Troll Princess Horra Fyd and young druid Rowan team up to reverse the evil Erlking’s spells and save the creatures across the Wilden Lands. However, Fairy Princess Glory Toppenbottom is still a thorn in Horra’s side. After Horra and Glory have a heated fight, Glory sneaks out of the castle. She is bent on finding the Erlking to reverse the hex he cast on her. This creates a political disaster when the Glory’s sister announces she’s coming to retrieve Glory.
Angered by Horra’s treatment of a royal guest, King Fyd proclaims Horra to be Queen Bearer. She becomes the ad hoc ruler, freeing her father from the scandal. Shocked, Horra assents. Her first move is to find the missing fairy princess before it becomes an interkingdom war. They form a search party and leave.
The Erlking stalks their every move. When the only choice points them toward the Riven, a cursed hidden land, they don’t hesitate. They find Glory is already there, but are immediately separated. The trio find the Riven is nothing like anyone imagined. Will they survive the Erlking’s magical traps, or will they, like everyone else, perish within its borders?
Dawn Ford writes wholesome fiction for Middle-grade, teen, and adult audiences.
Dawn adores anything steampunk, is mesmerized by shiny, pretty things, hoards shoes & purses, and needs at least one good, strong cup of coffee to wake her up a day.
Dawn’s novel, The Girl With Stars In Her Eyes, won the 2016 ACFW Genesis Award. Her novels Woodencloak and Mossycoat were finalists in Realm Maker's Realm awards.
I sure do love this series of good triumphing over evil with a lot of edge-of-your-seat suspense along the way. I never know what is going to stall Horra’s quest but it is sure to bring her more trouble to overcome. If you haven’t read any of the books in this series, don’t delay.
Tatterhood is a sweet middle-grade fantasy edge-of-your-seat type story that you’ll love. It’s also the third book in a series. This series should be read in order but if you absolutely can’t this can be read as a stand-alone novel.
There is something to be said for our younger people to read books where the good triumphs. Because so often in our actual world it doesn’t. Bad wins. Evil triumphs. It happens more than we’d like.
This novel gives a wonderful hideaway from the world around them. Because I firmly believe everyone needs a place they can get away to and books open up an amazing world for everyone.
The characters are wonderful. They may not live in our world but they face problems like us. They have to grow up and face their own worlds even if that’s not the world we’re a part of. A Troll princess must figure out what her world will be like when she’s Queen.
Friendships must be forged and alliances made. Good must find out how to triumph over evil. The book reads quickly. It held my attention and made me want to keep reading. This surprised me honestly since (1) I’m an adult and (2) I am not a normal lover of fantasy novels. I fully support this series though and all of my kids adore it. It’s made an amazing read-aloud.

Tatterhood was an adventurous journey back to the Wilden Lands. Tatterhood starts almost immediately where Mossycoat, the previous book ended so we find all the characters still recovering from those adventures.
The fairy princess Glory was very frustrating with her selfishness, but it was neat seeing her redemption arc forming in this book.
It was neat seeing the troll princess Horra become the Queen Bearer and begin to become who she is meant to be.
I have liked this series, this particular book was more on the slower side of the tales while still keeping an element of mystery that kept the story moving forward.
The story is set to continue, so it will be interesting to see what happens next in the series.
If you haven’t read the previous two books from the Band of Unlikely Heroes series, I would definitely recommend reading them first to fully enjoy the series.
These books have highlighted the journey of the characters and their growth as they are faced with problems that must be overcome. They are a nice, clean Middle Grade Fantasy Series.

I have truly enjoyed this unique middle-grade fantasy series. It was exciting to read the third book, "Tatterhood," in the Band of Unlikely Heroes Series. The characters are distinct, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know them in the first two books.
Troll Princess Horra Fyd still wonders about her future as Troll Queen. It’s impressive to see her grow throughout the series. In this adventure, she faced challenges that forced her to mature significantly. Other characters, like the young druid Rowen and the snobby fairy princess Glory, also experience growth in "Tatterhood." The villain, The Earlking, continues his evil actions, harming more people and creatures. The battle between good and evil is a central theme in this series, making it a great read for middle-grade audiences.
To fully enjoy Tatterhood, be sure to read book one and two first. This book ends with a clear hint of another coming soon, which is exciting. This fantasy series would be a fun read for families to enjoy together.
This fun fairytale is about a troll queen and her adventures. Its about her finding her place and coming to know and accept who she is. It’s also about good overcoming evil. This story is better read if you have read book 1 and 2 in the series first. Also, this story ends in such a way that it hints at a book 4 coming soon. An engaging fantasy story with plenty of mystery, action, and adventure, that young readers will thoroughly enjoy.

Once I started this book, I couldn’t put it down. It’s written for middle-grade children, but readers of all ages will enjoy the endless adventure, quirky characters, and epic battle of good against evil. You can’t help rooting for this band of unlikely heroes to overcome impossible odds to defeat the Erlking. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!
Tatterhood pretty much picks up right where Mossycoat left off, where we find all the characters recuperating from the events of the previous novel. The fairy princess, Glory, is quite unhappy, feeling like a prisoner in a castle not her own. The attitude and emotions are high between her and the troll princess, Horra, who is trying to figure out the next step in the fight against the Erlking. Her father, King Fyd, crowns her the Queen Bearer, and I enjoyed seeing Horra step up to fill the role, as these are some pretty big shoes to fill. Rowan was still a favorite of mine, as I get Groot vibes from him, and Princess Glory was just as annoying and frustrating to me as she was to Horra. Her selfishness truly knows no bounds, but I also love a good redemption story and hope to see her character continue to grow along with the rest of the cast.
I have really enjoyed this series so far, but I do feel like this novel was more on the slow side. There is some tension and a mystifying element that did keep things interesting for the most part, but I was craving more. Thank goodness this story will continue, as I am ready to see the Erlking finally get what’s coming to them.
If you haven’t read anything from the Band of Unlikely Heroes series, I highly recommend reading the series in its entirety. I am truly smitten with this world and all its inhabitants. There is intrigue, mystery, and the journey to finding what you’re truly capable of as you stand in the face of adversity. If you’re new to the fantasy genre, this is the perfect place to start. So good!

Tatterhood is the third book in Dawn Ford’s The Band of Unlikely Heroes series. Tatterhood continues pretty much where Mossycoat left off. Princess Horra’s kingdom faces continuing challenges against the Erlking. Horra also faces challenges with the conceited fairy princess, Glory, who thinks of herself first. Horra’s father, King Fyd, names her Queen Bearer and gives her the task of doing what it takes to keep the peace between their troll kingdom and the fairy kingdom. It was very interesting to watch the growth of both Horra and Glory as they learn to think of others before thinking of themselves. While The Band of Unlikely Heroes series has memorable characters and plot line, it would have been helpful to have a synopsis of the previous books at the start of this book to remind readers of the earlier parts of the story. Tatterhood ends in a bit of a cliff-hanger. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Tatterhood and the other books in The Band of Unlikely Heroes series would make an excellent addition to a K-12 Christian school library. The books in the series are appropriate for upper elementary and middle school-aged children. I received a complimentary copy of Tatterhood. This is my honest review.
Young Adult Fantasy books have become a new genre for me to read. I wasn't always interested in Fantasy books. Tatterhood by Dawn Ford is the most recent book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 3in the Unlikey Heroes Series. I have read this series in order now.
WOW, this book is probably the best in the series so far. Book 2 started slow for me and I truly wasn't anticipating enjoying this book from the start. I truly started reading it and could not put it down. The main characters in this book are Troll Princess Horra Fyd and The Earlking(a Villian). Princess Hora had to grow up quickly in this book, as she faced changes and challenges. I really LOVE that she stands p for herself and doesn't allow herself to be defeated. The Earlking really made the book interesting with his villian ways. The book is filled with Mystery, Fantasy and Suspense. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Fantasy, especially Middle School kids. GREAT BOOK!
I have enjoyed this series, and was thrilled to get a copy of "Tatterhood" to read and review! It picks up where "Mossycoat" left off, with Horra and Rowan facing the fallout of Erkling's spells. When her father gives her a job that includes working together with the fairy queen, life gets even more complicated. I am always looking for good books for my daughter to read that have a good lesson and are clean. I love that I have found that with this series! It would be an excellent series to add to a home or school library. I recommend reading the books in order.
I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.
Enemies, reluctant allies, and a troll princess....
Horra, Rowan, and the others have new battles to fight and a new mission to accomplish but they are facing an old enemy with some frightening tricks up his sleeve... For me, The Band Of Unlikely Heroes became an even stronger story in Tatterhood. Despite the fact that I am long past middle-grade age and usually stick with at least YA and older fiction, Dawn Ford engaged my attention and really kept me turning the pages. The edge of your seat adventure and vividly painted worldbuilding are well worth the time spent reading....
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
An amazingly realistic storyworld was created by Dawn Ford. I felt like I could live there, and while reading, I did. This is a middle-grade book and the third in a series (I now need to back up for the first two!). But like other middle grade series, it is entirely enjoyable by adults also.
The characters are strong, even when flawed (like real people), and the events proceed logically. Ford's writing style is at once engaging and her voice inviting.
Treat yourself and come live in Ford's world. I look forward to backing up and living there again soon in the earlier books.
Full of humor, insight, worms, special mud, and fun and creative characters - this book is great for middle grade boys and girls! I look forward to reading more in this series and following along on the rest of troll princess Horra's and her friends' adventures!
*I received an eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A great story. My granddaughter reads her books in two or three days. Dawn's books are not just for mid grade readers. Lots of adults enjoy them too. Her characters are so vivid and well done.
I am halfway through reading this book and I can't wait to get to the end! Hora and the other characters come alive and draw you into their adventures. Fun and exciting read!
