“I’m mad at you,” I breathe out, even as I arch my neck to grant him better access.
“You can be mad at me,” he assures me silkily.
“You can yell at me, snap at me, hate me—”
“I could never hate you.” I mean for the words to sound strident, adamant, but they’re nothing but a whisper.
“The great Ansel is skipping school,” I say in feigned horror. “What would everyone think?”
“That I’ve gone mad,” he mumbles under his breath.
Even still, I can’t help but say, “That makes two of us.”
“What do you say, Isabella Martin? Do you want to skip school and go on an adventure with me today?”
Don’t worry about me. I won’t be pursuing the mating bond or any of that shit,” he grumbles.
“You won’t?”
“I won’t,” he confirms gruffly. And then, in a voice that’s nearly inaudible, he adds, “You don’t want me as a mate.”
“We barely know what type of person she is,” Ethan points out. “We pushed her away. We can blame Ashton all we want, but it’s all of our faults. You. Me. Reid. Ashton.”
Instead, his features pinched in pain and regret, he says, “Izzy, I’m so damn sorry—”
“Save your apologies, Emery.” Just before I exit the classroom, I turn to him. “And you don’t have to worry about having a human as a mate. I reject you, Emery. I reject your entire pack.”
“You want a question?” Each word is slow and succinct. “Fine. Which questions should I ask?”
“You should ask what I am. What my brother is. What his friends are.” I pause, considering, before adding, “What you are.”
“This”—I hold up Isabella’s arm so her mating mark catches in the light—“is a mistake.”
“A mistake,” Isabella repeats numbly.
“My pack has already chosen a mate.”
“We’ll be mated to Desiree after graduation. We chose her.”
