Hitch up the trailer, strap on the surfboards and settle into the saddle for a low carbon surf and cycle trip through Europe. This is the ultimate surfer's pilgrimage to find the soul of surfing - and rediscover the simple joy of riding waves.

Chasing the sun south from Cornwall, bestselling author and environmental campaigner Martin Dorey takes to two wheels to follow in the footsteps of the pioneers who first discovered Europe's best waves. On an epic journey of 3400 kilometres Martin and his partner Lizzy take the slow roads through Europe's western fringes in a way that few have done by eBike, their camping and cooking gear, wetsuits, surf boards and bellyboards trailing behind.

As an 'Average Joe' surfer Martin is returning to form after a disastrous knee injury, hoping to rekindle his love for surfing and find the sense of freedom he felt on his first Great Surfing Adventure in 1985. Despite storms, wind, rain, broken spokes and challenging mountain climbs, Martin sets off to find the people, oral history and land and seascapes that have made surf trips through France, Spain and Portugal a unique rite of passage since the 1960s. Cycling, camping and living almost entirely outside for 3 months allows him to get closer to the waves and be guided by those who went before.

You won't find The Way of the Waves on any map, of course, yet here it a love letter to surfing and two-wheeled eco travel. It's a testament to slowing down, finding freedom, learning that hills don't go on forever and that there is nothing like the happiness of riding a bike or the simple joy of riding waves.
