Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having a great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior, shaped by her interest in astronomy and standing stones.
1'5/5 Not that the reason behind Dovwing, Jayfeather and Lionblaze losing their powers wasn't nice to know, or how the cats were cooing after the Blood War and after the schism opened between those cats who went to the Dark Forest and the rest wasn't sth that needed addressing and fixing, but I think it could have been done with lesser pages.
I recently read this and Bramblestar's Storm (the two standalones that take place after The Last Hope) and I am so disapointed. They're not unenjoyable. But they are nothing special and definitely not the best examples of the Warriors series.
Firstly, I said this with Bramblestar's Storm, but it's also in Dovewing's Silence. The plot is all over the place. The title is "Dovewing's Silence", but it actually focuses very little on Dovewing coping with losing her powers. This needs another story, one that's done RIGHT. The main conflict in this novella is actually Thunderclan learning to trust the five cats who trained in the Dark Forest again. Even though in the end, those five chose to stand with Thunderclan, there is still some suspicion towards them. If that interests you, I think you'll love this. If you're looking for a book actually focuses on Dovewing, then stay away!
This is not something I want a newbie reading. Dovewing's Silence is underwhelming and SHORT, and it does not give the best impression of the Warriors saga. New to the Warriors series and don't know where to start? Here are my recommendations (in chronological order):
I loved this book, and to all warriors fans, this is the book for you! If you have not read the last hope yet, then I would do that before you pick this book up. All in all, it explains the details that everyone is dying to know: what happens to the clans, the prophecy, and the whole entire thunderclan dealing with what happens after the battle. GO FIRESTAR!!!
Awesome book. I was so glad when I saw for sure that Dovewing and Bumblestripe were together. Now that's a power duo almost as awesome as Katniss and Peeta!
Wow, this was amazing! It filled in a HUGE gap of what happened after the 4th arc! It was funny how she thought that she was basically deaf when she didn’t have her “super hearing”. Also, so if Rock and Midnight are ancients, and Dovewibg saw Firestar there… does that mean Firestar will become an ancient? This was really good, and I liked it a lot!
I just wasn't feeling this one like most Warriors books. I didn't like the changes in this book; it seems to close the door on my second most favorite story arc (after the original Warriors series) in a very un-epic way.
wish there was more focus on how dovewing actually copes with losing her powers, but rather it focuses more on thunderclan’s coping after the great battle with the dark forest. still very good tho

This was so sad but good! I think the first warriors novella I’ve read? And it was cute, really tied up the series. Idk how I feel about the whole powers thing but I think it’s good they get to kinda be normal now. I can’t believe they killed everyone that was awful
There is not a lot of story to this one and I have come to the conclusion that the novella format is probably not the right one for me. I will always enjoy reading of the clans however this one left me without any feeling of purpose or conclusion.
I still give this about 2 stars, same as the first time.
I saw someone else make the point in their review that this novella isn't REALLY about Dovewing's "silence" but more about the ThunderClan cats that allied with the Dark Forest trying to regain the trust of their Clanmates and that is so incredibly accurate. Dovewing losing her powers really takes a back seat in this novella which is a choice, certainly.
In books 4 and 5 of Omen of the Stars, when Dovewing traveled to and from the mountains, she had a weird similar experience with her senses. At first she saw way too much to the point it was incredibly overwhelming so she had to learn to control and localize her powers. Then when she returned to the lake, she struggled with letting her power stretch out to their normal potential again. And she was f r e a k i n g out over it. Here, where her powers disappear entirely, it's treated as just kind of a minor inconvenience.
Lionblaze and Jayfeather just straight up ignore her throughout as they deal with losing their powers as well, but I feel like this is uncharacteristic of at least Lionblaze. It just felt forced for plot. Also, I do NOT remember when Dovewing and Bumblestripe got back together? As of the Last Hope, she was still seeing Tigerheart at night and was thoroughly annoyed with Bumblestripe's existence, so this is a weird retcon to create more drama later.
The problem with the Warriors series is that important things happen in the super editions, novella and graphic novels. But there is no list or timeline avaiable that mixes all the different types of books. Sometimes I fell I've missed something big, only to disover it later in a super edition or whatever. Dovewing's novella is important. It begins directly where Omen of the Star left off, with the bodies of six ThunderClan Warriors lying in the clearing after the great battle. The two main plots involve the ThunderClan cats distrust and anger at the 5 surving cats who were trained by the Dark Frest and Dovewing's difficulties as she realizes she's losing her special power. Some of the novellas aren't important. This one shouldn't be missed.
I don’t get why people don’t like this book, it was one of the best novella’s from the warriors series i’ve ever read! I hate, and i mean hate Dovewing, (and Lionblaze) but this book was so well done. It had everything it needed to make and official end to the great battle. It told you the story of what they needed to do after the battle, and what happened to the three special ones. And it was short, and easy to read, so, why do people hate this?
Premise: The Great Battle with the Dark Forest has been won. But for Dovewing of ThunderClan, it feels as though all has been or will be lost in the harrowing aftermath. Firestar now hunts with StarClan; cats who have trained with the Dark Forest are no longer trusted; and Dovewing fears she may be losing her powers. As the Clans begin to take the steps necessary to recover, can the young she-cat help heal the rifts dividing her fellow warriors? More importantly, can she, Lionblaze, and Jayfeather discover what's happened to their powers?
Story/Writing: Having just read the haunting conclusion the "Omen of the Stars" arc, "The Last Hope," I must admit, I didn't know what to expect from this novella. That said, I was curious to see what the authors on the Erin Hunter team would bring to the table, and I was not disappointed! I really like it when authors tackle these types of stories. Sure, the ones with the big battles and the sweeping conflicts surrounding them tend to get the most press. But we're often left to wonder how those remaining deal with what happens afterward, especially the ones who fought on the frontlines. In this case, the Clans just fought perhaps the most devastating battle in their history, even though they emerged victorious. And I once again love how the authors bring up things that most of us probably wouldn't think of. Such as whether or not those who trained with the Dark Forest can be trusted. They also have a new leader and have lost some of their bravest and most beloved warriors. Not to mention, the Three have all lost their powers and must adjust accordingly. And I loved how all these things were portrayed here.
Characters: Man, these characters have got a lot to deal with just in this novella! You really feel like they're all struggling to move on given all the losses they've suffered and all the new changes they have to get used to. Some cats even have new roles and can't help but wonder if they're up to the task. Nonetheless, they make their very best effort and that's what matters most.
Dovewing – Since we mostly read through Dovewing's point of view during the final battle in "The Last Hope," I liked that this story of recovery and adjusting to change focused mainly on her. From the beginning she can tell something's wrong. She knows ThunderClan has changed, but she herself has changed as well. She's relied on her powers for pretty much all her life. Now that they're lost to her, it makes sense that she would feel blind and deaf without them. But she doesn't mope around either. She continues to help ThunderClan. She sticks with and stands up for the cats who once trained with the Dark Forest but now live with guilt and regret. And does the best she can to deal with the fact that she's now an ordinary warrior. And it's not done out of a sense of pride or resentment. It's done with a heavy sense of loss. Fortunately, she's not alone in this new stage of her life. Lionblaze and Jayfeather have lost their powers as well. Probably my favorite scene is the very end, where Rock and Midnight wish them the best of luck now that they've fulfilled the prophecy. Dovewing in my opinion deserves her rest.
Ivypool, Birchfall, and Blossomfall – They may not be the only ones who once trained with the Dark Forest, but they do have the most to prove in my opinion. We all know Ivypool was spying on the Dark Forest for Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Dovewing. But the rest of ThunderClan didn't know that. It felt realistic to see Ivypool struggle with a heavy sense of regret, given that she also initially chose to train with the Dark Forest because of how much she envied her sister. I liked that she brought up to the other leaders when they brought their own convicted warriors. I like that she chose to defend herself even as she felt weighed down with guilt. I really felt for Birchfall when he not only lost his mother and brother but also had to face rejection from his father. And I thought Blossomfall was so kind to get catmint for the cats she thought might be developing greencough.
Various Other Characters – Bramblestar definitely has a lot to live up to, which I hope to see more of in his super edition. But it's clear that ThunderClan could not have had a more perfect successor to Firestar. Nor could they have a better new deputy in Squirrelflight. She takes on this new position with precision and skill, even as she knows that she too has much to live up to, given Firestar was her father. I also felt for the other Clans when it became clear they suffered the aftermath of the Great Battle as well. I don't know how much longer Blackstar might live, for example. I also liked how Purdy comforted his fellow Clanmates as they mourned their lost warriors, even though he was dealing with his own losses. Shame on Molepaw and Cherrypaw for trying to lure the former Dark Forest warriors into a trap! And of course, I hope Lionblaze and Jayfeather can adjust as well as Dovewing as, now that their powers are gone too.
Overall: After the intensity of "The Last Hope," this whole story felt like some much-needed falling action (so to speak), both for the Three cats of the prophecy and ThunderClan. The way this story was written and told made it feel like letting out a big sigh after a huge and heavy storm – only to sigh again when you realize how much work needs to be done to repair and move on. I loved that theme of this story and I was very pleased to read it.

So.
Short little novella so it’s going to be a short review. Plus, what I wrote down in my journal kinda gives a bit of spoilers for other books. Even if you would have probably read the others before reading this, I’m not comfortable putting what I put in my journal on here. I think I was writing it when I was so close to getting burnt out and just not actively thinking about how I would spin it on here. Anyways, back to the short review.
There was so much emotion in this very short novella, I’m surprised that I didn’t tear up. The cover is generic but, I am glad to see the cat that their focusing on, which is not always the case for the main books.
The writing was captivating and drug me right into an emotional roller-coaster with a pace that flows like water to move the story along. This one has to be one of my favorites.
Now the novellas can be read wherever during the series, some of them are in a weird place, like Hollyleafs Story, so you kind of have to make your own decisions on when to read them. Usually it’s a big no-no to read books out of order but in this case, even though these books are numbered, I would recommend finding where they belong in the story and reading them as you read the main books, you get all the information that way.
My Review: The title of this book is Dovewing's Silence, but it actually does not focus much on Dovewing coping with the loss of her powers and made it sound like this could be the end of her life. In fact, the title is kind of misleading. It was a decent short novel (probably one of the shortest ones ever) and we see how Dovewing adjusts to life without her powers, but I feel like it could've focused on her powers more. Instead, it focused more on the cats that trained in the Dark Forest. Again, that's nice, but the title clearly statesDovewing's Silence. I feel like us fans didn't get enough closure. Otherwise, a very good story. I'm rating this book regarding content in general, but I took off one star because of my personal feelings on the book.
Content Warnings: A character muffled a curse once and semi-detailed mentions of death/injuries.
"Spiritual" Content: StarClan (the cats' version of heaven), Dark Forest (cats' version of hell), and a few other stuff I'm certain I forgot to mention.
This review was written in my own words and opinion.
