My hopes of being loved and accepted have been snuffed out. Bible thumpers have made it their mission to destroy my ailment as a heretic. The sins that I’ve committed have led me to a new home, surrounded by monsters that hide behind their faith.
My demons have followed me here.
I will use this to prey on the wicked and send them to the burning pits of their hell.
My name is Aria Monroe, and this is my story.
This book contains graphic content. Reader discretion is advised. It deals with themes that will and should upset most readers.
Luana is a horror fanatic to the core. As a kid, she wasn't allowed to watch anything related to horror due to the strict religious beliefs instilled by her parents. Regardless, Luana’s passion for horror grew while watching scary movies in secret. Within the genre, she has found healing for her past traumas, and she writes stories to hopefully help others dealing with all the difficulties life throws at them.
When she’s not reading or writing, Luana plays video games. She's an animal lover and will always see her fur babies as her own children.
This was one heck of a debut! I really enjoy reading Splatterpunk involving religious themes. It's so cathartic to read books such as this one as I can relate growing up in a heavily religious environment.
Blood of the Sinner follows Aria throughout her journey of a young woman who's only known life inside the church. Aria faced some pretty horrific events in this story and at times it was tough to read. She didn't deserve any of these awful things to happen to her but she does get her revenge in the end and for that, I am happy for.
If you enjoy Splatterpunk and aren't new to the genre, I highly recommend checking this one out. This is definitely not for less experienced readers within the genre as it is very trigger heavy.
Aria and her parents are always at church. Her parents are respected and really good friends with the Lancasters, who are the priest, his wife, and their son Eddie. Aria is different from the people at church because she goes to a public school and is interested in things that are frowned upon in the church. One day, her parents leave her under the care of the Lancasters when something terrible happens to her by the hands of Eddie, the pastors son.
Aria is then sent to a catholic boarding school because of that awful night. Nobody believed her, not even her parents. She also suffers by the hands of "godly" people at boarding school. Her only friends are Saint and Sin, 2 rats who come to visit her. That is until she meets Piper. Piper has also had it rough and they plan to leave together and start a new life. That is until Arias past comes back to haunt her.
The beginning of this book was infuriating! All the adults and Eddie were some of the worst humans! Poor Aria just needed a break. You feel for her throughout the book. The villain in this story is just how I like them, mean and ruthless. Rose didn't hold back on his viciousness, and I appreciate that! The deaths were great and some sad. The ending was satisfactory and I need more from this world! I love religious horror, something about riding that fine line between good and evil gets me and this delivered that and more. Excellent debut done by a great new indie author! I highly suggest!
Aria Monroe has been abused in many ways by many people. Some of the worst is explored in this short story. You cannot help but to want to reach into the story and save her. The torture and sexual assault at the hands of one of the nastiest characters possible, Eddie, was enough to get a visceral reaction out of me.
After trash-bag Eddie gets Aria sent off to a place surprisingly even worse than where she was growing up, nothing gets better, until she meets Piper. As the girls are nearing 18 they hope to put the screwed up uber religious boarding school hell behind them. They start to come up with a plan to break free from any chance of being kept locked away in this terrible place. When Eddie resurfaces, Aria ends up facing him alone, besides her furry roommate friends, the rats that she shares a room with - Saint and Sin. Aria’s rage has finally unleashed and there’s not much that can stop her now…
This book has some brutally sad parts, the abuse and murder that Eddie spreads in the world is horrible. Honestly my only criticism of the book is I would have enjoyed multiple chapters of finding new and creative ways to make him suffer. Also, the nasty gore parts were done very well - some gross-outs for sure.. I don’t want to give anything away but I’ll just say two words about a certain scene that was so icky: vomit kiss. 🫠
Looking forward to what Luana has in store for us next! I see a bright future in this genre for her.
Perfect example of what happens when you push people so far over the edge that they lose it and then you end up dead! Our poor main character is tormented so much she turns into a someone straight from terrifier. Story also comes complete with lots of vomit, and one especially memorable vomit scene. What a great debut! Can’t wait for book two.
This is a rough and brutal splatter/revenge plot (check TWs this is not for those new to the genre) but damn was it good. “drown him in his own blood … then bathe in it”
This book was extremely dark but immensely beautiful and powerful. I was completely immersed in Aria’s heartbreaking story from beginning to end.
I cannot WAIT to read anything that Deathly Rose writes. Please read your TW’s before reading this but I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend if you enjoy graphic horror novels. 10/10 ⭐️🖤
this is my first splatterpunk (i think?) novella and my first from deathly too & wow what a wild ride.. at first i was like nope this isn't that dark.. then i got up to the bathtub scene. god fucking damn i was floored, the bodily fluids was almost enough to send me but i pushed through like a brave girlie. i can do blood & guts no problem but vomit? that is ALMOST where i draw the line & from a girlie with emetophobia i didnt know if i could manage it but its honestly not that bad.. we'll call it exposure therapy i guess lols
this is a dark one,in terms of themes probably the darkest ive ever read and does involve child death & brutality in many forms but honestly it also lowkey made me want pet rats? call me crazy but as of rn the darker the better for me,im living depravity and darkness in all of its forms so this? well i actually do feel like it is a 4⭐️ for me,i only say 4 because of the child death, that did rock me a little bit but it is do-able and as a beginner to this genre i feel like this is a good place to start as i have heard their is MANY darker themes out there so this may be a good point to start if you can handle the triggers!
should we rate? my first ever splatterpunk novella hehe
characters? 4.5⭐️ for the femme rage in this, our main fmc aria and piper,my favourite girls! aria is crazy and i LIVE for her! i hated eddie, stupid fucking awful pastor person YUCK but i guess you have to have a villian right? and he defintely was that too me🙃
gore? 🩸🩸🩸🩸 lots of blood & guts, detailed descriptions and crazy crazy visuals as you're reading (for me anyways) bodily fluids, mainly vomit which is pretty yucky but it's the genre you know? gorey, yes! yucky? yes. but perfect for the story? yes.
storyline? 4.5⭐️ such a great storyline even in a novella (coming from the novella whore) something about religious books always feel good for me to read, some of my favourites honestly! it feels cathartic and actually brings lots of feelings up for me and the rage in this one, defintely felt it in my bonessss!!
overall?? 4⭐️ a great intro to splatterpunk and a darkness im not used too, deathly wrote this story with their f-ed up part of the brain in action hehe! but they did it so well! and enjoyed the darkness and craziness more than i thought i would so like im looking forward to explore this genre more aswell as deathly's books too!!🫀
Omg, I buddy read this with my lovely friend and I can’t believe we’ve left it until now to read this!
Honestly we were hooked from the very get go! The way these characters are developed makes you feel so much empathy, anger & disgust towards them
Our FMC poor Aria, the amount of abuse she had to endure, she was let down by her parents, then the father of her abuser..a pastor no less 😔 When speaking up, she was blamed & sentenced to 6 years in a Christian boarding school to “rid her sins”
The boarding school is a gateway for other abusing Priests & such to do whatever they please with their victims until they turn 18.
She slowly starts losing touch with reality, hearing voices wanting her to seek vengeance…my god does she get it.
The back story on the MMC makes you HATE him, he’s vile & pure evil. You are wishing him death through out!
This was brilliantly done, honestly devoured it in a couple of hours & are reading the second tomorrow! 5⭐
I loved this! Was it depraved? Oh yes. This is the sort of splatterpunk I like best. It’s gory and disturbing, but also carries a story with a strong character.
There’s a lot of grape and gore in this + violence towards children. Some of it was VERY hard to read.
This is Splatterpunk so you know it will be triggering. But also know that there are acts of SA depicted in case that is a trigger for you. This was a great (albeit sometimes dark!) and quick read.. and one that I will think about for a long time! 🐀
5⭐️ what a strong debut!! Not only is this book gory and entertaining, it’s also quite emotional. You feel for Aria and can’t help but root for her. I loved how visceral this book was and I can’t wait to read more about Aria and her journey!
Aria gets abused by the Pastor’s son that uses the excuse of redemption for this violent act but little did she know that he would get away with it and she’d be the one to blame. Ending up being sent to a religious boarding school where events like these were a ongoing thing and shushed by the staff.
But one day enough is enough and Aria will take the matters into her own hand and decides to put a stop to it.
Yes it touches sensitive subjects. Yes it depicts vile acts. Yes it’s gruesome.
But most importantly.. Yes to the empowerment of a girl that grows up with no support and when even God turns their back on her, she finds strength to stand up for herself.
I devoured this book beginning to end.
If you’re into splatterpunk/extreme horror you better check this one out!
BLOOD OF THE SINNER is the debut from author Deathly Rose. I enjoyed this splatterpunk novella in one sitting. It was brutal. Unhinged. Gory. Grotesque. The FMC’s abuser, Eddie, did have one line my dark soul highlighted while reading, but he’s still a piece of shit. Vomit kiss? Good grief. This story was heartbreaking with Aria’s past but like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the FMC Aria shows us her story isn’t over. Looking forward to more from this author.
An excellent debut showing from an up and coming horror author! Rose put herself on the page in spades and captured the essence of a conflicted soul screaming for release from many years of religious indoctrination. Rose’s writing is visceral, and Blood of the Sinner checks all the sordid and depraved boxes.
4.5 stars!!! I'm truly blown away... What a fantastic debut novel from Luana! The writing was truly a work of art that had me hooked from the beginning to the end! I can't wait to read more about Aria! I highly recommend this book! There are a few scenes that may be distressing to readers, so please check content warnings!
This book was gritty, it was gruesome and it was filled with trauma. Our FMC goes through the worst of the worse and you find yourself wanting to fight for her and help her eact revenge. The feminine rage and the FAFO vibes that we get with this read is so well done and I cannot wait to read book 2.
Eddie is so vile and one of the best villains I've read in a book.
What happens to Aria is painfully graphic and disturbing, and my heart broke for her. But then she rises and takes matters into her own hands, and you can't help but cheer her on!
This was an excellent debut by Deathly Rose, and I'm excited to see what else she creates
Wow this one was a wild ride! I loved the main character so much I would easily read another book about her. Eddies chapter made me hate him that much more. Only took a star off because I would have liked to see his death drawn out for as long as he made Aria’s life hell!!!
I think the last 3 or 4 chapters are the strongest in the story. And I'm not sure if the abusers POV section was really needed I wanted more of the MC. I will read the second one.
I was lucky enough to be sent an ARC of Blood of the Sinner by author Deathly Rose. This is undoubtedly and unreservedly an extreme horror, so read responsibly and check your trigger warnings. Let's begin.
Once I started reading Blood of the Sinner it completely captured my attention and I couldn't put it down, finishing it in one sitting. As a debut novella, this is impressive and I'm excited to see what Deathly Rose does next, and for the continuation of what has been established here.
This book primarily focuses on Aria Monroe, a young girl enduring a religious upbringing that exposes her to some of the worst suffering anyone could endure. Author Deathly Rose expertly delves into Aria's character and paints a sympathetic and believable portrayal of a young girl trying to come to grips and understand what is happening, and then builds from this a great character arc.
However, I think where Rose excels is in her crafting of the antagonists in this book, particularly Eddie Lancaster. Both utterly despicable and disappointingly convincing, he is truly detestable. The novella is compelling throughout, but the pages particularly come to life in scenes featuring both Aria and Eddie.
My criticisms for Blood of the Sinner are minor. There's a chapter where the focus switches to Eddie's point of view, which could be an effective tool if it were utilised to shine a different light on his character, but honestly he's completely irredeemable and I feel this perspective switch only reinforces that. I therefore would've preferred to have remained following Aria's perspective, or to have seen more events from Eddie's perspective. I found the shift for just the one chapter a little jarring, but maybe that's just me. I also wish the character of Piper had been introduced a little earlier, as I truly loved her dynamic with Aria, which Rose portrays very efficiently but I would've loved to have seen this built out a little more. But like I said, these criticisms are minor.
As far as the extreme horror goes, Deathly Rose pulls no punches, which I'm thankful for as I think if you're going to tackle a topic like this there's not much use being delicate about it. The writing is raw in the absolute best way. One of my criticisms I often find myself levelling at extreme horror is that sometimes it feels like the acts of depravity get in the way of any actual characterisation, but Rose expertly sidesteps this - and in novella too! - proving that you can have both.
Blood of the Sinner is out today, December 15th, 2024, and I would certainly recommend it for fans of extreme horror.
This debut of Deathly Rose was a delight to read. Though, I do really recommend to check your triggers on this one. It deals with some pretty heavy subjects.
It is a splatterpunk that includes religious themes and I personally really liked that. The beginning of this book made me feel all sort of things, but mostly anger. And because it made me feel that way, the book was very cathartic to me.
Death of the Sinner is not a splatterpunk book you should read when you’re new to the scene or when one of your triggers is SA. However, it still is one hell of a debut!
There is something so gratifying about reading religious Splatterpunk. The simple fact that most of it doesn't have to be made up, so the monsters are ingrained already in our minds at vile and deplorable. The fact it takes place in Birmingham, Alabama makes it even more prescient a story for me to read. Being the belt buckle of the Bible Belt, one grows up privy to all sorts of horror stories on a daily basis that nothing if effective anymore in terms of shock and horror. It's just a sad reality.
That reality kick-starts this nasty tale of religious horror, a place that is supposed to be welcoming and loving to all, but is, in reality, warped and demented. A fine piece of literature, A DEBUT NO LESS, that grabs the reader and pulls you along into a tale of demented debauchery all in the name of love.
The whole time I was hoping for a chance and revenge, and while the wait happens, my heart was completely ripped out of my chest. These are heavy topics Rose addresses, but she does it with such deftness and consideration to the reader. The gore is there, not for a p*rnographic fantasy, but to engage the reader in the brutal reality of the situation. I loved every second of this story as my heart was racing and I was crying for the MC, an abused young girl named Aria. What trials and tribulations she goes through in this book bathe her in blood and transform her into one of my new favorite heroines.
A very new release, I highly implore anyone who longs for retribution against those religious institutions to come out and give this one a shot. I absolutely adored this story, and I cannot wait for more from this new incredible voice!
This was my first taste of an extreme, religious themed horror by Deathly Rose and holy hell, it ruined me (in the best, blood-soaked way possible).
From the first sentence, I was strapped in, jaw on the floor, brain melting, screaming “WHAT THE ACTUAL—” while also frantically turning the pages like my life depended on it.
First, there was Talia. My favourite unhinged femme fatale by Daniel J Volpe, but now there's Aria Monroe, which is the unholy anti-heroine I never knew I needed.
Her rage? Delicious.
Her vengeance? Divine.
Her demons? Terrifying.
And the monsters around her? Highly deserving of what they had coming to them.
This novella was raw, ruthless, and absolutely addictive, and I managed to smash it out in less than an hour! I blinked, and it was over—and I instantly grabbed book two like a junkie needing a fix.
The writing is unforgiving, bold, and damn near cathartic. You said “reader discretion is advised” and I said “bring it on.” No regrets. Just blood, screams, and a whole lot of admiration.
So thank you for making me feel uncomfortable, but also entertained and slightly concerned for my mental health (in the best way possible)
4.5 stars Absolutely yes! This is very dark and twisted and exactly why I loved it, plus the feminine rage/revenge as well, so good!
This is my second read by Deathly Rose and I feel confident to say that I will likely love everything this author writes.
Definitely check your trigger warnings for this read, if there’s a trigger, it’s likely in this book!
The story follows a young girl who is god-fearing and who’s parents are very devoted to religion and God.. but from a young age she experiences things that no little girl should ever experience and to top it all off, she’s blamed for everything over the word of a lying ass, nasty ass boy and sent to a “reformatory” boarding school which is really just a cover to send children who don’t keep their head down to evil things and conform to “religious standards” which include but is not limited to, allowing men to rape a young women or little girls in the name of cleansing to be pure again in the eyes of God.
This was great, I definitely despised some characters and I was heart broken for Piper the FMCs friend.
It was brutal, bloody, perfectly unhinged, went from 0-100 quick and didn’t let up and I loved that!
The premise sounded amazing, but this book isn't for me. Unfortunately, I didn't love the prose and the story revolves too much around SA, which is explicitly and meticulously described on page, for me to enjoy it. I'm sure the author had her reasons to write this story the way she did, and I can tell it's not romanticised. This topic is triggering for me, though. Since this book is too insistent on the subject, I can't keep reading. I couldn't wait to read about the gore, but there's no sign of gore at 47% yet, so I have to DNF and I won't give any rating.
This book is terrible. Bloody and violent for the sake of shock value, it's basically a very unrealistic telling of a girl who went through a terrible childhood just to be sent away to a Reformatory school. Her abuser gets a job there as a minister, and she vows to get revenge, but not if he gets his first. It's not well written, it's ugly and it's brash, and it's disgusting in ways that don't make you cheer for the protagonist, because in many ways she is just as awful as her abuser. I wouldn't make my worst enemy read this garbage.
