Way less happened in this book than I expected. I love the design of the Sorrow Lantern and I’m interested to see what happens now that he has the Book of Oa and the Eye of Krona, but this hardly kicked off a fractal spectrum of any kind yet. The art here is FANTASTIC! I loved the style. Different than Xermanico’s from the main run for sure, but I think it really lends itself to GL. On to GL #19 then I’m caught up…GLC #1 coming up soon!

I won't skew grading by giving a star. I never liked GL – the character or the mythology – and I still don't, so starring it wouldn't be fair.

Really solid entry in the series and the only thing that made me sad was the poor book worm librarian dying but the rest was great.

What a phenomenal start to the new green lantern corps, this really feels like the true dc all in jumping on point, they even reference that Carol is working with the Justice league and Hal is out of a job lol.

But our story doesn’t start directly with the reformed core, as it takes us to a location called the library of forever, where a large book “worm”/librarian is too busy to chat. Little guy looks like a distant cousin to Mr mind. But his day is quickly ruined once sorrow appears. I didn’t read the storyline where he came to be previously, but this is a very looming figure. Beautiful full page art of use pure gloom. But he has come searching for something, a fractured glass that will help him read a book…the book of Oa!

We now cut to parts unknown where Hal is enjoying a nice lunch break before getting back to work with the rest of the corp. it’s so nice to see a happy go lucky test pilot Hal just parading around the universe. Before eventually returning to Oa to help the rest of the corps carry down and install the green lantern central power battery back on Oa! Once there Ellie and Keli helped to initiate the power transfer back into the city and give life to Oa. But one thing I was unaware of is that Oa is no longer guarded by the green, which is why they have there new guardian sentry of the power battery…jadestone, the Amazo robot that took green lantern abilities during absolute power. Due to his power constraints he has to stay close to the battery anyway, so it’s a win win!

Meanwhile the rest of the lanterns are gathering to listen to Jessica Cruz speak. Also I first look at Kyle this issue, and he is looking good, back to that classic look. They have now designated Jessica to head up the party and with the guardians now acting as advisors for the lanterns behind her, her speech acts as the start of the new corps. One thing I find curious is that these new guardians all wear logos to the other lantern corps. That as Jessica puts it, now run rampant through the universe. Their batteries were destroyed, leaving the emotional spectrum in disarray. The corps new mission is to find the creatures of every type beginning to manifest these powers and show them there is a way to control their emotion through sheer will! Jessica’s speech is quite great, but quickly interrupted by a giant explosion.

As the other lanterns fly over we are shocked to find sorrow actively fighting Guy Gardner. And Guy is currently falling to the effects of sorrow, going so far as to believing he should die when sorrow dropped him to the ground. Luckily John was there to catch him, but this is where I get my first expo dump on sorrow. Turns out Nathan Broome was once engaged to Carol, but something infected him, turning him into the sorrow, and sorrow seems to blame Hal and Carol for what he became. Hal tried to calm him down and show him that he can help him control the sorrow, but Nate claims that his problem will soon be fixed when “he” has it. As he shows off that he has stolen the book of Oa, he quickly disappears in a shroud of fog. As they clear the fog away and see that he escaped, we are left with a pretty pissed off Guy that has a lot of explaining to do.

We get our first interaction to Guy’s apocalypse of a room from the shocked expressions of two guardians. There are papers and strings connecting everything everywhere. It’s like the question ripped through here lol. But I have to hand it to Guy, I had no clue he could be this passionate about something. Guy admits that he has a hobby, a while back he remembered the original guardians rewriting the book of Oa, so this idea got stuck in his head…who’s to say they didn’t do it before. So Guy became obsessed with it, he went to the library of forgeror and dug around their archives, but he could only get so far without the real thing. Until the guardians went away and the UP stepped in. He took his chance and snuck in Thaaro’s chambers, telling the real book and swapping it with a fake. Still he couldn’t find anything in the pages until he found the eye of krona. A piece of glass made entirely of source material, when you look at the book of Oa through it you can see it wasn’t written just one way…but six alternative ways in different colors of the spectrum. The new guardians aren’t aware of this info but Guy thinks he knows what sorrow “the emo lantern” is after…he wants to build his own power battery.

The guardians freak out, if sorrow is to make his own power battery it would be cataclysmic. Sorrow is a refraction of light, if it had a battery it would do more than expand sorrow to the universe it would set of a chain reaction that would fracture the spectrum and splinter the universe!! Just look at how the librarian from earlier ended up, full of gray spikes poking out of him…muttering about sorrow. And with that the lanterns have their mission. Guy also isn’t a complete idiot, he kept copies of all the pages. With that we know what sorrow needs and now it’s a race to stop him. Welcome back to the green lantern corps!!
