About the author

Laura has had a lifelong love of writing, which she explored in a successful marketing career before penning her first novel. She loves all things humorous, laughs too loudly and finds her own jokes amusing. She has a passion for traveling and exploring the world but has a phobia of suspect hotel rooms with questionable hygiene. And, oh yeah, she isn't clairvoyant and doesn't own any crystal balls.

Laura has written two novels, 'Time Shifters Book One: Beyond Time' (YA dystopian) and Visions (paranormal); a children's book, 'Lets's Go, Fabio! (Florence)'; and a free collection of short stories, entitled 'Unmasked Secrets'. The second book in her Time Shifters series is due for release in early 2015.

Beyond Time by Laura N Anile intrigued me because I do love a good time travel story and add a bit of the apocalyptic/dystopian to it and it intrigues me more.

Why I didn’t connect to the characters, other than Kira, I don’t know.

There’s danger, a virus, nuclear bombs, lies and conspiracy, trouble figuring out who’s good and who’s bad…

The Time Shifter series needs to be read in order and Beyond Time makes the need to read more a necessity. Could that be part of my problem? Was it too ‘young’ for me.

If it sounds interesting to you, I do recommend trying it for yourself. Just because it didn’t work for me, doesn’t mean it won’t work for you.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Beyond Time by Laura N Anile.

I won't bore you with the plot details that others have already reported.
Towards the end of the story, I was a bit frustrated at the amount of time wasted by Ryder worrying about how his actions or non-actions were going to impact the real Ziron when he returned to his body. In my estimation, this only portrayed him as a wimp. I did enjoy when the writer allowed Ryder as Ziron to take out the gang that ambushed him and Tom. I like characters that are the main ones in the story and obviously portrayed as the heroes, to be the best at many if not all things they do, so they get recognition.
I have to say that when this Paradise was first linked to the Lottery, I immediately thought it might be something similar to Sanctuary in Logan's Run, a Sci-fi TV show from the 70's. Logan's Run depicts Logan and Jessica on the run in each episode in various locations on future Earth as they search for the mythical place known as "Sanctuary".
While I would love to be able to read the 2 sequels, $10 is too much to pay for both. I would be willing to pay less for a bundle though.
I received this kindle book for free on Amazon.

It is a nice science-fiction story where Ryder was minding his own business when he got jumped by the school bullies. But that is not the worst of it, suddenly he feels like he is yanked out of his body, is he dying? When he wakes up he is not in Kansas anymore. He find himself in another boy's body in another time line. How did he end up in 2127?

When they assign him a bodyguard to keep him safe, he suddenly has the feeling that he doesn't know who to trust. Now that he knows the state of the world, he finds himself unexpectedly in Rebel camp. The world is divided in the have and the have not's when resources are limited.

What is even more of a contrast is the lottery , promising Paradise. This reminds me a lot of the movie "The Island" as not all is what it seems. Very nice story, loved it a lot.

Beyond time book 1 by Anile. I found the characters slightly predictable. However, the conflictual Ryder/Ziron kept me on my toes, waiting for him to stuff up - Anile spells it out if you miss it. The description of the rebel's hideout is quite good though I couldn't picture Kira's place. Why was her father, Tanaka, kept silent for much of the story? It would've added some expose as to what he was up to, and hence Ryder returning to his own time. No ending till the sequel.

Laura K Anile’s Beyond Time is the first book in an action-filled YA series. In this volume, 17 year old Ryder Worthington is on his way to school when he encounters a pair of bullies. One moment he’s in the midst of a fight, but excruciating pain suddenly takes him out, and the next thing he knows he wakes up 112 years in the future – in someone else’s body.

Trapped in the body of Ziron – the young man who has apparently senselessly jeapardised his whole life to change places with the boy from the past – Ryder must keep the secret of his altered identity from everyone but the two scientists behind the experimental time-shifting tecyhnology. This is almost impossible in a future where the world has been all but destroyed by a catalclysmic war, where the chasm between the haves and have-nots is huge and rebellion against the controlling government is boiling over.

Ryder ends up tangled in the rebellion, falling in love with someone who thinks he’s Ziron and developing a strained friendship (when they’re not enemies) with Jet – who is also a rival for Kira’s attentions.

Beyond Time is snappily paced and builds a bleak but believable world. More could be made of it, I think, but the parts we see are distinctive. Ryder’s attempts to blend in and make sense of his new surroundings are understandably full of slips, particularly as he gets drawn deeper and deeper in to a very dangerous situation. The consequences of discovery, he’s told, could be deadly, but since every turn holds a deadly secret and so many lives are at stake, there are plenty of heart-stopping moments for Ryder and the reader alike.

The teenage posturing between Ryder and Jet over Kira’s affections borders on the wearing, but just as it’s getting way too annoying, one or both of them shows a little maturity and real care and respect for Kira, which seems a pretty realistic way of portraying teenage rivals in love slowly learning how to grow up.

Kira is a bit too perfect and, for someone who shows she can handle herself well, a bit passive at times, but the core of a good character is there. The fact that she’s seen through Ryder’s first-person, besotted eyes naturally paints her more as a subject of adoration, and I hope she gets to shine a bit more in upcoming books.

The young boy, Tom, who befriends Ryder/Ziron (after a fractious beginning) is easily the most sympathetic character, and this younger boy is often the voice of reason when Jet and Ryder get too argy-bargy in their rivalry.

All of these relationships and clashes are happening with a backdrop of rebellion against an unfair system, many mysteries around Ryder’s real identity and the motivations of the time-shifted Ziron, Jet’s difficult past, Kira’s concern for her mysteriously vanished father, Dr Tanaka, and the biggest mystery of all – what happens to the people who have won the lottery to get passage out of this failing world and into Paradise.

The story is very readable, though a bit clunky in parts. A tighter edit could help the story along (and a few typos and errors sneak in on occasion) but otherwise the text flows easily, and Anile keeps up a brisk pace. I’m looking forward to the second novel of the series, to see how Ryder’s teetering secrets and the big reveal in the last chapter will affect both the teenagers who are starting to grow up and the harsh world in which they live.

I don't usually read YA fiction but 'Time Shifters - Beyond Time' by Laura Anile was recommended to me by a friend before Christmas and I've just finished it. The plot was intriguing and fast paced from the first page. Apparently it is the first in a series and I can't wait for Book Two. I need to know what happens! I definitely recommend this book.
