BOOK THREE OF THE ILLBORN SAGA

ONLY ONE CAN CLAIM THE POWER.

After the four Illborn have remembered their recurring dream in full, each of them must decide what they are going to do with their newfound knowledge.

On the island of Abass, Arion and Leanna must both choose between a return to Angall, and a dangerous journey into the war-torn Holy Land. In Andar, as Allana continues her ascent to power, she begins a deadly game of cat and mouse with Aiduel’s Guards and the Archlaw. And in Bergen, Corin must decide whether he needs to leave his homeland to pursue and to kill the others of his kind.

As their powers continue to grow, will fate draw the four together? And if so, are the dire prophecies of the Illborn destined to come true?

Gatebound is the thrilling third and penultimate instalment of The Illborn Saga, the acclaimed epic fantasy series by Daniel T. Jackson.

It calls to them.
Beckoning through dreams.
Promising untold power.
That only one shall possess.

Whoo hoo! Gatebound continues the edge of your seat, action packed rollercoaster of one of the best fantasy series around.

I remember first reading Illborn and being completely taken aback of how great it was. You had this incredible storyline with fantastic characters. Wars, intrigue and mystery. I couldn’t put it down.

Fast forward to finishing book three and NOTHING has changed. There’s been no lull. It’s been just as great as it started with shocking twists and turns each step of the way.

Gatebound brilliantly delves into each characters inner turmoil. Each of these individuals are constantly dealing with mixed emotions. Pain is one of them. For the most part they desire the greater good.

Well….perhaps the horrors of life’s hardships put a couple on a more selfish path. 😉

They really can be quite ruthless!

You can feel the electricity particularly when the Illborn cross one another’s paths. It’s absolutely mesmerizing.

A lot of the book takes place in the holy lands and you can’t help but admire the adversary there.

They just keep coming. Wow!

As with the previous books I finished desperate to see how everything will play out. All the major players now move to grasp the glorious prize.

Absolutely addicted to this saga.

Much thanks to the author for providing me this ARC.

This book made my list of top Indie SFF books I read in 2025!
For the full list, please see the link below:

https://beforewegoblog.com/p-ls-top-i...

Full disclosure: an Advanced Reading Copy (ARC) of this book was provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review, which I have provided below.

Please be advised re: spoilers for "Illborn", and “Aiduel’s Sin”, as I will be ‘somewhat’ touching upon events from the first two installments of this series in this review.

This review is long overdue, as I finished reading this incredible third installment in Daniel T. Jackson’s “Illborn” Saga back in January 2025, as one of my priority reads for the year. Yet it has taken me some time to compose the review.

But now, as the year begins to dwindle, and I must ponder which books will make my annual list of top Self-Published Science-Fiction/Fantasy books, as I know it’s more a matter of WHERE “Gatebound” places on said list, rather than WHETHER it makes the list, I had to get moving!

Some series are easier to review without spoilers: this is not one of those series. Nonetheless, perhaps a focus the characters' development in this story, which is of course the beating heart of this saga, warrants focus here, in order to capture just how fabulous “Gatebound” is, and hopefully without too much spoiling.

For fans of the series, you are aware that our four protagonists are irresistibly drawn towards Aiduel’s Gate, a nexus for power, that is as portentous as it is tantalizing. In “Gatebound”, as the name implies, this inescapable drive toward their destiny takes on a whole new meaning, and the quartet of principals are closer physically than ever before to said gate, and to each other. Plotlines converge, characters who have only heard of another through reputation will come into contact, others will be reunited, and as always, the consequences will shock and awe the reader.

And all the while, as the gate looms nearer, the true qualities of the four Illborn begin to emerge even more sharply and intransigently. It becomes more clear which character’s better angels – or worse demons – will guide their actions when they are inevitably confronted with the choice of seizing ultimate power versus altruism/self-sacrifice, that will more than likely lead to their demise. Or will they even have a choice, if one of the Illborn proves to be so powerful, and heinous, that the others will be slaughtered like sheep? And would such a horrific act be only tragic, or would it be no less than some of the Illborn deserve, for the terrible things some of them have done?

In terms of Allana, she remains as equally reprehensible as she is compelling and believable. In a dark, patriarchal, medieval-type world, where women (other than highborn) must struggle to survive from merely being reduced to little more than chattel, Allana sees the only path to defiance of the limitations and dangers of being a woman is taking advantage of men, the way many men typically take advantage of women. Allana’s deviousness, manipulation, sexual assaults, and outright atrocities escalate, even as her rationalizations for her actions finally begin to ring hollow in her own mind. Yet, she’s too far gone to turn back, and it’s easier to wallow in the wrongs that have been done to her (and make no mistake, some horrific things have been done to her), and hold to the simple tenet of self-preservation, and her ambitions for greatness, which she believes justifies all the crimes she commits, rather than face the truth. But will a major life change possibly provide her with a different alternative, or only make her entrench in her wrongdoings? Allana's words remain: LUST, POWER, DOMINATION.

Arion, I found to be the most changed character from book one to this current installment. He’s a man seeking absolution, and vengeance, coping with extreme guilt, and trying to find himself after the loss of so many dear to him, his high social status, and the betrayal he feels one of the other Illborn has enacted against him. But peace is rarely found in warring. Still, Arion elects to join a religious crusade to reclaim the territory that includes Aiduel’s Gate. Someone like Arion needs a purpose, and when one sees oneself as a weapon, well: that purpose means killing. Arion has only found comfort, for the most part, on the battlefield, revelling in being hailed a hero, though he realizes that the butchery required is soul-tainting, in the end. Yet one often lapses into the familiar to find solace. Though Arion is often startlingly self-aware and candid about his flaws, to the point where the reader may wonder, is he capable of a truly, noble, heroic, and redemptive arc? Or will the darkness in his soul, and his lust for violence and acclaim, seal his doom? Arion words continue to be: “STRENGTH, VICTORY, GLORY”.

The long-suffering Leanna’s high sense of morality leads her to break ties with one Illborn, and form a seemingly tight bond with another, as she begins to see just how complicated being an upright person with power can be, in terms of the choices one must make, to protect and preserve the ones you care about. I think some readers will find this character’s pureness as somewhat self-righteous and irritating ( I don’t personally), but I also believe many readers will find Leanna to be the most genuinely honourable and ethical of all the Illborn. But as it’s said in Star Wars, honour can be a fool’s prize, and will Leanna be able to live with what she must do to be a good person, when she is also seemingly also one of the world’s most powerful people? In the end, even for one as virtuous as Leanna, will absolute power corrupt absolutely? Leanna will be challenged to maintain her words of: “DEVOTION, SACRIFICE, SALVATION”.

Finally, Corin, essentially considered a ‘barbarian’ to some of the other cultures in the world of “Illborn”, has risen from outcast to nigh demi-god among his tribes. He has led them successfully through many challenges, and their faith in him has been rewarded. But will his own people follow him into even greater trials, without truly knowing that’s at play, and what’s at stake, when even their leader is in the dark to some extent about what perils they might have to face? Corin has needed to be a ruthless war-leader to rise to power, but we know he can make alliances and withhold bloodshed, if it’s in the best interests of his people, and his cause. But will he be able to trust any of the other Illborn, now that he has become aware of the great potential power that could be unleashed, that could devastate his followers, should someone other than him claim it? Are all the Illborn as dangerous and corrupt as Corin believes them to be? Or could he make a fatal mistake by NOT trusting them? Corin words are: “FEAR, CONTROL, ORDER”.

Rarely can be found the series where the quality of each book continues to deliver or exceed on the promise of the previous installment. Yet, after reading three books in “Illborn”, I can say it is the case with this series. Once more, in “Gatebound”, author Jackson pairs breakneck, unremitting action and battle scenes, dark themes, intrigue, and romance, with unforgettable characterization, blended into a heady concoction that will have the reader flipping the pages breathlessly into the wee hours of the morning.

I love my slower paced, more ponderous fantasy books, but there’s nothing wrong with a pure adrenalin jolt to the senses, and for certain, the “Illborn” saga is infused with thrills from start to finish, without stinting on the incredible character moments I crave in this type of story. That is the true brilliance of Jackson’s craft: the ability to spin a hefty tome of a book, and make it read as fast and yet as engaging throughout as a novella-sized read.

My understanding is that this saga will conclude with the fourth book, and as incredibly thrilled and eager I am to read that final novel, I’m not ready for this story to end. This series has become one of my favourites, and I have no doubt it will be cemented as an all-time favourite once it is finished.

Without question, 5 stars for the amazing “Gatebound”!

How exactly am I going to explain this? What should I say? First of all another big chunky amazing fantasy, with multiple pov. This books has such interesting look into the complicated intertwined magic and religious system, even more throughout this book, and what implications that could happen. And with this book there was so much development within this book which definitely occurred which kept me gripped to the book, to a point I didn’t want to put the book down at all. The fact that this book was multiple PoV, I had really enjoyed it especially as it allowed information for to be told to me as a reader, from the different characters and meaning that you would just find out bits of information you will need for each characters which I absolutely loved. The plot has developed from where it had left off in the previous book. And oh my there was so much that the story was written was so amazing. I definitely loved the authors writing style and this is a reason why I will always want to pick up.a book from him. The characters within this book had a lot to face within in this book and especially with the challenges that occurred. And with everything in which they had to face all of the characters definitely developed even further. I am already looking forward to the next book in the saga.

One gate. Four illborns. Only one can claim the ultimate power.
As tension rises, one friendship begins to fracture. One turns ruthless, hunting down the others without hesitation. Another, consumed by fear, will do anything, betray, deceive, even kill, just to survive.

Corbin left with no choice but to leave Bergen to face new treats and challenges on his new journey.
Arion and Leanne are on the way to the holy land, where war is breaking loose in every corner with new treats and enemies.
Allana is still power hungry and dominant while being on the Aiduel's guard radar.

It's soon finally here! Going into this, i already knew it was gonna be a 5 star. Was i too hyped up and was mistaken? Heck, no!
Daniel's way of telling his story is just as amazing as always. The way he writes his character to engage and how he writes everyone off them to give the readers different feelings from how the characters are acting is incredible.

In this book, the world will open a little bit more than the previous books as you will also travel to the Holy Land and the war that is going on there.
I didn't think we would get this far into the story in this book as we still have one more, but I do love it as it gives more to see and learn.
I can't ever get enough of this series, and I have been hooked since page 1 from illborn trought every single after that.

What's also great is that if you have forgotten something from Illborn and Aiduel's sin, it will be a summary at the start of Gatebound.

Can't recommend this enough because it's amazing, and i don't think i can ever get enough of this world and the characters. Recommend this series of all my heart, and if you haven't read it yet, I definitely think you should

One of the easiest 5 stars I've ever given. This series just strikes a cord with me and I can't put it down. I loved the action moving to the Holy Lands in this book bringing our Illborn when closer to whatever awaits them there. Great fight scenes, great dialogue. Great escapes that you don't see coming. Very anxious to see how this story concludes. This series really deserved some love on booktok! I don't understand where everyone is on this one. Thanks again Daniel for the ARC. This really consumed my past two weeks and I loved it. Congrats on another fine installment!

A spoiler-free review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First of all, Daniel, thank you for the opportunity to have this eARC. I am absolutely privileged that you have trusted me with something so precious.

Second of all, Daniel, well done. Let’s be honest, am I surprised I enjoyed the third book in the Illborn Saga? Of course not!

GATEBOUND was absolutely gripping, following our four cherished characters from the rest of the saga. Once again, Allana was my standout. Maybe not the most popular opinion, I know, but I love her. She makes me laugh and I think she’s an absolute icon. Plus, her entire arc had me GRIPPED.

We are still in the process of making our way to the Gate, to what I expect will be the pinnacle of the story, and I am enjoying our journey to get there. I am very interested to see if my predictions come true.

Once again, Daniel’s prose and editing were pure perfection. I found no faults, and if I speak his dialogue out loud, it comes out very naturally. Important for me, who sees and mentally acts everything out like it is a movie.

Thanks again Daniel, I am looking forward to the continuation of the saga and wish you all the success in the official release of Gatebound.

Wow! Gatebound is another fantastic instalment of The Illborn Saga and already I can't wait to read the final book!

I found the re-introduction of the four main characters, as well as the characters of Illborn and Aiduel's Sin (book 1 and 2), and the ending of Aiduel's Sin, very helpful going in.

As per book one and two, the writing is superb! I was captivated throughout this fantastic ongoing saga and enjoyed the main characters' growth on their continuing quest.

Gatebound is thrilling, action-packed and tense. I was torn between racing through it and taking my time with this masterpiece. But I took my time with it, until the last quarter of the book, which I flew through, neglecting all my adult responsibilities.

If you've read and enjoyed the first two books in this series, you're going to love this book. If you haven't, what have you been doing with your life?

As always, a big thank you to Daniel for an ARC to read and review. Expected publication date for Gatebound is 28/2/25.

And done! Tensions are high and the Illborn are making their path towards Aidual Gate. Secrets of the past are revealed and blood will be spilled in the name of claiming the one power. The faith of the church will be tested and the journey forward will be a perilous one. Best book in the series for me. 5 stars!

I really like this series! More adult language than I prefer, but well thought out and characters that really grab me.

I enjoyed book 1 and 2 allot but I think the series is just getting better. I think the first 2 books could be predictable and maybe there wasn't much drama because the characters were over-powered and never in much danger.

But the fall of two of them has given this book what it needs to really drive the story.

I'll always love Corin and Agbeth!

The plot for Allana is crazy. She has had quite the arc.

It's gonna be a hard wait for book 4!

P.S. I want a felrin.

I’ll admit, I’m a bit conflicted about this one. I liked Illborn quite a lot, and I really liked Aiduel’s Sin, but something about Gatebound just wasn’t quite hitting the mark for me, and I’m not sure I can pinpoint exactly what it was, or if it was a combination of smaller things rather than one individual.

I did find the opening few chapter rotations to be a bit slow – it felt like a bit of scene setting was taking place to get us up to speed with where our four Illborn were at. I also felt that when things did properly get going, I wasn’t as invested in the action as I had been in at least the previous book. Everything feels a bit too easy now, with the powers that the Illborn have, and although things don’t always go their way, there doesn’t generally feel like there will be any lasting problems for them. Granted, one of the four did have some moments that threatened to subvert that expectation, and I thought that was one of the high points of the book.

Other than that, the battles didn’t feel as intense, and especially the avoidance of battle that two of our Illborn face for a good portion of the final third just felt a little strange. Some of the writing was also a bit clunky, notably with a heavy use of “whom” and “which” in places where I thought they should be omitted – using them felt like it was interrupting the flow of the writing a bit for me.

Overall, I’m still at a net positive for the series, but this one was a step down from the previous two in my estimation. I’m hopeful that the final book in the Illborn Saga will be a return to the highs I felt earlier in the series, and it can finish with a bang!

I had the pleasure of receiving an E-ARC of this book.

Is this book perfect? No. But did I find it hard to put down? Absolutely. So hard, in fact, that I gave it five stars.

The plot is exciting and just the right pace for me. I love the characters… or love to hate the characters in some instances. (I’m looking at you, Allana.)

It ended in a way that I can’t wait for the fourth book. Seriously, DTJ needs to get right on that.

From my bookstagram @fullybookedreader:

Reading The Illborn Saga by Daniel T. Jackson has been a highlight of my reading journey in recent years. I’m so honored that the author gave me an ARC of “Gatebound”, the 3rd book in the epic fantasy series, to read and review before it’s released to the public on February 28, 2025.

“Gatebound” begins with a helpful synopsis that allowed me to get mostly back on track from where I left off. No rereading necessary. Right away the narrative hits all the familiar beats. Switching between the POVs of Allana, Arion, Corin, and Leanna, interspersed with important flashbacks.

I enjoyed seeing the journey to Aiduel’s Gate through the eyes, thoughts, and experiences of each character. The tension behind the thought that there can only be one survivor makes the book so exciting. All 4 characters have good and bad in them, some more than others. And I really don’t think they will just join hands be united at the end of it all.

Each of the 4 has their own inner and worldly demons to conquer. Each of them has good they could do with the godly powers the gate can give them. But what will they actually do with the power, and is there one of them who deserves it more than the rest?

I like how things that took longer to explain in previous, like how each illborn’s power works, is simplified in the third book, allowing for focusing on other things without bogging the story down with unnecessary repetition. The fast-paced narrative combined with strong characterization is definitely a highlight of Daniel Jackson’s writing.

“Gatebound” is another 5-star read for me, and I’m confident book 4 will be too. The illborn Saga continues to be a joy to read. Highly recommended.

3.75. I admit, I find myself somewhat conflicted about this. I thoroughly enjoyed Illborn and Aiduel's Sin, but Gatebound just didn't resonate with me in the same way. I can't put my finger on the exact reason; it might be a combination of smaller issues rather than one significant flaw.

The initial chapters felt a bit sluggish, as they seemed more focused on scene-setting to bring us up to speed with the four Illborn characters. When the plot finally picked up momentum, I realized I wasn't as emotionally invested in the action as I had been in the previous books. With each Illborn being absolutely OP, the stakes felt rather low; despite the occasional setbacks, there seemed to be little risk of lasting consequences. That said, one of the four did experience moments that hinted at subverting this expectation, which I considered the height of the book.

Despite all of this, I still cannot wait for the final book (especially bc I thought THIS was the final book🥲)

Avis Lecture 🧐📖 "Gatebound", Saga Illborn volume 3, Daniel T. Jackson ✨🗡️

I am always a bit nervous when I start a new book from a series I LOVE so much. But I can say that Gatebound is a splendid continuation of The Illborn Saga. The world becomes even richer and wider than it already was, and all that is complemented by the same impeccable writing style and gripping atmosphere as the previous two books. Friendships, epic battles, sea journey, a bit of grimdark moments here and there that I absolutely loved!
The story in Gatebound starts shortly after the events of Aiduel's Sin, and we witness all the action unfolding through our familiar POV's of Arion,Leanna,Corin and Allana with some tough decisions from the very beginning.
While Aiduel's Sin felt more like self searching and looking for answers for the characters in Gatebound, it was more like a game of chess. You're a front-row witness how all the pieces make their move on the board and how intricately their stories intertwine or affect the other like a ripple in water. Furthermore, the way all our main characters evolve throughout their journey and their motivations for gaining that immense power makes you wonder….in the end, are they so different from one another, and where is the thin line between good or bad?
Those questions were echoed by the complicated relationships between the characters and all the hard truths, emotional decisions, and rifts that transpired between them.
All that is addressed in a brilliant way that doesn't give you straight answers but instead makes you seek your own truth.
I won't get into detail what my favorite new friendship was because of spoilers …but I will say that I loved from the beginning the chemistry and friendship between Leanna, Caddin, and Amys and now even more!
Now that I finished book 3.....i sort of want book 4 NOW, but then again, I don't want the story to end 😂❤️🙈

If you’ve been following me for a bit, you’ve seen me gush over this incredible series. GATEBOUND is book three of four, and I was honored to have been able to read an early copy of it. I had no doubts that I would love this one as much as the first two. The way Jackson writes each character’s arc is so completely engaging. I’m typically not one for multiple POVs, but I find myself anticipating the next storyline every time a chapter ends. This series has it all, and if you’re a fan of epic fantasy with real and flawed characters, unique magic systems, and intricate world building + politics, you HAVE to give it a try. These books are impossible to put down once you start. The pacing is perfect. Never too fast but never slow enough that you want to pause. Easy five stars, but that isn’t a surprise!

A fantastic third book in the series, highly recommend!

This was a great addition to the series with a great last 150 pages that I couldn't put down until I finished. With superb set pieces, characters, battles and revelations, every chapter in Daniel Jackson's books feels integral to the story and I never feel that there is unnecessary filler.
It still surprises me that this epic fantasy series remains largely under the radar and I hope more people will give it a try now the third book is out. Potential TV or film material??
Top notch and I definitely recommend for anyone looking for a deep adult fantasy.
I can't wait for the fourth and final book in the series.

I received an eARC from Daniel T Jackson himself but unfortunately I was stuck in a super long book before actually getting around to this.

Anyways, I digress.

Gatebound is the 3rd installment for the Illborn Saga and the pace does not let down. The streamlined pacing Daniel excells at continues with this novel as I have not had one dull moment reading this exceptional self published installment.

I am left with conflicting theories for the final installment and that's what I absolutely love. If you enjoy a digestible, fast paced novel with unique 4 main characters, give the Illborn Saga a shot.

One of my favourite self pub series.

Giving this 4 stars. But is this mainly because it’s one of my favorite series? Umm…There were a lot of great parts to this and it did a great job of setting the stage for the final book. But also, none of the main characters felt as compelling to me this go-around and maybe too much of this book was just setting up the next? If this does get a bonus star because I heart the series so much, oh well. I am an adult and can do as I please.

Loved the themes around religion in this. Particularly in regards to Crusades; and how the ‘enemy’ are ‘infidels’ because….of course they are? Organized religion and the church played heavily into this volume. Mostly in a bad light, so I was on board and here for it. The duality of good and evil was also a huge part of this, as a clear divide was fully formed here. Good stuff.

Characters. Mostly meh character development in this one; as it was very plot-centric. For me, Alana’s chapters were the ones I most looked forward to. Her….methods of solving any issues is a bit one-note, but there were several times where this blew up in her face and she panicked; which made for good content, imo. Leanna and Corin were a bit too ‘goody two shoes’ here for me and Arion is just a mess, often in a way that just didn’t hit for me.

Not the best Ilborn book, no, but still more than enough to make me smile and love it. This is definitely in the running for, if not established as, a top ten all-time series for me.

I received an e-arc from the author, this is my review..

I was glad to get back to the tales of these four Illborn, so many question left from book 2, so many new questions with this one. But first Alana is still my favourite character, I just love a women who has been through so much and decides no more.
Leanna I still find to be annoying thinking she’s bette than the rest but she’s religious and most people know my view on religion, but she just seemed to be always judging others and throwing tantrums if they didn’t do things her way, her reluctance to kill when needed was just stupid.
Arion, well he turned into a drunk and managed to push everyone away, he lost everything so made up for it by been a killer of what the holy church deems infidels..
Corin is just two nice for his good, but he’s loyal.
Now they all know the full contents of the dream the race is on to see who claims the power, but Corin dropped a bombshell on what he believes the dream really is. They all want the power but Leanna and Corin believe the others not worthy.
Alana has taken the fight to the Archlaw and is destroying the church from within, I say good for her.
I really enjoyed getting back to the adventures of these 4 and reading how they or at least a couple of grown, I’m not a fan of Leanna and her self righteous ways, this series is a good reminder why religion is bad.
The story was fast faced and the twists just kept coming, everything just flowed and felt natural, it was nice to have a bit more backstory into Aiduel and the church its self, how such a cover up has been maintained for so long, I did feel that Alana’s chapters were short and the incident in the Archlaws palace felt a little rushed.
The book ended on a cliffhanger and it’s gonna be interesting to see what happens next.

This series uses a religion as one of it main aspects. It not something found in a lot of fantasy book I have read lately. The religious story arc in the Illborn Saga reminds me of Fyodor Dostoevsky's novella found in the The Brothers Karamazov The The Brothers Karamazov has a character that is a writer and Fyodor includes one of the writer's works in the novel itself called The Grand Inquisitor, so a book within a book. If you have never read this novella I highly recommend it. Daniel keeps the story going with excellent plot and pace. Great character development throughout the series as each of the 4 main character come in to their power. There is going to be a 4th book, so I eagerly await the next installment,

It is rare in my experience that a multipart series doesn't loose its edge at some point (at least slightly). However, the third part was just as addictive to read as the previous two parts. Again - as it was with the previous two books - I could hardly put the book down and finished it only in a few days. It feels to me there are no filler pages, everything that happens is interesting and wants you to read on.

Now that I've read it I really want to know, no, I need to know what happens in #4 of the saga. If I were forced to name one negative thing about this saga, it would be that at this point in time the forth book will only be released some time in the future. So if you don't want to to wait mid-story, wait until it is finished and then read them all. If you can stomach the waiting time and you are a fan of fantasy books, I can recommend the series to you wholeheartedly.

Gatebound, the third installment in Daniel T. Jackson’s Illborn Saga, continues the journey of the four Illborn as they struggle to control their growing powers and navigate their intertwined destinies.

Jackson’s storytelling remains compelling, blending action sequences with character development. Arion, Leanna, Corin, and Allana each face personal dilemmas that test their morals and motivations, deepening their arcs within an intricately woven narrative. Set against the backdrop of an expanded and richly detailed world, the Gatebound further explores the complexities of its characters and their evolving relationships.

However, I did feel that Gatebound suffered from some of the same issues that were present in the first two books. The pacing feels uneven, with certain sections dragging due to excessive introspection and slower-moving subplots. At times, the story feels scattered, as multiple perspectives and conflicts compete for attention. While the character work is well done, the plot progression often takes a backseat, making the novel feel more like a bridge to the next installment rather than a fully satisfying entry on its own. An enjoyable if somewhat conflicting reading experience.
