The Quiet War: Canadian Front

Rate this book
Deeds not words. To the members of Canada’s Joint Task Force Two, it isn’t just a motto. It’s a way of life.

Most Canadians have never heard of them, but when a Canadian veteran and a British intelligence officer vanish in Belize, it’s JTF2 that answers the call.

Sergeant Sebastien “Rocky” Ray, reeling from the disappearance of his friend and commander, must lead JTF2's Alpha Team for the first time. The objective is clear: rescue the hostages and eliminate their captor. But the enemy is no ordinary zealot. He is part of a larger design, an architect of upheaval intent on reshaping entire societies.

What begins as a hostage rescue spirals into the opening shots of a Quiet War no one realizes has begun. As loyalty collides with duty and a shadowy adversary maneuvers unseen, Rocky must decide whether to cling to the past or embrace the role that could define his future—and the fate of his nation.

This gripping military, espionage, and political thriller written by Canadian veteran and former intelligence officer Michael J. Lalonde launches The Quiet War: Canadian Front, the debut novel in a bold new series that places Canada and its allies at the centre of a global conflict.

With its tactical realism, global scope, and emotionally grounded characters, it’s perfect for fans of Tom Clancy, Jack Carr, and military political thrillers rooted in today’s world.

I was recently given the opportunity by the author, Michael J. Lalonde, and the fine folks at The Book Whisperer to be granted an ARC edition of this novella (236 pages) in return for an honest review.

The Quiet War: Canadian Front is a military and political thriller that follows Sergeant Sebastien "Rocky" Ray of Canada's elite JTF2 (Joint Task Force Two) as a hostage rescue mission in Belize unravels into the opening stages of a clandestine global conflict. This is the first in an exciting new series where a cabal of adversarial nations (including Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela) seeks to dismantle the Western world, starting with Canada, through a mix of terrorism, subversion, and cyber warfare.

________________________
Formation of JTF2 (1993): In the early 1990s, the Canadian government decided to transition the counter-terrorism role from the RCMP to the military, leading to the creation of Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2) in 1993. JTF2 is a highly secretive, elite Tier One unit with primary tasks including counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and special reconnaissance.

Creation of CANSOFCOM (2006): Following the demands of the post-9/11 security environment and the need for a more coordinated and robust special operations capability, the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) was established on February 1, 2006. This unified command brought existing and new special forces units under a single, high-readiness headquarters.

Modern Structure

CANSOFCOM provides the government with agile, high-readiness forces and reports directly to the Chief of the Defence Staff. Its structure includes:

Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2): The elite counter-terrorism and special operations unit.

Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR): Established in 2006, CSOR is a multi-mission force with core skills in special warfare, direct action, and training foreign forces, operating similarly to the U.S. Army Ranger Regiment.

Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit (CJIRU): Provides a rapid response to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats.

427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron (427 SOAS): Provides dedicated aviation support (e.g., precision lift, insertion/extraction) to special operations missions.

Canadian Special Operations Training Centre (CSOTC): Responsible for developing and conducting common training for all CANSOFCOM personnel.

Canadian special forces have been deployed in numerous global hotspots since their modern inception, including operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Mali.

Synopsis

The novel begins with the disappearance of a Canadian veteran and a British intelligence officer in Belize. In response, JTF2 is mobilized, and the untested Sergeant Sebastien "Rocky" Ray is forced to step up and lead the elite Alpha Team on a rescue mission.

The team's initial objective is clear: rescue the hostages and neutralize their captor. However, the enemy they encounter is not an isolated extremist but an agent of a larger, shadowy cabal. This adversary is an "architect of upheaval" with a design to reshape entire societies and dismantle the Western world through a combination of traditional warfare, terrorism, cyber warfare, and political subversion.

What starts as a seemingly straightforward hostage recovery operation quickly escalates into something much larger: the first shots of a "Quiet War" that the world, and Canada in particular, is largely unaware of. As Rocky and his team navigate this new, unseen conflict, their loyalties and duties are tested. The narrative explores themes of military authenticity, intelligence tradecraft, and the complex geopolitical chess game unfolding in the shadows.

Ultimately, Rocky must decide whether to cling to the past or embrace a new, critical role that could determine the fate of his nation and its allies against a sophisticated, global conspiracy.

On my self-determined five-star rating standard, this exciting debut is one of those few books that I feel would be worthy of the five-star rating, and would soon become a favourite of aficionados of military thrillers who enjoy authors such as Tom Clancy and Jack Carr.

As with all my literary ramblings, this is just my five cents' worth.

Tom Clancy has been gone for a long time now, and even the authors who continue his work under his name haven’t been able to reach his level. I’m constantly on the lookout for books that really hit the right mental spot with big military, espionage, and political fiction. Very few in this genre are actually worth our time.

I ended up getting targeted by Facebook ads (which worked!) for this new Canadian author. Since this is his first book, expectations were fairly modest. After a minimal $5 investment, I started turning the first pages.

For the first time (to my knowledge), the story follows Canadian special forces soldiers, including JTF2 and CSOR. Lalonde was an intelligence officer, and he clearly knows his subject, which makes the whole thing feel credible.

Overall, we’re introduced to a large-scale global conspiracy in which Canada would be the first domino to fall. A terrorist group is trying to destabilize the country, and a veteran on vacation in Belize uncovers the plot. He attempts to warn the Canadian government, only to hit a wall of bureaucracy. What follows is a chain of events that culminates in a high-action sequence reminiscent of the good old Clancy days.

It’s not perfect. The dialogue is sometimes forced, and the story is a bit too short to fully develop its depth. That said, it’s genuinely entertaining, and it’s refreshing to read a story centered on our country and its military. The author doesn’t shy away from pointing out what doesn’t work in our system. For a first book, it’s an excellent start.

In short, for a light, entertaining read, this is very solid. The author is self-published, and that alone deserves encouragement.

This is my first book from this author. I found it to be well written and packed with both action and intrigue. Having a military background, the author was well versed in tactics and equipment used in military operations. Much of the story revolved around a search and rescue mission in Belize. The action was compelling and I never tired of the story.
It was interesting to read a military novel from the viewpoint of Canadian forces. The differences between Canada and the USA when it comes to military operations are subtle but not enough to seem alien. This is a good beginning to what looks to be a great series.

I’m checking in “safe but blown away” after reading Michael J. LaLonde’s debut thriller, The Quiet War: Canadian Front. Rarely has a first-time author displayed such instant mastery of three elements: fresh, original geopolitical concepts; intense yet highly realistic battle scenes; and engaging character development.

In Canadian Front, two main characters, Retired Warrant Officer Nathan Cutler and, separately, Alpha Team Leader Sebastien “Rocky” Ray, head a sprawling international cast of soldiers, intelligence officers, and Middle Eastern terrorists as the two men fight to puzzle out, then resist, Al-Najm Al-Saghir’s diabolical plans for collapsing the entire West. Have we seen the West fight Middle East terrorists before? Yes, but not like this. The “Quiet War” aspect of the book adds a sinister undertone more absorbing than a simple force versus force conflict.

Though the context is political, several major battle sequences highlight the story. I got an adrenaline high reading LaLonde’s authentic, plausible, yet exciting battle scenes, styled to feel visceral and vivid. Jungle combat in the final third of the book exceeds some of the best writers in the business. You hear the tree frogs, smell the swampy mud, and your ears ring from the zip, pop, and smack of sniper fire, automatic weapons chatter, and enclosed CQB. No cheap “plot armor” prevents characters we care about from getting hurt.

Michael J. LaLonde’s new thriller intrigued me from the jump simply because it puts Canada front and center. A passion bleeds through the text: LaLonde writes about Canada like a loving yet disappointed parent who knows their teen must make better decisions. In this political thriller, the stakes truly matter to the author, so they matter to the reader. I live in the US three hours’ drive from the Canadian border and realized, I have been a typical “ugly American” in displaying little curiosity about my neighbor to the north. LaLonde makes readers really look at a nation often taken for granted on the international stage. The fresh perspective makes the story doubly absorbing. As an avid military thriller reader, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learned about the Canadian military, and how much it juiced the story for me.

I won’t summarize more because I don’t want to spoil the plot for future readers. As a fan of action thrillers, I am convinced Michael J. LaLonde’s The Quiet War: Canadian Front introduces a major new talent who is writing absolute catnip for fans of Tom Clancy, Mark Greaney, and Jason Kasper. If this is the level LaLonde begins at, I can’t wait to see how he grows. I’m eager to read the next installment due in 2026. Highly recommended.

A corrupt group of individuals has their sights set on destroying the west - with clear focus on America. Knowing that American's do best when given a common enemy to rally against, they instead choose to target Canada as a way to slowly break down their allies before destroying them outright. Key Canadian military officials are tossed into the fray when they stumble across a fraction of the plot, and try to sort out what is afoot within the shadowy underbelly in control.

*****

I haven't read a military thriller in awhile, and despite being Canadian, I'm used to the market being flooded with American military novels. This was refreshing, not only in the authors clear understanding of our country and how it functions, but in what stresses and triggers we have politically and within different factions of healthcare, as well as COVID's impact on it all.

As someone well outside of military comprehension, I really appreciated the detail the author went into, not only in explaining what goes into ops and training, but even how different weapons functioned and how they were used in various scenarios. For the first time in recent memory I could actually visualize how each scene played out without my brain just imaging chaos and nothing else. This was concise, logical and had the perfect amount of detail to really sink into the novel.

As this is a shorter read that expands into a bigger series, it is a bit lighter on character development. But there's a variety of points of view and we get a bit of insight into many characters, which leaves plenty of room for depth and exploration in future novels. If you're a fan of military thrillers, with espionage, corrupt government and political machinations - this one is for you!

Book#1

Drawing from his service in the Canadian Armed Force and years as a military intelligence officer, the author has penned a political thriller in a narrative that is gripping of operations, espionage and geopolitical tension. This debut novel places Canada at the centre of a global conflict along with its allies.

Sergeant Sebastien Ray leads JTF2’s (Joint Task Force) Alpha team on a rescue mission: free the hostages and eliminate their captors. The enemy is no ordinary zealot; he is the architect of upheaval intent to changing the entire world. The story begins with a rescue that spirals out of control…..

First, a note from the author:

“Most Canadians have never heard of them, but when a Canadian veteran and a British intelligence officer vanish in Belize, it’s JTF2 that answers the call.” This first installment recreates a version of the mission.

In “The Quiet War”, Canada may be the first target but is not the last. U.K. USA and beyond will be subjects of their own war…I simply can’t wait to see how far- reaching the tentacle of war can be.

With steady pacing and grounded heroes this thriller feels too real IMO and stands apart other geopolitical stories by showing what Canada can do when it is force to act. The narrative is active and passionate, a cinematic glimpse into the high-stake world of a quiet war: it may be drugs, trafficking, abductions even murders whatever the prime target is, hopefully someone higher up the chain of command will be there to take the right decisions.

This first installment challenges assumption about Canadian identity, strength and sovereignty…..so real in today’s world.

This is an excellent read that will have you flipping pages at the speed of light. Interesting and captivating to no end….I simply loved it.

Well-said and well-done.

My thanks to the Book Whisperer for this ARC which I received from Netgalley

I just finished reading this book a few minutes ago. I couldn’t put it down. I loved every page. I’ve been reading military thriller’s for a long time, and The Quiet War: Canadian Front easily stands out as one of the best in the genre.

I was blown away by the quality of writing. It’s rare that a debut author nails it on the first time out, but that’s exactly what Lalonde did.

I’m a retired Canadian soldier, and I can say with confidence that the author accurately captures the unique culture of the Canadian Armed Forces. The author’s own 23 career as an intelligence officer shows in his portrayal of accurate military and espionage tactics, even using Canadian terminology. I’ve never seen that before.

The premise of the plot is a geological conspiracy to take down the west that sets this novel up as an introductory instalment of what looks to be an epic wide ranging series.

What makes this book a unique standout in the genre, is the antagonist’s decision to target Canada first. The justification and rationale is quite plausible, creating both an entertaining read and a thought provoking piece.

There’s a couple of unique and interesting twists in the plot that kept me on my toes and flipping to the next page. The gallows humour, camaraderie, and inevitable clashes make the characters deep and interesting. Even the antagonists are super cool in their own way.

Reading about Canada’s JTF2 (The Canadian equivalent to the British SAS, and American Delta Force/DEVGRU/SEAL Team Six) conducting hostage rescue ops and teaming up with old British allies made for a satisfying read.

I can’t say enough about this book. I’ve never once written a review for a book, no matter how much I liked the book. I just couldn’t be bothered. But I made an exception this time. I really want to see this author succeed so I can read more.

I highly recommend this.

The Quiet War: Canadian Front by Michael J. Lalonde was an engaging and thrilling novel. While it felt slow at first, it really picks up the pace after all the characters are introduced. I haven't read a lot of espionage-military fiction but I thoroughly enjoyed this. It has a very "Jack Ryan" feel to it.

The premise itself has huge potential and I'm really looking forward to the next installment in the series. I love that the focus is on Canada and elite Canadian soldiers. I get so tired of Americans dominating the military/political fiction (and non-fiction) genre.

The behaviour of the characters felt a bit odd and forced in some sections. I thought that their reactions to events or conversations were a little hyperbolic and seemed like they didn't quite fit their personalities. I was also slightly annoyed by the female characters. As with most books, they were, of course, slim and gorgeous and sexy whereas the men had flaws and were more well-rounded characters. This is a personal pet peeve of mine. I get bored reading about impossibly beautiful slim women all the time. These were small issues though as the majority of the book is well written and believable.

I really enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the JTF2's movements and strategies. I felt like I was an actual observer of the elite unit—like I was in the jungle with them. To me, that is the sign of good writing. I really felt immersed in the action.

Overall an excellent debut novel from a Canadian author. I am eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.

The Quiet War by Michael J Lalonde is the beginning of the story of one man’s quest to take over the world, or destroy it. It is told from a Canadian point of view and is pretty much a military thriller with some espionage thrown in for fun. It is not the first time a cartel and a terrorist group have joined forces but this time Al-Najim al-Saghir was going to use the drugs to bring a country to its knees. We see hints of that at present, but his plan was much more diabolical. Enter Keira, a young MI6 operator who was hiding as a waitress in Belize. She approached Nathan, a middle aged Canadian ex-operative one night, pretending to hit on him, convincing him to meet up with a man he had recruited years earlier. That’s when it all started.

There’s a huge cast of characters as well as a slew of acronyms, all defined at the beginning for reference. From then on it is basically a military operation, along the lines of SEALS or Rangers. It is fast-paced and violent, although not that bloody as these operators are good and mostly take out their prey with one bullet to the head. The author says the story is to make people think and he accomplished that. Mistrust of government is rampant and for good reason. Frightening book.

I was invited to read The Quiet War by Book Whisperer. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #BookWhisperer #MichaelJLaLomde #TheQuietWar

A phenomenal debut from a promising new name!

Michael Lalonde's "The Quiet War: Canadian Front" absolutely knocked it out of the park with this new entry in the military thriller genre!

The plot of "Quiet War" centers around a realistic and timely terror plot to dismantle the infrastructure of Canada through shrewd psychological warfare and decisive terror attacks. In a refreshing turn of events we are dropped into the world of Canada's elite special forces and given an insider's look into its culture and warfighting prowess. Desire, grief, duty, and team dynamics are excellently rendered for any reader new to the topic.

Lalonde's expertise and career within this Canadian SF unit bleeds through with the intensity and realism he works into the team dynamics, CQB, and operational pacing that drags the reader by the collar and doesn't let go until the final page is completed.

If you're on the fence about this book, you have nothing to worry about! This novel is well worth your money and it's going to a promisign newcomer with plenty more ammunition up his sleeve.

The most disappointing aspect of this book is that it is the first instalment of a longer story. While it draws to a natural conclusion, and is therefore stand alone, the book clearly states that this is the start of an ongoing saga. The book also is very clear on who the good guys are an£ who are the baddies. There are few grey areas. The novel centres on the uncovering of a terrorist plot. The two people who do this, a British agent and a retired Canadian soldier are then kidnapped by the group involved in this plot. It is up to the elite Canadian joint task force 2 to effect their release from the hideaway in the rainforest in Belize. What follows is a realistic portrayal of that mission. The writing holds your attention and there is a gripping conclusion leaving you wanting to see the story complete. It’s a shame to have to wait.

A very good start to the series. An interesting and scary take on how to destabilise the governments of the west, starting with Canada. Plenty of action, with great characters. There's enough military jargon to make the story move along nicely and keep it real, without being bogged down by too much military technical info. The list of military acronyms at the start is very helpful! I enjoyed the story and look forward to more in the series.

This was an amazing, fresh new perspective for a military, espionage, and political thriller. I really enjoyed the Canadian point of view of the novel. The Canadian military comes alive. Similar to Americans, yet with a subtle uniqueness that stands out in the best possible way.

The higher level plot is full of geopolitical intrigue, and the action on the ground is outstanding. The elite warriors of Canada's JTF2 (Canada's equivalent to Delta Force and DEVGRU) are true pipe hitters.

Highly recommend for fans of military thrillers.

This debut novel is the first in a series written by a Canadian veteran who has lived through similar situations described in the novel. You can’t be more authentic than that. This segment deals with the first salvo in a conspiracy to hurt Canada. When a former intelligence officer and a British spy are taken after a fierce gunfight in Belize, Canada’s JTF2's Alpha Team is called in to free the hostages and capture the head terrorist.

This story with high-level suspense and brutal, fast-paced action, put’s Lalonde on par with Andrew and Wilson and Jack Mars.

I wont write any spoilers but as a Canadian I was very happy to read a book about Special Forces from a Canadian perspective. I loved the pace of this story.. It was fast, and full of action, but also had some touching moments as well as some humour. It was frightening to hear about serious threats Canada is facing today, but necessary. I cant wait for the next book.

I really enjoyed the writing style and felt I got to know each character very well. I was totally invested .

Read through NetGalley. Interesting. Americans tend to think that they are alone in fighting militant Islam and Narco terrorism. Evidently that is not the case. The scenario was quite vivid and violent, but brought the reality that those issues are universal. The characters were well presented and the descriptions of the battle, though not for everyone, were quite realistic.

This turned out to be a great read. Fast paced and insightful about the way the Canadian special forces work. Founded on solid reality of locations and organizations, this fictional book was a page turner. While I initially purchased the book at a discount, it introduced me to a new author who I will now be looking out for. Easy to follow, Single core plot and central characters.
