The Hitwoman and the Evil Ex

When the lingerie shop, The Corset, is trashed, everyone rolls their eyes, assuming that one of the owners left the shop unlocked and it was a crime of convenience.

But then a campaign of harassment begins, and Maggie realizes that the owners, her friend Armani and her Aunt Loretta, are in danger of losing what they’ve worked for.

Before Maggie can figure out who is threatening them, both women disappear.

Now Maggie must race to discover who is holding a grudge. One of Armani’s ex’s? One of Loretta’s? Or is it someone from Maggie’s past, who knows the best way to get to her is through those she loves?

Here’s Maggie in a nutshell in Jack the reporter’s words after Maggie said she was in the wrong place wrong time because of her dumb luck:

“‘Oh yeah, that’s you,’ Jack agreed in an almost sing-song voice. ‘Maggie Lee. The family screw-up who can’t hold down a job yet is the person everyone relies on and who seems to save lives on a regular basis. You have dumb luck.’”

That is very true. What Jack said describes Maggie to a T. All of her family relies on her for everything. If there is a small problem such as a quarrel amongst family members or friends, Maggie is called in to fix it. If there’s a huge problem like an abduction, the family goes to Maggie first for help. It’s crazy and you can bet there’s always some kind of drama swirling around Maggie.

And speaking of crazy, here is what Maggie told God when he told her she was crazy for even thinking of ambushing the house of a potential criminal without any backup: “‘Sometimes, being crazy is the only solution to what feels like an impossible problem.’”

And for further craziness, I had to put this book down when I was only about 25% of my way through because I was getting stressed and noticed my shoulders were tense. I needed to relax! Oh ya, and I needed to remind myself this is only a story and not real life. Guess I can get pretty involved in the lives of my book characters and forget about reality.

I love this series. The animals are so human and all heroes… all the time. Maggie relies heavily on her Rottweiler, the one-eyed southern sassy cat, her anole lizard, etc. Maggie has many many animal friends. I missed Benny in this one. I like his personality. He’s a sweetie. He’s a sweetie. He’s a sweetie.

There’s actually some new animal friends that joined Maggie’s menagerie. They are fast and like yelling things like, “Kill kill!” Tough girls with no qualms about attacking people and animals in their way.

Besides Benny, what I missed was Armani’s Scrabble tile fortune telling - there were no tile pulls, so no 7-lettered codes to figure out. I always look forward to the “pull,” but it was absent. Oh well, guess we’ll catch it in the next book.

A couple more things and I’ll wrap this review up. Will Piss’s real name ever be revealed and will Maggie ever find love, preferably with Nat?

Next misadventure with Maggie and the gang is Book 48, “The Hitwoman and the Jailbreak.” Release date April 24, 2025.

My next read is from the Murder by Design 8-book series by Erin McCarthy. The 8th book was just published today, March 7, 2025. Book 1 is “Gone With the Ghost.”

See you in my next review.

Maggie and her menagerie solve another murder

I've read every Hitwomanbook and love love the series. With Nat & Whitehat's help, plus all the talking animals, they save the day. Loretta and Armani are almost killed by gasoline and a lighter by the bad lady. What I didn't like there were parts left out and it didn't flow. I had no idea why Maggie was so mad at Nat. I had an idea since I read the last book. Towards the end Herschel was feeding the barn animals and Nat offered to help. Suddenly Herchel was in the house unless I missed something. I have no idea how Nat, Loretta and Armani were saved and taken out of the hole they were being kept in. Griswald had a job to do with Maggie to follow a woman whose husband thought she was cheating. There was no mention of the husband or what they reported to him.

not her best

Book 46. My gosh this series is eternal. Once again, this book suffers from a serious lack of editing. It’s getting harder and harder to warrant spending actual money on these books, because they’re also getting shorter and shorter.

Once again, Maggie is dragged in too many directions. She’s tired, grumpy, rude, and emotional throughout this series but every time it seems like she’s improving, she takes a massive step back. It’s gotten exhausting.

Maggie’s behavior in this book was abhorrent. The way she treated Nat…I nearly threw my phone. I don’t understand why she’s so hotheaded and illogical now. This is not a good development.

The new super abrupt endings are driving me crazy. They’re neither cliffhangers nor actual endings anymore. Just a random line then BOOM. THE END. Why??

Once again Maggie and her menagerie save the day. Don't consider that a spoiler alert however... This is book #47. News Flash! The animals ALWAYS save the day with their loyalty, bravery, and quick assessment and reaction time. When trouble attacks two of her aunts and her good friend, Maggie goes into battle mode. Long time readers of the series will enjoy some of the interactions Maggie has with the very people who usually order her around. I loved this book and feel like it's a pivotal book for Maggie. Regardless, it is a fast paced, tension filled book that was over way too soon. (Confession time: I always feel the books are over too soon!) Another win for author J. B. Lynn...it's a fantastic book and series.

Armani is confronted with a deadly ex and she and Loretta are kidnapped. Maggie is on the case with Patrick, Nat, & Jack. The family is in turmoil as the search comes up empty. Family is everything to Mags and the pets and she will stop at nothing to find her bestie and aunt. Frolicking fun time and misadventures. Little disappointed on how Maggie treated Nat and hope that the relationship develops over time. The falcons made an appearance and hopefully more in the future. Looking forward to the next mystery.

Another hit from the queen of murder mysteries!

This book, as are all of J.B.Lynne's Hitwoman's books, my guilty pleasure and escape. All of the Hitwoman's books are great, but they just keep getting better and better. I've fallen in love with all of the characters, human or animal, and I can't wait to read the rest. Please don't stop writing this series, I love it and tell everyone about the books.

Love this Series!

Another home run for this author! The plot has twists and turns, and the humor with the critters is an all time high. Could not put the book down determined to find out how it ends. Sad part is that it is finished…now what? Hurry up JB and finish the next sequel!

emotionally drained

She is out f her league and grumpy. I feel like she has it out for everyone. Her emotional dial is turned all the way up that she is endangering her relationships. This job is getting too close to home and they all have a problem. I hope she can get her shit together after she closes the case

Dumb Luck

Poor Nat. He is such a good guy, and Maggie is so hard on him. When Armani and Loretta are kidnapped he makes the break in the case. I stead of a thanks he practically gets a swift kick in the family jewels. I think Maggie might need some talk therapy. Is there an animal that would make a good therapist?

Exciting

Never a dull moment with Maggie Lee. Multiple issues drive Maggie to emotional distraction. Loyalty to family and friends give her the crazy ideas she acts on. This series is always exciting and surprising.

Fun

These books are such a fun read. I love Maggie can relate to having kooky people in my family. The animals are my favorites Piss, DeeDee, are my favourites although I liked Godzilla better in the book. I'm rooting for a Maggie and Nat hookup.

Another exciting romp.

The 47th book is just as much fun, as the rest, to read. Delveccio seems more like family as this point Maybe Maggie is finally healed after Gino.

Another hit! Armani and Loretta are kidnapped and the crew comes to the rescue. There are several mysteries not solved so I’m sure they’ll be in the next book.

Another winner in the Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman series. Maggie is drawn by in to a series of terrible situations as someone takes aim at her aunt and bet friends ' store, eventually kidnapping them.

Maggie dives right in, with the assistance of her menagerie, intrepid reporter, a guy she doesn't trust, and a detective who moonlights as a hitman.....what could go wrong?

This novel is filled with all the craziness you expect in this series. If you want a humorous mystery, you have found it in this book. While part of a series, this is a stand alone novel, however it's so good that you really owe it to yourself to read them all. The author is on my must read authors ' list.
