Hazard Play

Rate this book
Tess Hazard is ready for a change—but not the kind that involves a rough-edged, smooth-talking bounty hunter barging into her life. She’s seen his type before, and she's learned the hard way to steer clear. She’s been burned before and has no intention of getting swept up again.

S.D. Bailey is on the hunt for a bail-jumping embezzler. He’s a man with one last job and no time for distractions. But when Tess reluctantly agrees to use her nursing skills to help track down his asthmatic target, they both get more than they bargained for.

Their mission takes them undercover in the glitzy corners of Lake Tahoe, where close quarters and high stakes turn sparks into a wildfire of attraction neither of them saw coming. Tess fights to keep her distance, but Bailey's determination—and the unmistakable pull between them—chips away at her defenses. As danger looms, both will have to decide how much they’re willing to risk.

Fall for the thrill, the heart-pounding adventure, and the electric chemistry in HAZARD PLAY where the game might be risky, but the reward is worth every gamble. Take the plunge into a romance that’s as daring as it is unforgettable!

Janis has always loved writing contemporary love stories. These are tales about people in their 30s finding connection, navigating career and life changes, and falling head over heels in unexpected ways. Those stories still hold a special place in my heart. But lately, she’s been drawn more and more to characters with a little more mileage. People who’ve lived, loved, lost, and kept going. That’s why she’s shifting her focus to seasoned romance.

Seasoned romance is about characters who are in their 40s, 50s, or beyond. There’s something incredibly compelling about two people who aren’t looking to be rescued, but instead find someone who sees and appreciates them exactly as they are.

The stakes are often quieter but no less meaningful. Instead of love triangles or who’s texting whom, we’re dealing with grown-up issues like aging parents, blended families, second careers, or healing from past relationships. And because these characters have been around the block a time or two, their decisions often carry more weight, and their intimacy feels more grounded. They’re not afraid to ask for what they want, or admit when they’re scared to want it.

She’s still bringing the same slow burns, deep emotion, smart heroines, and stubborn, lovable men. But now, the heat and heart come wrapped in a little more life experience.
These are romances for readers who know that falling in love doesn’t have an age limit and that sometimes the best chapters are the ones we never saw coming.

Janie McCurry is a new author to me so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I loved it!!
Bailey is a complex character who doesn’t let people in. No one has touched him in a way that would make heart open without thought. He’s a don’t-mess-with-me, alpha male. He has a strong moral compass and works to bring criminals back to face their punishment.
Tessa (or as she is lovingly referred to as Contessa - which I love) is a caring and open character. She smiles often and cares for her many patients with empathy and understanding. She has an inner beauty and spunk that shines brightly in the darkness.
Watching these two characters verbally volley back and forth was hilarious. Their chemistry instant and off the charts.
The addition of Lucius added an extra depth that was endearing. An older gentleman being hunted and judged for something he hadn’t done. I loved that Tessa judged him on her gut feelings and firmly believed in his innocence.
Rand was an unexpected character but I loved her none-the-less. She added an extra sizzle into the mix.
Watching Bailey fight his feelings made me want to hug him one moment and slap him the next. Why is it that men fight tooth and nail to not have to face the fact that their feelings are involved. Men are such weird creatures in my estimation!!
Although I do love the moment when the guy realised his heart is all-in and
Moves heaven and earth to rescue the girl. Makes my heart skip a beat.
As you can probably tell I loved this story. Highly, highly recommend.

Brilliant. Clever dialog with twists and turns until the end. Great combination of romance, suspense, and humor. This is the first book I've read from this author and I'll definitely be reading more.
