This serves as a prequel of sorts or could be read alongside the Cafe at the Edge of the Woods almost as if each book is one side of the same story from different points of view. Sweet and adorable and I just want all the books in this world!

A cute and wholesome follow-up/prequel to The Cafe at the Edge of the Woods. It's very enjoyable and the art is, as usual, phenomenal.

I think at this point I'll read whatever Mikey comes out with, regardless of whether it's mature science-fiction or children's picture books. They are really quite special.

No shit the author worked in animation, and I'm not just saying that because the main character looks like Finn the Human. The more I think about it, the art does look like that SoCal style mixed with water colors. Everyone clearly has their shapes and bend and twist and colored in with these loose greens, blues, and browns. It's supposed to be a little nasty but it's almost too pretty for that.

Rene and Glumfoot return in this prequel to Please’s The Café at the Edge of the Woods (2024). In this story, readers learn how clever, green Glumfoot came to be Rene’s right-hand monster, waiting tables at her rustic cafe in the woods. Like the first book, the primary tension of the tale is how to feed an ogre, except this time Glumfoot must find a way to keep the ogre from devouring Rene. Readers will delight in the spritely dialogue between Glumfoot and the towering ogre, with illustrated panels providing close-ups of each character’s growing horror or delight. Ample use of gross-out expressions like “fungus toes” and “booger broth” will have readers laughing out loud. Savvy readers will recognize the sepia-toned palette and cover art’s symmetry from the earlier book. This would make a delightful and dramatic read aloud for elementary school-aged groups. Like every morning, small creature of the woods, Glumfoot, watches their dad make a booger broth for breakfast. But on one particular day, Glumfoot smells something divine. They follow the smell outside the cave and see a cafe on top of a hill. However, Glumfoot isn’t the only creature that smells the cafe; an ogre is determined to eat the human who runs it. So, it’s up to Glumfoot to persuade the ogre in different ways not to eat the human, all in the backdrop of wildflowers and pies.
Pastries and savory dishes collide with fungus toes and pickled bats in this sweet-smelling picture book that tells the difference between a cafe and the disgusting foods that the creatures of the woods eat. Soft autumn colors paint a picture on every page as brush strokes of browns and greens spread across the pages. Readers will find Glumfoot’s persuasions to deter the ogre from the cafe hilarious. Part morning dew and soiled cloths, this picture book will delight.

The Cave Downwind of the Cafe is kind of a prequel to The Cafe at the Edge of the Woods. It almost gives us the exact same story, but told from a different perspective. Is there anything wrong with that? No, there isn't. Especially when the illustrations to this world are so good. Just like the previous book, this is a very cute, rhyming story which will give young ones plenty to delight in. The illustrations are vibrant, and detailed, perfectly bringing to life the characters and their tale.
I would definitely like to see another book in this series, hoping that Glumfoot and Rene's world is developed a little more next time around.

What a brilliantly odd little gem!

I listened to the audiobook and loved every minute of it. The narration brings out the story’s quirky rhythm and perfectly balances the creepy with the cosy. Still, I definitely need to get the physical book to enjoy the illustrations — I can already imagine how wonderfully weird they must be!

It’s a story that kids will laugh at and adults will secretly adore. Equal parts gross, funny, and heartwarming — like a bowl of bogey soup made with love.

The prequel to the Cafe at the Edge of the woods. Tells more about the character Glumfoot, how he accidentally happened to become the waiter, and how he convinced the ogre not to eat the human cafe owner- Rene.

I enjoyed this book. Wonderful artwork and luxurious smooth paper pages.

Love the name Glumfoot, very creative and silly.

Aku baca karena tertarik sama ilustrasinya. Man, why does children's picture book always goes hard? This is why I like artists. The rhyme is silly & creative. Sayangnya aku baca buku ini pertama, harusnya buku satunya duluan.

Very interesting art and rhyming scheme. And very well enjoyed by the kiddos with a good mixture of simple and more advanced words to learn.

A prequel to how Rene hired her waiter Glumfoot and how he is helping the ogres in the woods. Written in a rhyming scheme with delightful illustrations!
