Me reviewing this book amongst the gushing tiktok groupies.
Obviously, I'm on book three so clearly I found enough *something* to continue reading. In all fairness, each of the installments are short reads so it only took me a little over a day to get here.
But this is the end of the line for me. I can't say whether this book in particular was poorly done, or whether this deep-seated annoyance was cumulative. Either way, I've made it to 52% of Vicious Souls and I can't bring myself to finish.
I'd love to start by saying something positive about the series, but honestly I'm much too aggravated to dig that deeply right now. Perhaps I'll circle back around for an update, but for now I'm going to rant for a long long time so I don't throw my Kindle against a wall...
Let's start with the fact that the world building sucks.
The creativity is there, which is frustrating in and of itself. It has potential, but in essence this is a naked mannequin in a store window waiting to be dressed... and the clothes are on a rack right next to it.
So much of this world is compartmentalized, inexplicable, or just plain absent, that as the reader I felt like I was watching some 80's sitcom with a laugh track. Just brief, repetitive scenes playing out on a handful of generic sets with the same small cast of equally generic "quirky" characters.
Which brings me to the main contributor to that sentiment...
There is a lot of missing information.
Strategically cultivated negative space is essential to build interest and suspense, so I not only accept that I'll need to be deprived of pivotal details, I crave it.
However, the missing information in this series is not strategic or methodical. It's not hinted at or alluded to - the data simply isn't there. That deficiency made for a very confusing experience as I kept reading into things, searching for hidden pieces that didn't actually exist.
Unfortunately, confusion does not create complexity... it's just a product of bad writing.
By this third installment, I finally realized that not only were there no depths to mine but the author goes out of their way to openly explain things that didn't require explanation. Is that patronizing? Or does the author think so little of their ability to Show that they need to always follow with a Tell?
Needless to say, it felt much like someone telling a Knock Knock joke, then elbowing my ribs saying, "Get it?!" Yeah, I freaking get it
Just because it's your world and your characters, doesn't mean they can do whatever they want whenever they want.
This might come as a surprise, but you have to make it make sense. Literally. You have to put in the effort. Groundwork must be laid.
You can't just have people appear or disappear when you want them to because that's easier to write. You can't shift someone's personality at the drop of a hat because it's suddenly useful for forward momentum. The presence of magic doesn't make your story immune to logic - if anything, you have to be more conscientious not less in order to maintain the suspension of disbelief.
But here I am, three books in, still having my poor eyeballs marinated in an egregiously artificial plot and its band of merry convenient idiots.
This series is just one giant contrived plot device with very little rhyme, reason, or continuity to actions, characters, timeline, world, or anything else. Nothing is clever or finessed, it's just clunky, brute laziness wreaking havoc on any attempt at coherent reasoning. For instance:
The author is a two-trick pony when it comes to character reactions.
1. Jaws dropping
2. People gaping
That's it. In fact, the formula for most scenes is essentially:
- Something bad/dramatic happens
- MC does something sassy/snarky to show their "strength"
- Someone gapes in shock or their jaw drops
I can't emphasize enough how torturous this repetition was once I noticed it... because then I couldn't NOT notice it. So, each and every time jaws dropped or people gaped in surprise I wanted to Hulk out and break something. It was like noticing someone tapping their pen next to you. tap tap tap
I hate every freaking nickname in this book.
Venom is dumb
The Elite is dumb
Supreme bitch is dumb
Hex is dumb
They're unimaginative, they're trying too hard, they're inorganic and awkward on the tongue, and I hate them. The author is lucky that X Æ A-12 sets the bar so high for worst names, or they'd be a serious competitor.
I've read so much fantasy fiction that you would think something like this wouldn't phase me, but surprise!
Stop. Adding. Periods. Between. Every. Word. Of. A. Sentence. Just. To. Add. Emphasis.
The gratuitous use of this type of punctuated speech feels like the author is one step away from adding a clapping emoji between words. This isn't a text message or Twitter, it's a book. Seriously, please just stop.
This trend is fine in small bites, but the same thing can be accomplished without sounding like a stomping toddler tantrum or someone snapping their fingers back and forth in your face.
Oh look, a tropey jealous mean girl.
Selene is a repulsive character, but not for any of the reasons one might initially think. She, as a construct, is repulsive. I hate the type of writing that she represents, how this dead-horse keeps getting beaten despite there being a vast universe of alternatives to build similar rivalries and conflict. The utter apathy required for an author to continue to trudge on using these fermenting carcasses of low hanging fruit is difficult to fathom.
There is so much more that I want to rant about, but I think I've finally lost steam.
So, in summation...

KC KEAN’S WRITING IS ADDICTIVE!!
I'm loving this series so much. It picks up right after the predecessor and has you on the edge of your seat throughout its entirety.
There's so much action that you HAVE to continue reading. I just want Rhea and the guys to be happy. It will be interesting to see how they will be like and how their dynamic will turn out to be after they deal with all that angst and tension.
I'm super excited for the next book. Highly recommend you read anything from KC Kean!! You will not be disappointed!!!!

I have been a fan of the series since the first page of book 1
Rhea was put in a cage at the end of book 2 because Zellus had made it seem like she was a danger. We start this book off with the Elite looking for her. When they find her, there are some things Xander and Khaos have to talk through with Rhea to bring their group together. Rhea needs all of them to help ground her and her magic but she also wants to be there for them as well. Not to mention Zeus has told her to look for her mother and kill her.
Out of the three books this one is the weakest when it comes to plot. The first two books were 5 stars for me but this one lost a star because it pushed the spice and less plot. I get it, things get spicier, not always my cup of tea when it doesn’t further the plot for me. A little something would happen, boom spice! A smidgen of something else, boom spice! I found myself skipping a lot of it. I wanted more from the story, I feel like it is book 3 and we should be farther in the story than we find oursleves.
I feel like we didn’t learn a whole lot about Nyx, Zeus or Rhea’s significance to the Hex. I also feel like the complex characters from book one became a little one dimensional. Adonis was too whiny and reduced to just sex, as much as we got from Khaos in this book we still don’t know a whole lot about him and I feel like Zen and Xander were a bit boring.
I still really like this series and I like the new family dynamics that were introduced. Zen’s parents are amaze balls. Xander’s parents are on their road to reconnect with their son. Khaos’s mom sucks balls. And I feel like we will see more Hades that will shed better light on him in the next book.
The last couple of chapters were good and the cliffhanger really saved this book for me. Now we are getting somewhere! I just have to wait until December now.

The book before this was better, i definitely expected the ending and nothing else noticeably happened except for Rhea and the guys finally all having sealed souls. Uhm I really wanna finish the series so I'm just gonna read the next one and get it over with tbh. Zeus and Zellus are still assholes, but atleast Khaos finally stopped pushing away Rhea.

Oh my freaking god!!! Ok, BRUTAL cliffhanger!!!
The book picks up right where book 2 left off but we don’t get the answer we’re looking for. It’s left a mystery until the last page of this book and IM HERE FOR IT!!
Rhea is tested pretty hard in this book. Actually they all are. So much happens!!!!! It’s so good!
Selene is still the supreme bitch but she totally steps it up in this book.
Zellus is still shaddddddy af and he totally steps that up in this book too. Someone needs to kill him and fast.
Zens parents are the literal best! They are so supportive and caring in this book. Rhea definitely needs them in her corner.
And Mrs. Black? Fuck her sideways with a pointy stick! She’s the worst!
I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Walking into a trap…
We pick up where book 2 ended with Rhea in a cage in Zellus’ office. Zellus keeps thinking he’s got one over on Rhea but you don’t mess with a mama bear and Zen’s mom shows she’s not to be messed with. Soon he has to release Rhea and come up with another evil plot to get her where he wants her.
Rhea, Adonis, Xander and Zen have sealed their souls and the last but not least Khaos still has a little explaining to do before Rhea lets her guard down for him to finally seal the deal. There is a lot of sexual tension between them all and Adonis is definitely getting fueled by all of it. Lots of action of the steamy kind between Rhea and her guys in this one.
Zellus is up to his tricks and tries to make Rheas life miserable. Starting with trying to get her to take the test to see how powerful her magic will be but she turns the table on him to make the decision to give all the first and second years their powers early. She’s hoping that she made the right decision to get them involved but she can’t take it back.
Now they have little time to figure out what magic they have and how to use the gifts from Pandoras Box before the test. Rhea and her unit are keeping secrets to keep one step ahead of Zellus, Selene and her sidekicks. They know they will be walking into a trap and have prepared as best as they can.
I was prepared for a cliffhanger and boy did KC Kean bring it in this one. Woohoo I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I hope Zellus gets squashed like the bug he is!

Absolutely fantastic, I was completely mesmerised from the very beginning.
The suspense, twists and that ‘unknown’ factor was written so well into the storyline, add in the emerging powers, enemies (both new and old), the hot AF steamy scenes and it all had me on the edge of my chair reading into the wee hours.
Loved seeing the Elite unit’s relationship strengthen further, their protective nature for Rhea is adorable/sexy.
Love how the twins and Harmonia are getting more feisty against Selene the supreme biitcch.
Zellus is as big of a tool as ever, I liked Khaos suggestion for him.
That ending was WOW! Loved it and I have a few theories already about it and will be definitely counting down until I can get my hands on book 4.
Ok, so I’m off to read it again - yes, I need a re-read already it was honestly that good 😊

It was ok
I was so excited for this book! I love the characters and the premise of the story. However, the execution fell flat for me. The routines were monotonous and over used. There easily could have been more depth, mystery, intrigue, and answers added throughout this book. Especially, with some of the secondary characters that surround the main characters. Like why are they always going to the library for answers when you have Hades, Aphrodite, etc as possible resources to get information? There is just so much untapped potential here. The ending was good, but also a little underwhelming in the world building aspect.

OMFG, KC, WHAT DID YOU JUST DO?!?! I'm hoping a certain demon was using glamor to make it look like what happened happened, but didn't ACTUALLY happen. Ugh, I've been a victim of this woman's cliffies once more. Will I ever learn?!
This had SO much happening. Omg, it was non stop action! The relationships are kicked up several notches, the emotions were just top level here, and I'm not just talking about the three relationships that have already been fleshed out, so yes, that means that Khaos finally pulled his head out of his ass and it was GLORIOUS. I just love all these men and I can't find it in me to have a favorite anymore. Plus Rhea is turning more badass with each installment of this series and I LOVE it.
One thing I don't love? Zellus. This dude needs to get smote. He needs to yeet his inflated God like ego the clear fuck off cause all he does is stir up shit and threaten our girl. I am sick of it. I'm hoping when Rhea gets full access to her powers she knocks his ass go the motherfucking grouuuunnnddd.
Man, I just love this author so much. She packs so much in her books and still leaves me with wanting so much more -- not because her books are lacking in any way, but because she's THAT good! All I know is that this is one of the best paranormal series I've read, and i can't WAIT for December!!!! Go one click this amazing series now!!

The series is good overall so far. If you like supernatural academy / RH it’s worth a read.
My only issue is how the mcs are treated. They’re all 22/23 yet being treated like they’re 15 year olds? Why are their parents so involved in everything. At their age I had my own children and owned my own house. Yet their parents are all over the place about their school and who they sleep with.
In addition to this the entire suppression thing makes zero sense. You’re telling me for generations no one has known zellus and the hex has suppressed their magic? Not even Zen’s parents who are allegedly so powerful and high ranking they scare zellus?

KC KEAN!! GIRL!! I WAS ON VACTION READING THIS BOOK AND I NEVER LAUGHED SO HARD IN MY LIFE. First thing, I love Rhea and her guys in the Elite. Adonis is still one my favorites, Xander really struggle with the relationship with his parents while our dark angel ,Zen and our final guy to join the connection, Khaos. Each guy is placed in a position to help Rhea understand her background and to fight against Zellus's stupid dramatic rules. Totally agree with Xander or Khaos on sending an email at 6 am for something simple to let them know the trials were going to begin. Overall, I loved this book! It was amazing! It hard enough romance, smut and drama to make you want to read the next one. The ending left us all heart broken but I also know that Adonis gift might have gave us a false image to what might be really happening so I hope that is the case.

Soooo much Smut and so much action.

PNR/Fantasy RH is an obsession of mine and I’ll be honest, so is KC Kean’s Saints Academy! This series has quickly become one of my all time favorites and book three, Vicious Souls, is out today!!
Rhea really comes into her own throughout the book, learning about herself, her past, and her unit. The guys - Xander, Zen, and Adonis - are always there to lift her up and with my guy Khaos finally jumping all the way in, these five are a forced to be reckoned with!
And they need every ounce of that trust and support because Zellus is proving to be not only a serious pain in the a$$, but on a mission to bring our girl Rhea down.
But that ending … 😱😱😱 KC dropped a bomb and walked away, leaving us with a million questions!!

Omg! This series has been something else. Rhea and her men yes Khoas finally finds his head are all together. Zellus is up to something not sure what. But the plot thickens as we are about to go into a major test. The cliffhanger had you wanting to throw your book as you want more information. At least December is not to far away.

February 11, 2023I've hit a motivation snag at 20% with this book. I think it's me and possibly the pacing, but regardless, I need a break.
Recap for when I come back:
Ok, so bk 2 ends with Zellus imprisoning our MFC in a cage in his office and she ends up breaking the seeker charm to summon a fury (we're guessing) to help her.
Bk 3 starts with chaos realizing he's been stupid and they all go to try and find Rhea. When they find her they meet up with Zen's parents and with their help and Rhea threatening Zellus with her knowledge that the Hex is suppressing students powers, Zellus reluctantly releases Rhea and schedules a meeting for the next day
** Lack of communication ensues of course ... Seems like the theme for the series **
In the meeting the Hex says they need to test Rhea's powers so they will know her evil motivations. Rhea then says ... Oh, so you can just bring my powers out? And if that is so, don't you need to test all the first and second year students?" Essentially forcing the Hex to admit they had been suppressing powers (still no motivation for why they are doing this). Xanders parents (who had been on the Hexs side because of something Zellus had told them about Rhea .... Yes, we hv no idea what they were told), and Zen's parents were completely unaware the Hex was doing this to people under the age of 22.
Well, instead of copping to it, Zellus assembles the students together and announces that the Hex has found a brand new method of opening up powers early and the entire student body will be competing to be tested.
Rhea and the guys finally talk about what Rhea saw when she broke the seeker charm, but it is fade to black for the readers. She also reveals she now has a new charm that is different from the first.
Then they all go to gym class where prof. Kiv, or something, has them do a crazy hard work out. During this Adonis tells the group that he researched fury's and there supposedly are three who lived in the underworld. They are something Ike truth, justice and vengeance (my words). So... I'm assuming each seeker is a fury and the first one was the truth.
Now I'm taking a break for a minute from this read :) ... Maybe I'll wait for the audio. They seem to make me less frustrated with the lack of communication trope.

Back onto the world of saints academy and Rhea & her lovers who continue to sweep you off your feet and leave you dickmatized. Instantly thrown back into the thick of Saints Academy and damn this series captivates and leaves you devouring the book.
Rhea is a motherfrigginqueen and she has pure sass and keeps them in check for sure. The jest, sass and comedy Rhea has is consistent and bloody brill! Add in her badassary friendship group with Harmona, Thalia & Cassandra together they wreck havoc & banter!
The twists, turns and unfolding truths will leave you devouring the pages for answers. The mystery that is hidden in there journey is a mind boggle.
I LOVE how they all come together and support eachother it's beautiful. The love, loyality and friendship is goals!

Swear this was almost the exact ending I wanted only it came out of nowhere in the middle of the action. The book is laden with smut and Rhea cementing all her bonds. There’s little plot interspersed, enough to hook you and tired people who need to go. Finally mommy comes calling and I really hope she’s the change the world needs. And can we finally learn what all of Rhea’s powers are already because not knowing is killing me!! Also here’s hoping Nyx can and does eliminate Zeus that nasty fucker and his slimy brother along with him.

Okay, when I binge a series back to back I usually compile all my thoughts into one review so here it is.
I'm really enjoying this series so far. I've given each book a 3 stars because despite the fact that I am enjoying it, there is enough content that bothers me to knock off 2 stars. So first let me write about what I enjoy.
I have really been into reverse harem fantasies lately, so I've been scrounging KU for books exactly like this one. Now normally, books like this aren't super intelligent(?) if that makes sense. But I'm not looking for some masterpiece of a book, I'm looking for entertainment, and this series has kept me really entertained. The idea of this fantasy world is one that I find particularly interesting, although I do wish that some of the world would be explained better and more thoroughly. I guess I mean like the way that their world came to be how it is now, although I'm not counting that as an official complaint because I think a lot of that will be answered in the finale. I like the characters enough, although sometimes some of them can be annoying and stereotypical, I still enjoy them. I REALLY love Adonis, man that guy has me in a choke hold fr. I usually don't find myself favoring the blondies but GOD DAMN, I need him. I also like that despite the fact they're in a school setting, that the characters are 22. As a 20 year old myself, I just don't like reading about high schoolers anymore. Although most books make the main characters like 18 which is annoying. So I'm glad we have actual adults doing adult activities. (Despite the fact that these "adults" act super juvenile but that leads me into what I don't like)
Okay sooooo there's a lot of unnecessary misogyny in this book. Like the FMC is described multiple times as "not like the other girls" and she's just soooo different because she doesn't wear makeup and every guy wants her blah blah blah. It's old and tired and honestly unnecessary. There's other ways to make the FMC "special" than bringing down every girl around her. And OF COURSE the main "villain" is a girl who is jealous of her and wants her "men" because... of course. This brings me into the fact that these 22 year olds really do act like high schoolers. Despite the fact that they are 22 and that this is an "extended education" type of school, if you told me this was high school I would believe it. A lot of the drama is really juvenile and I feel like that takes away from the story a bit. I wish that the series was a bit more moody and mature.
Despite the stuff that I don't like, I think the series is decent and I'm really looking forward to the 4th book.

Band 3 geht genauso wild und spannend weiter.
Ich sag euch ganz ehrlich das ganze ist schon irgendwie ein wilder Gangbang mit einem etwas sehr unrealistischen ***-Verhalten. 😂 Aber hey, irgendwie ist es hier auch einfach n Vibe. Keine Ahnung normalerweise ist sowas nicht unbedingt mein Ding, und zu viel Spice nervt mich eher, aber hier mag ich es einfach irgendwie. 🥸
Die Story geht mal wieder nur langsam voran, aber man erfährt immer kleine neue Sachen. Ich mag auch einfach die Charaktere super gerne, obwohl die 5er Beziehung schon leicht an Besessenheit grenzt haha.
Trotzdem bin ich mal wieder nur so durch die Seiten geflogen - die Bücher sind aber auch alle recht kurz. Es macht einfach Spaß es zu lesen. Ich bin gespannt, wie es weitergeht.
Kann die Reihe allen Leute, die es gerne mal spicy (und aus meiner Sicht so wild, dass es schon wieder lustig ist haha) nur empfehlen. Man sollte kein literarisches Meisterwerk erwarten, aber es ist eine coole, interessante Academy Story mit sehr vielen spicy Szenen. ❤️🔥💭

I have been in the biggest book slump since August after I read Damaged Souls. I needed more Rhea and her Elites so bad I couldn’t focus and get into anything else. The 2 month wait was so worth it! I once again DEVOURED this KC Kean book in an evening. Vicious souls was fanfreakintastic!

This is a fantastic PNR series. I always love KC’s characters and the guys in Saints Academy are no exception. The mystery is still unfolding and I’m on the edge of my seat to see what happens next in December!

I am hooked on this series and don’t completely mind being left on another cliff (although I am very excited for the next book to know what happens next). I have some theories and looking forward to how it unfolds with the suspenseful and twisting way that the story is going so far.

I was a lot more into this but then the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire parallels became too much
