Lighting the Lamp

Rate this book
A tired NHL goalie. A best friend who feels like home. One hometown rink, one impossible secret, and one love he can’t let go.

I’ve always known exactly who I was: the calm and steady one. The goalie with the best save percentage in the league. The Hendrix brother who never let anyone down. Until my body stopped playing by the rules and suddenly, I’m the one who needs saving.

I came home to heal, not to fall for Alise Moore.

My childhood best friend. The girl who’s always been my safe place. The one person I’ve never had to pretend with.

But now we’re older. Everything’s messier. And I can’t stop looking at her like she’s the only thing keeping me upright.

She’s soft where the world’s been sharp. Quiet, but never weak. And when she looks at me like I’m still whole, even when I don’t feel like it, I start to wonder if maybe I could be.

Hockey was always the plan.
But Alise Moore?
She’s the reason I’ll fight to stay standing.

I’m really torn on this one.
On one hand I loved the premise, loved the disability representation and how the struggles both the main characters went through was portrayed.
I loved the family vibe, the ribbing and the banter.

But on the other, I really struggled with the first 70% of the book. There’s angst, but this was the same back and forth on repeat for more than half the book.
I don’t mind slow burn, but this just felt overly drawn out with a lot of repetition and unnecessary indecision.
Repetition was also something I noticed throughout with some phrases being used so many times it totally drew me out of the story. There was similar things with time jumps happening mid chapter that left me needing to re-read to figure out what happened.
I came into it understanding it was an interconnected standalone which I guess it was, but there was so much I didn’t have a full grasp on, presumably because I’ve not read the previous books.

So definitely not a bad read, there were a few things that meant it just wasn’t for me.

This book was 500 pages of pure angst and I was an emotional wreck throughout. I literally started crying 30 pages in and I don’t think I stopped until after the book ended. This book completely like destroyed my sanity. But at its core it’s two broken souls who are too stubborn to ask for help. It’s actually ironic how they’re like to each other “you have to let me in, I can help you” but “oh but I can’t you see me broken because you’ll leave me”. Honestly after knowing each other since childhood and being in love with each other unknowingly since you were thirteen you’d think they would know better. The panic attack and anxiety representation and scenes were all extremely realistic which is something I love to see as someone with an anxiety disorder. And I loved the chronic illness rep, and it really made this book even more emotional. Also I can’t stop laughing, like the amount of times Darius (his nephew) has walked in on them is crazy. It cracks me up every time. But one of my favourite scenes is when she reads the grovelling letter. We get her reaction to each and every line as it gets more and more emotional. I love this format of a reaction because usually we just get an overall description but this one felt so powerful and overwhelmingly emotional. Which I loved. I just wish this book wasn’t so long it did feel a little dragged on. I give this book a 4/5

This is the third book in this impressive series, and this is Alise and Beau’s story.
These two are childhood best friends, who have always been there for each other. Now Beau is a tired NHL goalie, who puts on a front telling everyone hi is ok, and he heads home to heal, while Alise has her own issues with fear and anxiety. The only one Beau can be himself with is Alise, and she will protect he no matter what.
This is a beautifully written slow burn, easy to read, emotional roller coaster, with found family, friendships, tension, challenges, drama, secrets, friends / lovers, determination, healing, soulmates, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and heartfelt, small-town romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Lighting the Lamp is ah-mazing!

LIGHTING THE LAMP is the third book in Author AJ Alexander's Portland Timberwolves ice hockey series and I can't rave enough about how much I'm loving the legendary Hockey playing Hendrix brothers. She has absolutely outdone herself with this emotion filled and witty story featuring Beau Hendrix and his long-time best friend Alise Moore. While each book can be read as a stand-a-lone, our beloved characters are recurring and I loved seeing Cooper and Ramona from A SCORING CHANCE along with Cole and Michelle from CHEAP SHOT. Ms Alexander upped the ante in bringing forward a carryover issue from Cole's book and it ramped up the Timberwolf team dynamics throughout LIGHTING THE LAMP adding another layer to the depth of the book. It is small deets like this that can strengthen a book and take it from being really good to becoming a guaranteed-great-read.

The Hendrix family are beautifully flawed yet loving, and Momma is firm, fair and lovingly supportive of her boys. Unfortunately the boys deeply hide the hurt of a family fractured and living under the shadow of losing their father far too early, and in LIGHTING THE LAMP we found out Momma has been keeping some things pretty dam close to her chest. Beau's book was devastating 💔

Beau was left reeling with a very much unwanted family inheritance which undermined his own personal identity, leaving him to wonder how he could navigate a relationship now that he and Alise had decided to admit to the love they'd long held for each other. Not content to write a standard issue friends-to-lovers, sports hockey romance, Ms Alexander threw together some broken-alpha-hero traits and a neurospicy heroine brain just to make things hella interesting!!!

It worked. LIGHTING THE LAMP is nothing short of amazing.

Ms Alexender created allllllllll the feels from crying to laughing and back again and I have to add her attention to detail is freaking awesome. The love she felt for her characters was outstandingly evident as she poured so much emotion into them and with it being a dual POV I was there and could almost feel for myself Beau’s devastation and frustration.

Being neurodivergent myself means I can identify so closely with some of Alise's personal demons. We are all affected differently and it is a comfort to know you're not the only one with a hugely alternate view on life and that our reactions to various circumstances deviate from the so-called ‘norm' yet are actually normal for our type of brains. Not many authors create neurospicy characters and I hugely appreciate and love these people who reside in the imagination of Ms Alexander.

Ms AJ, thank you so much for bringing them to life.

Beau and Alise deserve every one of the 5-hard-won-romance-Stars 🖤🩵🏒✦

Healing Friends-to-Lovers Story That Proves Childhood Love is the Only Safe Place

The Goalie Who Fell

If you love your sports romance with deep, gut-wrenching vulnerability and a love that acts as a lifeline, then Lighting the Lamp is the book that hits the net. This installment is an exquisitely painful and perfectly satisfying childhood best friends, wounded hero story that reminds us why the entire Portland Timberwolves family is pure fire. 🔥 We know these heroes, and watching Beau fall is the most intense ride yet.

The hero, Beau—the calm, steady goalie who never let anyone down—always knew who he was. Until his body betrayed him. When he comes home, the trauma of his injury brings the intense vulnerability we've come to expect from the Hendrix brothers. You will feel every single agonizing moment as he struggles to feel whole again.

He came home to heal, not to fall for Elise Moore. But Elise, his childhood best friend and the one person he’s never had to pretend with, becomes his quiet, non-negotiable anchor. The transition from "safe place" to passionate lover is messy, intense, and wonderfully complex. You'll absolutely love the familiar back and forth trash talking between them—it’s hilarious and perfectly shows their lifelong bond and easy chemistry. And, of course, the heart and wisdom provided by mama is exactly the grounding force these men need.

This is the kind of powerful, adult romance we crave. The stakes are immense, but watching Beau realize that his fight to stand tall isn't for hockey anymore—it's for Elise—is the kind of emotional payoff that makes this series unbeatable. Prepare for high angst, stunning chemistry, and an HEA that is fiercely earned within the love of this unforgettable hockey family.

Reasons I enjoyed this book:

Have you ever picked up a series that just sucked you right in , in ways you never would have expected ? That had you falling in love with each and every character / couple from the very first book and where you found yourself completely immersed in the world the author has created ? That had the ability to make you feel so many different emotions you never saw coming? Everything from smiling and laughing out loud , to crying like a baby to actually being speechless at times and screaming outta pure frustration during others . That had you cheering so freaking hard from start to finish, Well this series !!! A.J Alexander’s Portland Timberwolves Series truly has become just that series for me . And we’re only on book 3 . Alise and Beau oh my gosh guys I absolutely loved these two so so much. The way these two and everything they went through just grabbed onto my heart so tightly , how it just resonated with me and pulled on all my heartstrings. What I loved most about Beau and Alise was the history between them . The fact that they have been each others safe place and best friend since childhood. The way they’ve always been by each other’s side . Truly such a beautiful thing. Things have changed though , their older now , the feelings they’ve always had for one another but never acted on start the become more evident especially when Beau gets a health scare and a devastating diagnosis. The emotional toll this takes on him !!! Because of this he realizes it’s time to finally go after the woman he loves most . Is best friend Alise . What a beautiful love story !!!

Incredibly emotional

LIGHTING THE LAMP
, Portland Timberwolves #3, was an incredibly emotional read. Did I laugh? Yes! Did I sob? Yes! Did I get frustrated and angry? Oh, so many times! AJ Alexander took this story to the next level with her exquisitely built tension, strong relatable characters, and perfect pacing.

There has always been a special bond between Beau Hendrix and Alise Moore, they've shared everything together, wanting more than just friendship but unsure how to take that next step. That friendship/bond is about to be tested in a way neither expected. Honesty has always been a mainstay of their friendship ... until now. Beau is fighting a battle and withdraws from everyone, including Alise, putting himself in danger. She has always been there for him and him for her, but will Beau's withdrawal push her away forever?

While LIGHTING THE LAMP is Beau and Alise's story, it is also one of family, understanding, acceptance, and love. I enjoyed the teasing between the brothers and how they are always there for each other. I loved this book; it had me continually wanting to give everyone huge hugs. To say I devoured it, yes even through the sobbing, would be an understatement. This book needs an endless supply of tissues, plenty of chocolate, and some wine ... AJ Alexander does not hold back. Kyle's book is next up, and I can't wait.

This was my first book by AJ Alexander, and I'm 100% going back to read the first 2 books in this series.

I absolutely loved Alise and Beau's story. This book is full of mental, as well as physical, health rep. As a paramedic with mental health issues, I love that these weren't things that were glossed over as just another blip in the character's lives. It's part of the story. They were the story. It might have taken some pushing from family from time to time, but Alise and Beau both had to work through their own mental hangups, and physically for Beau, before they could really be what they needed to be for each other.

If you're looking for a spice/smut filled hockey romance, this book isn't for you. There is some spice, yes, but this isn't one of those books where it carries the story. The spice is where it needs to be and nowhere extra. There is an actual, worked out plot for this one that isn't just the MC's jumping each other's bones every 2 seconds (not that there's anything wrong with that from time to time).

All in all, I definitely recommend this book. If reading about anxiety/panic attacks or serious medical episodes triggers you, please read this book with caution. 💜

Beau and Alise’s story took me on an emotional rollercoaster.

Beau sees himself as broken, he spends his time telling everyone he is okay when in reality he is far from it. Alise sees right through Beau. She can see he is struggling, but he also keeps pushing her away.

From the start of this series I have also loved Alise and I loved getting to see more of her and get to learn more about her. She’s so real and relatable in one way or another. Her fears and her anxieties come through and you feel them right along with her. I felt for Beau, too. Though at times I was yelling at him to open his eyes when it comes to Alise. The man was frustrating me, but he more than makes up for it in the end.

There is a lot to this book beyond the hockey aspect. There are real life issues that are handled with care and so much heart and emotion. I can’t wait to see what is in store for the next Hendrix brother.

If you’re looking for a friends to lovers, small town, hockey romance check this one out.

Lighting the Lamp is book three of the Portland Timberwolves Series.

I knew Alise and Beau were going to have a super cute story and this one did not disappoint. Beau wants to be seen as strong and independent and doesn't like to show failure. This was shown very well throughout the book as we see him struggle with what he is going through, but at the same time putting on a bright face in front of everyone. We see Alise struggle with some of her feelings. She doesn't want to feel like the runner up with Beau. She wan5ts to be his first choice and not a convenient one. These two struggle with their own inner thoughts and emotions which cause some tension between them. But when the tension breaks, we get some very enjoyable moments between them.

This was a great addition to the series. I loved these two together and how she was willing to stand up for him in his time of need. They were both there for each other when they were going through something and this caused them to develop a great bond together.

This book absolutely wrecked me in the best way possible! I felt such a surge of emotions reading this book. Beau and Alise’s story was beautiful and heart wrenching. You could tell that this book was wrote with love and passion.

Beau’s life is upended when everything he’s ever loved is pulled out from under his feet. His emotional moments were gut wrenching as he loses himself and struggles to find out who he is. He finds strength and love in Alise who supports him even in the darkest moments. His journey to forgiving himself and finding love again was raw, emotional, and beautiful.

Elise has loved Beau for the longest time but has refused to stay anything at risk of losing their friendships. These two had such a strong bond before it turned into more that made their relationship so strong. Her vulnerable and raw moments with Beau were one of my favorites as readers see a different version of Elise. She becomes such an anchor for Beau allowing him to love and find himself again. They build a strong and loving relationship with each other that never wavers.

Beau is reaching a crossroads in his life and is struggling with what that means so he heads home while he faces life changing decisions. He is determined to try and deal with the situation on his own but Alise, his best friend, isn’t about to let him do that as despite his actions she knows that there are things he isn’t telling her.

Alise is dealing with some challenges of her own and feeling like Beau doesn’t believe he can share his secrets only causes more turmoil. What they share is much stronger than friendship, but will they be able to open up and trust each other with their innermost thoughts and fears before it is too late?

Beau and Alise are exactly who the other needs in their life as they understand, support and appreciate each other for who they are, imperfections and all. Beau and Alise take us on a tumultuous ride that will have you feeling for both these characters and hoping that they can emerge on the other side stronger emotionally and when it comes to their relationship.

I feel like Beau and Alise’s feelings/bond had been teased in the previous books of the series so it was nice to see a romantic relationship form between them! There was nothing easy about getting to their happily ever after though. Both characters had both current struggles and past demons to deal with all while trying to shoulder everything they could for the people in their inner circle. I felt so many feelings through this book happy, sad, angry, giddy…. It truly was a rollercoaster. I did not agree with a lot of the FMCs actions but they made so much sense for her character… AJ did a wonderful job writing these characters in a way that made you understand each and every choice they made. And one of my favorite parts? The main characters friends didn’t let them get away with anything and called them out when they were making mistakes. It was such a nice change from what I usually read in books. Overall I really enjoyed this story!

How is it I missed finding out about the earlier books in this series? This book confidently stands alone, but I could tell I had missed out on some great storytelling in the earlier books. Just means more great reads for me! This story has a lot going on, and Ms. Alexander makes sure the reader is there for all of it. Sometimes there are almost too many words, but I suspect that's just me reacting to those tiny ebook pages that, to me, don't do the prose justice. The story mostly concerns Beau Hendrix, steady as a rock hockey goalie and Alise Moore, his friend since childhood. These two are part of a wonderful found family with plenty of opinions, nicknames, and chirping to go around, which I love. If these folks were real, they would be so much fun to hang around with, right? Against this backdrop is an engaging story about how Alise and Beau come out of their "childhood friend/extended family" shells, stop hiding their chemistry, and develop an adult relationship. To be completely fair, the plot also includes plenty of drama, a family secret or two, and some serious personal growth among the major characters. So basically, plenty of real life mayhem to go with banter. I am looking forward to catching up on the opening of the series in time for the final installment.
I was given an ARC of this book and volunteered to write a review.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
🌶️🌶️🌶️. 5

“Don’t call me Daddy unless you’re ready to be my good girl.” Her breath catches like she wasn’t ready for my response, but she likes it. I know based on the way her whole body stills, it’s not retreat—it’s anticipation. “I—shut up,” she says, fumbling with the hem of her shirt. “You can’t just say stuff like that.” “You started it.” “You weren’t supposed to react like that.” “You weren’t supposed to look like you liked it.”

This Book was absolutely amazing. It was beautifuly thought out and written especially with the topics this book has in it. Had me sobbing on the middle of the book and laughing at the banter and shouting at Beau.. Men!! The chemistry between them was off the charts. I was hooked from the very first page until the final one. I can't wait for the next brothers book. Thankyou for for allowing me to be an arc reader.

Beau and Alise finally get their book, but will they live HEA? I have been rooting for these two to get it together from the beginning of the series. Not only are they friends, but they have wanted to be more for a long time, but he keeps pushing her away. Each Hendrix brother carries trauma from an early in life loss, but Beau feels broken. He tells everyone he is fine, but Alise sees right through him. Alise is neurodivergent and real. She doesn’t always act the way others think she should, but that harms never been an issue for Beau. Mama Hendrix has been keeping some things very close to the chest.

This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster but it is worth it. I love this series and this book, with the attention to detail and accuracy of past events is fantastic. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I received an ARC and this is my honest, voluntary review.

Okay but this one had me kicking my feet and grinning like a fool. AJ Alexander knows how to do swoony hockey romance, and Lighting the Lamp absolutely delivered. I’ve been saying this for awhile, AJ Alexander is it. She’s literally IT.

This book is all heart, chemistry, and that cozy yet spicy sports romance goodness. The banter? Top tier. The emotional beats? Chef’s kiss. And the found-family vibes with the Timberwolves crew just keep getting better with every book in this series. I loved watching these characters knock down their walls, face their feelings, and yes score big both on and off the ice.

If you love hockey heroes, strong connections, and a romance that feels warm, fun, and a little bit feral in the best way… this one’s for you. Highly recommend curling up with it and clearing your schedule because once you start, you won’t want to put it down. 🖤📖

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ARC E-read

Lighting the Lamp by A.J. Alexander is the third book in the Portland Timberwolves Series.

I loved the book, it had me crying. I was connecting really connecting with Alise, and her desire to be Beau’s first choice, and not because she’s always been there for him. The pacing and building tension was good, and the alternating POVs really drew me into that build up. AJ has a writing style I love and this installment was no different.

Alise had me feeling like I was looking in a mirror in regards to pieces of her personality and the way she approaches taking care of others that felt a lot like me. I connected to so many different aspects of this book, and I’m so happy this was the one that brought me out of my reading slump!!!

slow burn between friends

This is book 3 in the Portland TImberwolves Hockey Series. This is a stand alone childhood friends turned lovers, a small town slow burn romance. The story follows Beau and his childhood friend Alise. He is the goalie for the team going through some medical things, she is the younger friend who has always loved him. They navigate his medical issue while both figuring out how they feel with one another and where they stand. Both our FMC and MMC are a little neurodivergent so they are helping one another out. I gave it a 4 stars because at times I felt like it dragged and on the burn at times was too slow for me. However I did love how Beau alway put himself in a position to be there for Alise when she needed him the most.

Facing your fears is never easy — especially when you have a family name to live up to. This story beautifully captures that struggle: the pressure of expectations, the weight of pride, and the vulnerability that comes with letting someone in.

His biggest challenge wasn’t just facing the world — it was learning to accept help, to trust, and to realize that love doesn’t make you weaker. It almost cost him Alise, until his family stepped in and reminded him of what truly matters.

In the end, it’s a touching story about growth, forgiveness, and the power of love that stands strong no matter what life throws their way.

AJ blew this book out of the water with Beau and Alise’s story. Beau being the backbone of the team as the goalie— he has known to take care of everyone but himself! Alise does the same thing … takes care of everyone but herself!

This book I’ve waited for after reading the first 2 and now can’t wait for the next brother’s story! All of them tell a unique story and are all must reads!

There are scenes in the book that just make you feel like you are there in the book with them. They were well researched and written especially when talking about a hard topic that is touched on in the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic and emotional journey. Beau and Alise were best friends who were obviously meant to be more.
The characters are complex, realistic and engaging with a supportive friend group and found family.
Full of humour, heartache, doubt, angst, healing and growth; check the warnings as there’s some difficult content.
This is a full length story with deep emotion, sweetness, swoons and steam. It’s a great addition to the Timberland Wolves series and I look forward to the next instalment

Alise and Beau, their story is going to take you on an emotional journey. These two both have issues they have to struggle through and as they both get inside their own heads with their thoughts, it causes some issues between them.

Alise is such a strong character and the way she was their first Beau, becoming someone who protected him. Loved it! He needed that with what he was going through, though I didn’t like how he kept pushing her away. Beau, this man had so much going on inside his own head.

The connection between these two was great. IT went back years. The chemistry was amazing!

We finally have Alise and Beau’s book and it didn’t disappoint. Lighting the Lamp is the 3rd book in the Timberwolves series. This book is angsty and emotional. Beau and Alise have always been in love with each other but they’ve denied their feelings for different reasons. When Beau gets a devastating diagnosis, he struggles emotionally to figure out a life without something he loves while simultaneously trying to win the love of his life. I love this series because of these brothers and their relationships not just to their partners but with each other. Their interactions are emotional but also provide some much needed levity for balance. Lighting the Lamp will wreck you but in the best way.

Beau was always supposed to be a hockey player, well until he decided he was done but his body didn’t agree.

Deciding he needed to take some time and let his body heal, Beau goes home to do just that.

Alise doesn’t see Beau as broken like he sees himself, if only she could show him through her eyes.

Spending time together, Beau is finally realizing that maybe he isn’t as broken as he feels. Being around each other, they both find healing and comfort.

Hendrix men are such a stubborn lot. They are so darn thick-headed but their women love them anyways . As such is the case with Beau and Alise. Alise has her own issues to contend with. And they're both running scared... I am glad they got it together for real...

Solid writing and filled with angst along with a host of truly supportive characters. Which I happen to adore the dynamic between the families makes this book a winner.

You’ve met his brothers, but now it’s Beau’s time to shine, and shine he does.

Alise and Beau’s story is emotional, but so beautiful and enjoyable. You will connect with both of the on a deep level, as they are such relatable and real characters. These two had struggles on their own, and together as they navigated their feelings for one another, but one thing they always did was show up for each other.

Absolutely loved reading this book.
Beau and Alise's story and its so emotional at times but also full of fun banter and family love.
Both want each other but neither feel that they are enough and when Beau's body is fighting against him he retreats into himself.
Can they get past this together or will he push her away too many times.
A must read and I can't wait for the next book.
