Ten years ago, Lord Branwell Mallory was young and in love with the perfect future ahead of him. Now he’s an injured and scarred ex-soldier with a future he barely knows how to build. The past, however, isn’t quite finished with him yet…
But when they meet again…
Once upon a time, Lady Artemis Keating believed in true love. Since then, she’s discovered a knack for helping injured creatures. But she never expected Bran would be one of them—especially after he left her without a word, alone and desperate.
Can they rewrite their future to find forever love?
Forced to work together, Bran and Artemis discover their past isn’t what either of them believed. As passion reignites and they discover each other anew, can trust blossom and true love finally prevail?
USA Today bestselling author Sofie Darling’s passion for historical romance began in middle school the moment she cracked open Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. An instant and enduring love affair was born.
Sofie spent much of her twenties raising two boys and reading every romance she could get her hands on. Once she realized she simply must write the books she loved, she finished her English degree and set pencil to paper. (Ticonderoga #2 is her quill of choice.)
When she’s not writing heroes who make her swoon, Sofie enjoys a nice weekend hike, a visit to a crumbling medieval castle whenever she gets the chance, and a slightly codependent relationship with her beagle, Bosco.

A second chance romance begins in flash back, when the second son of an earl and the young daughter of a duke, fall in love. Torn apart, they meet again ten years later. Slowly they begin to build a relationship, not as before, but as a new beginning. Many obstacles to overcome and secrets to reveal. Very heated descriptive sex. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from NetGalley.
This is my 17th book by Sofie Darling. I just started reading her December 31, 2024. I am so glad I asked about her in my steamy FB group because she is definitely steamy and gets such great depth with her characters and her storylines. Plus I love a good book cover and she has such pretty book covers. 😊
One thing, is I certainly forgot how hot her books were. I mean I read book 4 in this series over 200 books ago so didn’t really remember how steamy she was but DAMN!!!! Super hot. I loved Bran and Artemis. Such a great read. I loved the storyline and the characters. I loved their individual story and their chemistry was off the chain. Hated her mother…what a bitch! It did start off a bit slow but then wow did it pick up. Such a great read. I will be adding this book to my favorite books read list for July, 2025.
They met, fell in love, discovered pleasure... and then he disappeared.
Artemis is a duke’s daughter who escaped every suitor ever since her first season ended on a dramatic heartrending low. She’s not too fond of society and, after her beloved race horse tragically died, she retired up north and opened her own animal sanctuary. Second son of an earl, Branwell joined the army, survived Waterloo and conquered Africa. A brilliant soldier until the day he wasn’t. He returns home a decade later to find his family penniless. Now a limping scarred mess, he accepts his godfather’s offer to train a race horse. If he succeeds, his little sister will at least have a season. Lo and behold, Bran’s eccentric godfather is Artemis’s thorn-in-her-side neighbour – and when he manoeuvres them into working together, old hurt roars back to life, but so do their hearts – and loins.
I absolutely loved this series from the start and I devoured this fifth book like the scrumptious, eagerly anticipated treat that it was! While Bran is new, Artemis has been around since the beginning, and finally learning her story was a riveting ride. These two wouldn’t have made it the first time around, and they know it. It’s second chance at its most enchanting; passionate, enthralling, witty and a little heartbreaking.
While The Race of the Century remains the red thread, the story focusses mostly on them and their intriguing slow burn with steamy interludes and a few curveballs, a lot of emotional healing, verbal sparring, secret admiration and plain old lust. The resurrection of their old love isn’t straightforward, especially when the past is still murky, and the force that separated them is still standing in the wings. There’s a ton of growth for both of them, and they nearly muck it up, but their happy ending is a fairytale on its own! A gorgeous page-turner and, what I fear, the last in a magnificent series! Do check them out, you won’t be disappointed!
Lady Artemis Keating is the sister of a duke. After the death of her beloved horse, she starts an animal rescue and sanctuary Artemis hears rumors that Branwell, the man who abandoned her ten years ago, is staying with her neighbor. She becomes involved in a certain racehorse’s training, which involves being around Bran. Artemis notices he is not the same man she once remembered or loved. Will Artemis and Bran learn the truth about their past relationship? Can they forget the past to forge a new relationship?
Lord Branwell “Bran” Mallory is the brother of an impoverished earl and a war hero. An unfortunate accident has left him scarred mentally and physically. His godfather entices him with an offer Branwell cannot refuse. If he can train the nonagenarian’s horse to win a particular derby, Bran can keep the prize money. However, the training must involve Artemis. Branwell fears that she sees him as another wounded soul in need of fixing. Will a new career path open for Bran? And does that future involve Artemis?
Artemis can also be classified as the wounded/tortured type. Her scars are located within, especially the heart. First, dealing with her mother’s mental abuse dressed up as parental concern. Then losing her precious horse in the middle of an important race. I adore how the latter circumstances prompted her to open an animal sanctuary, no matter what they were. Artemis did not allow the loss to close her off helping other less fortunate animals in need.
I am generally blasé when it comes to second-chance romances. It is my least favorite trope (unfortunately for me, it seems to be a favorite of most authors). However, when it is coupled with a wounded/tortured hero type, I do not mind much. And Branwell did not disappoint me! I like how he is still trying to come to grips with his body’s limitations. Such things are not easy to accept and move on from, even two years from the fact. And I like how he openly acknowledges that his inability to ride horses all stems from the mind.
WIN ME, MY LORD is the fifth book in Sofie Darling’s historical romance series, ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND RACING. I recommend reading these books in chronological order to better understand the participants and the preparations leading to the Race of the Century. The entire series revolves around horse races set in Regency times. I started late (third book) but that did not hinder my ability to follow the plot’s flow. I still need to read the second book, THE DUCHESS GAMBLE.
I wonder if the author plans to write a sixth book. Yeah, I know the great race is done and the winner announced, but I really want Blaze Jagger to get his happily-ever-after. It would be interesting to see him paired up with either Saskia or Viveca, Gabriel and Tessa Siren’s sisters (hero from THE DUCHESS GAMBLE and the heroine from WAGER WITH A SIREN). I shall be keeping my fingers crossed…
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book, given to me by Xpresso Book Tours/Oliver Heber Books via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. A historical romance full of longing and yearning, “Win Me, My Lord”, by Sofie Darling, features a wounded hero lost in sorrow and pain and an independend, vibrant heroine. I loved the second-chance Bran and Artemis try and explore after a long separation riddled with lies by third parties and misunderstandings. It was a hard, emotional journey for Bran to regain the zest for life after severe physical and psychological wounds acquired in battle. I liked watching the guarded hero thaw when urged to help his family, work with horses and, above all, meet again his long lost love, Artemis. Artemis is an intelligent, confident, energetic heroine. I liked the passion, desire, lust, deep connection between Bran and Artemis. I also liked the secondary characters and the setting. The interactions involving horses and animals were interesting. I felt the story dragged in the middle and the sexual encounters seemed drawn out. Sometimes the relationships and interactions seemed too modern.
I’ve been excited to learn more about Artemis, & her story definitely didn’t disappoint. I think this might be my favorite of the series. That’s no small feat, as I truly like them all. I’m a sucker for a second chance romance, & this one really pulled @ my heartstrings. Artemis has been a likable character from the start. Her appearances in the other books in the series establish her as a strong, smart, loyal, & kind woman who has channeled heartbreak into a labor of love. She uses her estate as an animal rescue & rehab facility. It’s hinted @ in another book that Artemis once had a special gentleman court her, but things come much more into focus when her history w/Bran is revealed. It isn’t just the loss of her beloved horse that has torn apart her heart. Bran has mostly found his worth as an excellent soldier. When he loses that to injury, he struggles to find his place. His older brother may be an Earl, but he’s a complete wastrel. Bran wants very badly to help give his younger sister the proper introduction to society that she deserves. To seek the funds, he agrees to train his eccentric godfather’s race horse. This brings him back into an orbit w/Artemis once again. As eager as I was to get the scoop, it’s perfect that the history of their relationship is revealed a bit @ a time, as they get to know & trust one another again. There’s plenty of banter, wit, & steam to offset the angst brought on by revelations & details of their past. Thanks to the author for allowing me to read an advance copy via NetGalley.
Here's a fun excerpt from Bran and Artemis's meet-cute...
It was in a stable that he’d first encountered Lady Artemis Keating. Not at her come-out ball. That would happen a month later. Rather, they’d met weeks before, by chance. In her brother’s stable. Just past the stroke of ten at night. Bran had been visiting the Duke of Rakesley’s famed racing stable, Somerton, with his brother, who had only recently been elevated to the title of earl after the death of their father six months earlier. A young earl at seven-and-twenty, Stoke wanted to prove himself an up-and-comer by purchasing a Thoroughbred from the Duke of Rakesley, who was a young duke at twenty. Except Rakesley had been a duke nearly all his life and had nothing to prove to anyone—and possessed of all the arrogance such a view of oneself would produce. Seated comfortably in a leather armchair as they smoked cigars over postprandial brandies, Rakesley had regarded Stoke with a restrained manner of sufferance. Stoke wasn’t the first—or last—to appear to kiss the ring of the young, but powerful, Duke of Rakesley. Unable to watch his brother ingratiate himself to Rakesley, Bran had taken himself off to the stables. Though they were to conduct the Thoroughbred business the next day, he’d wanted to see Somerton’s renowned stables for himself first. They didn’t disappoint. The stables that housed the Thoroughbreds were nothing less magnificent than a medieval cathedral, from its soaring vaulted ceiling supported by massive stone columns to its immaculately clean, herringbone red-bricked floor. It was with no small amount of awe that Bran walked down the center aisle, peering into the boxes of the best horseflesh in England. He’d been only two-and-twenty, fresh out of Cambridge, and attempting to figure out what it was he wanted to do with his life. His first and foremost love was horses. He had a way with them. If he were a less titled personage, he would’ve been a trainer. But with the Lord in front of his name and no money behind it, he would have to go about it in a different way. He just hadn’t quite worked it out yet. A figure appeared at the end of the aisle. A lady who immediately noticed him, the tilt of her head said. Confidence in her long-legged stride—it would only be a few months before he knew intimately how long—she marched toward him. She was dark of hair and eyes, with an olive complexion that thrived beneath the sun, and possessed of a neat little dimple in the center of her chin. But the part of her beauty that unexpectedly captivated him was her smile. A smile that allowed one to see straight into her soul and know it for all that was pure and bright. Curiosity shone in her dark, luminous eyes. “Are you the earl or the brother?” Those were her first words to him. “The, erm, brother.” Her directness put him on the back foot, even as he felt a responding smile pull at the corners of his mouth. “And you are?” “The sister.” Ah. Rakesley’s sister, Lady Artemis, who wasn’t yet out, and therefore hadn’t taken supper with them. “You’re Lord Branwell, then?” “I am.” “And are you as mad about Thoroughbreds as all the rest of the gentlemen of my brother’s acquaintance?” “I appreciate all horses.” He wasn’t so much defending himself as explaining himself. An important distinction. For a reason he didn’t yet understand, he wanted her to see him—to see he didn’t contain a mere single dimension. “Every type of horse has been bred for a different sort of labor—even racing is a labor—so shouldn’t we appreciate each as they are?” Lady Artemis’s eyes narrowed as she watched him speak, as if she were soaking in his every word—as if his every word mattered. “You know,” she said, at last. “I believe you.” A laugh startled out of him. “I haven’t given you any reason not to.” A smile pulled at one corner of lush, berry-red lips. “Oh, you wouldn’t believe all the sorts you can’t believe when it comes to horses. Something about these perfect, lovely creatures can bring out the ugliest nature in people.” That was the instant. The very instant Bran’s world inverted and he became ruinously besotted with Lady Artemis Keating. Her head canted subtly to the side. “What are you doing a month from now?” “Pardon?” “Will you be in London?” “I could be.” The little smile that tugged at the other corner of her mouth said she’d heard it—the conditional. He could be in London in a month’s time if … “My come-out ball will take place in a month’s time,” she said. “In London.” “Congratulations.” “I hope to see you there.” “I’m not sure I’m invited.” The smile about her mouth, twinkling in her dark eyes, grew mischievous. “Oh, you are.” With that—and with an unmistakably saucy toss of her head—she turned on her heel and marched herself down the center aisle the way she’d come. And like that, Bran found himself looking forward to a ball for the first time in his life. Now, he cast his mind back to their more recent encounter—the one from an hour or so ago. Though he’d only been able to make out the rough outline of her silhouette in the dim light, it was clear she wasn’t the woman he’d met a decade ago. She’d held no smile for him today. Nor he for her. Another surge of bitterness and frustration washed through him. Life just kept throwing one thing after another his way. Now, Lady Artemis. Well, as long as she kept to her side of the woods—and he kept to his—then there was no reason they had to cross paths again. If only life would consent to work that way, for once...
Tropes: 2nd chance romance; forced proximity; wounded warrior; Big Secret Steam level: 3 Language: a couple appearances of the f-bomb, if that offends you Part of a series, and best if read in order, due to the involvement of previous characters in the plot. TW: miscarriage
3.5 stars bumped up because it's hard not to be drawn in by this author's characters, world building, and the quality of the writing (although a few words and phrases became repetitive here). I had been looking forward to Artemis' book ever since she was introduced in this series. The second chance template isn't one of my favorites, though, and here it dovetails into a trope that may be my least favorite.
Still, the first half of the book moves along at a good clip, with plenty of tension. I enjoyed how everything opened with the sly, meddling neighbor, and Bran and Artemis gradually grew closer over their shared fascination with horses. The descriptions of the natural scenery and the training were almost poetic and the tone was different, more thoughtful, than your standard romance. But once the race was over it was the usual house party, awful mom interference, etc.
I did like the MC's, together and separately. Although Artemis is perhaps overly naive, she is compassionate and kind. Bran is very easy to root for. Steamwise I LOVED the bathtub scene but later felt the sex scenes started to become the focal point of their relationship. I would have preferred for Bram and Artemis' relationship to dig slightly deeper into their early emotional connection.
Overall, this book isn't my favorite in the series, but it's still compelling. I would not recommend starting with it, however, as many of the characters from previous books play a role in important scenes.

Lady Artemis Keating, sister of the Duke of Rakesley, has found solace in the countryside after the heartbreaking loss of her cherished Thoroughbred, Dido. In her grief, she’s created a sanctuary for injured and abandoned animals that offers second chances not only to them, but to herself. She has heard talk of Lord Branwell "Bran" Mallory's visit to Sir Abstrupus Bottomley's estate, who is Bran's godfather and her next-door neighbor. This brings up memories of her heartbreak over the love of Bran, who abandoned her ten years ago, without a word, not even a "good-bye".
Bran, has returned a war hero and brother to a wastrel earl, carries physical and emotional wounds from a brutal military patrol attack. His eccentric godfather has offered him a lifeline and it's one he can't refuse. He is to train his godfather's Thoroughbred, Radish, to win a horse race, and if he succeeds, Bran will earn the entire winning purse and a perhaps a chance to pursue a new career in training horses for the titled lords. The only catch in the horse training is he must include Artemis in the process of training Radish.
Reluctant and wary, Bran fears Artemis will see him as just another creature in need of rescue, and he still harbors resentment over her betrayal in the past. But Artemis sees a different man now, one forged by loss and pain. As Radish’s training brings them closer, old wounds resurface, buried truths emerge, and they begin to rediscover what they once shared. Can they overcome the lies and betrayal that kept them apart by outside sources? Can Bran finally accept his body's physical limitations and conquer his mental fears and ride again?
Sofie Darling delivers another emotionally rich, beautifully written installment in her horse-racing Regency series. Her characters shine with depth and vulnerability, and the romance gallops forward with heart and heat. I highly recommend reading the series in order to appreciate the journey leading up to The Race of the Century. From delightful secondary characters to a pitch-perfect blend of humor and passion, this story is a winner. And fingers crossed, we need a happily-ever-after for Blaze Jagger!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Win Me, My Lord is the fifth book in Sofie Darling's All's Fair in Love and Racing series and is a beautifully written story that pulls on readers' heartstrings and doesn't let go until the last page finishes with the words, The End.
Lady Artemis Keating, younger sister to the Duke of Rakesley and owner of an animal sanctuary at Endcliffe Grange in Yorkshire, fell instantly and madly in love with Lord Branwell Mallory at her come-out ball when she was 19, and he with her. But Fate was not on their side when lies and doubts pulled them apart only four months later. Believing Artemis would be marrying his older brother, the dissolute Earl of Stoke, Bran joined the British Army and left England, only to return home 10 years later a scarred shell of his former self after a near fatal injury on his horse in South Africa. But did their love die when they were torn asunder, or has it survived, dormant and just waiting to come to life and grow once more?
This book, like many of Darling's others in the series, is extremely well-written, with lyrical prose and deep insight into her two main characters, Bran and Artemis, who are complex and multi-layered. Their story of a second chance at love has supremely tender moments, hefty steamy scenes (as there is no shortage of physical attraction, desire and want, want, WANT between these two), appearances by characters we've met in previous stories as well as some unmanaged mischief from their very own matchmaker in the form of nonagenarian, Sir Abstrupus Bottomley, Bran's godfather. It also has many of my favorite tropes including a scarred military hero, as a take-off of the Beauty and the Beast trope, as well as grumpy-sunshine, forced proximity and former lovers. I did have some difficulty reconciling myself with some of the decisions Artemis made, both in the past and in the present, and I found it a bit unsettling that she would lie to Bran (I'm in the camp that believes a lie of omission is yet a lie), given lies and lack of honesty are what pulled them apart in their youth. I understood her rationale, but in my opinion, it took her too long to be fully open with him about events in their shared past. I'm also not a huge fan of either main character believing they are not worthy of the other person, but then not using that consideration to motivate them to better themselves or pull themselves up to a higher standard of honesty - or at least not doing so until the end.
Still, I enjoyed this book and was delighted Bran and Artemis were able to find their way back to each other. And I'm looking forward to reading the next two books in the series involving Tessa and Gabriel's younger sisters, Viveca and Saskia. Who will be Saskia's love interest, I wonder? Will it be Liam Cassidy??? Or someone else?

I received an Advanced Reader Copy for free from NetGalley, and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.
Thank you NetGalley. This story started years ago when Artemis and Bran fell in love but her mother, the Duchess put herself in the middle of their lives. Artemis should have gone to her brother to get permission to marry instead he knew nothing about what was going on. Bran went off to the war and in an accident he was injured. He is back to train a horse for racing. they feel their love is there again but there are things from the past must be resolved before they ca go on. There are still many ups and downs to settle. Will they make? They have some who are wanting it to be their time and then those who are against them.
Very good story between Artemis and Bran. A story of love and loss, heartbreak and hope. These two characters have had their fill of up and downs in life, together and apart. Very good through to the end!

“Win Me My Lord,” the fifth installment in Sophie Darling’s captivating All’s Fair in Love and Racing series, is a must-read—especially if you’ve been following the series, which is better if read in order. Set against the exhilarating backdrop of horse racing, this tale gallops through history, weaving romance and rivalry all the way to the climactic Race of the Century. Darling manages to make the horse racing details engaging without letting them overshadow the heart of the story, the romance.
Lady Artemis Keating, sister to the Duke of Rakesley, is nursing not one but two heartbreaks—first from Lord Branwell Mallory a decade ago, and now from the loss of her cherished Thoroughbred, Dido. Seeking solace, she pours her heart into an animal sanctuary she’s created, offering refuge to creatures in need. But her world shifts when she’s invited to a midnight dinner at her neighbor Sir Abstrupus Bromley’s estate. Rumors swirl that Lord Branwell Mallory might be visiting, but she doesn’t expect to see him at the table.
Bran, scarred both physically and emotionally from his time in the war, struggles to find his footing in civilian life. His godfather, the delightfully eccentric Sir Abstrupus, offers him purpose through the training of his prized Thoroughbred, Radish. I adored Sir Abstrupus, with his scheming yet warm-hearted nature, and big heart, he adds a charming layer to the story.
That midnight dinner sets the stage for a fiery reunion. Bran and Artemis’s shared past crackles beneath the surface as they’re thrust into working together to train Radish. The emotional tension is palpable, their unresolved feelings simmering with every interaction. Betrayals from the past haunt them, but so does the undeniable pull of their lingering affection.
Artemis shines as a heroine determined to uncover the truths that fractured her heart, even when it means confronting the painful reality of her mother’s role in her heartbreak. I admired her courage in seeking the truth and her grace in comforting her mother, despite the pain caused. Though somewhat naive in believing her mother always had her best interests at heart, Artemis’s strength truly emerged when she confronted her and firmly stood her ground.
Bran’s journey was equally compelling. As he navigated his vulnerabilities, he struggled to recognize his worth beyond his scars. His eventual realization of his inherent value was deeply moving. His unwavering love and support for his sister highlighted their profound bond, and his sincere desire to see her happy and settled exemplified the good man he is.
Sofie Darling crafts an unforgettable second-chance romance, rich with betrayal, longing, and passion. Win Me My Lord is a heartfelt, emotionally charged journey that will tug at your heartstrings, leaving you breathless and eager for more. Prepare to be swept away by the intensity of love, loss, and the hope of redemption. This isn’t just a love story—it’s an emotional race to the finish line that you won’t want to miss.

Thanks to Booksprout for a copy of this book and this is my freely given opinion.
This is the fifth book in the series and this is another one where I read a couple of book and out of order and as there are interconnected relationships and an overarching plot of the horse racing, I probably would have enjoyed it more if I actually read the books in order. On saying that, this is a story of two young people, Lord Branwell Mallory, a second son of an Earl, and Lady Artemis Keating, the young daughter of a Duke, who met and fell in love. But circumstances caused them to be bitterly parted, each thinking the other betrayed them.
Years passed and Bran, who left England to forge a career in the Army, is forced to return after a near critical injury. He is bitter and broken, but forced to surface from his despair when his godfather forces him to visit and makes him an offer he cannot refuse - to train a young horse to race with the incentive to keep the pot if he wins. Bran does not have much impetus and motivation at present, but the winnings would be enough to help launch and dower his younger sister, as his wastrel brother, the current Earl has beggared the estate and would not take such responsibility for her future.
What he quickly comes to realize though is just how much more his godfather is interfering in his life when he is confronted with his past, as Artemis is also his godfather's neighbour, and the conniving and eccentric meddler forces the two of them to work together. Artemis and Bran are initially at loggerheads, both being emotionally scarred by the past, but that remembered love, and spark of attraction has never gone away, and of course with time and proximity, that spark grows into a fire.
This is a steamy enemies to lovers, second chance romance. Bran and Artemis, despite their mutual feelings of bitterness and betrayal against the other, cannot help but remember their past and find their way to each other again. But they must also resolve their pasts to find a future together, and in finding out about the truth of the past, discover that there were other malignant forces seeking to keep them apart, and some truths are very hard to take.
A story that had some very interesting and appealing characters including the eccentric meddling godfather, and an the villainess of the piece, an arrogant snobbish narcissist who again is a fine example of why trimming diseased limbs off a family tree is not a bad idea. Considering what a malignant presence she is and how clueless she is regarding her children and their happiness, it really feels like this character's story is a bit unfinished as she neither gets truly punished for her actions nor gains any real self awareness, or shows remorse. There is the overarching theme of horse racing and competitiveness and Artemis wins my approval for her love of animals - and anything with animals is positive IMO. Though in regards to that, there should have been more animal cuteness, and not enough of her three legged dog.
“Win Me, My Lord” is book five in Sofie Darling’s series All’s Fair in Love and Racing. Set in Regency England in the circle of horse racing friends and their loved ones is the story of Lord Branwell Mallory, a medically discharged soldier of rank whose leg was crushed when his horse was fatally shot while serving in Africa. He no longer rides horses and moves about with a painful limp. His life is in a sorry state at the beginning of the book. While staying with his godfather Sir Abstrupus he is reunited with former love Lady Artemis Keating. Artemis is living at a neighboring estate where she has established an animal rescue and shelter. Lies, secrets, misinformation, manipulation, and Artemis’s mother broke the couple up ten years prior, each believing the worst of each other. But the sizzling connection and heat between them is as strong as ever as the Bran and Artemis peel back the layers of the past so both could understand the truth of what happened and where the fault truly lies. The story is romantic and passionate as Bran and Artemis get to know the now versions of themselves apart from their past selves. Both characters are written with thoughtfulness and care, each struggling with loss and heartbreak. Ms. Darling has done a remarkable job with Bran as he struggles with his memories of war and the events surrounding his devastating injuries when he almost lost his leg. His deep seeded fear of mounting a horse again is quite understandable and fits the character as he attempts to settle into a civilian lifestyle. As Artemis is reinserted into his life the looming grey clouds begin to lift as Bran begins to see hope for the future. The lovable, eccentric Sir Abstrupus was definitely a scene stealer. He noticed everything even though he never left his estate. Characters from earlier books in the series were incorporated into this story, now taking on supporting roles. An enjoyable part of a series is spending time with earlier characters and getting an update on how their lives are progressing. The antagonist of this story is definitely the dowager Duchess of Rakesley, the mother of Artemis. I definitely got a cold chill whenever she appeared on a page. That woman was a self serving bully. Overall, the story is well thought out and written with characters that fit perfectly into the plot. This wonderful world has blossomed and grown over the course of the five installments in the series, yet it can be read as a standalone historical romance. I definitely recommend “Win Me, My Lord”. Book six is on the horizon, I can’t wait!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review, my thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Wow, what a great story for the ending of a wonderful series. There are a lot of very long reviews for this book. First, I would recommend reading the books in order. You can enjoy the books as stand-alone, but each book has history that follows thru the rest. Lord Branwell Mallory is the second son of an Earl. He was just fresh from school when he with his brother the new Earl met with the famous Duke of Rakesley, Rake. When he tires of watching his brother try to empress the duke he goes to the stables to see the horses. This is where he first meets Lady Artemis Keating not a ballroom or social event. He can’t believe the beautiful lady is just as crazy about horses as he is and has invited him to her coming out ball! So starts a very hot romance between then with both falling in love quickly. Till her mother, the Duchess ruins her life. Artemis believed in love and after meeting and being with Bran she felt she had found her match for life, till he left her and joined the service! Heartbroken and alone she also loses her dear horse overcome with grief she moves to the country and starts a home for wounded animals. She is happy and content till her past shows up in the form of Bran after ten years! He is an ex-soldier who is injured and scarred. He is staying with his eccentric god father, Sir Abstrupas Bottomley to train a horse for him. But his god father has secrets up his sleeve for both Artemis and Bran. This story is full of secrets, hidden truths and loss. There is much of the past neither knew nor understood. As all comes to light will they be able to deal with everything and look to the future? You need to grab a copy and find out. Am sorry to see this series end it was great. I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
A Spicy Second-Chance Romance with Hooves, Heartache, and Heat
This is book five in Sophie Darling’s All’s Fair in Love and Racing series, and while it can be read on its own, fans of the series will enjoy revisiting the racing world she’s created.
We’ve got a second-chance romance between Lord Branwell Mallory and Lady Artemis Keating, who once shared an intense love affair ten years ago before circumstances tore them apart. Each believed the other had abandoned them, but the truth—buried by an outside force—is far more sinister.
In the intervening years, Artemis has built a refuge for horses and animals on her estate (love her independence and compassion 💕🐎), while Branwell has returned from brutal campaigns on the continent and in Southern Africa, scarred both physically and emotionally. When they collide again—he's training a horse for a big race on her land—their wariness slowly gives way to rediscovered desire.
The first half is a slow-burn rekindling, full of wary glances and simmering tension. Around the two-thirds mark, the pacing dipped for me—I thought we’d already reached the resolution—but then the real reason for their painful separation is revealed, adding a much-needed jolt of drama in the final act.
This is one of the spicier historical romances I’ve read, and Sophie Darling writes those moments with flair—they felt earned, not gratuitous. The emotional payoff at the end was satisfying, even if the middle dragged a little.
All in all, a strong entry in the series—great characters, a juicy second-chance setup, a blend of racing and romance, and a good dose of spice. The pacing hiccup keeps it from a perfect score, but I’ll happily round up to ⭐⭐⭐⭐.
Ten years ago, Lord Branwell Mallory and Lady Artemis Keating had a beautiful future ahead of them. Now Bran is a scarred former-soldier looking for direction...until he is offered an opportunity that might change his fortunes and allow him to provide a dowry for his sister. Over the years, Artemis has discovered a knack for helping injured creatures...but she never expected Bran would be one of them. Forced to work together, they reignite a connection that never died.
This is the fifth book in the All's Fair in Love and Racing series. The final horse race that the series has been building towards happens in this story, so I would recommend reading in order. I don't think the stakes would matter as much to a new reader who hadn't experienced the other stories.
Artemis has experienced many losses in her young life but, finding Bran again lets them both learn the truth about their separation and begin to heal. Sometimes second chance plots with a large time gap separation tend to focus too heavily on lies and misunderstandings. While there's a little bit of that here, I didn't feel like it took over or dragged on too long. Both characters made acknowledgements early on, and then leaned into their chemistry, which I appreciated. It was an enjoyable read with emotionally rich characters, good heart, and plenty of feels. 4.5 stars rounded to 5.
Tropes: Second Chance, Spinster, Beauty & Beast/Scarred Hero
The started out well. I was intrigued with Brans background story that explained how he arrived home in the condition that he’s in. From how well the synopsis explained, I presumed that that Bran would come home as an invalid tho be on the mend and to be tended to by his long lost love. No. I didn’t get that. I found Artemis character to most charming and wonderful. She is well suited for Bran. Living at home with her family of animals is the most glorious thing that can befit a woman who loves to give back to the injured and helpless in need of tending. The story is a like able story for a person who likes horses. I’m sorry, I really struggled with this book. My attention was lost so many times while reading. I love a good story about a horse race and a couple enjoying the victory, but it was the details from day one at the dining room table to the day of picking the jockeys clothing. And then the day after the race there where people added to the story that I have no clue who the heck they were. Bran and Artemis are not even in the chapters. I was totally lost. I was defeated. This is a talented writer so, it could be my off day for reading. I normally am shouting to the roof tops about the book that I’ve have recently read from her. So, like I said it could be my off day for reading. Until next time. I love to read them/ review them gal. Read on!
What a heartwarming, emotional, well developed and exceptionally well written story of a second chance at love, despite the obstacles already in the way, and those that life itself provided in the ten years of separation.
Artemis and Bran met and fell in love, but were separated. They get together again, after they both have suffered much loss, and this time they will not let this chance go to waste. Artemis is a kind-hearted, intelligent heroine, who tends to believe in the best in everyone. Bran is a disillusioned wounded soldier, who bears injuries and scars (apparent, but also invisible) and yet he remains strong, and acts nobly and honorably at all times. If you like a wounded hero trope (and I very much do), Bran is a wonderful one.
Sophie Darling is a new to me author and I really enjoyed her style of writing. The plot developed quickly, every chapter was adding to the enjoyment of the storyline and the romance was steamy. I very much enjoyed the supporting characters and will need to go back to read their stories. Finally, the nonagenarian’s name was so awesome and fitting - Sir Abstrupus.
I very highly recommend this novel, the advance copy of which was provided to me by NetGalley and Oliver Heber books. These opinions are my own.
A million stars I love Sofie Darling! As one of my favorite authors her stories never disappoint. The "Alls Fair In Love and Racing" series is one of my favorites. This adventure fits right in. Lady Artemis Keating fell in love at 19 with Lord Branwell Mallory. When Branwell hears that she is supposed to marry his brother instead heartbroken he joins the British army. Artemis is fine with not marrying. She thinks she has learned to close her heart off from others because of past experiences. She owns and runs an animal sanctuary, which means everything to her. Now Branwell has returned and so have those hidden feelings. He was almost killed in South Africa but now returns home convinced he is of no use anymore. His scars add to his doubts. However, once again circumstances change everything. Now they need each others help. Will fate let them find each other again?
Darling's writing is always wondrous. She creates stories that grab you at the beginning all the way to the end, and you won't want it to end. Amazing characters, mystery, and passion reignited, lots of passion, all create an amazing story. As usual Darling is an amazing storyteller, with detailed characters and story.
You will love this story and trust me you need to read the whole series. Enjoy this romantic adventure for yourself.
Win Me, My Lord is a deeply emotional and beautifully written historical romance that proves Sofie Darling has mastered the art of the second-chance love story. Set against the sweeping backdrop of Regency England, this fifth book in the All’s Fair in Love and Racing series explores not only the rekindling of passion between two estranged lovers, but also the courage it takes to rebuild trust and identity after heartbreak and war.
Lord Branwell Mallory is a man haunted by scars both physical and emotional. Once a dashing young nobleman full of promise, he’s returned from war uncertain of his place in the world. Lady Artemis Keating, his former love, has found her strength in healing others wounded animals and wounded hearts alike but the return of the man who once broke hers shakes the foundation of her carefully built peace.
Darling’s prose shines with tenderness and restraint. The chemistry between Bran and Artemis is palpable, yet what truly stands out is the story’s emotional maturity. This isn’t just about rekindled love it’s about healing, forgiveness, and rediscovering one’s worth.
Fans of Mary Balogh, Lisa Kleypas, and Julia Quinn will adore Sofie Darling’s nuanced storytelling and her ability to weave redemption, longing, and hope into every page.
This story is filled with second chances, manipulating mothers, adorable animals and one war weary soldier. Artemis has lost a lot in her life, but still has a sunny disposition . Bran has lost a lot as well. They have lost each other. I adored Sir Abstrupus and his very eccentric ways. Artemis’s way of thinking was frustrating at times, and Bran’s inability to get out of his own head was understandable , given what he went through. Their chemistry was delicious and Artemis and her mother’s scene was priceless and much needed. That said, though I adored this book, i was absolutely stunned and incensed that the author decided she just HAD to add the f-bomb. Though only used 2-3 times, it was totally unnecessary and destroyed the entire scene for me. (Thus the 4 star rating)What is the infatuation with this word that this generation of historical romance writers just feel the need to use this word. I read this genre to get away from such crass language-I don’t read contemporary romance because of it. Please just stop destroying your stories with this awful language !.

The story follows Lady Sophie, who is determined to avoid marriage and scandal-proof her reputation, despite her unpredictable past. She meets Lord Branwell Mallory, the man who abandoned her ten years ago and is now a scarred ex-soldier. A man who is arrogant and utterly unsuitable. Forced to work together in training a racehorse, Bran and Artemis find themselves re-evaluating what they believed of their past. This is a delightful Regency romance full of charm and plenty of chemistry. What I enjoyed most was Sophie’s strong-willed nature. She’s witty, intelligent, and unafraid to challenge the expectations of her time. Camden, meanwhile, is the perfect foil—gruff but vulnerable, and slowly undone by a Sophie, who he can’t put aside. The tension built beautifully throughout this story. I found the pacing to be quick with plenty of witty dialogue. A quick, satisfying read with just the right balance of flirtation, emotional stakes, and historical flair. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have read all of the books in this series. Like the ones before this, I loved every minute of it. That said, if you haven't read any of the previous books, you can still read this one without feeling like you are missing anything.
This is one of my favourite tropes - second chance for love. Artemis and Bran should have been together 10 years ago. Lies and manipulation forced them apart. A little friendly manipulation brings them back into each other's orbit. Now they just need to find a way to move forward and take advantage of the chance they have been given.
There wasn't as much focus on horse racing in this book, less time on the turf, but more time at the stables and training yards. With a decent mixture of lighthearted moments, deep emotional ones, and happy and steamy ones, this book has it all.

This novel was the story of Bran and Artemis who fell in love at first sight, circumstances beyond their control tore them apart. They spent ten years apart thinking the worst of one another. They were reunited and discovered the truth and built a friendship that revealed that their love never died. I did enjoy the characters and the banter between some of them. The reconnection felt genuine and believable. Bran was a caring hero and Artemis was a loving heroine, but her naïveté did become annoying. It took too long for to realize how she was being treated by her mother. The story did a seem a bit wordy and long. There were parts that went on about the scenery and little details that I could have done without. This steamy story of second chances had supportive family, romance, humor, good characters with a good friendship group, manipulative, selfish family, people with eccentricities, and a HEA.
I wanted to weep for Bran and Artemis in this romance; however, without their losses and the grief that dominated their lives, there would have been no story. The attraction they experienced as young lovers has been somewhat tarnished, and yet there is still an undeniable attraction between them. Meeting again after 10 years, they are both filled with anger, yet they cannot help but want to reach out and touch each other once more. Unguarded words slip out, making them realize that what they believed may be flawed, and bit by bit, they piece the past together and discover that they have been manipulated, which resulted in them going their separate ways. Finally, they get their chance to clear the air, but even that comes with pain and disappointment. Despite one party manipulating them for the destruction of their relationship, there is the Sun King who once again brings them together once again gloating that he has played the major role in their union. I received a copy of this emotional and heartwarming romance as a gift through BookSprout, and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Ten years ago, Lady Artemis Keating met Lord Branwell Mallory, and thought they would be together forever. Suddenly, however, he was gone without so much as a goodbye. Now she spends her time rescuing animals and taking care of them on her estate. She is quite content with her life until Bran shows up, scarred from the war, at the neighboring estate. Sir Abstrupas Bottomley is Bran’s eccentric godfather. Sir Abstrupas wants him to train a horse. A love of horses is what brought Artemis and Bran together when they first met. What tore them apart? When the answer to that question finally comes to light, will they have a second chance? Is there a happy ending for them? If Sir Abstrupas succeeds in his matchmaking attempt, there certainly will be. Artemis and Bran are wonderful characters. Sir Abstrupas is awesome in his own way. The Race of the Century has finally come, and characters from the other stories in the series are here. Great addition to the series. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
