving a budding Egyptologist who’s doing an internship in her dad’s homeland? Yes, please! Between my hieroglyphics-obsessed childhood and my curiosity about her finding her dad’s family, I was so ready for this book. Unfortunately, while both of those ended up being minor themes, it’s a decent age gap, professor/intern forbidden romance.

For Sanura, an eight-week internship at a dig in Egypt isn’t just a chance to get more experience in her field. It’s also a chance to explore her heritage, something that’s been hard to do since she and her mother lost touch with her Egyptian father’s side of the family after his death. But the internship seems doomed from the start. Her luggage has gone missing, the clothes her BFF lent her don’t fit, and Professor James Campbell, her new mentor, seems to have taken an immediate dislike to her. Considering Sanura can’t get the hot professor out of her mind, that’s going to be a problem in more ways than one.

Sanura and James have undeniable chemistry-with-a-capital-C. As for the relationship part, well, the whole thing is forbidden so there’s not so much on the getting-to-know-you side before the instalust kicks in. The book tilts heavily towards spicier scenes, especially if you like exhibitionism. There were some moments, like when they were talking about their work – something they’re both knowledgeable and passionate about despite their 15 year age gap – where I felt like they connected, but I would’ve loved to see more emotional depth to the relationship.

Maybe it’s because we only get Sanura’s POV, but I was never quite sure about James. It doesn’t help that they start off on completely the wrong foot, not to mention his usual brusque manner and general intolerance for anything he considers less than perfect. He does eventually open up more to Sanura, but as I mentioned before, it’s not quite enough, plus he develops a new jerk tendency. James is ridiculously jealous over her friendship with a fellow intern, despite Sanura’s repeated reassurances that she’d set appropriate boundaries. And yes, I do feel weird saying a character in student/professor relationship is actually capable of setting “appropriate boundaries” but here we are.

As for the family part or archaeology, its pretty much all overshadowed by the romance. There’s a few scenes of her investigating her family roots and there’s a bit of her longing and wonder about being in her dad’s native land and I enjoyed those immensely. The Egyptology was also pretty basic (at one point the professor explains cartouches to Sanura which is like elementary school level) but the mystery behind the temple’s builder unfolded in a very interesting way. I was a little put off by the ethical issues with the relationship between a mentor and an intern. That’s a me problem – it’s clear from the blurb that that’s where it’s going, but I thought there would’ve been some attempt to ameliorate them. Nah. And the way those issues are handled in the end left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Overall, while the chemistry between the main characters was amazing, the rest of the book didn’t work as well for me. This is the author’s debut novel however so I look forward to seeing her growth with her next book.

I received this book for free from Grey's Promotions in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

this book had so much potential but the author wasted it in lieu of providing her readers with some smut. i think she fully lost sight of the plot once the MCs began hooking up. not to mention, the chemistry between the MCs seemed forced, rushed and just absurd. there was absolutely no pining or sexual tension whatsoever.

RELEASE DATE: September 14th // will be available on KU

- Forbidden
- professor + intern
- age gap
- STEM/ Academia Romance

This was a very cute and fun read. I flew through it in no time, it was able to keep my attention. I have never seen a romance set in an archeological setting so that was a nice change and I was able to learn new things about King Tut.

Sanura and James had some static from the first time they met at the dig site and while they bonded over the hieroglyphs and feeling their passion while they talked about the subject of their focus, you could feel the connection grow! I could feel and see the scene in my mind.
The spice was spicy. BUT I felt like their connection during those scenes was lacking, that may have had to do with the locations and interruptions when the spice happened. I feel like I loved their connection up until the spice started and then it was just wham bam thank ya ma’am.

The relationship I feel could have been built up just a smidge more, it felt slightly like the speed of a novella relationship.

This was my first Victoria Woods book and I will for sure be trying another one of hers. Thank you for the opportunity to read ADLAOT. <3

“… mostly because my brain seemed to be malfunctioning anytime he was nearby. I chalked it up to his superficial good looks and nothing more. The man could catch the eye of a blind chimpanzee, with his perfectly symmetrical face.”

“I was a child of my intuition and based major decisions on gut feelings. A scientist who listened to her heart over her brain—nothing sounded crazier.”

“F*ck me. Not literally. Well, maybe. Who could think straight with that standing in front of them?”

This was such a breath of fresh air and something different from what I usually read. I loved the relationship between kitty and her mum as well as her best friend. Her journey into finding out more about where she came from was also sweet. The SPICE is definitely spiced lol. It's also my first book based around Egyptian culture and history and I ate it up! So beautifully written. It sort of gave me Ali Hazelwood vibes too.

A fun smutty student x professor romance! I loved the archeology aspects and the Egypt setting a lot. I think this is the perfect book to pull you out of a slump because it is short and fast paced. I loved our main characters and while it was a little insta lusty, that was ok with me for this book.

I really loved the first half of this. The setting and premise were everything. And I loved the initial chemistry between the MCs. Where this fell a little flat for me was in the romantic buildup. This was missing any emotional connection. Their physical connection was obvious but nothing that made me believe there was anything more there.

Thank you Victoria Woods for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this novel.

I loved learning new things about Egypt and most of my favourite tropes were in this novel. I loved that there was no miscommunication or third act break up!

There were so many things I have enjoyed about this book: first of all Dr James Campbell. How hot was he when he found Sunara with Felipe at the restaurant? or dancing together?? God, I love a good jealous man, especially when all his jealosy turned into hot and steamy scenes..... The bathroom in the club, anyone?? That was too good.

Sanura was an incredible FMC who stood up for herself, and for the man she loved, but was especially not afraid to give James a piece of her mind when he was exaggerating with his possessiveness and jealousy.

And last but not least, the way the title was so connected into the sory was some thing I have never seen in other books!

Spice 3.5
Overall 4.25

This was my first time reading a novel by Victoria Woods and it will not be my last. This was an
amazingly well writing story about love and other things life throws your way.

Sanura, who goes by kitten, was raised by her mother and lost her father at a very young age. He was originally from Egypt and once he passed away, she lost all connection to his side of the family and the culture. She was lucky enough to get accepted to an internship for her archeology degree in Egypt with an accomplished and well-known professor from Oxford. But as soon as she lands in the birthplace of her father, she finds that her bag with all her clothes and supplies is missing. Thankfully (ish) her best friend lends her some clothes that may or may not be acceptable to wear to the digging site.

James Campbell is trying to make a discovery and soon before the Ministry takes their grants away. He has made some head way but not enough to keep it going past this summer. That is until a very strong will and passionate intern enters his site. Sanura. He must keep remembering she is his student, someone he should be mentoring, not fantasizing about. But she makes it so hard when she's constantly around, sometimes accompanied by another male intern.

It was a quick read but full of character development, romance, and steamy scenes. I absolutely loved the balance of tension and romance with the almost getting caught intimate scenes. I think the cover does such a good job at showcasing that balance that is throughout the book. There were some emotional parts in the book, especially when she talked about her father and trying to find her family. I did wish it was a little bit longer and we got to see more bonding between Sanura and the other interns. It felt like they had a great relationship, for the most part, but we only got bits and pieces of it.

If you love Indiana Jones and a contemporary romance set in Egypt, then this is the book for you.

Book starts with a conversation between mother and daughter, describing their natural sweet bond. Every chapter of the book is written with perspective of the female protagonist “ sanura” (loved the name).

Its a story on history of Egypt but not in the deep. I hope if it could provide more information. First half of it was pretty interesting, but then everything revolves around sex. A lot of things were left unsaid and author have forgot to mention mother, when sanura got the dick. Oooff… bonding and chemistry were a lost cause after the first half. This book could be so much more interesting with depth historical research and intense chemistry, romance( not sex but romance) . Honestly i got tired of reading them having sex.

Sanura’s character description got me confused, according to her age, she was portrayed a lot more mature, felt like she was 30 years old. I missed reading professors POVs, They could have the book more romantic.

Sanura, or kitty, lost her father and wanted to reconnect with her father’s heritage. So she decided that she wanted to become an archeologist. Kitty was accepted to an 8 week digging program in Egypt. This is where she meets Dr. James Campbell. The passion between these two...lawd!!! I did hope there there was more of a build up to their relationship though. That's probably the only complaint. Honestly, more I read STEM Romances, the more I gradually become more into this. It was very exciting and I loved the whole Egyptian adventure.

This is my first book by Victoria Woods and definitely excited for more!!

first things first, can we please talk about how gorgeous that book cover is? I could not stop staring at this beauty and that's what drew me to this book first.

The tropes had my heart from the start. Here we have some delicious forbidden love, a classic mentor × student romance, a jealous & protective guy, and a badass woman in STEM. As if that's not enough to pique your interest, there's the added mystery of a temple built for the legendary pharaoh Tutankhamen. I was hooked from the very first page.

Speaking of characters, lemme introduce you to Sanura aka Kitty Taha and Dr. James Campbell. These two had me cheering for them since day one. Sanura's love for knowledge and James' jealousy mixed with protectiveness? Hot damn, that's a recipe for some serious fireworks. And when the jealousy scenes turn into something more? oh boy, they'll leave you fanning yourself and craving a cold shower 👀

Victoria definitely knows how to blend the fluff and the smut in a way that leaves you chuckling and fanning yourself all at once. Get ready for some hilarious misunderstandings, playful banter, and steamy scenes that will make you need a cold shower afterward. 🤭

One thing I absolutely must mention is how impressed I am with Victoria Woods' attention to detail in her research. As someone who's had an obsession with Egyptian pyramids since childhood (hello, #PyramidEnthusiast), I bow down to the author's commitment in bringing the historical aspects of the story to life. Trust me, you'll feel like you've been transported straight to the land of pharaohs and mummies!

So, my loves, if you're looking for a read that will make you laugh, blush, and fulfill your pyramid obsession all at once, "A Discovery: Love and Other Things" is the book for you. It was almost like a forbidden steamy version of the Mummy and I was HERE FOR IT. Get ready for a very wild ride with Sanura and James as they navigate their forbidden love, unravel the temple mystery, and leave you fervently flipping those pages until the very end <3

thank u Passion Author Services and Victoria Woods for providing me the ARC <3

Wow, this was a new author for me and I was in love with this book. It was perfect!!
Kitty (Sanura) was on an excavation internship for 8 weeks in Egypt.
James Campbell was the professor leading this project.
So they're off limits already.
But they started off on the wrong foot literally and then things hot heated. I think they had instant attraction and it was that making them defensive when they clashed.
I absolutely loved how possessive James was. He saved her one day and the sparks started to fly from then. Despite fighting it (and not very well haha) these two were on a crash course. Their relationship progressed quite quickly and it was soo hot!!!! They had a lot of angry segs and my gosh it definitely made me feel things.
I also loved the archaeology side of things. It was all well researched and written professionally. I found it all very interesting. There are other characters in play that could danger this secret relationship, because it's Forbidden and they both could lose everything they have worked for.
With the end looming, what will happen to their relationship as they're from 2 different countries.
Can they keep it a secret until then? Will they be caught? Is their a future for them both?
Great character development and fantastic plot line. The steam was perfect too.
It was from only Kitty's POV. I usually like dual POV. I really wanted to know what he was thinking and his point of view. Despite it being one sided, shockingly I thoroughly enjoyed it. This was a fun, entertaining and heart racing story and highly recommend.
I can't wait to read more from this author.

Favourite Quotes:

“And I don’t take too kindly to being disobeyed.” His severe gaze held mine. “So don’t tempt me,”

"His palm landed against my bare ass, stinging my plump flesh. “Knock it off. I’m the only one who gets to mark this body from now on, understand?”

“Kitten,” he groaned. “You’re turning my world upside down, and I haven’t a clue on how to navigate this.”

First WOW! You awakened something dormant in me that I didn't know I missed. As a kid I loved learning about hieroglyphics and Egyptian Gods, Goddesses and Pharos. This book was not only romantically forbidden but kind of educational as well.

Kitty lost her father when she was younger and wanted to find a way to connect to him and her heritage. She fell in love with archaeology especially Egyptian archaeology. Being half American and half Egyptian it was perfect for her. She got accepted into a very rare internship and thought all her dreams would come true. She gets to go on her first dig and learn from the very famous Dr. James Campbell, while learning about where her father was from and hoping to connect to some of his family. Only one slight problem arose, Dr. Campbell isn't some old man with no attraction, no he younger and HOT. She definitely caught feelings for her professor. Maybe it's the forbidden desire or maybe there just something about him.

James is something else. He's forbidden, older and smart. He loves what he does and won't go easy on anyone for it. He came across this dig site, and it may be groundbreaking if only they can find some other clues to help distinguish who it belongs to. This job is the only thing he loves until Kitty walked on the site her first day. She instantly caught his attention, and his jealousy arose. She became something else for him, almost like hope in a human form. He became alive when he was with her, and they brought each other happiness. True love is willing to give up everything you love for just that one person!

Thank you, Victoria for Discovery of Love and Other Things. The title is beautiful and perfect for this story. Not only do Kitty and James discover love throughout the book but they do discover other things, like friendship, trust, artifacts and what true love was for Ankhesenamun (King Tuts wife) and why she did what she did. It was beautiful and eye awakening and makes me what to dive back into this world again!

Un descubrimiento: Amor y otras cosas
De Victoria Woods
Traducción al español: @athenetranslation
Booktour: @essensly

Desafortunadamente mis planes cambiaron y terminé estudiando algo completamente diferente.

*ARC Review*

I have been wanting an archaeology (about ancient Egypt) type book since watching a documentary about findings in Egypt, so jumped at the chance to read a book about what I was looking for and was really excited to find that I was selected to read an advanced copy!

That being said I was left wanting more. The scenes with the dig site, at the school were good but the chemistry between the FMC and the LI had me asking how did we get here? James is a hot youngish (late 30’s) Egyptologist and Sanura’s mentor. She doesn’t know what he looks like and thinks James is your typical older archeologist, enter her being shocked when she see’s what he looks like. I was able to look past her not doing any research on someone so important in her field of study because hello,Professor/Student and Age Gap, sign me up and it lets the story flow a bit.

Two interactions and James already has an issue with Sanura that is until she shows up at the site to ask when her suspension was up and they bond over findings and that’s where everything moves fast. I wanted to know how James became so enamored with her, how and why was he showing up in places Sanura was, yes I get that was gonna happen but why couldn’t James get her out of his mind, like I didn’t need his POV but let’s build up to them not being able to deny how they feel for each other instead of them jumping right into the spice.

There is spice, I didn’t mind it. Was I expecting James and Sanura to be like that? No. Was it all needed? I don’t think so, I would rather have more development to the characters and the story.

First book I have read by this author and I’d give another book by her a read. Overall it gently scratched the itch of my need for wanting something Egyptian/Archeology.
