Against all odds, Gideon saved his crew from the Draconians, and he even rescued the colonists—but they aren't his colonists; they're from a different Trailblazer. Now they've found refuge on a planet called Sanctuary, but their Draconian ally, Rolam, has informed them that their safe haven belongs to a powerful race of sentient machines, and it might not be as safe as it seems.
Gideon's mission is to escape and find their people. But with the leader of the colony forbidding anyone to leave, and Rolam pushing his own agenda, the path ahead looks treacherous.
While they are still deciding what to do, a chance encounter with a mysterious rebel faction presents a third option, and Gideon must decide who to trust. The stakes are high, and dark forces are conspiring from the shadows. Even the slightest misstep will mean death, or worse—enslavement to the Dracs.
🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀 Review: Rebel Galaxy #2: Factions by J.N. Chaney & Jasper T. Scott
Like any good sequel, Factions doesn’t just raise the stakes—it blows them out of orbit. Chaney and Scott deliver a tightly paced, high-octane continuation that rockets Gideon and crew into even more dangerous territory, and I couldn’t flip pages fast enough.
What We’re Orbiting Around
Sanctuary may sound idyllic, but for Gideon it’s anything but. Newly rescued colonists aren’t his own, the local leadership is more prison warden than protector, and Rolam—the Draconian with just enough shady charm to keep you guessing—is back with troubling news about the planet’s actual owners: sentient machines with murky motives.
The mission? Escape, survive, and keep hope alive. But when a rebel faction enters stage left with secrets of their own, it’s decision time. Trust is a luxury Gideon can’t afford, and betrayal lurks in every shadow. The result? A fast-burning plot threaded with espionage, moral friction, and cosmic dread.
Why It Blasts Off
•Conflict That Cuts Deep: Gideon’s choices feel personal and philosophical. He’s not just dodging death—he’s wrestling with survival’s cost. • Sharp Worldbuilding: From Sanctuary’s uneasy politics to the eerie presence of sentient machines, every location feels like it’s hiding something. • Blockbuster Action: Dogfights, tense negotiations, and one pulse-pounding reveal after another make this perfect for fans of The Expanse or Mass Effect.
Verdict This is interstellar storytelling with grit and guts. Factions doesn’t just expand the universe—it adds new layers of tension and purpose. Gideon’s journey remains the beating heart of this saga, and trust me, you’ll want to ride shotgun till the end.
Different factions cause problems for the rest....
Gideon wants to go to Crucible and try and free his colonists, but their leader won't let him. Bailey is on Crucible and expected to produce babies, but she doesn't want to as the last two were taken away. Sanctuary is a world that the Dracs avoid as it is supposed to be The Cold One's planet. Vanguard are a collection of freedom fighters that are trying to liberate everyone from the Dracs, though their exact feelings over their free people are unclear..... The interplay between these factions and Anderson who must deliver the colonists to his master, lead to an interesting tale that severely tests all concerned. Intrigue, suspense, romance, lost and found relatives, reunions, sacrifices, elections, new allies and much more contribute to this fun read.
Earth was invaded by Drac’s who seek to enslave other species. And our Earthlings from the Trailblazer, Gideon, Cyrus, Aria, Venus and IRIS are looking for a way to get away from the Dracs and save their people with the help of a rebel Drac of the lower classes. He wants to help all the slaves better known as thralls but his entire team was captured, so it’s he and the humans. Their only help, the Vanguard. A rebel group that is led by the very machines that the Dracs built to enslave but turned on them. They do have what some might think as a paradise but what secrets are they hiding. Who can we trust?
This has been an enjoyable read, but let’s address the herd of Elephants in the room. What are the odds of stumbling across all the INDIVIDUALS you have been looking for, spread across a galaxy on a planet of billions of slaves!
The story might have taken a more interesting path, if the different groups never met, but were able to communicate but never meet?
Yes I will read the next book… I’m somewhat invested.
There is always a heap going on in a Jasper Scott book and when J.N. Chaney enters the storytelling then it is like adding a strong energy drink. Great action, intrigue, character interactions and a story that keeps us on a roller coaster ride of emotions. So much left to be worked through and just who can be trusted? What are the hidden agendas and full background to what is happening now. On the edge of your seat stuff.
The lead characters are growing in this great story. Impossible situations with exciting escapes. Parallel storylines with great resolutions that lead into the next episode.
Kind of a slow start, and drags in places, however the story is very good and it definitely has a few twists I didn't see coming. Definitely worth a read if you've already read the first book
