Mated by Fire #2

Roaring Flames

Rate this book
The only way to control the flames is to light the match yourself.

For the first time in my life, I thought I had everything I ever wanted—friends, a family, and maybe even a boyfriend…or two. But everything changes when I discover that those closest to me have been keeping secrets.

Apparently, humans aren’t the only beings in the world.

My new guy friends are wolf shifters, and they’ve claimed me as their mate. How is that possible, when I also have feelings for my childhood best friend Grayson and I’m developing feelings for the aloof, mysterious Ansel? Not to mention my sexy vice principal.

My search for answers leads me down a road I’m not sure I can return from. I always assumed I was human, but maybe…

Maybe I was always meant to be something more.

All I know is that I need to pick a side in the battle to come or the roaring flames will kill us all.

Roaring Flames is book two of the Mated by Fire series. This is a why choose/reverse harem romance, meaning the FMC will not have to choose a single love interest at the end of the series. This book will end on a cliffhanger. Please read the author note In the beginning of the book for a detailed trigger warning.

This was really entertaining, although, I don't think things moved forward enough. There's a lot of extra detail in this without the character romance or the plot moving forward much. Most of our questions have not yet been answered, and I need these characters to communicate more. That said, I still gobbled this up. I like the characters, and I like the story - I just need MORE from it. Ya know? I don't know how to describe it. I need some answers. We need to know what Izzy is, Ansel needs control of his powers, Ethan needs to open up more to Izzy, and Reid needs to be healed. We also need Grayson, Christian, and Ansel to be folded into scenes more with the rest of the pack.

I was excited by the epilogue though. Her crazy dad sounds like such a fun character.

Ugh.
If I had to sum this book up with two words it would be, cluster fuck.
This book is just all over the place. There’s way too much going on. There’s nothing tangible that you can hold onto and enjoy because everything is constantly changing or not happening. It’s beyond annoying. Everything is a question or a secret or misinformation. And again, there’s just way too much going on. They’re like 100 characters and every character has something going on all at once.
There’s no time to enjoy anything. You can’t enjoy any of her relationships with her possible mates. You can’t enjoy any of her friendships or her relationship with her foster family. I’m not even sure why this takes place in high school cause she’s never ever in school.
All that happens in this book is that she finds out that she’s supernatural. And then she’s pissed at everybody. And everybody is either upset or angry and all because of misinformation and secrets.
The only person that has somewhat of an interesting storyline was Ansel. And we didn’t really get much of that either.
The whole thing with the hunters and the other supernatural that are hunting each other it’s just all very confusing.
New characters keep getting added, even though we still have so many millions of questions with the other characters that we had.
And poor Jake. They made him a fucking golem?! Like really they could’ve made him anything cooler than a fucking clay man!?! Poor boy was done dirty.

We’re just not given enough to keep me interested in this book or the series. Like I said, there’s nothing tangible that you can hold onto to enjoy while you go along the roller coaster. If that makes any sense ,there’s no real relationship
Progression. I’ll just never understand why she made this an RH book. Why give her so many mates if you’re not gonna do anything with them relationship wise? I just don’t fucking get it. Or if you have to only give her two or three. But why fucking seven?

I honestly don’t even know why she started this series when she hasn’t finished Fae revealed. Which in my opinion was 1000 times more interesting and had way better characters. She needs to go focus on that and finish that series.

legitimately finished this like 3 days ago and i already can't remember what happened... but it was a vibe for sure!! this series always succeeds in bringing me so much joy and entertainment, i'm not entirely sure where the plot is going (or what the plot it), but the men are obsessed, the main character isn't annoying, and there's some adorable platonic bonds. that's all i really need!!

Warning: Rant about to ensue...ummm did you forget your character's name in the first book was spelled Sydney? Because in book two her name is Sidney. The editing for these books was absolutely abhorrent.

I have to stop with this book. A vampire named Edward? Really? And a friend who is a supernatural being but is friends with wolf shifters, named Jake? Really? Someone in the harem named Christian and another with the last name of Grey? Really? 🤣

I can look over grammatical errors because it's indie authors. The cringe that is both of these books though, I just can't do another one. I gave them a go, and they are a big no. Editing was poorly done. The amount of drama! There were sooooooo many subplots of characters and the drama with it. Then povs that we didn't even need!

One of my other big issues is the phrase "homes in". It's "hones in". "Homes in" is when you're actually moving toward something. "Hones in", is when your eyes catch and you focus on it. That phrase though, I could have done without it after the first 2 or 3 times. Overuse. As well as "forking fingers". Can you just say combed through? Or frustratingly combed his fingers through his hair? Constant forking was so irritating and not a great description.

The characters apparently have no other facial expression except blushing. They are all tomato people.

🎶 He was my best friend and that was the worst part" 🎶

For the first time in Izzy's (h) life, everything seems to be falling into place—she has friends, a loving family, and maybe even the chance for a boyfriend or two. But that fragile sense of peace shatters when she uncovers the shocking truth: those closest to her have been hiding something significant. Apparently, humans aren’t the only beings in the world. Her new guy friends—Ashton, Reid, Emery, and Ethan (H)—are wolf shifters, and they’ve marked her as their mate. The revelation leaves her reeling, especially since she’s also developing strong feelings for her childhood best friend, Grayson, and the enigmatic, aloof Ansel. And as if that wasn't complicated enough, there's also the vice principal who's caught her attention.

─── ・ 。゚☆: THOUGHTS*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

[Grayson]

“I’m mad at you,” I breathe out, even as I arch my neck to grant him better access.

“You can be mad at me,” he assures me silkily.

“You can yell at me, snap at me, hate me—”

“I could never hate you.” I mean for the words to sound strident, adamant, but they’re nothing but a whisper.

Izzy and Grayson had such great potential as a couple, and it was so frustrating when they finally acted on their feelings for each other, only for things to go sideways. They share such a strong bond, and I really wanted to see them go all in. But then, the next day, Grayson gets captured by the vampires, and just like that, he’s MIA. The whole thing where he can’t contact her because he’s being tortured—ugh. Izzy’s left thinking he’s just ghosting her, like he doesn’t want her anymore, and that’s just the worst part. She has no idea what’s actually going on, and she’s assuming the worst about him. He’s her best friend, and she’s in this emotional limbo, thinking he’s ignoring her when, in reality, he’s probably fighting for his life. It makes sense that she’d be hurt, but it was so frustrating to see her go through that when we all knew the truth. Then, when he comes back and explains that he was captured, I just wanted to shake both of them. At least they told each other how they really felt, which was the silver lining, but still, I was missing Grayson so much during all that time. That whole situation could have been avoided if he’d just been able to explain, but I’m glad they’re finally on the same page by the end.

[Ansel]

“The great Ansel is skipping school,” I say in feigned horror. “What would everyone think?”

“That I’ve gone mad,” he mumbles under his breath.

Even still, I can’t help but say, “That makes two of us.”

“What do you say, Isabella Martin? Do you want to skip school and go on an adventure with me today?”

My warlock king— I love him so much. He started off being such an asshole, especially to her, but now he’s made such a complete 180. It’s like he’s not just trying to protect her, but actually get to know her, care for her, and be her friend. The effort he puts in is just so sweet, and seeing how awkward and adorable he gets around her when he’s nervous? Chef’s kiss. It’s one of those moments where you realize how far he’s come and how much he genuinely cares. He’s clearly got a huge crush on her—there’s no hiding that, and it’s just adorable. The fact that he helped her when she was injured in the first book just shows how much he’s already invested in her. Ansel, my baby—protect yourself, king. I’m just rooting for him so hard. He’s come a long way, and I’m so here for his growth and how he’s been there for her. I really want to see him get the peace he deserves because he's had such a rough start, and now I’m just obsessed with him.

[Reid]

Don’t worry about me. I won’t be pursuing the mating bond or any of that shit,” he grumbles.

“You won’t?”

“I won’t,” he confirms gruffly. And then, in a voice that’s nearly inaudible, he adds, “You don’t want me as a mate.”

Honestly, I don’t even care if he’s cursed. The way he opened up to her about how he felt so unworthy because of his appearance was heartbreaking. When he told her he didn’t want to be with her, that he thought he wasn’t good enough to be her mate—it just hit me right in the feels. He genuinely believed that his looks and his curse were something that would turn her away, but Izzy’s response was everything. She didn’t care about any of that. The fact that she told him she liked him just the way he was and didn’t find him disgusting was such a cute moment. She saw past his physical appearance, and it was so sweet because you could tell how much that reassurance meant to him. And then, the blush—he was so vulnerable, and seeing him blush made me want to hug him. It was honestly so pure. I felt so bad for him because he didn’t just lose his wolf and his looks, he lost a part of himself that he would never be able to get back. vThat’s gotta be so tough, and the fact that he’s dealing with all of this on top of everything else just makes me so sad for him. But despite all that, Izzy doesn’t care. She kisses him anyway, and that moment was just so powerful. It showed how much she really saw him for who he was, not what he looked like or the curse that had been placed on him. Poor Reid, but I’m so glad that Izzy was there to remind him that he’s worthy of love, just as he is.

[Ethan]

“We barely know what type of person she is,” Ethan points out. “We pushed her away. We can blame Ashton all we want, but it’s all of our faults. You. Me. Reid. Ashton.”

He really did no wrong. He was trying to protect Izzy, even though it wasn’t the best way to go about it. Keeping things from her was definitely not ideal, but I totally understand why he did it. The guilt he carries over his addiction and how it led to the deal with Desiree’s father is so heavy. He’s always been trying to fix things, but it feels like the weight of the situation is crushing him, and it affects the entire pack too. It’s so sad because you can tell he never meant for any of it to go this way. It’s sad to see how he constantly punishes himself over something that was, in some ways, out of his control. His addiction wasn’t something he chose for himself—it was something he struggled with. But now, he’s carrying this huge burden because of the deal that came from it, and it’s affecting everyone around him. I totally get Izzy’s frustrations too. She felt betrayed, and I can see why she’d be angry, especially since he was keeping such a huge part of his life from her. That’s a lot to process, especially when you care so much about someone.

[Emery]

Instead, his features pinched in pain and regret, he says, “Izzy, I’m so damn sorry—”

“Save your apologies, Emery.” Just before I exit the classroom, I turn to him. “And you don’t have to worry about having a human as a mate. I reject you, Emery. I reject your entire pack.”

I love Emery — He’s got that flirty charm and confidence, but underneath it all, he’s actually so invested in making things right with Izzy. The way he decided he wasn’t going to stop trying to get her to talk to him again? Chef’s kiss. I admire his persistence, even though he probably could’ve given her a little more space after everything went down. But he just couldn’t let it go, and I love that about him. He knew he messed up by keeping the truth from her, and she definitely had every right to be upset, but you can see how much he genuinely cares about her and wants to fix things. Honestly, I get why he kept some things from her in the first place—like, who would just outright believe someone if they were told supernatural creatures exist? It’s a lot to process, and in his mind, maybe he was protecting her from that huge shift in her reality. But still, the secrecy definitely put a strain on their relationship, and I think he recognized that. But despite all that, Emery really wants to make things right. I love that he’s not giving up on her and is doing everything he can to show that he wants to be there for her. His determination to get Izzy to listen to him, even when it was hard, just shows how much he’s willing to fight for her.

[Christian]

“You want a question?” Each word is slow and succinct. “Fine. Which questions should I ask?”

“You should ask what I am. What my brother is. What his friends are.” I pause, considering, before adding, “What you are.”

I love how Christian was the one to be upfront with Izzy about everything. He was the first person to actually tell her the truth about the supernatural world, and that was huge. She was already dealing with so much, especially with the mark and everything, and he knew she needed to understand what was happening around her to make sense of it all. I think that honesty really stood out to her. Even though he kept some things hidden, like about the mate mark, his reason was clear—he didn’t want to burden her or hurt her by overwhelming her with all the information too soon. He was protecting her, not for some ulterior motive, but because he genuinely cared about her well-being. Izzy really respected that, and I think it showed in how she handled their relationship, even when things were complicated. She didn’t hold it against him that he kept things hidden, because deep down, she knew it was about protecting her from the chaos of the supernatural world. The fact that he was willing to sacrifice telling her everything for her safety speaks volumes about his character. The end of the book had me on edge. I was really worried about Christian going feral, but at the same time, I kind of saw it coming. The stakes are so high now, and I’m honestly looking forward to the next book to see how things play out. I really want to see how he and Izzy navigate this new phase of their relationship, especially with everything going on. I wish I could’ve started the next book right away too. Hopefully, things don’t get too chaotic for him, but knowing how things are going, I’m not so sure.

[Ashton]

“This”—I hold up Isabella’s arm so her mating mark catches in the light—“is a mistake.”

“A mistake,” Isabella repeats numbly.

“My pack has already chosen a mate.”

“We’ll be mated to Desiree after graduation. We chose her.”

Ashton is the worst because he took it upon himself to reject Izzy on behalf of the entire group, assuming that his decision was for the greater good of his pack and people. He didn’t even speak to the others about it, leaving Izzy to believe that the whole group was leading her on and playing with her emotions. He acted rashly, without reasoning, and made decisions based on his unfounded fears. In the end, Ashton told Izzy that the group didn’t want her, and that they were involved with Desiree, leaving her feeling completely abandoned and hurt. His actions were entirely misguided and cruel, which makes it even more satisfying when Izzy rejects him in return. It’s clear that Ashton messed up—he didn’t consider the consequences of his actions, and ultimately, he pushed her away when she needed him the most.

─── ・ 。゚☆: OVERALL*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

I need the next book right now. Desiree and Izzy’s friendship is everything. Their bond is so special, and the fact that Desiree already saw them being close like sisters in the future? Ugh, I could absolutely sob too.

HOOOOOOLLLYYYY MOSESS!!

That ending! *Dramatic hand swipe with my body falling. Like hot Damn! Katie sure knows how to catch a readers attention. There was so much to unpack at the end….
So Izzy, knows about the paranormal world now. She knows Ansel is a warlock, Ethan, Emery, Christian, Ashton are wolves. Hale and Gerry tell her about how they knew her mother, and how she died but they couldn’t find her. How Izzy is half wolf and half witch. That she has DADS! She knows Grayson is a Vampire, and thank frig she finally let Grayson back into her life. They had a fabulous night after their reunion from Grayson being locked up from the first book. Desiree, and Izzy make up near the end and she forgives her for her part after she learns why Izzy’s mates are being blackmailed into being Desiree’s mate.
Ashton, the idiot who pushed Izzy away every chance he could. Finally realized what an IDIOT he was. Izzy didn’t react the way he expected.
Honestly I was expecting Izzy to bring out her fighting experience. She did a bit but not enough to change anything. Now she’s taken by the Crone, the Mother and the maiden. The Mother is her own birth mother’s sister. A crazy witch after what’s in her blood. There’s a secret dad out there who everyone seems to be afraid of. But he’s there for his daughter only and I can not WAIT to see him fudge stuff up! Need the 3rd book immediately!!

Like the first book, this is written like a teen book, but has adult themes. The story is all over the place!
-villain in first book, where the heck is he and what is he doing…no mentions, just one horrifying thing in the first book?

-people go missing or disappear and no one looks? Grayson

-no relationships are developed between the ‘mates’ I guess too many of them to do that, your head spins with how many!

-how many different story lines and introductions to everyones history can you put in, face slap!🤦🏼‍♀️

However, will I read the next book, probably, sigh, I want to know what happens, and does anything get resolved?!

This was a complete mess. So much happened with no resolution. Izzy will find something out or something would happen and everyone would just move on and forget about it? No one will try to figure it out what to do or how to get rid of the issue? Izzy's personality doesn't make sense, you're a fighter but act like a weak girl sometimes. All very juvenile too. The only real action happened at the very end and we get one or two answers. Also, who was the unknown POV from the first book? Was it supposed to be one of her fathers or something? If so that's disgusting because it talks about watching Izzy and getting turned on. Why do we keep getting side characters POV?

Izzy is finding her groove in her new home and has a few possible boyfriends, she is not ready to jump all in given her past but she is happy. Then she finds out why her best friend Grayson has kept his distance, drawing them closer together. Then she is stunned to find out that the men she has grown close too have not been telling the truth. Surrounded by people she is uncertain if she can trust given the secret revealed about who she really is. As the past catches up to the present Izzy is in more danger then before, who will be by her side during it all?

Riveting, I am excited by what is coming in the next book. So many intriguing characters I want to know more about. Once you pick up the book you can't put it down, full of twists and turns.

Mild spoilers ahead!

I was curious the direction of this series based on the first book. Even though the first book wasn't the most amazing thing ever, if I'm intrigued by a plot line enough then I'll read the next book to get an understanding of the authours intentions. But I must say, I'm not sure that I even know what's happening.

There were sooo many things happening in this book with no ending that it was all just an amalgamation of stories thrown together.

And something that I absolutely loathe in any book is miscommunication. There are extremely rare cases that I can see it actually benefiting the story but this one irked me.

And don't get me started on Ashton's insistence on pushing Izzy away because all he can think about is the "safety of his pack". I'm so tired of stories where characters use any excuse they can and claiming it to benefit others when they can't get over their own trauma and pain to see they are doing the same thing to the people they are trying to protect. And I like that Izzy told him he was a idiot for doing so. But it shouldn't be her to do so. Characters that do so make themselves out to be the villain in their own story and most of the time it is to their detriment. Ashton does claims if he needs to be the villain then so be it. But WHY?

I wish this book had more substance to it. Everything still feels superficial and shallow that I'm trying to sift through this story but all I can find is rock bottom.

That ending. Urgh. I have started way too many unfinished series and it's driving me mad. As mentioned in my review of the first book, the writing is still too overwritten. However, the story is picking up, and we're finally getting some of the answers, but we're still missing a lot.

Izzy is collecting are rather large harem, and I'm curious to see how that will work. There are also still quite a few mistakes and plot holes in the story. .

Lissa's actions also seem a bit extreme. So does Jake's to be honest. I understand, that they will have a response to the trauma, but I wish it would have been handled differently.

The story is still very captivating, and I will definitely read the last book, when it comes out. Especially with that cliff-hanger.

After the first book, I decided to read this one for fun. Usually I would DNF but I thought to myself….why don’t you give it a chance?

Long story short, I am entirely confused about the development of this story. Every 50 pages there was something being added for a plot thickener but it didn’t make sense. Every male love interest has a terrible past with an ex or in Reid’s case random obsessive girl. This felt like it lacked appropriate planning and could’ve been executed much better.

I also have to point out that there is a part of the book that is plagiarism. Remember the Cat x Violet scene in fourth wing where cat talks about what she taught Xaden? Yeah, the author of this book added that scene. Should’ve DNF’d after that.

I really enjoy this series

I really enjoy this series and all the things I learn. The way the writing is is fantastic some of Katie May’s best work. This is the most detailed and fleshed out plot I’ve read from her imo. This book doesn’t pick up immediately back where we left off but it gives us sooo much more explanations into the mysteries surrounding Izzy, her mates, her foster parents and more. The plot is so intertwined that I’m excited to see where it goes. Izzy does find out about her mates and we suspect some others might be her mates as well. Izzy when she does find out gets mad about all the lies and I completely understand where she is coming from especially due to her history as a foster kid who had to move often and not really build relationships.

There’s still some things we don’t know, Lissa and what she is, who blew up the theater and why, Sidney showing up at Grayson’s house, honestly I’m surprised she wasn’t at the BBQ. I expected some confrontation there. I really can’t wait to read more I love this cast of characters and this world. It’s both treacherous and funny, both sad and happy a lot of duality.

Well, basically nothing important happened. I think it would have been better as a regular romtasy not a rh, because all those dudes did absolutely nothing. I guess Ansel was okay. The “fantastic four” were so irrelevant at this point. I still think she should choose Grayson. The others made no effort to get to know her, to grovel or smth, yet expect so much. Tbh the “Daddy’s home bitches!” Was the most interesting part of the book 🤷🏻‍♀️
And dont even get me started on Jake! Clay man? Seriously?
It felt so degrading on his behalf.
Have no idea why there is a third foster kid as he is not even in the second book, shit he is barely in the first one.

So good

So good I downloaded at midnight and am just now heading to bed at not quite 6 am..... I am a bit disappointed that Izzy and her mates were at odds for most of the book and only had a few interactions, but we did get a lot of answers (and a lot more questions too!) to move the plot forward. And those last chapters were so unexpected and horrifying. But that epilogue, I love Travon already!! Daddy's home bitches 🤣

better than expected

This was definitely better than I expected it to be. I’m unsure if this is a trilogy or what cause if it’s a trilogy then I’m unsure how it’s going to wrap up in time.

Also there better be some mating next book. I’m getting a little annoyed about the lack thereof.

Skip this one. It was terrible.

I don't understand why all book twos have to be so bad. I mean, I get that you're trying to fill in stuff, but this one didn't do anything. If anything it left me with more questions, I don't mind a good cliffhanger, but book 2 for Made It by Fire, is not very good. I want my credits back. In the narrator for the female character, her voice is so monotone that I literally would fall asleep and have to skip spots. I don't know what they did with the other one. The other narrator was so much better than the one they've gotten out, I hope they switch back to her because this one turned me through
