What It Should Be: A Strangers to Lovers, Hockey Romance

Rate this book
What happens when my niece’s new nanny turns out to be my dream girl, only for me to find out she’s married?

Dakota

I need financial freedom so I can finally leave my husband. But when my new employer’s twin brother makes it his mission to woo me, I quickly realize I’m in way over my head.

Carson Wilder was the one thing I didn’t see coming. When my world falls apart, and I suddenly find myself without a place to live, the golden retriever of a man insists I move in with him. Seeing Carson in passing is one thing. Living with him? It’s an all-consuming temptation.

It doesn’t take long for him to become my best friend—the person I choose to lean on and confide in. But I’m seven years older than him, and I refuse to be the reason his golden boy image becomes tainted, especially when my past threatens to take away everything he’s worked for.

Carson

All I’ve ever wanted to do was play in the NHL. Just when I get my chance to prove myself on the ice, fate body checks me with a plot twist.

I was captivated by Dakota Meyer’s eyes—the most ridiculous shade of emerald, by the way—the moment they first locked with mine. My life changed for the better in an instant, and suddenly, my sole purpose wasn’t just hockey.

I may be the rookie falling for the older woman living across the hall, but I couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks. Dakota has seen me on my darkest days and has still chosen me repeatedly.

I don’t blame her for keeping her walls up and her heart guarded after all she’s been through. But once I’ve set my mind to something, there’s no stopping me, and I’ve decided she’s it for me . . . now I just need to show her what love should be.

What It Should Be is a spicy romance featuring a golden boy hockey player and the woman who knocks him off his feet. Join Dakota and Carson on their journey through friendship, adventure, love, and healing.

Carson & Dakota are the definition of unconditional love, and Grayce Rian did such an incredible job unfolding their story! We get it ALLLLLL i'm talking meet cute, tension, and the ultimate “she’s single, it’s my time to take my shot” moment 😍

“𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒚 𝒃𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒚 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝑰’𝒎 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒐𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖. 𝑨𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒉𝒐𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒚 𝒈𝒂𝒎𝒆?”

Grayce blessed us with a boy-obsessed MMC who is patient, understanding, and knows she’s the one. But what makes this even better is how real both characters are, insecurities and all. Watching them confront their struggles, care for each other, and grow together? AGHHH, my heart is MELTING just thinking about it. 🥹❤️

The romance? PERFECTION. We got SPICE, raw emotion, and a whole shrine by me dedicated to Carson's mouth. 🫠🔥

I recommend this book to anyone who loves a strangers-to-lovers romance, a story told over time (yes, each chapter marks the month!), and a man who will stop at nothing to hold her in his arms. 🥰

I had the first book in this series on my radar when I was luck enough to get an ARC for this one! Now I can't WAIT to go back and read book 1. This was easy to read as a standalone and my understanding is that the timelines are parallel to the events that occur in book 1. I liked the twist on the nanny in this one. Normally it's the nanny and the dad, but in this case it was the nanny with the uncle- gasp! I liked the age gap between Dakota and Carson. Carson was just the freaking CUTEST! He was enthralled with Dakota from day one and was not afraid to say it. He showed her in every way possible however she would hear him that he was there for her. He helped her through a dark time and showed her what real love could be like. Dakota meanwhile was a woman on the run. She had a past that made her jumpy and mysterious. This book helped to show that if you are surrounded by the right people under the right circumstances, you will flourish and that is what happened with Dakota. I loved their tension and build up. I will say this was a slow burn in the true sense of the word. I don't think anything happened until 60% of the book BUT it did make sense with the story AND killed me at the same time haha.

Dakota is looking for a change of pace. Her husband doesn't know it yet but she is secretly working on getting a divorce and in order to do that she needs some money. Which is how she has found herself here applying for a nanny position. She is planning on working with McKenna but it is her brother Carson who she finds herself really drawn to. There is something about him that she can't stop thinking about. Now that Dakota has the job she is around him all the time. She loves the freedom and flexibility this job is giving her. So when things explode between her and her soon to be ex she turns to Carson. And he shows up for her like no one has before. He holds her hand. He tells her how strong she is. He helps her recognize what she is capable of. And that is how she now finds herself living with Carson while getting divorced. McKenna has reconnected with her daughter's dad so not only is Dakota living there but it is just the two of them. They do all the things "friends" do- watch movies, talk about everything and yet Dakota thinks that maybe more could happen between them. Maybe she should give in to this thing. When Carson offers a trip to Europe all expenses paid to help a dream of Dakota's come true she finds herself saying yes. She finds herself saying a lot of things like she's ready to see where this thing goes. She cares for Carson. She wants a future with him. She is HAPPY. But the past has a way of rearing it's ugly head when you least expect it. Dakota just hopes Carson will be patient with her as she works through it because now that she has him- she doesn't want to let him go.

Carson has a new outlook on life. That will happen when your twin sister has a baby and the dad is not in the picture. So Carson is doing all of his uncle duties to the fullest. But when his sister, McKenna, suggests getting a nanny he doesn't know what to think until he meets her. Dakota. The woman he finds himself having a reaction like he never has before. Even when he finds out that she is married he finds himself telling he will wait however long he needs to. As long as he is in her life in whatever capacity it's perfect. Now McKenna has reconnected with her ex Griffin and Carter feels himself thinking about his future. And it all circles back to Dakota. So when she calls him after the unthinkable has happened, he is there for her. He will go to war for her if it will help. The least he can do is offer her a place to stay while she works through what has happened. Which is how he finds himself with a new roommate that he wants more with. But first he wants to help her heal. Which is what he does. He gives her the freedom she needs and supports her however she needs him. When the perfect getaway comes up, he offers Dakota a trip to Europe. He wants to help her become successful in this new career she is looking into. He feels things have shifted between them but he wants to make sure she is all in. So when she says she is- he almost doesnt believe his ears. He is BEYOND ecstatic. His dream girl is now a reality. Though it seems they are moving fast, he has been pining for her for a year! So when her past comes back to bite them, he realizes he has to fight more than he thought he would to help her understand his intentions. Because she is his future period.

I don't think I have read a book where the MC is this enamored with the FMC throughout the WHOLE book- it was ADORABLE and PERFECTLY Carson. I liked how this transitioned from strangers to friends to almost best friends to move. The way that Carson helped Dakota work through her struggles was just chef's kiss. Also can we talk about that chess scene YALL?! IYKYK. I almost blew out my drink when Griffin asked about playing with that set haha. I liked the cast of supporting characters here and can't wait to go back and read McKenna and Griffin's- I know that one is going to be heavy but worth it. Also can't wait to see how Bennett folds for his attraction to Scarlett. And who is Jackson going to end up with? This is why I love series yall!! I definitely recommend picking this one up if you are looking for a spicy friends to move with a splash of sports and fun family banter.

Thank you to Luna Literary and Grayce for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

“I’m beginning to realize I just have a fetish for anything and everything to do with Carson Wilder.”

Dakota & Carson’s banter, their chemistry, all of it was so great. Grayce of course had to bring us to tears when we see Griff & Kenna’s wedding, but i mean it wouldn’t be Grayce Rian’s style if she didn’t give us a good tear jerker!!🥰 She also maybe tried to kill us with this slow burn…like actually! The slow burn was extremely well & literally had me gnawing at the bars of my enclosure bc I was FERAL for Carson & Dakota. I also love a well written strong ass fmc & that’s exactly what Dakota is. You know what’s even better than a strong ass fmc? A mmc who is so supportive & willing to do anything to help the fmc through her pain (even if it meant holding his feelings in for longer than he wanted to!). Carson was a well rounded mmc & just a great man. I’m so happy that we got to see him as vulnerable as we did because I just knew he was one to suffer in silence in order to be there for everyone else in his life. Last but not least, the freaking spice! When we get through that deliciously slow slow burn it is nothing but HEAT between these two. We all know Carsey baby was going to have a filthy mouth but wheeeeeewwwwieeee🥵

I really did enjoy this book. I was so dang excited about it because I loovveddd What It Was. One of the biggest reasons I rated it a little under 4 stars was because of the way the conflict/last act break up/conflict resolution occurred. You get through almost the entire book for the conflict to pop back up in one of the last chapters to be resolved in a single chapter too. That part just felt rushed & pushed to the last couple chapters. Other than that, I really wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who was a fan of What It Was!!! I will forever support & read Grayce Rian, not only because she is an incredible author (& slowly becoming one of my favs) she is also just the sweetest person.

What it should be had my heart melting. Not only is Carson, boyfriend's material, he is also a true swiftie. I did identify to Dakota and her master in English Literature as it is my own cursus. Both are just so cute and lovely. And Cadence brings just the sweetness we didn't knew we needed. The perfect romance EVER!

Grayce is one of my favorite debut authors from this year, and I was so excited for her second release!

This is the second book in the Off Ice Series, and in my opinion I feel like the books need to be read in order. There is a little bit of an overlap between book one and book two.

This book made me so giddy. I have said it once, I will say it a million times over, we STAN a man obsessed, and Carson is a man obsessed.

This book is the epitome of “if he wanted to, he would”. Carson falls for Dakota from the second he laid eyes on her, and even though she wasn’t available then, he patiently waits until is, and then he waits even more for her to heal from her past, and until she’s ready to open her heart to the possibility of more!

I loved the nicknames throughout this book, I loved the travel/vacation romance, I loved that Carson was the biggest Swiftie, I loved the Slow-burn friends to lovers trope, I loved Dakota’s journey to refind herself, I loved so much of this book!

What It Should Be (Book 2)
By: Grayce Rian

“Giving nicknames to those I’m close to is kind of my way of showing them I care. It’s a term of endearment. From the moment I met you, I had this insane feeling that you were meant to be in my life. I looked into your big emerald eyes, and it was like this moment of clarification.”

“Remember when you said you wouldn’t kiss me until I’m ready to be all in? I’m ready now. I’m yours if you’ll have me.”
“Mine,” I murmur, leaning in to finally claim her mouth.

“I love it when you’re bashful. And I love it when you include me in your future, Dream Girl. In case the nickname wasn’t obvious enough, you’re all I see when I think of my future. Marriage, children, pets, careers—I only see you by my side when I think of them.”

Dakota and Carson’s story is so sweet! When we meet Dakota she is interviewing to be a nanny for Carson’s sister. Her life is in limbo, she has an awful husband who controls every aspect of her life. As soon as Carson sees Dakota for the first time he is taken. But knows she is married and all they will ever be is friends. Fast forward and we find out how awful Dakota’s husband is, and Carson is right there to care for Dakota. Show her comfort, allow her to grow and blossom and when she’s ready show her love like she has never known.

Golden Boy with a Golden Heart = Carson Wilder

Perfect Vacation Vibes — What It Should Be is a dual timeline with What It Was but Grayce pairs both books perfectly with each other.

Carson has known Dakota was it was for him from the moment she walked through his front door but he also knew that Dakota was married and settled for a friendship instead.

But an unfortunate set of circumstances lead Dakota to divorcing her husband with Carsons support including becoming roommates when Dakota had no place to go.

Carson and Dakota built their relationship on all the small gestures, patience’s and kindness. They became each other’s safe place to land but where Carson brings the sweetness he also brings the spice!

The Chess scene will live Rent Free 🔥

Combine that with a side of golden retriever persuasiveness he gradually encourages Dakota out of her shell. The way Dakota bloomed whilst they toured Italy together had my heart feeling so full.

To top it off you get plenty of found family moments which will have you feeling like you’re sitting right at the table with them soaking up all the love that was so freely given

DEDICATION: to those who want a simp in the streets and a sinner in the sheets… I introduce to you: Carson Wilder. You’re welcome.

NEVER HAVE I EVER read a dedication that so perfectly describes an mmc. Carson is down baddd for Dakota and he makes sure she knows it. their flirting and banter throughout the book was so tender and wholesome and literally had me giggling and kicking my feet. I had to stay up until 1 am to finish this book and I went to sleep with the biggest grin on my face. 🥹

this book felt like the equivalent of your heart getting a warm hug. the way these two support each other and their dreams was so beautiful. I mean, this man requested a writing desk in their hotel suite in Italy so she could write her first book while she’s feeling inspired in another country. THE PERFECT MAN. 🫶🏼

What it should be is the second book of the off ice series by Grayce Rian and also my first ever read from Grayce. But let me tell you that I could not put this book down.
The way, Carson fell in love with Dakota, the moment he saw her for the first time. And the way they banter and flirt from the beginning is so wholesome.
Both main characters and a few of the side characters have been through traumatic experiences and events, and are still working through it.
Dakota and Carson help each other through their trauma.
Being a slow burn book, there is spice from beginning to end but initially is very light and it gets spicier as they become closer but definitely hotter than I thought it would be. Looking back, the perfect amount of spice for the story.
Will definitely read the first book from the series and other books that will release in the future.

Off Ice Series Book 2

Grayce Barbara Rian! You have done it again! I want to be mad at you hence the made up middle name but Holy moly, you have knocked it so far out of the park that its done a loop around the entire world.

Book one in this series hits you in the feels and hits hard, book two... man I should have learned to be ready with the tissues!
Grayce has certainly does not hold back when it comes to emotional content.

When Carson meets his nieces babysitter for the first time he is completely enamored by Dakota, and heartbroken that she has already been snapped up by someone else, not one to give anything away, so I won't say anything else, but it is the best kinda of emotional rollercoaster.

What It Should Be also brings the return of everyone's favourites Mckenna, Griff and Cadence, seeing their relationship beyond What It Was Was everything I didn't know I needed.

If you don't run to preorder this book it is a criminal offence, and I will personally do it for you :) I think you will love it as much as I did!

ARC review!

Damn if this book did not take me through an absolute whirlwind of emotions. I felt so strongly for both Dakota for what she was going through in the beginning, and Carson for sensing that something was seriously wrong and not knowing how to help.
Their growth individually and together was beautiful, and Carson finally seeking therapy warmed my heart. All of them, including Kenna and Griff, finding their ways to honor Griff's sister and heal from what happened made me proud for fictional characters I've never even met.
Their vacation was so whimsical, and inspiring, and some of those scenes with Carson and Dakota throughout had me blushing.
Overall, such a fun but heartfelt and feeling book. I'm loving this series!

4 stars! Ooooof. Carson Wilder. I never knew what the recipe for a perfect book boyfriend was until I met Carson. Between his nickname-giving, Taylor swift loving & doting on his sister and niece to no end, I couldn’t get enough! I read this book in one day, and I have no shame.

I love a good hockey romance, but I will say that this one did not have as much hockey as some I’ve read. I don’t think that’s a negative thing, but if you’re a die-hard hockey girly looking for some game time, you’ll witness quite a few interesting games but it ain’t gonna be hockey! IYKYK

This was my first Grace Rian book, and I’m definitely going back to read book 1 now - I need to read Griffin and McKenna’s story!!!

Thank you to Luna Literary Management and Grace Rian for the eARC of this book. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review after reading the book.

5⭐️ I was so ready for this one after reading What it Was! Carson is instantly infatuated by Dakota the instant he meets her at her interview to become a nanny for his sister. But Dakota is married so she’s very off limits. Dakota is determined to escape a horrible situation and marriage so the first step is getting a job. She’s determined to do it herself but when things take a turn for the worst Carson is there to help her pick I’m the pieces and rebuild her life. He becomes her go to person, her best friend, and the one she can confide in. She knows nothing can become of their attraction. He’s too young and she’s too broken but Carson doesn’t see it that way. He knows her walls are high but he’s determined to knock them down brick by brick. He has his sight set on making her his but will he be able to get past the impenetrable walls and show her that he’s never not going to be her safe place to land?

This series is quickly moving into a top of all time. CARSON. OMG. I cannot get over how good of a guy he is and everything he does to help Dakota heal and rebuild her life. He’s so patient with her and just a constant when her world feels upside down. The connection that these two form is incredible. I love that they build a strong friendship and that Carson never gives up despite all the reasons Dakota says it will never work. Dakota has high walls and it’s understandable. She been through the worst but she’s no longer alone in her fight. She people on her team now and Carson is at the top of the list of people who won’t let her face anything alone now. I can’t get over their trip and the stories surprise he has for her! Oh man was this a good one!!!

It’s probably the most boring book I’ve read all year.

The burn is so slow, their first romantic moment, aka first kiss, happens around 60% mark.

It wouldn’t be a problem in itself, if it was justified by some action-filled plot that keeps the reader focused on different storylines.

However, there are no other storylines. Literally nothing is happening. There’s no angst, no tension, just a regular day to day life with a very innocent flirting between two friends.

I think there’s one or two supposedly heavy moments, but it’s hard to imagine they would have a big impact, since it’s a couple pages in total, at best, some of which are the most cliché third act break up possible.

I don’t know if it’s a matter of writing, the lack of creativity or if it’s simply the fact that not all love stories are book-worthy.

Nevertheless, it was so sweet, plain and cozy that it put me to sleep, so I’m done with the series for good.

What It Should Be, book two in the Off Ice series is like a Taylor Swift song. You have all the feels, some drama , a lot of heartwarming moments, a hero with a golden heart and a dreamy girl who learned to dream again. And Carson Wilder definitely stole my heart. Because this guy is a book boyfriend personified. Carson is thoughtful, caring, with his heart on his sleeve , he appreciates all the little things about his loved ones. And now Dakota is one of these people , she's at the top of his list. She's his dream girl and he's ready to wait for her . But she's married so he's her friend. Dakota has a secret and she's working on a plan . She considers Mack and Carson friends but even they don't know about her family situation. Then everything is out of control and out in the open with a very serious consequences . But as a result Dakota is free. Now she's healing and getting her confidence back and Carson is with her every step of the way . But the golden boy has a cracks in his armor and Dakota is helping him in return. These two are a couple goals even before they became a couple. I loved it that they first were friends, then roommates and when Dakota was ready they became a couple. They had such an undeniable attraction , crazy chemistry and are steaming hot together. And they supported each others dreams and goals. So Carson is definitely a perfect book boyfriend. And that trip to Italy was a dreamy one . The suspense that Dakota's ex brought to the story gave it an edge. And just made those epilogues even more sweeter . Loved to see some more from Griffin and Kenna. And yes I did catch that Easter egg about Because of You. Now I can't wait for the next book in the series because those hints about Bennett and Scarlet were more than intriguing.

Thanks to the author and Luna Literary Management for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of this book.

✨Dakota takes a job as a nanny to gain financial freedom to escape her husband. What she doesn’t expect is to meet her employers handsome hockey pro twin brother Carson. When Carson sees Dakota for the first time, he deems her his “dream girl” and plans on showing her just how good life can be with him💕

✨Carson has to be one of the most caring, thoughtful mmc I’ve ever read! Everything he did was with Dakota in mind. How he spoiled her and also supported her dreams of becoming a published author (yes y’all Dakota is a book girlie!) I loved their banter and their overall relationship. Them being each others person, and the fact that Dakota was older than Carson (7 years) he didn’t let that stop him at all! I absolutely loved how they became friends first, but when they both knew they wanted more, Carson made sure to take his time. The man was straight swoon ok! He was making me wish so hard that I was in this book! 😩 This was such slow burn and once it got going, it was hot Y’all! Carson.. lord 🫠 he’s literally so sweet and cute one minute and then the mouth on him had my cheeks heating up🔥🫣 it had everything, strangers to lovers, banter, swoony moments, spice 🌶️, a dash of suspense 👀 I can’t wait to read the next one! I already know I’m going to fall head over heels in love with Bennett 😍

I’m so in love with you Grayce 🥺💗

Right from the start I was hooked and fell in love with Carson and Dakota! I love Grayce’s writing so much - her writing is so captivating and her characters make you fall in love with them. I laughed, cried, swooned, and smiled the whole time while reading, Carson and Dakota are the sweetest couple ever 🥺💗

From the first moment Carson sees Dakota, you can see that he is completely in love with her and all he wants is her. He does everything to keep her safe and loved - he pays attention to every little detail and uses it to make Dakota smile whenever he can. Also, the nickname he gave her was just the cutest ever when you know the reason behind it 🥹 There's just something about a Golden Retriever MMC that makes me fall in love with them, and Carson is the definition of a sweetheart 😭💗

Dakota is so incredibly strong, even when the world seems to be against her - I want to hug her and protect her from everything. I admire her so much and I love her for who she is - Dakota is such an inspiration 🥺💗 Dakota is such a sweetie and I am so happy that she has found Carson, Mack, Griff, and Cadence to give her the love and care that she truly deserves. I also love that she is a romance reader - I need her as my best friend!!

I just knew I was going to love Dakota and Carson traveling to Italy- It got me in the perfect summer mood and can we please talk about how Carson was the biggest swiftie ever? He's really the best book boyfriend ever 🥹💗

I'm so in love with you Grayce 🥹 This story was absolutely beautiful – I laughed, cried, and swooned because of Carson & Dakota - they are everything 😭💗

Thank you so much Grayce and lunaliterary.management for the ARC 🫶🏻💗

Carson Wilder could set my world ablaze, and I think I’d happily dance through the flames if it meant I got to be with him on the other side.

“I’m not kissing you tonight. Not like this, not until you’re ready. Because once I kiss you, Austin, I know I’ll never be able to let you go. There’s not a chance in hell once I’ve tasted your sweet lips that I’ll ever be able to go back to pretending I’m okay with being just your friend. It won’t be enough at that point.”

New book husband alert. I repeat…NEW BOOK HUSBAND ALERT!! Oh my good god. Carson Wilder is my new man. He is mine no one can claim him. Grayce does it again! I thought book 1 was amazing but oh my GOD this book!! This book!!! I was already crying only 15% in and I pretty much sobbed the entire time. This book was everything. I’m going to need you all to be good little book worms and go read this series. You will not regret it!! Grayce has such a way with her writing that makes you want to keep going. She makes you feel all their emotions. I have a feeling this is going to be my top read of the month! I already miss these characters so much!😭 I also will never be able to listen to this song without thinking of Mr. Wilder singing it to me🥹😍

I had very high expectations going into this book. Book #1, What It Was had me so full of emotions, laughing, crying, screaming, smiling, swooning. This book not only exceeded my expectations, but I am pretty sure it broke me even more than the first book!
Carson is still the super sweet older brother who is caring for his twin sister and niece until Kenna decides to hire a nanny who immediately turns Carson's world upside down with instant love for her. Dakota is in an abusive marriage, though, and is trying to get out. Griff comes back into the picture, and what happens with Kenna had my heart screaming happy tears. Dakota (Austen....or Kota) is fighting her feelings toward Carson because she feels she is too old and broken for him... but sweet Carson is willing to wait for her.
Spice, slow burn, fire attraction, off the chart chemistry. Insane banter!
The trips Austen and Golden Boy are on together were like time standing still to me while I read about it, I couldn't put the book down for a second! The reason behind the 3 squeezes is the cutest thing in the world, the reason behind her nickname, the adorable things he does for her, like creating the library, and I was so in awe! I highly recommend this series. I can't wait for the next book!

She did it again! I loved book one and I knew this was going to be good too! It passed my expectations! I loved Carson in book one and couldn’t wait for his story. Dakota and Carson pulled at heart! They needed each other and helped each other grow the story was beautiful. The plot, the chemistry and the spice…. he may be a gold retriever but he knows what he is doing because let me tell you chess has a new meaning to me! 😮‍💨 Carson shows you patience and love go hand in hand.

I loved that we got to see more of Kenna and Griffs relationship too🩶

Carson… Need I Say More?

Carson FREAKING Wilder. I don’t even have the words to describe this man.
A dream. Perfection. Everything. The true definition of “what it should be”!

I’m pretty sure throughout this entire book, I swooned the entire time over Carse. The way this man SHOWS up in every single way, tells you everything you need to know. There is never a moment where Dakota feels less than love by him. Watching their relationship unfold was super sweet.

When Dakota is first introduced in What It Was, Carson was completely head over heels for her just the second he laid eyes on her. Finding out Dakota was married, never stopped Carson from being there for her... especially when he felt something was off. He dug deep and made her feel as if he could protect her when she needed him, and boy does he do that. After her divorce, she finds herself spending more time with Carson, the more she cannot resist this pull any longer. While it seems their relationship might be moving quickly, it felt to me like a “when you know, you know” situations.

I really loved getting to witness Carson’s continued and growing relationship with McKenna, Griffin, and Cadence - because we know how much they all mean to him. It was just really sweet to continue to feel those same feelings throughout this book too.

If you’re looking for a swoon-worthy man, you NEED Carson Wilder in your life. There is no doubt about that one.

I received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review
let me tell you from the start of chapter 1 I was already hooked. I did enjoy the little content warning just in case but nothing was too much for me. I absolutely adored Carson and Dakota. I absolutely loved how much Carson just loved his whole family and how he would do anything for the people he loved. This will have me on the edge of my seat needing to know what was going to happen next with a certain somebody’s ex. After reading book one I was definitely excited to see how this book was going to go and it did not disappoint. I read this all in a span of 12 hours and if it wasn’t for the fact that I had things to do I would’ve read all of this in one sitting. I am so excited for book 3 especially with the book is about so goddamn excited.

While Book 1 made me an emotional wreck, Book 2 made me giggle. A LOT!
This book is has a dual timeline with What it Was but I appreciated that there wasn’t much hint about Carson’s story from that book.

Carson fell for his niece’s nanny from the very first moment. But his hopes were crushed when he found out Dakota is married. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop him from being a little flirty with her.

I loved how their story kept me on my toes. Knowing what Dakota was going through and how things were progressing between her and Carson, I couldn’t help but worry about when the next unfortunate thing was going to happen. I’m not gonna spoil what was this unfortunate event. You guys need to read it to find out.

Carson is definitely the hero I loved since book 1. This book only made me fall for him even more.

I loved this book! It is an interconnected standalone so you don't need to read the first book to understand what happens in this book. It was such a cute romance book with a slow burn and a nice touch of spice! I loved the storyline and how it flowed. The main characters Carson and Dakota are cute and I loved reading how their relationship formed and progressed. With all that said I do recommend reading the trigger warnings as it does discuss some issues that can be a little unsettling for some but it is written beautifully and respectfully. The nicknames that Dakota and Carson had for each other were so cute and the spice was spicing towards the end. I can't wait for the 3rd book! Thank you grayce rian and Luna literary for the opportunity to read and review this book

What do you do when the one you want is with someone else? Especially when you believe they’re the one based on first meeting.

Carson and Dakota go through so much together and separately. Their growth throughout the novel was beautiful to see. Watching them heal from their pasts in order to come together and show the other their true feelings.

Carson our MMC is a lover boy. This boy is driven, hard working and goes after what he wants. But he’s patient, and understanding and made sure to be respectful throughout. This boy wears his heart on his sleeve and gives a bit of himself to everyone he loves. When he meets Dakota and learns that she’s married he backs off to make sure she still feels comfortable with him. After some things breakdown Carson makes sure that Dakota knows that he is someone she can trust and lean on. Watching him love not only out loud but in the quiet moments was so special.

Dakota our FMC is guarded and for good reason. She is independent, hardworking, and learning to love herself and trust those around her. Dakota goes through so much in this book and watching her grow was amazing. Dakota learning to trust Carson and fall for him was beautiful. Watching her go after her dreams and be supported by those around her is everything she deserves. having Carson there to cheer her own and help her trust herself was something that is so important to this story.

Carson and Dakotas love story was one of patients, perseverance, and overcoming past hurts to get to get to where you deserve to be. These two together were flawless. They balance each other and bring out the best in each other. They are each other’s biggest support and it was amazing to see the relationship develop.

What It Should Be isn’t loud. I feel like it’s not dramatic or twist-filled or written to shock. But it knows something about grief, about growing, about the quiet ache of trying to find your way back to yourself - or maybe into someone new. And that’s what made it feel so real, so intimate. Almost like reading someone’s diary... or my own, if I’d ever had the courage to write it.

Grayce's writing is soft, poetic, almost simple - and then a line will knock the air out of you. I had to stop more than once just to feel something, to reread a sentence that hit too close to home. There’s something so raw and human here: in the fear of loving again, in the shame of not being okay, in the messiness of healing.

The story is not made to be perfect - and maybe that’s exactly what makes it so honest. Life isn’t clean, healing isn’t linear, and she doesn't pretend it is. Instead, this book just sits with you. It stays.

If you're looking for something quiet but emotionally resonant, something that doesn't ask for attention but earns it anyway - read this. And let it hurt. Let it heal. Because this is an experience to read!

Ohhhhh Carson. You are a very patient and loving man. I loved seeing your story grow. And the way Grayce wrote Dakota and her previous relationship was amazing. Again tears were down my face and I was so invested I couldn't put it down but I made a promise to myself I wouldn't devour it... I left the last 6 chapters for days because I didn't want it to end. I really loved seeing more of the back story with Mack and Griffen and how Carson saw it through his eyes. 100% read this book. Cannot wait for the next book. Bennet seems like a hoot!
